    NSV shout outs

Thank you so much! wish we could go shopping together! one month later and I am now having to remove a lot of the skinny clothes and buy some new ones. TJ maxx tomorrow and Good will on Sunday (99c day) because things are too baggy for me to stand it. I *have* to tuck my shirts in to keep my pants up. I would not have believed you three months ago had you told me. Ok so if we are planning this... where do you live? I can cross the US border near Vancouver BC But if your like in Texas or Australia.. that might be a little more difficult. Lol

    Spilling the beans

Msujester....asking this question honestly, not trying to poke at you here but....when those people asked her point blank if you'd had surgery, what did you truly want her to do? Did you want her to say "ask him" BC that's giving it away really.....if she said "I don't know" that would seem unlikely......or did you want her to lie and say "no"? I'm not saying it was ok for her to share it with everyone in your social circles, and the fact that she told so many people certainly points to the reality that she's not good with secrets (small ones or serious ones)....but did you expect her to lie? Did you want her to lie? And if you did want her to lie.....I think a lot of us can understand that. But if it's true that those folks asked her point blank and when she was alone, she was in a weird situation. AND they weren't so respectful, either. Sorry this is going on. 3. My whole family struggles with their weight but I'm the heaviest. My mom was on diets my whole life growing up. My dad was always had a big belly. My brothers struggled with obesity for a while but both of them made big lifestyle changes and are in the normal BMI category (one of them is an ethical vegan and the other suffered some pretty serious mental health problems and he's feeling much better after cutting sugar, gluten, and eating a plant-based diet). Neither of them did it for weight loss but weight loss was a consequence of their dietary changes so it works for them! Part of the reason I had WLS was because I have a young son and I don't want him to fall into bad habits the way I did when I was little. Full sugar soda, lots of candy, processed foods, fried foods... I ate a lot of that growing up because I ate what my parents prepared for me, as with any child. If I fed my boy the way I used to eat, I'd set him up for childhood obesity and after going through that myself, that's the last thing I want for him. I'm not fanatical about it or anything. I just quietly feed him fruits, veggies, lean meats, whole grains, and cheese without being preachy about it. I don't want him to think food is an issue, something you have to control, something to reward or punish yourself with, or have it imbedded into his emotions somehow. I don't know if there's really anything I can do about that because of our culture but I'm doing the best I can at home to give him a good start and enjoy fresh, healthy foods. I also want to be lighter so I can keep up with him. As I lose weight, movement is easier, and it'll keep getting easier with less fat holding me down. I don't want him to perceive exercise as atonement for a poor diet or something he HAS to do to stay healthy. I want him to enjoy moving for the fun of it (like riding bikes, swimming, running through sprinklers, playing games and sports, etc.). He'll be naturally inclined to do these things as a little kid but I want him to keep moving as he gets older and not sit on his butt in front of the TV like I did. I see the mistakes my parents (unknowingly) made with me and I'm doing what I can to avoid these mistakes with my son. I know I'm going to screw up somewhere, but I hope I can at least prevent him from developing a weight problem because once obesity happens it doesn't go away without major interventions, as we all have learned.

  6. This is really helpful, thanks. And Cervidae, yep, I am in therapy and will continue....I know this weight did not happen only bc I thought food was delicious, it's bigger than that for certain. In fact last night I was having dinner with my husband, who runs marathons and considers a Sunday bike ride to be 70 miles, and I kept saying over and over, "But what does normal feel like? What's it like to move through the world WITHOUT this protective bubble? How will I know if people are really good people deep down, if I don't have this barrier that they have to be open to overlooking? Am I suddenly going to be angry at people who once judged me, but are nicer if I'm thinner?" I am really giving a lot of thought to the head piece. I think that's going to be the most overwhelming piece for me. If my physical healing goes well, and I fervently hope it does, I still think the biggest part of this journey is going to happen between my ears. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  7. Just an update for whoever wants to know. I had the surgery on March 28th and I went to a festival this past weekend. I ended up doing Molly and was 100% fine i just stayed hydrated. It honestly felt the same as it did pre-surgery. I also drank a lot (6-8 drinks) non carbonated Smirnoff filled with sugar (unfortunately) and was fine as well. The only thing was it hit me faster, and less alcohol got me drunk (also could of been because I did not eat). I also tried wine and was fine with that. A sip of beer did not sit well bc of the carbonation. I also ended up smoking about 2 packs of cigarettes in 2 days ( i was a smoker pre-op). But overall, I did not get sick, I did not throw up, I am back to normal, although it took my body a day to recover (which would of been the same pre -op). Everyone's body is different so please don't think you will have the same results. Just wanted to share my experience. The only bad thing was that I didn't really eat for two days trying to counteract the calories from the alcohol, and it messed up my weight loss progress and set me back about a week - because in addition I didn't make it to the gym. My ending point is, I had tons of fun, and I do not regret anything but for me, I will def stay away from that stuff again for awhile to continue on my weight loss journey!
  8. Still deciding between the sleeve and RNY. At the first info session I went to, they stressed how the sleeve made hunger go away bc they removed the part of the stomach that produced gherkin. They didn't mention hunger going away with the RNY, and since the RNY diagram showed the entire stomach remaining in the body (even though it was divided) I assumed hunger must still be an issue after RNY. Attended a different program's info session last night, and they said hunger also goes away after RNY. Has this been true for you? Are you less physically hungry? Do you think about food less often? I am very hungry often, so I was leaning to the sleeve to help mitigate that, but I prefer the long term success DATA of the RNY. Please let me know how your hunger levels changed, and if your thoughts became les. "Food-obsessed"? Thank you. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Nothing to speed up weightloss like divorce

Way not to take his BS and transfer of responsibility. He does need to own this if there is any chance for healing. He needs to rebuild the trust he destroyed. That is a long row to hoe. I hope he's not trying to buy his way back in. You might want to check out this site: https://www.gottman.com/ I think Dr. Gottman has some of the best materials for helping to communicate better and building trust.

    Full?

Measuring is good: best advice my NUT ever gave me is: do NOT use your sleeve as a measuring cup. I used medicine cups for the first 4 weeks. I bought a set of about 36 new single serve containers so that I can make a batch of just about anything and freeze it, so my freezer is always well stocked with a healthy lunch or dinner. I still have trouble when I eat out because the portions are SO enormous and often so incredibly greasy. Keep in mind I use a ton of grass fed butter and full fat cheeses and other stuff in my own cooking but restaurant food is often just swimming in oil.
  11. Having a hard time deciding, the idea of rerouting my intestines scares me as my mom had to have her intestines resectioned when her ovarian cancer spread and she never healed inside properly, developed a fistula, it was awful. But maybe that was bc she was weakened from cancer and maybe I would heal just fine? However, my BMI is 49/50 and I think I might have a better tool with the bypass. Also I was at an info session last night at Duke, and honestly.....it was pretty compelling to hear that there's 20 years of data on the long term success of the RNY, and no long term data yet on the sleeve. It made me think that everyone who jumped on the lap band train years ago also took a chance on something with no long term data (at the time), and with the data NOW available on the band I don't want it. The surgeon described the RNY as the "gold standard" bc of that long term success. Did you have a hard time deciding? What tipped you to the RNY? Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

  13. Thanks for the replies....the idea of dumping worries me bc my 20 year old daughter (who is thin) lives with a digestive issue that sometimes causes her to feel faint, nauseous, and in serious pain....and it looks pretty awful. Hers has to do with her colon, and the only treatment is to have her colon removed. I know dumping has nothing to do with the colon, but when she and I heard the symptoms, we couldn't believe how it sounded just like her pain/condition. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Help with protein shakes

When preparing for surgery I stocked up with hundreds of dollars of a variety of high quality organic and grass fed whey and protein powders. I hated them all. A friend turned me onto doctor axe collagen powder and I have been using it for the last five months to get enough protein. Collagen powder is also known to be very good for skin hair and nails! This particular collagen powder is high-quality, and it dissolves completely and tastelessly into anything. I drink it in my coffee. It is a priceless nutritional support for me. And recent bloodwork indicates that I am getting plenty of protein just by doing this!

Maybe 4 business days. But from what I am seeing, I think BCBS of AZ (Fed group tho) is exemplary and may be the exception to the rule.

    Not getting a clear answer

Seriously??? OMG, that's utterly ridiculous! I called several times to BCBS AZ (Fed plan) and was treated so well and all my questions were answered. Yes, they had their requirements and the surgeon had his, but they should still quote benefits. I did medical billing for 13 years and this is the norm!
  19. Hi, I think all insurance companies have requirements for conversion surgery. I just had my band converted to a sleeve 6 days ago. I'm so glad it is gone, but the whole process is an ordeal. So many hoops to jump through and then the surgery itself was rough for me. I have BCBS Fed. If you call member services on your insurance card or look in your patient benefit book, it should outline the requirements. @@Felisha602

Submitted to Blue Shield of California!

Hi there, my husband and I have BCBS Fed and we were both approved. Hubby had bmi at 38 with diabetes and other comorbidities and I had bmi of 38 with only sleep apnea. Hubby is a newbie....but i, like you, was a revision. The band was problematic for 10 years but finally decided to jump thru all the hoops. We actually switched from another insurance during open season because the insurance gal in the office said bcbs was the best for approvals of bariatric. Good luck!

  22. Here's a little follow up since my original post!! I am now almost 3 week post op! I feel fantastic! In my original post I was so nervous about my sons class trip to the zoo that was 2 weeks post op. Well I had no problem going on that trip last week. I had energy to keep up. I just started pureed that day so I packed extra water with me and kept sipping all day and a yogurt for lunch time. I took a few spoonfuls of yogurt and was fine. No one else thought anything of it. The following day I had plans with a friend for my son and I to come over for a pizza play date. We went and I just said i was on a special diet brought a yogurt with me and declines the wine for water due to my "diet". The first few days post op were tiring but after day 3 or 4 I was raring to go. For me meal times were a little tough bc I do have 3 small children to prepare meals for. Breakfast and lunch were no big deal. Dinner was hard to make and sit down with my bowl of broth but it was short lived and it gets easier each day. So far I'm very happy with my decision to get sleeved. As far as keeping the secret to yourself it can be done and I wouldn't worry about anyone else. I'm talking about dieting and exercise with friends so hopefully it just looks like that's where he weight loss came in to play. My advice is just to be confident and this is our story we don't have to live an open book for the world to know. Negative people will make comments whether they no or not so just be confident in yourself and don't let anyone else get in your head! Cheers to you all! Good luck on your journey!! ❤️❤️❤️ Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Can a Icee stretch your pouch

I kind of feel like we have to refute inaccurate information, because if we don't it looks accurate. There are so many people that lurk and read here. If we let BS stand it might harm some other new person, or worse scare someone for surgery. I'm pretty sure at this point she is just a troll that never even had WLS. The app makes these forums far too accessible to all kinds of random people.
  25. Hi I had FEP as well. Keep us posted on the outcome. My guess is that your surgeon will be able to identify at least one co-morbidity in your health history. FEP did not approve my surgery initially bc they thought I was below 35 bmi but they eventually approved when I resubmitted. I would assume as one gets closer to 40 BMI that they would be more willing to approve. Keep us posted!
