August 25th Bandsters
sandiegokate replied to Twnkl2os's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded on 8/26 and the first couple of days I spent a lot of time in bed. Each day it has gotten better, the last couple of days exponentially. I was on Clear liquids for the first 4 days and then progressed to full liquids that included milk, Protein drinks, yogurt, oatmaeal with a lot of milk, and creamed Soups. I am anxious to move to the next phase. So anxious that I bought yams, rutabaga (I am one of the few that likes them!), turkey, and broccoli and cooked, pureed, and froze them so that I would be ready to move on to them probably by my post op visit next week. I know I will be very busy going back to work next week (home working this week) so I thought it best I prepare ahead. I might make a couple other things that will be ready to go also. Probably butternut squash (bake it with some olive oil...need some good fats), possibly lean ham steak or turkey ham ground (my friend did that for baby food and it turned out pretty good). We'll see.... So far all food and drink is going down well. Today I have been trying to make sure to "follow the rules" and not drink before eating or for 45 minutes after. By doing this I am able to notice the "full" feeling. I have been drinking a Protein shake (either a ready to drink or an unjury or muscle milk or ??) before each meal, to insure that I get the amount of protein that I need every day. I am not hungry until I am suppose to be, at a meal time, and I am satisfying it, and losing weight, so...So far so good!!! As of today I am down 22 lbs since starting pre-op diet on 8/15 and 8 lbs since the operation. I know this rate of loss won't continue but it is a nice start!!:smile2: -
Foods that aren't good after band.
Sharpie replied to Faded Design's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I still love good food.. hope that I never lose my interest in eating. I had pneumonia in Nov. and lost my sense of taste.. boy that was miserable.. loss of appetite completely is not healthy. I have changed my taste for crap food for sure. getting off of Sugar is the biggest change and I can tell if I do eat something sugary how my body reacts that it's not good for me. I eat better foods and healthier but I still love food. I cook more than I ever did before the band. My husband loves it but he needs to gain weight so It's good . I have always loved ice cream and still do but I know it's not good for me. I eat frozen yogurt yasso or skinny cow but in limited amounts. I doubt I could eat a hamburger and fries. I do love chic filet chicken tortilla Soup and Wendy's chili those are the only fast food items I will eat. but we are all different that is what makes the world go around. Eating less and healthy is the key to being successful with the band.. -
I also had surgery on 3/16. And I had the same kind of day yesterday that you are having! I wasn't losing anything on the scale and my family was eating awesome food around me. I was regretting my surgery decision. I just wanted to put the food in my mouth for the taste then spit it out. I talked myself out if it. It WILL get better I promise. I keep repeating what my doctors motto is... "I'm not saying it's going to be easy, I'm saying it's going to be WORTH IT". I repeat that to myself 100x a day and it gets me through. I feel like crap less and less everyday and we are inching closer to the stage where we can get away from the clear liquids and add yogurt, thick protein shakes and creamed soups. Yay!!!! I am with you on this ( we are surgery twins). I can't tell you how to feel your feelings are yours but I can tell you that you have support to get you to your goal. I don't know what I would have done without this app. It has gotten me thru so many hurtles. Hang in there!

Pills and Supplements

I need to lose 28 pounds before surgery. I am aiming towards the last week in July or the first week in August. I am in full blown menopause and my appetite is scary. Its an actual appetite-not head hunger-like growling in my stomach kind of appetite. Ah-hormones. My band doc gave me a scrip for phentermine, its for 15 mg. I can take it 2x a day or once a day. The scrip is for 60 pills. It is saving my sanity. And it putting a rocket up my butt by jumpstarting the weight loss by allowing me control over my appetite. I think of it like the band- a tool which helps me to the right thing. I am finally eating right and good. Keeping to 1,000-1,200 calories a day. The doc will need to check my blood pressure every 2 weeks. BTW the only problems I have besides being fat is apnea & high cholesteral which is controlled big time by 40 mg of Lipitor- I don't have diabetes or high blood pressure. I took 2 for the first 4 days, one after breakfast and one around 3:30. I always eat before taking one-something solid like a sandwhich or a lean cuisine. Never on a slim fast or something like grapes or yogurt. I don't get any jitters if I take it with a solid foundation in my stomach. After the first 4 days I am now taking only 1 late morning. My stomach has went down and I don't need 2 to keep control. I have used it before and lost 30 pounds but of course put it back on after I went off them. Which is why I am being banded. As a baby boomer and child of the sixties- I have taken real street speed , nothing like a baggie full of black beauties in your freezer to let you eat nothing but cheetos while loosing weight and cleaning the whole house in 15 minutes while rocking to Led Zepplin. I have yet to even vacuum since I've been on these! LOL I say if your doctor feels based on your history (and this is my lap band doc not my PCP) and you are being monitered and you practice some common sense and you don't have high blood pressure or heart problems then go for it. And you have got to eat. No flirting with fasting or forgetting to eat. Thats when you get the willies. You gotta eat. BTW I've also been on Meridia in the past and it did zip. And I don't recall the name of that other drug that blocks fat but gives you a very attractive side effect of oily bowel discharge (can you say romantic? hee hee hee) Anyway-To each his own but I am happy to have a some help. -
Bad habits are hard to break
scarlet333 replied to kitkat8787's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
You don't have to drink Protein shakes at this point. Especially since they are not filling to you. Instead get at least 60 gram of protein through chewing food this will fill you up. Dense protein like chicken, tuna, lean pork chops, lean cuts of beef, turkey, shrimp etc. This is one thing my surgeon recommends is that once you get past soft foods, most of your nutrition should be from foods you chew not drink or even soft foods. This will make you feel fuller longer. I was eating alot of greek yogurt, cottage cheese, Protein drinks and that is what he recommended to me. Also remember the rule about not drinking 45 minutes before or after your food this will help with restriction. Lastly, if you don't already start tracking all you eat in my fitness pal. Best of luck. -
That’s sort of what I have been doing. A premier protein when I wake up, then my three meals have been either a yogurt, apple sauce, or soup. And then another protein shake at night. But I’m at 68oz water not including protein shakes... some people count that into it. I have been setting timers for drinking and eating. I am wondering if this is a cautionary thing my doctor suggests just to start? 1-2 oz every 10-15 minutes. Water or protein shake or food. I’m at 2 oz water/ protein shake per ten minutes and it goes down fine. [emoji1303]

that is all I ate, is cottage cheese and yogurt, they make me gag. Think about it, since October I have been eating Soup, cottage cheese, rigotta cheese. After 6 weeks they want you to introduce food. My surgeon is away this week, I am sure he will contact me next week. Can not eat scrambled egg, make me throw up. I was able to eat the puree stage just regular food makes me sick

I've been stuck a couple times, mostly about a month after surgery. About day four after my third or fourth fill, I got a piece of chicken stuck, I was talking and forgot to chew well. I PB'd once, I had a blackberry stuck and after a few minutes and a tast of pineapple juice, up it came. Yogurt I have to eat slowly or else it back up a little and I gurgle. Lately, I've had no problem getting almost anything down! I defintely need a fill!

I am not a surgeon but that seems like a lot to me. I have a 32F and at 5 weeks I can hold 2 - 3 oz. 2 oz for me is the rule but some real soft foods I can hold 3 oz (like pudding or yogurt). Maybe you should talk to him about a smaller size? Ask what size he is using and why. It is your body, you have a right to ask. I seem to remember that it is difficult to revise again once you have been sleeved because the staples can't be found after healing has taken place. Seriously, this might be your only chance. Be cautious even if it means a delay in surgery. Just my humble opinion.

Hi Lizzy, I am doing great! I saw Dr. Bhoyrul yesterday. I was down 14 pounds since my surgery date and he was very pleased with my progress. I am down a total of 31 pounds from my high weight. I feel great. I have a ton of energy. Dr. Bhoyrul advanced me from full liquids to soft foods yesterday, so I had a 1/4 cup of mashed potatoes. they were the best tasting thing I've eaten in WEEKS! However, I did get nauseated afterwards, so I'm not eating them again for like a week. I did try one of those yogurt whips this morning for Breakfast and it went down easy with no nausea. I'm just so glad I don't have 2 more weeks of liquids only like I thought!!!! I'm sending you a PM. -

I ate pretty regularly. I was just really label conscious. It will work for you, and everyone's body is different. Also, my sleeve is shorter than most patients since they had to remove more tissue during my leak repair. Your sleeve may be a bit bigger than mine, or your body may be adjusting differently. Some days, I can take more food in, but I think a lot of my issues go back to having to eat so slowly, and chewing excessively. I still don't have hunger, and if we go out to eat, my husband and son, know that we'll be at the restaraunt for at least an hour. I have trained myself to eat super slow. It's a habit now. If I take my time, I can eat more at one sitting. I relied on greek yogurt and laughing cow cheese. When I got to soft solids, I ate deli meat with laughing cow. I did have a couple of weeks where mashed potatoes were my staple. But, I only ate about 2 oz of them. They were super filling. I would say that 90% of the time I stayed below 30 grams of a carbs a day. Some day, I would have a few more, but I never got over 50 carbs a day. It was just a rule I followed within my surgeon's and nutritionist post-op diet. Now, I'm getting in more carbs because I'm trying to maintain. -
Hi all! I am currently in the process of losing the 15 lbs my insurance plan requires before my surgery is scheduled. Since I am working to lose the weight anyway, I figured why not start making the lifestyle changes that I'll be making post-surgery? So I've been working on things like eating a more protein-forward diet, not drinking with or for 25 minutes after meals, etc. I thought maybe all of us in the same situation could share some things that are working for us here! I'll start! Meals aren't really such a problem for me personally, it's more the Snacks that I find to be a challenge. Here's a few high(er) Protein snacks that I enjoy: Lowfat or Fat-free cheese Stick Fat-free cottage cheese mixed with a few cut-up olives Fat-free plain Greek yogurt mixed with PB2 and Splenda (this has a TON of protein and tastes like Peanut Butter pie!) A couple of slices of uncured turkey lunch meat 2 Wasa crispbreads with lite laughing cow cheese, sliced tomatoes, and herbs (Ok, this one isn't so high-protein, but it's soooo yummy!) Hardboiled egg with mustard (I call it poor man's deviled eggs!) What is everyone else doing to adjust to our new life?

Apple and almonds? That's actually pretty tough on your stomach. I wasn't allowed apples or nuts until almost 3 months post-op. I had sleeve though, not bypass, and I know some of the guidelines are different. How do you do with Greek yogurt? Cottage cheese? Scrambled eggs? Were you throwing up in your puree stage or just once you moved onto solid foods?
-
I know that you all say to ask your nut, but I was given a very limited amount of info from mine. I even asked if there was anything else she could give me. I have found most of my info on this site and greatly appreciate it. I found for the puree stage that refried Beans watered down were my favorite. Also avocados and sweet potatoes with powdered Protein and plain greek yogurt mixed in. Haven't wanted to puree meats yet.

Hi, everyone! I've been lurking here for about 2 months, and I really appreciate everyone's posts. They have been so helpful now and also when I was trying to decide on the surgery. Well... I took the plunge. Eight days ago, I had gastric plication surgery with Dr. Corvala. Everything has been going really well. No problems to speak of until...today. Today was my first day on full liquids plus chewable vitamins and calcium. I had a couple of spoonfuls of yogurt, coffee w/ creamer, and creamy soup--all for the first time. And all day my stomach hasn't been overly happy with the change. Has anyone found that they got heartburn or stomach pain/discomfort when you went from clears to full liquid? Thanks for any thoughts! Alex

6 Weeks Out, Total Of 84 Lbs Down...
eazye replied to eazye's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Janette, I eat a lot of greek yogurt, favorite is apple cinnamon Chobani yogurt, lots of string cheese for Snacks, a handful of goldfish cracker in the evening for my evening shack after getting my daily Protein. I think you get just over 100 calories in those and there are something like 50-60 in a serving. I dont eat that many because being a cracker, they fill me up. I will sometimes have chili for lunch, maybe 4 oz of grilled turkey breast, or chicken, or even a plain hamburger patty with mustard or A1. With the hamburger, I do need to avoid the healthier lean ground beef becasue it sits in my stomach like a rock and isnt comfortable. I do eat a very small portion of a sweet item sometimes (ice cream, cookie, muffin, etc...) but they are limited and I never eat the whole thing. I find the diet very easy becasue I am not a person who requires a lot of diversity in my meals, I could eat the same thing every meal and be content. My general daily diet is Yogurt for Breakfast, 2x string cheese for morning snack, yogurt or a high protein food from my work cafeteria for lunch, a Protein Bar later in the afternoon, then some type of meat or a yogurt for dinner (depending on if I had a yogurt for lunch), then something small later in the evening if I feel like it. Gets my protein, keeps me full, and keeps me losing weight. I feel great so it must not be too bad of a diet....oh, plus my required Vitamins.... -
I'd LOVE to see the quinona/bean salad and the Greek Yogurt cheese recepies!!!

I got a fill on Wednesday that put me at 5cc in my 10cc band. Liquids trickled down for the first three days, then I was able to get some mushies down, I had to take really tiny bites. Today I was able to get soft meat down, a finely chopped salad and mashed potatoes. It still takes me about half an hour to consume a 6 ounce yogurt. I can feel the liqid trickle down in the early morning when I am tightest. I think I may be closer to restiction than I was before, but I do not want to count on being there and find I am not. -
Tips On Staying "satisfied" Longer..
daisychains7 replied to nipper75's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I talked to my doctor about this and she suggested 1 snack a day, something like string cheese or Greek yogurt. She also insists I have 2 or 3 glasses of milk a day. It seems to work. -
I am so lost and overwhelmed!
ParrotheadCathy replied to mom2cjpx4's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For now, it's a little tough. You still have swelling from the surgery which makes you tight, hard to take much in and it's maybe even harder still to continue to be satisfied by liquids since they don't stay in your pouch for long. I was on true liquids for 10 days and couldn't even have the soup or yogurt for 10 very long days. That first can of cream of mushroom soup was like getting a steak it tasted and felt so good, LOL. Just remind yourself that this is a very short term and it's just going to get better. -
Eating Food One Week After Surgery
Carpe Diem replied to Carpe Diem's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The only "food" I have had permission to eat are things that melt in your mouth like liquid, such as yogurt, jello. I also tried a Jamba Juice which I know isn't the best, but very filling! -
Just asking.. Dont Laugh!!!!!!!!
Tiffykins replied to Tamz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would count it as a mushy/puree/soft food stage. It sounds like a perogi or wonton of sorts with spinach, or like a mini little quiche. Would that be the correct assumption? Dip that bad boy in some Greek yogurt. Be careful with the dough as it may expand on you a bit if you're still early out, but it's be considered a mushy by the definition/directions you've given. -
What is everyone eating? I'm lucky to reach protein and not enough water intake. I've been try a 4oz Greek yogurt for breakfast, then soup or some 1/2 wrap and finally chicken for dinner. I'm not hungry or thirsty.... Looking for help.
-
Here's my doctor's recommendations for "soft food" stage: low fat yogurt, sugar free pudding, lean deli sliced lunch meats, canned tuna or chicken, soft non-fried fish, low fat turkey chili, meatloaf, ravioli, swedish meatballs, scrambled eggs, omelettes, cottage cheese, fat free refried beans with a slice of low-fat cheese (yum - this was my favorite!!). Lots of stuff to choose from!
