Collagen for added protein
Arabesque replied to Jmfpeterson's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Collagen isn’t considered a complete protein as it doesn’t contain all the necessary amino acids. Check with your dietician to be sure. They may consider it a bonus protein but not part of your goal. (I do this with my fluids - what I drink when I take my meds, the broth in chunky soups, etc. aren’t counted to my goal just bonus.) Better to add unflavoured protein powder to soups, milk, shakes, yoghurt, etc. if you want to increase your protein intake. -
Ive had this happen twice in life— after having a baby and second time after loosing a lot of weight on low carb diets— the hair does grow back and it doesnt last forever- take extra good care of your hair in the meantime, and maybe try a thickening shampoo. Other than that, up your protein and take biotin.

Collagen for added protein
Sigh replied to Jmfpeterson's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctors advised against counting as part of protein count. -
Has anyone added collagen to their clear liquid diet (add to broth) post op and had success with the added protein?
-
Ooo good to know. I wrote those down and I'll go check them out at the store next time I go. I've always thought I was weird my body had been give me more. My doctors have been persistent though just because tou can do a yogurt cup doesn't mean you should stick to 2 tbsp. I try to but dang it's Hard sometimes. So I think I might try slow and steady and increase protein intakes and if I'm not having a problem I should be ok. 3 days away from pureed phase. Woot.

It's one of my favorite soups there. I lived off it for lunches in the winter months. High in protein and super tasty!
-
I had actually never had it but tried it today and it’s quite tasty and only 200 calories for the cup with 16 grams of protein. I got the kids meal so I could get yogurt with it instead of the usual options.

Definitely increasing the water, we need 64oz at the bare minimum. Also make sure to hit your protein goal.

November 2022 surgery support!
NP_WIP replied to feisty one's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hope everyone is doing well! I finished my 1 month training program, start a 2 month one on Monday. My weight loss has been slow, I was going to say non existent but then realized I still lost almost 10 lbs this month. I knew starting weights was going to change the way I weight myself since muscle uses water to heal, but there were some weeks were I was loosing a pound. Once I upped the water, which I hit now 78-84 oz easily and my protein is on point, I started to loose again. But can't complain, really haven't had any stalls and if this can count as one, I'm grateful for it. Exercise made me hungry, like crazy hungry. There was a day where I was snacking on cookies, quest chips etc and realized I needed to stop before it became an issue, so I'm doing 3 meals and a protein shake split into 2 snacks. I'm also thinking of doing a few days of shakes only, if I see my weight not moving much this month. I want to be in onederland by 6 months. -

I use Oikos tripe zero yogurt they have 15g per small container, they also have Oikos Pro (more sugar) with 20g and Ratio yogurts have 25g of protein. If you like chocolate milk, Fairlife Core Elite protein shake taste like it (or what I recall choco milk tasted when I was little, do not care for chocolate much as an adult) and its 42g of protein. I use those if I'm low on protein but use a 14oz bottle in 3 servings since I stay at 60g now that I'm 4 months. I did not have any back pain but I still have discomfort and numbness on the left side where the stomach went out, is not by the incision but near the belly button. The RN said it was normal since nerves are cut and can be 6+ months for it to heal. Regarding fullness cues, at the beg is hard because your stomach is healing and even just eating something new or a new texture will have some sort of reaction which we confuse with fullness or damage. I will usually get hiccups at the beg and sometimes I do now too, but its usually more about me not chewing properly or eating too fast. My guidelines say to eat slow and take 30 min, so I will eat, take a break and continue if I want more within the timeline, otherwise save it for later.

I use the Protein Smart shakes as creamer in my coffee. Three cups of coffee and the shake is down without any bad taste.

Feeling frustrated and demoralized
Arabesque replied to Yahoo's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I agree with what everyone has said. You are doing so well in regards to meeting protein & fluid goals. Many of us take weeks to actually reach them regularly. I wonder if you are doing a little too much physically this soon after surgery? It’s a pretty major surgery & while walking is great 30mins is a lot in one hit. It may be stressing & pushing your body too much while it’s trying to heal & recover. Try spreading the 30mins out over the day: 2x 15 or 3x 10. Everyone is different of course. Personally if I walked for 30 minutes the first two weeks (or longer) I wouldn’t have been able to move for the rest of the day. All the best. -
Nutrition Goals - Unrealistic with food?
Arabesque replied to Victoria_Faith's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Check with your dietician about counting collagen as protein @Fitnewme327. It’s not a complete protein (doesn’t include all the necessary amino acids) & many say you can’t count it. Try siping through the night to help get your fluids in @Celesteb192. I always keep a bottle or large glass beside my bed. Sip when I get into bed, sip after every couple of pages I read, sip before & after every time I get up to pee - which is often 😁, etc. (I can do more than sip now of course but really it’s just a single ordinary swallow.) I get in about another 300mls - 10ozs. And yes it does get easier to the point it’s more just habit. -
Mulit-Vitamins throuh Amazon
Arabesque replied to Recidivist's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I wondered if sending them first to a US friend or family member first might be an option for you too. I don’t need to take vitamins anymore except for Vitamin D in winter. (Bonus of having a sleeve. 😉) My dietician recommended BioCeuticals. The ones I took were capsules but they do some as tablets, liquids & sprays (the D I use is a spray). Don’t know if they have any as a chew though. You can buy them direct or from certain pharmacies (they keep them behind the counter with all the better drugs). https://www.bioceuticals.com.au/ -
Less than a week before gastric bypass surgery. I'm nervous but excited. Been lurking here for a while, reading. I'm about ready as I'm going to get. Down 20 pounds in 3 months. A ton of pre op testing done and cleared. Food/drinks, chewable vitamins, protein, meds bought. On 2-week preop diet now which includes 2 protein shakes a day along with 3 ounces lean protein and 2 1/2 C. non starchy veggies and is totally do able for me. Clear liquid day before surgery. A full sugar Gatorade night before and again 2 hrs before arriving at the hospital. Interesting how different everyone's diets are depending on your doctor.
I'm optimistic all will go well. Good luck to the April surgeries happening this month and to all that are going through the process. {{hugs}}

Nutrition Goals - Unrealistic with food?
Fitnewme327 replied to Victoria_Faith's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm going on 5months and i still use my portion shakes. most days i only use one but often I find myself having two shakes to hit protein goal. pick shakes with as high of a protean amount as possible. i look for shakes with 390 grams or more. you can also add collagen peptides to your yogurts which will help with protein as well. yogurt is a big go to for me for snacks, its hard juggling between solids and liquids. while trying to hit protein goals. My nutritionist told me to focus on protein and liquids intake goals that everyone body is different so we wont all hit the same stages collectively. -
I'm getting so frustrated, 7 months out and almost 2 months stalled
Fitnewme327 replied to SuziDavis's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Have you tried going back to the pre surgery diet or the post surgery days 1-14 after surgery. it may help get you back on track. I'm only 4 going on 5 months and have stalled and what worked for me is to returning to high protein liquids for a 2 weeks. its kind of a rest for my body and then i can start trying to east solids again and get back to regulars healthy eating. -
February 2023 surgery dates!
Bandedbut replied to Erin18's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 1 day behind you, 5 weeks post op today! I start soft foods today, after 4 weeks full liquid and 1 week puree. I'm looking forward to salmon tonight with some roasted veggies! My dietician said to get in a protein shake so I have 30 g to start, and while the rest of my protein should come from food, the focus should be on paying attention to my body's cues, eating slowly, chewing, and stopping when I am full, vs tracking and measuring. I was surprised, I've heard others say to always measure, but it made sense... at this stage. Stop when I am full, vs a measured amount that may be too much or not enough. Also getting into the pattern of scheduled meals vs the all day sipping. Puree'd foods I am able to eat quite a bit. I am not enjoying coffee like I used to (yes, I'm allowed coffee) but struggle without caffeine so I start my day with the Cafe Latte Premier Protein shake. I'm curious too as to what others find they no longer like. -
Nutrition Goals - Unrealistic with food?
Celesteb192 replied to Victoria_Faith's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m in the same situation. I’m 24 days post op in purée stage. I can’t seem to eat more than 1.5 to 2 oz with snacks and meals, most of it proteins. My calorie intake is 300 and my fluid intake is not what it was since now I have to stop drinking 30 min before and 30’min after every meal. Whereas prior to “food” I was drinking all day. We will get it - it will get easier :) -

I can’t stomach Premier Protein shakes unless just a little mixed with coffee. Somebody recommended Owyn (plant based) and that’s been better. -
Any April Surgery Dates?
See.Allie.Run replied to rokse23's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
One week left for me. I’ve struggled a little with the pre-op diet the last couple of days, mostly because I can’t stomach (still) protein shakes so I’m mostly eating yogurt, one egg and bone broth. I did cheat yesterday (I was soooo hungry) and now feel really guilty. Ugh.
