    Unbelievable that I did this!!

If you don't indulge when you have the craving, then you'll end up gorging eventually and that's even worse. I, unfortunately, have had to remove ice cream from my list -- I've had some 2x since surgery -- one time about 3 bites and another about 5-6 bites and apparently my new smaller stomach doesn't like it anymore as it came back up within 15 minutes of eating it ... so I'm not willing to give it another try ... thank goodness frozen yogurt seems to stay down okay. If I have a craving for something, then I eat a bite or two - that generally gets rid of the craving and I don't feel the least bit guilty for it at all.
  2. For me it was 3. The second was too tight! If I can pass on any knowledge if this thing after 3 years I would day do not suffer with an over filled band! I was sick every other day and when I got a slight infill it really did the trick Snd no I didn't gain weight I lost after the unfil. I love being free of uncontrollable hunger I just isn't there any longer. Cravings for b&j yogurt ...there still there but that's it! It's amazing ! B

    getting enough protein.......

70? I guess different doctors recommend different amounts? My doctor said to shoot for 45 grams for non menstruating women and 55 for those who are menstruating. I eat a lot of chili - thats great protein! (large chili at wendy's has 28 grams) Also you can buy non flavored Protein powder at walmart and put it in anything...applesauce, yogurt, shakes, etc. I like to make a choc Peanut Butter shake with my herbalife choc mix, a tablespoon PB2 (powdered peanut butter - can use regular lowfat) and then add extra protein - it is like a heavenly chocolate dessert and I feel like I am getting something fabulous like dairy queen. LOL I use the vanilla herbalife shake and put in frozen fruit, skim milk, and extra Protein Powder, too. I know they tell us not to drink a lot of our protein - but I cannot eat more than a cup at a time and even then sometimes I can't eat much - so this is the only way I can get in my protein....and since I hit my "sweet spot" I am never hungry anyway... Good luck to you! Kim

    getting enough protein.......

My doc has said 60-70 as well for protein intake. I plan 1 snack a day but again that was his instruction. I do have the unflavored protein powder from GNC. I do my best to get most of it via food .. eggs, quiche, tuna, cottage cheese greek yogurt however also add it to the cottage cheese, tuna, even DD ice tea.. it litterally has no flavor so I can make almost anything high in protein.
  5. Here is how I make yogurt more filling. Chobani fruited Greek yogurt (6 oz. other brands are only 5.3 oz). Mix in 1/2 a scoop whey isolate protein powder (vanilla for peach or pinapple, chocolate for cherry or raspberry), splendra to taste, 1 tsp unflavored benefiber. Mix well. Then add in a couple chopped walnuts, Kashi Go Lean high protein cereal (measure out using scoops from protein powder I normally do two.). This is a lot more filling than plain yogurt. I can usually last about 4 hours.

    Unbelievable that I did this!!

I was lactose intolerant before the surgery - however, it affected me differently (out the other end) and I didn't throw up - so there were times when I would suffer the consequences and eat some ice cream -- however, I don't like throwing up so I will now pass on ice cream. I tried lactaid before surgery and it didn't really seem to make a difference in the reaction my body had to ice cream so I gave up on it. I don't care to drink milk at all and I actually can enjoy my Golden Spoon frozen yogurt as much as I did ice cream. I can't tolerate much of anything sweet as it is soooo very sweet tasting to me.

I started my chewable vitamins on Monday. I get them from the doctor and they include everything I need except I need to supplement with extra Vitamin D. I'll start on soft foods this Sunday. It will be nice not to have to blend everything. That gets old. I've got some unflavored protein powder and I mix that in with sugar free pudding or in yogurt, etc. It doesn't change the flavor that much and it's a way to get it in. You could mix it into soup also. The Pure Protein drinks are good too. I like the chocolate. You can get them from Sams or Costco and I think even some of the grocery stores and pharmacies sell them in smaller packs.

Hi I've had a tiny few bites of mashed potatoes but they were very filling with no nutritional value! I haven't had anything bother me yet I add a little milk and cheese to my eggs and can now eat one egg but it is sooo filling! Have you tried avocado yet? I just got approved for soft foods like cheese eggs yogurt soy and skim milk but your right it's hard to mix when you can't eat very much of portions! I hope your able to enjoy those small amount of foods I'm still struggling with my protein as any protein shake makes me nautious and get sick! I'm worried about hair loss without the protein! I just started my vitamins are you taking the multi vitamin with calcium and iron?

Does anyone feel hungry after you eat?

I noticed it's been quite awhile since you were banded. Did you ever get filled to the point that you didn't feel hungry 1 1/2 hrs. after eating a meal?. I was banded 4 months ago, have had 4 fills and am just this week feeling hopeful that the surgery worked. I'm trying really hard to only eat solid food with a yogurt and protein powder 3 hrs later to hold me over. I starting to lose again.

    Taste change?

You'll find as you go on that your taste definitely does change as does you food choices, and favourites. I'm 8 months post MGB, and am a self diagnosed carb-aholic...at least I was pre-surgery. This month I have a weird desire for watermelon. Lol. I know...it's crazy. I went through a sunflower stage this late Fall which I chalked up to a need for salt. White bread, potatoes, donuts, etc cause my guts to gurgle like a babbling brook. Gas, so I stay away from them. I get my carb fix from fruit. I really enjoy fruit now. The taste is sweet, satisfying, and sits well. I love fat-free yogurt with red seedless grapes tossed in, and multigrain toast with Peanut Butter and a sliced banana on top about an hour after my morning Protein shake. Delish. Enjoy the journey. It's a trip of self discovery, and is amazing what twists and turns take place every day. BTW...in the past 8 months I've gone from 320 lbs to 193, got rid of type 2 diabetes, high BP and cholesterol, sleep apnea and GERD. BEST GIFT YOUVE EVER GIVEN YOURSELF!
  12. I am 4 months out and was going thru the same thing. I talked to my diatician and increased my calories to 1000-1100 because I wasnt eatting enough. I was constantly hungry and found myself snacking a lot. I started working out 5 days a week and my body was in starvation mode. Now I use my fitness pal and track every single thing that goes into my mouth and all of my activities. I have only one protien shake a day by primer protien bc its 30g of protien a day and only 1g of sugar. I love all their flavors. Usually I have it for breakfast with a greek yogurt. I also plan every single meal and snack for the day and put it in my fitness pal the day before. If its not in my lunch box or recorded in my fitness pal it doesn't touch my lips. Someone told me this and it has really been my montra and what keeps me so on track and dedicated to the daily planning: If you fail to plan you plan to fail. And since I have been living by this the last few weeks the scale has been finally moving.
  13. Go to your surgeon, just to ensure you're fine/or not & be honest about your concerns/pain, etc. I still get spasms at 4 mos out & it helps that my nutritionist (one of 3 free ongoing monthly group support seminars offered by my surgeon) said, "Your stomach's the size of an egg, make a sunnyside up egg so you can see what you can hold. Eat slowly & chew like crazy, don't drink anything for 30 min before/after. Cut your food into sm bites, arrange the bites into the Alphabet, starting w 'A' & take a bite once you've made that letter. Then arrange the next bites into 'B' and so forth. Do this w every meal." I can only handle about 3 baby forks of regular foods & I still can't eat meats (they come right back up), but I can eat eggs, NF/SF: cheeses, cottage cheese & Greek yogurts, and fish (a few bites of each), in addition to the broths, popsicles, fudgesicles, creamsicles, puddings & jellos. I've eaten 2 bites of an English muffin, a slice of cooked bacon & 2 sausages (at separate times, w my egg). Since I tend to still inhale my food, I find that I'm my own worst enemy (self-sabotage) and I'm seeing a therapist to deal w my body dysmorphic & eating issues. I make myself shrimp fetticcine & eat 3 bites on a baby fork (also use a baby spoon). I'm a foodie & chef so I make everything fresh. I make soups/broths, but still can't eat French Onion, Chicken, Veggie, etc. soups (just made myself some, but will try again at 6 mos out). Going to get an avocado & hope I can eat a little bit. Sm victories like eating a few bites of an avocado, are so important. I'm still getting my 3 90 gms shakes in daily, because I'm learning to eat correctly & need the protein. I do get in at least 80 oz of liquids daily, aside from my shakes. As long as you check in w your surgeon/nutritionist to ensure you're doing everything correctly, don't worry about what you can't eat, but focus on what you can eat & be gently and loving to yourself at all times. I've been exercising since the day of surgery and if walking is good for you, do that & enjoy your own journey. I got a flu shot, came down w the flu, so haven't done much for almost a week but walk my dogs! When I feel well, I'll get my 2.5 ml walks in. Please forget about comparing yourself to anyone else on their own journeys: what I've learned is to just get support here on these forums as everyone else is following their own individual paths to health & wellness. Namaste.

I am not doing well on pre-op diet...

Optifast Our doctors differ slightly in the pre-op diet. The GOAL is to shrink the fatty liver so that the surgeons have less to 'work around' remember that the stomach lies under the liver... and that the liver is a very large organ. So now you know why it is important. If the optifast is nasty try MY doctors pre-op diet. Non-fat or 1% Cottage cheese, non fat sugar free yogurt, now of these things you don't have to weight or measure, if your hungry eat it... I especially liked Cottagecheese mixed with sweetner of choice and cinnamon... pretty good. another bandster said he got through it by mixing MUSTARD with his cottage cheese (I havn't tried it) and Yogurt, well I've always liked it... I went to Toronto Lap Band Centre and Dr. Yau has done 1000's of these proceedures in Canada and this is the diet we all followed. If we really rebelled then the Nutritionist would let us have broiled chicken breast(no fat in prep.) and green salads in addition to the yogurt and cot. cheese I hope this helps and that the time you wait for your surg goes quickly... Hang in there, you'll be so happy on day of surg when you are down those BONUS lbs. Trust me

    3 Week Surgiversary

So today is my 3 week surgiversary. I have lost 22 pounds and have gone down one jean size so far. I am still eating soups and yogurts because of the tight feeling I get when I try to eat anything thicker. I have really started to want a glass of wine. Just to relax some nights. But Im scared. Everything I read says 3 months or more. Socially it has been weird too. Some people ask why Im not drinking alcohol anymore or at a meeting when lunch is served, I have to make excuses. One friend always declares how bad something tastes in my presence as to make me feel better about not being able to eat whatever she's eating. So there has been lots to get used to but at night when I get home and I see how nicely my cheek bones are becoming defined, I don't care about the excuses or the giant chocolate chip cookie I wasn't able to enjoy. I had my surgery in Monterrey, Mexico. I live (because of work) in Mexico City. I will be going home (to Chicago) in a week to see my family for the first time since the surgery. I know they are going to look me up and down for changes. Hopefully, they can see them right away. I fear hearing...you look the same. Anyway, these are just my random thoughts I have been having. Stuff I don't bother telling my friends because the novelty of my surgery and it's little issues has worn off for them. Happy holidays all!!
  17. Glad it helps. My doctor has a similar restriction on carbs. carbs need to be under 10grams per meal and same thing with sugar--under 10grams too. He doesn't want any Protein shakes b/c they will go right through the system. He also has me stop drinking Water 1/2 before I eat and don't start until a 1/2 hour after i eat. . . otherwise it will flush the food that i do eat right through my system. Takes alittle bit getting used too, but it has definately helped. My doctor REALLY pushes the Proteins, that comes first. At phase II, they recommend that I get around 70 grams of protein in. I can drink milk (1% or skim) and that counts for both beverage and protein. What I found to help is with Greek yogurt, for example, I will take a serving and mix some vanilla flavoring in it and i will also add a teaspoon of powdered milk---it gives me a little extra protein too. If i make tuna/egg or chicken salads, i also mix some extra shreeded lowfat cheese into it and it gets me some extra protein. The big push for the water is that carbs contain more water than proteins. . . so with pushing high protein and low carbs, you have to make sure you are providing your body with enough liquids, otherwise you can dehydrate yourself. And on top of it all. . . . required 60 minutes of walking. I have a treadmill in the basement. I have not done 60 minutes all at once. . . i break it up into small amounts. So for example, while my dinner is baking, I'll grab 15 minutes there. After dinner, I'll grab maybe 20 minutes before i begin my "veg out" mode for the evening, I grab 15 minutes in the morning before i shower. . . when you break it up it makes it a whole lot easier to get it all in.
  18. I like the ideas she just gave above. When I knew I was doing this journey I started to change my life so it wouldn't be quite as hard once it was here haha so I don't honestly know what I'll do when I'm back to solids (1 week postop). However I eat a paleo diet (anything you can hunt or gather) so I'd do omlettes in this baggies you can boil, eggs, onions, veggies, etc. and then you throw them in the micro and poof omlette. You can reuse them over and over even though ziploc or whatever says 1 use . I'd boil at least a dozen eggs every week so there was always a go to protein. I'd make almond meal pancakes or sizzle up some sausage and put them in the plastic reusable things so mornings which are always rushed we could just micro stuff and eat in 30 seconds flat. Also got a magic bullet and would do baggies of spinach smoothies which had fruits, spinach, protein powder, etc. all mixed and then just add some greek yogurt or 1/2 c juice in blender at time of making - super easy so yummy. Most of the stuff would last about a week in a baggie since I used fresh so never tried to do more than 1 week. As for lunches sometimes sandwiches but I don't eat grains so for me it was usually turkey roll ups, cucumber slices, chicken salad, etc. or pull all the meat off rotis. chicken and divvy it up, etc. and then I'd make a trail mix once a week and have it all bagged up in 4 oz packages, etc. so that there is always *something* I can take. I'm the queen of running out of time and not knowing what to eat so either fast food or starving neither of which is good for me.

    Life Abroad with VSG

I find its easier to buy plain or plain Greek yogurt. No need to look at labels then. I add my favourite sweetener or honey and fruits. In Egypt I would be eating figs and dates with it. If you struggle to get protein shakes, Use a tip that I was given, drink skimmed milk with a tablespoon of milk powder added to bump up the protein. I added fruit and occasionally peanut butter to it and blended it smooth. You can add yogurt to this too. If you say what kinds of foods you want to cook the people on here can give you the recipes

Snacking - hard time staying full :/

I can relate to OP's dilemma! I can't eat more than a few bites of meat protein then feel stuffed. But an hour later I'm hungry again. And keeping it real I will fill up on the snack food because it feels good to eat something and not feel stuffed after a few bites. I'm 6 months out. I have been trying to deal with this recently so that I don't end up in trouble eating carbs and junk food all day. What has been helping me is having a Premier Protein shake in the morning after my coffee -- 30 g of protein in me and I feel full for a long time - I need to sip it over an hour or so because it will give me a stomach ache if I just drink it down. According to my NUT, I should not be having shakes this late in the game, but I'm doing what works. Dannon Light and Fit Greek Yogurt (80 calls/12 g protein) is also a good snack and has good flavor choices. And I love the Cabot 50% cheddar cheese in the individual servings (50 calories, 5 or 6 g protein I think). Just offering what works for me because I think at this stage in the process we all need variety -- I know the above things work for me but I get sick of having them all the time and that's why I've been reaching for the Doritoes/cookies/other horrible choices. Good Luck!

    Going out to eat...

Soft phase I found a lot of places had cottage cheese hummus or yogurt on their menus. Soup, coffee and tea. If nothing else Good Luck 💙
  23. While I haven't been on a vacation lately, I do have a few ideas that might help. Since Protein and Water should be your main concern.....call ahead to the resort/hotel, tell them you take medication that needs to be refrigerated, and would it be possible to get a room with a fridge? If that's not an option pack one of those collapsible coolers that are like a large insulated sack lunch type. This is to put ice in. A microwave would be great also. On the way to the resort stop and buy, or pack in your luggage (depending on where your going) RTD Protein shakes, or Protein powder, yogurt, string cheese, SF pudding, etc. Also unjury chicken broth is always a good go to. And if it's convenient a case of water, so you'll never be with out it, and some SF water flavoring like crystal light or Mio. You'll be surprised at how many softer foods you can mash the hell out of and be able to eat. Just chew, chew, chew. Enjoy you vacation. Sherri
  24. It's been 10 mths since my band to sleeve revision but I remember that 4 weeks of full liquids like it was yesterday. Definately hard. After being banded in 2009, I only made it to the 2nd week and then I cheated. Regretted it for yrs. I was single back then and it was easier to cheat. It was also easier to cheat knowing I couldn't really damage myself withe the band. But I could with a sleeve. Plus I gained a "food Nazi" husband who woulda tattled on me had I cheated. I got my hunger back on day 10 (was easy till then) and then I could eaten my arm - had I been able to suck my arm thru a straw. I ate tomato and split pea Soup, Jello, sf pudding, yogurt, and popsicles. Hot stuff satiates (not "fills" u asn liquids don't do that much) better than cold stuff. So sip tomato soup. Sip, sip, sip. Gawd, how I wanted a french fry or a taco. But then I'd be paranoid about causing a leak and my craving would go away - for about 5 minutes. Nothing I can say that will make u feel better. Hang in there. It WILL get better soon. No, u won't feel "full" while on liquids but u certainly won't die. I wouldn't rush out there and eat something - just in case ur the 4% that get a leak. When ur able to eat soft foods, it will get much better. Good luck!
