    Hurry Up and Wait!

THIS! if you don't like the doctor, find another. call your insurance and see what your options are. Some will let you go out of state (helpful if like me you border a city that is close to a state line) and some only require you go to a center of excellence and they should be able to email you a list! Just call and ask for a list of approved surgeons within 250 miles of you
  2. I have been feeling fine, just one spot on the right side of my tummy is sore if I lay on it for too long. I have been REALLY struggling with trying to meet my liquid and protein goals though. I am a very picky eater. I tried about a month or so before surgery to find protein drinks that I could stand (I HATE milk!!!). I found a few but now I really don't like them either. I've started my puree part of my diet and found out that I still do not like eggs, cream of wheat, or tofu. I've been trying to disguise my protein powder in my applesauce and yogurt. Did you find a way to sneak in more liquid? Between not having it 30 minutes before you eat and after you eat five times a day really limits the amount of time you have! I don't think I'm awake enough hours in the day

    Any April Surgery Dates?

Awww. I’m sure - it’s quite an emotional journey and so much going on for the body and mind. Baby steps is all it’s going to be about now. I’m doing pretty alright. Def much better week 2 in the pain dept. Trying to get closer to protein and water goals with each passing day. I struggle with artificial sugar tastes. I’m on puréed and getting very bored with how limited it is (for my program at least), though I had excitement when I came across a recipe for baked ricotta and it was absolutely delicious. Hoping my appts coming up next week advance me to soft foods.
  5. Hello friends! 2 and 1/2 years out post VSG, donated a kidney to my daughter 15 months ago and had a full tummy tuck with muscle repair 5 ish months ago, here is my issue/concern. I have seen my Bariatric team, primary dr, kidney transplant team and I am still have no real understand of what’s happening!!! they slapped a Dexcom on me die to crazy blood sugars. Spike to over 350 and at night drop below 40, yes I said 40. Full on symptoms of hypoglycemia aboit 4 days out of the week despite anything I try with my diet. The endo ordered acarbose for me three times a day, I’m carrying glucagon nasal spray for my lows that get bad. all my blood tests come out pretty good, my A1c is a little higher than I would like it and they are throwing around things like insulin resistance (blood tests don’t show it), pre diabetes and insulinoma. My Bariatric team is a little concerned because they have never had to treat anyone with acarbose (anti-diabetic medication) and it isn’t supposed to lower my lows at all but help lower my spikes after meals. I’m eating super low carb and high protein and all the dietitian could give me for advice was to cut out bananas. Has anyone here out a year or two dealt with such a thing. I can’t take a lot of medications due to only having one kidney?? im just out of ideas and options !!!

    March 23 buddies yet?

I found this image and it has given me so much comfort. I've also been doing a lot of Googling bc my surgery center hasn't given much guidance around anything other than protein and liquid goals. From what I've read, at this time post-op I should be getting around 500 cals per day, and eating 1/4 c. to 1/2 c. at each sitting (every 3-4 hrs). For reference, I was sleeved on 3/24/23. I look at multiple sites of reputable surgery centers before I decide what to "believe". Hang in there friends! We got this!

    Any April Surgery Dates?

I am about 75% of the way to my 60 gram a day protein goal most days. There is a 3:1 protein to veggie bite rule…3 bites of protein to 1 bite of veggie or fruit. So this way if you get full you will have eaten more of the protein. I am currently off of all diabetes medicine including trulicity. Fingers crossed it will stay that way.

    Any April Surgery Dates?

Hi, friend. I had bypass on the 11th and I'm definitely still struggling with some fatigue and light-headedness, although starting on soft foods has definitely helped. Are you meeting your protein goals? I don't think I would be close to mine without my one protein shake that I throw in some decaf iced coffee in the morning. Did they have you stop your Trulicity after surgery? That would definitely account for your numbers going up. I stalled weight loss wise for a few days too and then saw a big drop yesterday. I hope sincerely that your lightheadedness goes away and your energy comes back very soon. ❤️ Edit: "I stalled" not "installed"

Pain When Eating - NOT Stomach Pain

Update! I am one month and three weeks post-op, and I've had some dramatic improvements. Chewing thoroughly has helped the most with the pain, though some foods still do not go down easy (smoked sausage, heavily fried foods, etc.), but not a whole lot. I got sick once when I ate some asparagus and tomatoes (cooked), but I think I ate them too quickly. It was not very bad, but it was unpleasant, as getting sick always is. I also had blood tests, and all of my numbers went down! I'm most excited for my cholesterol, as it's 185 and was over 200 previously. Most days, I start with a protein shake for breakfast, then a higher protein pasta with lots of fiber (handfuls of spinach, lettuce, tomatoes, etc.), and some pre-cooked meat for lunch. Lean Cuisine protein meals are perfect sizes for me right now, though I don't finish them all. I don't want to overly rely on frozen food, but on the days I don't feel like eating what I cooked, it's a nice option to have. Dinner is usually soup - Proper Good is my favorite, made with lots of bone broth for extra protein, or Amy's soups. Snacks include mini Babybel cheeses, protein puddings, Greek yogurt, and Braniac brain bars. I have PCOS, so I try to eat to balance my hormones with an emphasis on protein and a healthy amount of good fats and fiber. I have lost 35 pounds so far, and I can't tell a difference yet physically, but my energy levels are SO MUCH BETTER. I don't feel like I'm constantly fatigued, and I've been able to do loads of spring cleaning after a full work day. I was cleared to start resistance training, so in addition to walking for 30 minutes 5x a week, I'm incorporating 2-3x a week of resistance workouts. They're small right now, and not very intense (10 minutes tops), but I like to think it'll still benefit me. 😅 Thank you to everyone who's been replying to me. I really appreciate it!

    Any April Surgery Dates?

Worried I am doing something wrong and looking for some insights. Had gastric bypass on 4/12 and over all feeling better each day. I am noticing my morning fasting blood glucose levels starting to climb. Was in the 90s in the hospital and now this morning at 124. Pre op was on trulicity 1.5 1x a week for type 2 diabetes. I still get very tired easy and am lightheaded most of the day. Have had some vision changes since surgery as well. Starting weight 231 - 4/20 today 224 which has not changed for 3 days post op weight 239 went up day after surgery and is now at 224 Started foods on Sunday with dr recommended : 3oz protein and half cup veggie2x a day or fruit 1x a day - every meal is measured and strict to guidelines. My surgeon does not allow any protein shakes or any processed food of any kind. drinking minimum 64oz water up to walking 1.5-2 miles per day

    Stricture

Hi, I had RNY on 12/20/22 in Ohio. About a month after surgery, it was discovered I had a stricture. I had two upper endoscopies and was stretched back to 12mm. (They could not measure my stricture at first because they couldn't get the scope in. She guessed it was between 4-5mm). Since I had to wait for an appointment I didn't really eat solid food for a month. I "ate" Liquicel to get my protein in. I am now 4 months out. The stricture is gone and I feel good. Since I missed an entire month of eating and had to start back at pureed foods - do you think that is why my hair is already falling out? Now 4 months out, I eat my protein goals and do fine with water. I am not super concerned about the hair but just wonder if that could be causing it?

    Snacks

There are a few brands of "cheese crisps" that are basically cheese that has been baked or freeze-dried to resemble a chip/crisp (I know we have a lot of people from all over so I'm saying it's a crispy, thin thing like the US calls "chips"). They're made of just cheese and seasonings so they don't have any carbs to speak of and have a little protein and I find them much more appealing than the "protein chips" which I feel have a really off-putting texture. The bag is generally small and purse-sized as well. I know one brand of that sort of thing is "Moon Cheese" and they sell them in the snack section at Starbucks but there are several brands out there. Taco Bell was even making spicy ones for a bit that I got at the grocery store.
  13. Yes I did and truthfully, and honestly he about killed me. Tools were left inside of me. I had a leakage when I was there, and he acted like it was not a big deal but it was I was septic. I got on my plane to go back to the United States three days later, which takes longer than that for you to go in complete septic. When I got the United States, I instantly was transferred by ambulance from airport. Five surgeries later to save my life. Each one not expecting to live. Now I do not have a stomach at all and only half of my intestines and cannot get enough protein and because of that I have had a heart attacks degenerative bone disease and multiple other elements. Whatever you do, do not go to this guy. I would not say this if it was not true. Nothing can change what happened to me but at least I can let other people know not to live the life I am living. This guy should be imprisoned and never let go. And the problem is there’s nothing you can do about it because it’s a different country.

    April surgeries

I just had my RNY surgery April 11. I was only on clear liquids for 2 days. I was able to have decaf coffee no milk. I did do chicken broth, but what tasted better was the Lipton Noodle soup w the noodles strained out. Also had the tropical coconut Protein20 protein water. I’ve tried recovery water and did not like it.

    April surgeries

My surgery is tomorrow. I’m excited and a bit nervous. I got a chicken Protein Powder and mixed it with home made Bone Broth and omg that has really helped with the cravings. I do one strawberry or banana Protein Shake for Breakfast. For lunch I mix the chicken Protein powder with the broth. I don’t do much for dinner. But throughout the day I  drink some of the Gatorade protein zero Water and also just Gatorade zero or Powerade zero. My pre-op diet was for two weeks and it was just liquids. My staring weight was 231 and I’m at 210 now and my surgery is tomorrow.

    April surgeries

Hi,I am new here. Getting my surgery on 4/25. Anyone in the preop diet? I’m on shakes and clear liquids. Any ideas of what liquids you taking that are good? I am really not hungry just get tired of chicken and beef broth. Having occasional dizziness. I really dislike the liquid protein I tried. Look forward to hearing your stories.

    Pre-op diet

They are calling it the liver shrinking diet. I can have a protein shake for breakfast and lunch. And 3 oz of lean protein and 1 cup of vegetables and a choice of whole grain pasta or brown rice. Or some fruit. I have a few options for snacks. It equals out to roughly 600-800 calories per day. I aim for 60-80g protein, 64+ oz of fluid, and under 60 carbs.

    Hurry Up and Wait!

I chose a doctor who specializes in this - and only this - with an entire team in his practice dedicated to the same. I was assigned a coordinator who knew exactly what we needed and when. I finished my reqs in a week and insurance approved me in a single day. My biggest hold up was the doctor going on vacation for two weeks 😂 First consult Jan 30, final appointment 2/17, surgery on March 13th. Note: based on your posts, I wouldn’t let that woman touch me with a ten foot pole unless there was no other option and even the Devil was booked solid. Good luck to you!

    Hurry Up and Wait!

So you got options. But let me start with this advice, that will help you stay sane. Do not judge others journeys against your own. You will go crazy. I finally had surgery after three attempts, I will lay out each timeline. First surgeon, Meeting in november, decided to start program in january bc I would meet my deductible and my insurance requirements, I could be done in about 8 weeks, because all I needed was one dietician appt and a physch eval. My insurance added it as a blacklisted item when the year changed over so I didn't get it. This doctor also was heavy on sleeve, and said that bypass wasn't important and he felt was overdone. Second. Was going to go to mexico. I filled out the only paper, and had a call with a coordinator in 48 hrs with approval. LIterally could have scheduled 2 weeks out, If I had the money in hand. I would have had a 14 day clear diet with them or else they could have gotten me in sooner, lol. Custody battle took my surgery money, so, cancelled. Third time the charm My surgeon was heavy bypass. And I am glad bc in my EGD they were able to see I had silent reflux and lots of ulcers. So I needed bypass regardless. I had my first appt May 2nd, and was given a list of requirements that my surgeon had, and another sheet with my insurance requirements. My Ins reqd a phych eval, a dietician clearance, and a recommendation letter. My surgeons office requires phych eval, 4 dietician classes to be completed 1x a week while on preop diet, 1 dietician meeting a month prior to start preop, EGD, and if needed based on medical records cardio and EKG. I left the appt on May 2nd with my EGD appoint, that was 6 ish weeks out, mid June. I didn't understand that I was supposed to make the phych appt, so that was kinda stalled, but they sent everything to insurance for approval in mid august. I started the 1 month preop labor day weekend and had surgery Oct 3rd. But insurance companies can require things that will make it longer, esp if they require a supervising diet.
  20. I can't seem to shake the blues this morning. I had a vgb 27 years ago and a REY two weeks ago. I gained 20 pounds while in the hospital for my two day stay....and two weeks later I'm still up by 6 (and gained weight the last two days). My calorie intake is NOT causing this weight gain....and my head knows that this is surgery trauma trying to work itself out. But I'm now sitting here questioning everything. I lost 80 pounds prepping for this surgery. I wanted to stop vomiting......I wanted the assist of malabsorption.....but I'm queasy every time I put food in my mouth. I'm uncomfortable with the feeling of food in my pouch. I'm disappointed that my body won't play along. I can't drink enough. I can't stand the thought of having to have two protein shakes a day to get the required protein in. I'm just really wondering why I put myself through all of this again just to feel as miserable as I do in this moment?

    Dietitian

Please do not worry about your weight so much. My surgeon asked me to keep a low carb high protein diet. Your weight will fluctuate and they are aware of it. You will be at least two weeks prior to the surgery on a liquid diet and you will loose weight drastically at that time.
  22. Carol Memaw

    Dietitian

I went in at 191 but I am only 5', have diabetes, high cholesteral and high blood pressure. My was approved. at least 2 before your surgery the dr will put you on a diet with liquids and proteins. so they will be expecting you to lose a little. I wouldnt stress over losing a few pounds, I think it depends on health improvements they expect to happen

    Hungry...all the time

My hunger hasn't stopped either, I was hoping it would. I'm at my 3rd week and sure enough have not lost in a few days, actually gained a couple of pounds. I know it's expected so I won't worry yet 😕 I have not had any issues with anything I have tried to eat, tastes haven't changed. I usually eat anywhere between 600-800 a day depending what I have. I am concentrating on protein and eat about every 2.5 hours per what my Dr. has said.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

So, I'm 2/3 of the way through my self imposed 90 day challenge to lose what I could lose before my next Dr appointment. In the first 30 days, I lost 10 lbs. In the second 30 days I gained about 4. Not great. However, here is my observation... On day 25, I began taking some supplements to try to stop muscle loss. I began taking Creatine, Carnitine and Leucine along with my protein shakes. In the last 30 days, I have gotten stronger at the gym, my workouts have been able to be more intense and my pant size is getting looser... depending on the brand and pant style cut, I'm between a 38 and even a 36!... I just bought a pair of shorts on Friday that are size 36... I have no idea when I did that last. So, in 28 days, I see my Dr again. At this point, I hope I can break into the upper 240's by then, but it's going to be tough. It's a far cry from my goal of 236, but I'm still working.

    Hungry...all the time

I like you felt hungry after surgery, and since I started working out hungrier sooner. Prior to surgery I was like that too, get full fast but hungry often. What I found has help is sticking to an eating schedule, your body gets used to it. I start feeling hungry about 30min or so prior to my eating time which reminds me to stop my fluids to eat. If its before then if i sip some protein shake that helps a lot. Sent from my SM-S916U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
