  1. I'm almost 5 wks post op and still struggle with hydration and Protein. Now that I can have soft foods it is easier, but I still don't hit my goal. Isopure, Premier, Unjury powder even broth, made and still do make me nauseous to even think about them. Carnation Instant is tolerable in chocolate, but barely. I did buy some GENEPRO and it works to an extent, but don't believe the hype that there is no taste, BS! I can mix one scoop (30gms of protein) with 1.5oz of cream of wheat or oatmeal and it is doable. I found my Holy Grail about week 2 when my husband brought home a cup of Sonic ice, I chewed on that all day and it was so easy. My freezer has a bag of Sonic ice at all times and all of my drinks have to be ice cold, the least bit warm and I get nauseous. I have frozen Crystal Light drinks as well but they burn the back of my throat so I have stopped those as well. Week two I was where you are, but I wasn't crying, I was furious and cussing like a lunatic. No one tells you that hydration is the most important, all of my manuals say "at least 50gms of protein and at least 48oz of clear liquid", no options just scare tactics. It is physically impossible for you to get all of that in when your tiny new stomach is so swollen. I understand the importance of protein and hydration, but they need to give you some more realistic guidelines for the first few weeks. It seems some people do it and are able to get all of that in, but in my case, I could not and still struggle.

    Medicaid?

I heard if you have Medicaid and you fit under a certain criteria, you can be approved rather quickly. I have a doctor appointment this Monday and I'm going to suggest WLS because after being this overweight for this long I'm fed up and ready for a positive change forever. I have friends that joke and say if I have Medicaid then I'll get approve for surgery the following day but I'm not sure if there's some truth to that. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Packing for Surgery...

My husband was with me prior to surgery, waited during surgery, and came to see me when they put me in a room. I was still pretty out of it, so I told him to go home. We have 2 dogs and they had been home all day inside and they needed to be fed. It was already 6-6:30 pm by the time I got in a room. I was in the hospital for 3 days (2 nights) and I told my husband to go to work the next 2 days and stop on the 3rd day and pick me up after he was done with work (he works right around the corner from where I was in the hospital). It worked out great. Packing for the hospital, just take clean underclothes and don't worry about another outfit. Wear the one you came to the hospital in to go home. I was provided with a toothbrush and toothpaste, mouthwash, body wash, and body lotion by the hospital. I wore the hospital gown (well it was changed each day) the whole time there. They actually told me it is preferred because easier to check wounds and take vitals and such. I had a shawl/shoulder blanket, I brought a toothbrush and toothpaste just in case, and also had to bring some diabetes supplies. I also had my cell phone, charger, Nook, and a pair of slippers. That was pretty much it. You will be busy recovering, walking the halls, and laying in bed! If you like to listen to music, I would suggest earphones for your cell or ipod. Good Luck!!! You're closing in now!

    Day 7

For some reason today is a downer for me. Maybe it is the weather. My surgery was last Wednesday. I started at 294 and as of today I am 272. I didn't feel like eating until day 4 and even then I ate very little. I miss food but I am thankful that I've had no complications. I belong to MOMS Club and they have fed my family every other night since my surgery which has been a relief. My first attempt at puréed foods left my bloated and a nasty taste in my mouth so now I don't want to try again. A positive note the night pain in my feet is gone, my blood sugar is down and the weight is coming off. Sent from my SM-N900V using the BariatricPal App

    Saving Money?

It is almost embarrassing how cheap dates have gotten. My girlfriend doesn't eat much, and I sure don't. We have gotten into the habit of splitting a plate. I don't drink when I eat, and she just has Water sans ice. Think about it...if I go out by myself, I take home my left overs and get 2 additional meals out of it. So if I spend $30 on average for dinner...Before surgery, three days = $90. But post surgery, 3 days is $30, saving me $120 a week, or $6240 a year. I think this should pay off my surgery in a year in food savings. 3/4's of my kids are out of the house, so I now go to Whole Foods, get really great meat, but a pound of grass fed beef lasts nearly all week, not one meal. So that is a major savings, tastes better and better for me.
  6. Stay away from strawberries raspberries or blackberry though bc they have too many seeds and you are NOT allowed to have seeds in soft phase. 1/2 a banana mixed in would give you a great potassium boost but no more than 1/2 per day with your protein bc they have a lot of carbs.

    Saving Money?

I live alone so yeah I saved a ton of food money in the first 6 months. After I was cleared to eat steak, I eat a lot of steak. I only eat grass fed meat, so that isn't cheap although you can find deals. I think a lot of people underestimate how much money they spend on food pre-op. If you add up all the coffee runs, Snacks, and large fast food meals, not just groceries, it is a ton. So even though I might spend a lot on clothes, I am still saving money. I spent a lot on clothes and a lot on food before. A ton on food, if I am being honest and counting groceries, starbucks, snacks out etc. My food bill even with all the "expensive" specialty or replacement things I use, is about 1/4 what it used to be. I also took "expensive" Vitamins before surgery and I used Protein shakes for Breakfast a lot, so those were already a part of my budget.

Will I like the new me?!

In my past experience, when I lost a lot of weight I became more confident and quit putting up with bs.

    Dizziness

Also, make sure you are taking your iron. I was checking by BP and BS with dizzy spells and they were always ok then I realized I had often been missing my iron supplement. It the beginning i was also not spacing my iron far enough away from my calcium so probably wasn't getting enough due to that either.
  12. My A1C at pre-op was a 6.5 and I have not taken any meds since 2 months prior to my surgery and have not had a high BS testing since then...I would have to say it assisted me into going into remission..but I think that is only because of the different food choices I have made. Pre-op was on atkins (carbs less than 20) and since surgery only meat and small portions of green veggies so I think that has more to do with it.
  13. I use a blend of monk fruit/stevia/erythretol 1:2:2. For my coffee- which I'm not having right now because of pre-op diet- I use 1T of the blend with 2t Cocoa powder, a double ristretto shot, 1 T coconut oil and 1 T grass fed butter. Blended to emulsify the fats, this version of bulletproof would hold me happily for 5-6 hours. Not sure how it will work post-op as I might not be able to tolerate the fat but it was the best 200 calories of my day. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  14. Hi! What do your fasting levels run? How many carbs do you take in daily? Do you eat sugar at all? My fasting BS is usually between 120 and 130, which is a little high for a normal person but fabulous for me. (My A1C earlier this month was only 5.6) My carbs are usually between 25 and 40g per day. I eat no sugar at all.

Are guys actually checking me out at the gym?

Gonna gave to call BS on that Babbs. I saw your picture recently; you're getting checked out all the time whether you know it or not.
  16. I had been type 2 for almost 20 years when I had my RNY surgery. I was taking Lantus at night, which was eliminated before surgery. I was also taking Janumet twice a day. I decreased those until I was only taking 1 every other day. At 3 months post-op, my doctor took me off of everything. I still monitor my BS but haven't had any problems. It really is kind of a miracle.

    Hair loss!

Right now all you can do is eat your Protein and take Biotin, although the latter of the two is debatable as to how well it works. As your body recovers from being terrified that you cut out your stomach and only fed it liquids and soft food for awhile, it will eventually divert resources back to your less important areas, like the skin and follicles in your scalp. In theory, losing hair as a result of stress or nutritional changes is your body trying to save you from death- it sends the important resources to your vital organs. I suppose its rationale is that you can be bald and alive, or you can have hair and be dead, and while it's kind of an extreme analogy, that's the "thought" process of the body when it goes through major trauma and nutritional change. That being said, now that you are done traumatizing your body it will eventually realize that you are not trying to kill it and it will slowly give you back your hair. The better you feed yourself and keep up with your nutrition, the more quickly your body will relax and think "ok cool, we aren't dying, let's have pretty hair again". My body did not decide to give me back my hair again for awhile, lol. I lost hair I think around 5 months, and it stayed thin for awhile, probably almost 18 months. Then it started growing back and at 2 years, half of it fell out again, although I'm pretty sure that was more just stress hair loss than anything to do with my sleeve. It has now been about 8 months since my last "omg I'm going bald" incident and I can feel that my hair is thickening. When I brush it there is a giant poof around my ears where the new hair has grown in and the older hair is still thinner. I've also paid a lot of attention to Vitamins the last few months because my thin hair bothered me. I'm not sure if biotin works or not but I've been taking a lot of it and it's not like it's hurting me, so maybe it's working. At any rate...your hair will slowly start to grow back and the best thing you can do is eat well, be kind to your hair, and maybe invest in a hat. Jk on that last one, lol.

    Meal prep! Who's with me?

@@Elode - how much can you eat of dense food? A cup? I am curious you are ahead of me by a few months surgery-wise and I know I can eat a full cup (sometimes) depending on the food. Can you give me an example? How are the "girls" looking size wise? I have REALLY thought about your recent "do" and I am thinking about it. Did BCBS Fed cover it?

    Waist trainers.....what's the scoop?

I wish I listened to my grandmother and always wore a real girdle. I would have never got so fat. Spanx are complete BS. They don't provide enough control at all. I can definitely say that wear shapewear helps a lot. My hourglass shape is really coming along and my fats in the back are flattening out. That kind of extreme waist training is bad for people, but there are a lot of benefits to wear firm control shapewear. I plan on having plastics eventually but until I am going to exhaust all options.

    Blue Cross Federal

I have FEP bc/bs standard option and the process went very smoothly. I did have to meet with someone for the supervised part. I can't remember for sure but I think it was 3 times. I had my surgery in 2013. Good luck on your journey! I think my unsuccessful attempts were proven through my PCP records.
  24. A lot of good advice and outlooks here worth listening to. I haven't had my surgery yet, I'm about a month and a half out, but I've been working now to change many of my habits that have gotten me to where I am today. Like the OP, I was addicted to diet soda like crazy. Now, I haven't had diet soda in two months and have no desire to go back to it. Diet soda is just as bad for you as the fully loaded stuff. Aspartame is basically poison, so obese or not, people should steer clear. Remember, when food companies take the sugar out to make it diet, they put something else in that's created in a lab and market it as healthy. The same goes for light and fat free foods - they take the fat out and they dump sugar in and market it as healthy. My NUT has told me many times feel free to eat full fat things. Simple rule of thumb, eat real food. A great documentary on food in our society is Fed Up (it's on Netflix). I've come to complete grips that I must change my relationship with food and what sold me on that was being told by my surgeon that people with BMI's over 40 can expect to lose 10 years off their life. That was it...game changer! I'm only 41 and I'd like to see my grandkids get married, so I'm willing to give up the crap processed high sugar foods. I also love beer, but now? Bye bye. If I'm going to have 85 percent of my stomach removed I'm going to make it worth it. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Greetings from Australia... freaking out!

BC, I am too early out (3 weeks post op) to know what will work for me yet. I will trial and error when I am allowed to eat 'food' again. I am not meeting protein at the moment but getting 2/3 in.
