Nephrectomy, One Kidney Concerns
Sleevorama replied to Artichokes's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Well, kind of, lol. I haven't been able to do the shakes or fruit drinks or anything yet.....they have been the only thing that make me ill. Now, that being said, I am only 3 wks out of surgery and my NUT said it was not uncommon in the first month to not be able to hit the required protein. I eat Greek yogurt, and pureed bean soups and such so I can get some protein in, but as far as someone telling me to limit my intake, haven't heard that yet. -
Hi. Restless is so right....and so smart. Right after surgery, you just need to make sure you get plenty of liquids and take good care of yourself. Focus on healing. When you get into real foods, you will have to have that 60 grams of protein each day (or whatever your doctor tells you - it is 60 for me). With a protein shake each morning (15 grams) and the protein I eat for my other 2 meals, I usually hit it or come very close. If I need more by the end of the day, I put a scoop of unflavored Whey Protein Powder from GNC into my yogurt. It has 21 grams of protein, doesn't change the flavor of the yogurt, and puts me well over my 60 grams. I was very worried about getting it in too, but it is much easier than it sounds. I use thedailyplate.com to keep track of my meals, calories, protein, etc. Good luck to you!!! Becky

Yogurt has been slowing me down - I SWEAR!
Wheetsin replied to christasha's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Low calorie tends to be high carb and vice versa. If you enjoy yogurt, and carbs seem to have that much effect on you, go for the low carb options over low cal/low fat. You can always omit it and add it from your diet to trend its effect. Maybe it was coincidence, but tracking it for a few weeks will help you figure out for sure. -
Day 1 - Was not nervous at all before surgery. Once they came to wheel me back I don't remember much after that. When they woke me up to remove the breathing tube I felt all clogged and couldn't breathe. Ended up having to have a breathing treatment. The surgical pain wasnt all that bad with all the drugs but the gas pain in the shoulders was pretty bad. Felt like somebody was standing on my shoulders and someone else was standing on my stomach. Once they wheeled me back to my final room for waking up and vitals, it all started to hit me what had happened. My nurse brought me some apple juice and I was apple to sip that down. That seemed like the best tasting thing I've ever had. Juice went down without any problems. When it was time for me leave and they brought me the wheelchair I had some sharp pain getting out of the bed but getting dressed wasnt too bad. The car ride home wasnt bad at all. I arrived at the hospital at 9:30 and was home at 4:30. Slept most the car ride home but bumps in the road would make my stomach bounce and that would momentarily wake me up. Got home and went straight to bed. My wife went and got my meds while I was sleeping. When she got back I awoke and took one Lortab pill and a Gasx pill. The gas pain in the shoulders and in the abdomen seemed to the dominant form of pain. After sipping some more water I started to have some PB's that made things start to feel much better. I ended up falling back asleep and found that laying down not flat but not on my side felt the best. A few times I even laid flat in my back with my legs up like I was frog felt really good to relieve the tension on my stitches. I was up and out of bed around 8 for about two hours. Did some walking, drank some broth, had a few small bites of yogurt and had two Popsicles. No issues with any of that at all. Took another pain pill at 10 and went back to bed. This time lying down was a bit more painful from being up so long but finally found a comfortable position and drifted off. Woke up at 4 to go the bathroom and take another pill. Crawled back into bed and went right back to sleep. Getting out of bed is the most painful. Everything else isn't too bad at all.

I am not starting this thread for actual answers, merely to get it off my chest. I am struggling, I mean really struggling. I am so out of control and I blame noone except myself. I wont clean my house out of these foods because I have done that a million times in my life and it hasnt worked. I have to learn to have them in the house and ignore them, or have them in moderation. I mean, before banding I hated ice cream. I love it now, I have it about 4 times a week. Grrrrr...peanut M&Ms, my biggest downfall. I have great restriction, eat small meals and feel full, then BAM 7.30pm comes...the kids are in bed and I am like a raging animal going through the cupboards looking for food...cant just be anything though...fruit, yogurt or healthy things just dont cut it. Now let me talk about exercise, each night I go to bed thinking tommorow I will start walking or anything. I go to sleep so motivated, and the next day I just cant be bothered. I have to give up smoking for my TT next month. I gave up for 3 days last week and in those 3 days I put on about 5 lbs. it scared the crap out of me and I turned into this psycho that bit the kids head off with anything that came out of my mouth. Hubby didnt want to come home from work...he was scared!!! I have read all the threads...keep temptation out, see the bigger picture, wake up to yourself...I know!!! I really know and I knew it before banding and it didnt work, and nearly 11 months later its not working after banding. I wish I had energy...I wish I wasnt tired all the time, I wish I wasnt addicted to chocolate...I wish I had motivation and I wish I had self control...One more thing, I wish I could give up smoking without going to hell and back in the process. *sigh*

2 days post-op
Wannabeskinnie replied to akreese02's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 2 weeks today. First couple days hurt but each day afterward gets easier. I couldn't really drink either..felt like I woukd explode..but I didn't...just dont get dehydrated. Try your best to walk because this truly is what is going to make you feel better...I have 2 dogs so had no choice but to walk and in hindsight I am thankful I did. But even up til about day 8-9, every time I drank, whether it was Water, Protein drink, warm boullion, or crystal light my belly would spasm for a few seconds..but my dr assured me this was normal and just from the swelling still. It has passed, my incisions are healed, I've lost 19 pounds, I'm walking close to 3 miles a day, my clothes are getting looser, and best of all I can start yogurt and strained Soup today. It will get better for you...if you don't have nausea meds, call your dr. And hang in there, you just had major surgery..don't have regrets! -
Hi, Yes the hunger does subside but the secret is push Water. In order to get veggies and fruit in fresh, wash and blend with water. Here is a green smoothie that helped me curb the hunger and keep my Vitamin intake good. handful of parsley or spinach or any leafy greens 1 green onion 1 tomato small 1/2 cucumber 1 cup low fat yogurt or water blend until completely liquified drink it right away to assure you get your Vitamins. You can also do this with your fruit. Try it with soya milk and fruit its good and feels like you are cheating. As the weight starts to come off you will become motivated and hunger will be controlled. Good luck and let me know in a week how your doing. Remember you can blend anything your family eats with yogurt and drink it. Remember to get in food with Iron in it. I became anemic after surgery.

Okay.... (imaginative exercise #1) Close your eyes.... think about last Thanksgiving... the turkey, the stuffing, the cranberries, the pies, the egg nog, the corn, the Beans, the bread and cornbread, the after dinner wine and then... squeeze in that last piece of pumpkin pie. How do you feel? Like you need a dolly to get you to the couch? As if you could just fall off the chair and roll to the living room couch? Okay... (imaginative exercise #2) Now close your eyes again... eat a couple ritz crackers, 4 oz of yogurt, and a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese.... now picture how you felt on the Thanksgiving exercise above and VIOLA! You have "fullness" feeling. Not painful really, just FULL. This is just how I feel after eating and I am less than one month banded. I think it is actually quite tiring how "full" you feel like your stuffed EVERY meal. I need to work on finding that happy medium but it "sneaks" up on you and all of a sudden you will say after very little food, "MAN, I AM STUFFED" and push the plate aside not even imagining of taking another bite. That's when people look at you like your nuts and get wide-eyed.

I am currently on full liquids and I am trying activia vanilla yogurt for the first time. It's in a 4oz container. Is this too much. It's regular yogurt not Greek. I am letting it liquefy in my mouth before I swallow (that sounded gross.) what are your thoughts?

Need some advice. 30 Pre-Op / Nervous & in the NESTING Stage.
melboyd replied to Lauren448's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Lori, i was banded 11 days ago. Basically i went with my nutritionists instructions, they should be telling you what you can have post-op. I have found through reading this site that every surgeon is different with what they require. that being said, i use the designer whey protein mix (chocolate & caramel peanut chocolate) the first 3 days i had to mix them with water (not great) then i could switch to FF milk. i like them, it tastes like chocolate milk. My first week, i could only have protein shakes (3xs a day) and clear broth and jello. now i have to continue with the protein shakes and can have cream soups, pudding and yogurt! Some things i do recommend having with you are chapstick & gasX strips, possibly liquid tylenol, i got chewable brands of my calcium also because you probably won't be able to swallow pills. Don't forget some good DVDs , books, and magazines to keep you entertained while you are recovering!! Hope that is somewhat helpful. Good luck!!:tongue_smilie: -
I realize that; however if trying to stick under 30 gms of carbs, and there's 10 in the yogurt, that to me seems like a lot for the size of the container.

I eat a lot of: meat (leftovers, deli meat, etc.) eggs (hard-boiled, egg salad, egg bites) string cheese (the 2% milkfat kind, not the full fat kind) cottage cheese (non-fat as I honestly can't taste any difference between full and no-fat cc) yogurt (FAGE has 20 g of Protein per 6 oz. serving) beef Jerky protein hot chocolate (I like the Nashua Nutrition/Healthwise brand the best) Protein shakes (I like Chike the best.) nuts (have to watch the quanities due to the fat, but they make a nice change) I did the bullets for a while, but after a while they made me gag. Milk is okay *in* things, but I can't drink more than 4-8 oz (used to be less) without getting gastric distress. I also sometimes use Protein Bars -- but only ones that have no more carbs than protein) and trail mix that I mix up myself. I also make a protein muffin that has a 3:1 carb to protein that is supposed to be good for recovery from exercise. I make them in a mini-muffin pan and have two after I work out. I think the key is to make every meal and snack protein-based. If you can only eat one egg, have a hard-boiled egg and something else (i.e., instead of crackers which are all carbs). Crackers are easy, but so is beef jerky. If you want crackers, have much less than you normally do, but put some Peanut Butter on them. Yeah, PB can be high in fat, but PB crackers will stay with you longer and have more protein than crackers alone. The other thing I do is cook a lot on the weekends so I have plenty of leftovers. I notice that, when I don't do this, I tend to eat worse because I grab the first handy thing that comes along. That always leads to bad choices IME.

3 Days Post Op.....
Kate Erdosy replied to Deleted Profile's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 8 days out. No nausea, not much pain, no BM yet, first visit today. 6 lbs in 1 week - a bit disappointing, but 12 if I count preop. I'm not feeling much restriction at all when I drink. I may get a tiny bit of pressure, but that's it. I'm starting to wonder if I still have my stomach in there. I am allowed greek yogurt this week and oatmeal, but only 2 ounces. No problems eating those. Am I crazy? Did anyone else have such a smooth road the first week and after eating the first small amounts? I'm not ungrateful at all, but just beginning to wonder. -
Try kefir, it's a fermented milk drink. You should be able to find it at a health foods store, and possibly your grocery store, as well. I grew up on it, but I understand it's a bit of an acquired taste, so I'd start with a flavored one. I'm having a peach one right now, it's like yogurt with a tangy kick. If you like the fruit-flavored ones, you can progress to unflavored kefir, which has fewer carbs. It's a drink that's rich in bacterial cultures, too, so it's good for your gut flora.

Feeling deprived ... Does that go away?
terry1118 replied to Mkmb2006's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Being unable to eat ANYTHING in quantity, no matter what my head told, me helped me get over cravings. Cravings are a mental habit - with time, if you don't feed the habit, it goes away. Try not to look for similar foods to replace your favorites with. From there it's a short step back to old habits. Try to find new healthy favorites. Become a gourmet - eat small amounts of new, delicious, healthier foods and savor the flavors. I'm almost 7months out. I love 2-3 pan seared scallops w/a couple asparagus spears, or 4-5 shrimp cocktail. I savor my yogurt as a sweet desert or snack. A few legume crackers w/spicy hummus make a filling snack. I love full-fat cheese so I indulge in a little now an again. Experiment - not being hungry let's you sample new foods without overdoing it - you'll find your own new favorites. Make it a lifetime change, not a slow transition back to your old habits. :-) -
Okay, the food mourning is starting to kick in.

Although I haven't been sleeved yet- I went through something similar with my banding.... I got over it real quick by continuing those searches and preparing meals for friends and loved ones because I love to cook- Just because I cant eat it didnt mean I lost my zest for it.. Sometimes the smell would fill me up or sometimes a few sips of a broth or sauce etc would be enough to satisfy a "craving"... I look at meat the same way- I am a total carnivore but since my band have really only been able to eat chicken soaked in a sauce or mayo and hamburger meat.. So when/if I feel like pork or steak etc.. (this is going to be gross..) I eat it, chew it but don't swallow it- I just spit it out- That way I am getting the chewing and the flavor in my mouth but it isnt gertting stuck and I can somewhat enjoy it. As far as deserts go- I have re-arranged most all desserts to either be sugar free or less sugar or cooked with a sweetner alternative and they are just as good- sometimes almost too sweet- I NEVER ate sweets or icecream and now Ice cream or frozen yogurt is a staple in my house.. One of the bad habits I picked up from the band.. It will NOT be that way though when I dont have the band.... Don't know if this helps or not but good luck! -
1/2 way thru first day of Pre-op
ericanda1973 replied to CarlinsMom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all, I start my pre op diet on the 25th of july and my surgery day is 8/7/2009, i can have diet soda on mine so i hope that helps me get through it, it is crazy how different drs have different views and ideas on pre op diets. I don't go to my preop app. till July 15th.I think this diet seems pretty easy compared to some of the diet others are on. but according to the book i got here is my pre op diet, Breakfast 10-15 gr of carb less than 200 calorie Low carby Protein supplement Shake/drink Morning Snack 6oz glass V8 or 6 oz of diet OJ lunch 10-15 gr. carbs less then 200 calorie Protein supplement shake/drink dinner 20-25 gram carb 300-350 calories, Frozen meal(Lean cuisine, smart ones) Snack Low carb Protein shake Or 6 oz of light/no added sugar yogurt and 1 oz of mixed nuts or 3 cups unbuttered popcorn or 1 oz cheese and Medium-sized apple, orange or banana can drink unlimited amounts of sugar-free beverages, including reg or decaf coffee, tea , and diet soda. and no more then 2 8 ounce cups of skim milk. -
I’m 3 weeks post sleeve. After moving to purée stage I was feeling hungry more often. Yes get the protein in first. My directions are 1 scoop of protein powder must have 20 gms of protein and below 12 gms of sugar. I mix the protein powder with almond milk. I got a jug of protein powder that tastes terrible so I got some dry peanut butter powder from Amazon for more protein. I mix only 4 ozs almond milk, protein powder 1 scoop, 2 Tbsp of dry peanut powder plus one Tbsp sugar free Greek vanilla yogurt. Tastes like a peanut butter milkshake which if you like peanut butter tastes pretty good. Somewhere I read the difference between head hunger and true hunger. I find that useful. Make sure you are drinking enough water because dehydration can be confused for hunger. My diabetes immediately went away so the surgery was well, well worth it in my book. Good luck!!

Hello, I am almost three months out and I have hit the dreaded plateau for two weeks now without any weight loss. I am told by my NUT to stick with the program, but I really feel bored with my diet. for breakfast, when I don't wat eggs, I eat feta and gouda cheese or low fat greek yogurt, but I read somewhere that these go down quickly and may not be considered "solid food" as such, and cause one to get hungry much sooner. For lunch and dinner I eat a small piece of chicken and grilled veggies. I don't have fruits. I try to get as much water in between as I can. I also feel hungry just an hour or two after the meal. Any of you experience the same? Do you snack or only do three meals a day? I exercise at least three days a week. I am also curious to learn your diets. For instance, how did you break the plateau? do you eat lentil and fava beans (I love both!), fruits, seeds, and if so when did you introduce them after surgery. Many thanks.

Happy 1 month anniversay!
sherrypep replied to hameed's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats! I am one month out also. I was 164.5 after 16 months with a band and weighed in at 148.5 at my one month post op this morning. I havn't had many problems with food. I just stick with moist softer foods and chew really well. I love Greek Yogurt and it is only 80 calories with 14 grams of protein. Have you tried it?
