  1. How long has it been since your surgery? If you're months out I definitely reccomend taking protein bars with you, like Quest Bars or protein snacks like The Only Bean Crunchy Roasted Edamame beans. They're easy to carry, convenient, your protein intake will be taken care of!

    Little to no weightloss

Big hugs. Just remember, this isn't a sprint, it's a marathon. Ignore the scales for a bit. Do you log your food? Really evaluate what you're eating. Not enough protein? Too many carbs? Logging helps with that. Like others said do not starve yourself. You need good nutrition more than ever now.

    Personal Blog Suggestions

Hi Everyone, I am new(ish) to this process. Beginning Kaiser Options on 5/15. I've been trying to find good personal blogs to follow/read but havent had the best luck. It seems like every way I search I get 500000000 Surgeon or clinic sites/forums. Anyone have any great blogs, Vlogs, Insta suggestions that are motivational, informative and real?

    Stall?

Seems like you are close to goal so your loss might be slowing down. Try changing things around to see if that causes the stall to break: changing exercise, increasing water intake, reviewing protein intake, tracking religiously etc. I feel the restriction depending on the type of food I eat, so you may want to see what you are eating, but like Catwoman7 said, some days I can have 1 egg, another I can have 2 so it all depends.

How Can I Drink More Water??

How many are you getting in now? It took me 2-3 months to steadily hit that 64oz minimum. I was told by my team the 1st month to get at least 48oz since my body needed that at a minimum to function, but after month 2 I was told to prioritize fluids over protein since I could always supplement with a shake. You can start drinking 2oz every 15min and see how it goes, and always track it. I drink a cup of water when I wake up and before my cup of coffee (with protein shake), then when I exercise about 45 minutes I drink 24 to 32oz during the session, that puts me at over half my daily intake which now I aim for 80oz min. I have a water bottle next to my bed, one in the bathroom and I always carry a 32oz bottle with me out and around the house. Also try different temperatures, I was always a room temperature person, but after the surgery I prefer cool water so I drop some ice cubes to make it cool but not cold. I also keep water flavor packets in my office, in case I'm tired of the water by mid afternoon. It does get easier once you are able to drink more often, I can have 3 sips back to back and that helps tremendously.
  7. I mix cottage cheese in with my protein shakes and chair seeds and that helps me hit my protein goal a lot easier

    Any April Surgery Dates?

Struggling with shakes as well. Have started eating the Icelandic yogurt from Trader Joe’s - 18g per serving. Has anyone tried the Ohana protein shots? I see them advertised here, and am wondering if they’re worth trying to help hit the protein goal.

    Any April Surgery Dates?

Oh I’m off and on struggling with protein and water goals. I am also not hungry but I know I have to get in the protein. I’m on the entry of stage 3 (can add other things in after a full month from surgery). So without actual meat things, it’s a circle of shakes, eggs, cheeses and yogurt and I’m over it. I mixed up the protein shakes because I was also sick of chocolate. I have the Core Power in Vanilla and Strawberry Banana to add variety. Also just got Protein 2 O protein water to break up the creamy stuff. It’s hard getting in 60grams at this point.
  10. +1 about the protein issues. I had my surgery a month ago and now I am on to normal foods. But my nutritionist wants me to maintain a high protein diet. I don't eat a lot of meat, so it's really difficult.

    Any April Surgery Dates?

Struggling... I am just done with the gross shakes. I have had so many in the last few weeks... I think I don't like chocolate anymore (at least the fake chocolate). So every day, from the moment I wake up until I go to bed, it's a hunt for protein. But to be honest, I'm just not hungry, but I know I need to get in protein, and I am failing at that. I had to go back and get fluids twice... Plus, I've had a sinus infection back to back over the last two weeks. If anything could happen, it has. My incisions are healing nicely, and my pouch feels fine... it's all the other stuff

    Hero Bread Post Bypass

FYI...Hero Bread is the latest addition to Subway’s bread line. Hero Bread has no added sugar, no net carbs, and 45 calories per slice. Each serving contains 26 grams of fiber, as well as 12 grams of protein. It is exciting. I can't imagine going the rest of my life and never eating a sandwich or wrap ever again. I plan to try it in the future. But man it's pricey!

    Little to no weightloss

I understand your frustration. When I was about one week post op, I hit my first stall. ONE WEEK! I only had water, some broth and that’s it. So why the heck wasn’t I losing weight?? To make matters worse, my hubby, who ate take out twice that week, lost three pounds. WHAT!? I was totally insulted… and I started to think it was my body again. Always trying to keep me fat. Years of struggle and here I am eating 400 cals a day and not losing anything?? One week later, a small movement. But every time I changed food stages, another stall. That was four stalls in six weeks. Very frustrating. I knew my BMR was 1400, so staying around 600-800 calories with high protein and low carb would HAVE to work. It’s not the program as much as it is the science. a couple things I’ve noticed… 1. If I’m sick or have an allergy episode, I will stall or even gain 2. if I drink Gatorade or artificial sweeteners of any kind, I will stall 3. if I don’t have regular daily bowel movements, I will stall. This one is so hard to deal with. 4. If I don’t get enough sleep, I will stall. 5. When I started eating higher protein than recommended (90 recommended, I have 110), I will lose. Even if the carbs go up slightly. 6. If I eat too many processed foods in a day, like protein bars, drinks or snacks, I will stall. 7. If I don’t get enough pure water, I will stall. You might have some sensitivities like these or others…. Really examen what you’re taking in, not just the calories and fat. It’s a puzzle you gotta figure out for yourself. It’s hard work. But I believe you can do it. Just vent and get back in there! 😃

    Little to no weightloss

Stop. You're making yourself crazy. Get off the scale. You can't eat 800 calories a day and not lose weight, eventually. It'll happen. Your body is still healing from a very traumatic surgery. You're going to have swelling and water retention for months. This is a normal and expected part of the process. If you're doing what you're supposed to be doing, then you have nothing to worry about. You'll get there. It takes time for our metabolism to get the message. Depriving your healing tissues of the protein they need in order to heal, is not something that I would suggest. You could cause yourself more harm than good.

    Urea Level is High

Hey Fedup, How'd you go when reviewing your levels/have you been tested again? I too just recieved results and my Urea is high, my egfr is lower than pre-op now too but not less that 60. Creatinine was normal but higher than pre-op and on high side of normal. TProtein and Albulmin are just on the lower side of normal. GP said it may be dehydration as I also (since blood test) have had diarrhoea BUT maybe the diarrhoea is a result rather than the cause considering the order of them occurring? I've had a sore back today now too. I am at weightloss goal and have 60-80g protein daily as recommended but looking up on how to resolve the kidney function, the readings recommend limiting protein intake. Do I just increase water intake or should I limit my proteins?

    Length of liquid diet Post-op

I'm having a hard time too! My Sleeve surgery was on 04/18 so I just started week 3. According to my surgeons plan, I'm still on a full liquid diet. Next week, week 4, I can throw in scrambled eggs, low or non fat cottage cheese, 2% string cheese, low fat cheese slices, and add fruit to blended protein shakes. On week 5 I can add soft cooked vegetables, canned chicken or tuna - fork smashed, refried beans, bananas, and canned fruit - fork smashed. Week 6 I move to solid food as tolerated. Last week at my 1 week follow up I told my Dr that I was very surprised at how hungry I am all the time and that I'm able to get all the protein and liquids down with no problems. I think he kind of thought I was under the impression that I got a bad sleeve. Mostly because he said: "I don't want you to think you didn't get a good sleeve..." hahaha! I'm just trying not to compare myself to others. It's hard. I keep reading about how everyone is not hungry anymore and I get a bit jealous. Hahahaha! I'll survive.... but I can't wait for some scrambled eggs!

    Length of liquid diet Post-op

I was on some form of a restricted diet for the first 3 months: clear liquids for a week, full liquids for 3 weeks, purees for 3 weeks and I think 6 weeks on soft foods. By the time I got to the point my diet was no longer restricted I was CRAVING raw vegetables something awful, and that's not really something that has let up (to a point where my dietitian had to gently chastise me for eating so much salad because it wasn't leaving enough room for protein!) I'm not going to suggest you go on your own and contradict your team's recommendations, but you may consider talking to them if you are tolerating things well if they would be open to you potentially accelerating your schedule. If you're having trouble, I would stick with the schedule.
  18. Hi, I had a sleeve on 4/25. Still on protein shake and clear liquid diet. I haven’t lost any weight in the last 3 days. Doing everything right, walking 30 min, having my protein shakes. Still working on getting my liquids to at least 64 oz. Having around 45-50 oz a day. Scale is not moving! Any suggestions?
  19. I am so fed up. I am 10 weeks post op. I didn’t lose any weight in the first 3 weeks. Very odd as it was liquid only. Between weeks 4-7 I lost just over a stone. Since week 7, and I am now nearly 11 weeks post op, I haven’t even lost 1lb. I am not drinking calories, I am sticking to the NHS guidelines and my dietician. No slider foods. High protein, low fat and hitting my fluid goals each day. Literally feel like my last draw is gone. I keep reading to trust to the process and I’ve carried on but weeks of no weightloss has no meant that I have started a water only diet, fasting as it seems my body will not lose weight if I put any food in my body. I have never felt so depressed or let down. I could understand if I was eating he wrong things, or eating too much, too little. Wondering if it’s hormonal and that’s the reason I’ve struggled for years with weightloss and gaining Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  20. Thank you for the insight! Hero brand specifically caters to it being a protein/fiber ‘bread’ with no carbs - so in theory it would contain more vital nutrients (for a wls patient) in one tortilla wrap than in an entire head of cauliflower and doesn’t contain sugar like cauliflower. I think the intrigue of that fact actually lures me! I know it’s processed so that’s where I get nervous. To your point, I have noticed the ‘heaviness’ of foods affects me. Things that are more dense seem to make me nauseated and things that are light like sautéed veggies and lean proteins sit really well with me! I knew going into this I’d have to give up a lot and so far the only thing I miss is bread/tortillas/pastas. But I’d rather have health than have those things. So seeing a ‘bread’ with protein and no carbs makes me very excited. One day I’ll be able to try it, but at only three weeks in, still letting my little tummy heal. PS. Saw your birthday is July 21 - I’m July 20!!!!

    Hero Bread Post Bypass

Check with your dietician & medical team. Plans differ & it’s always best to follow your plan. If your plan says no bread it means no bread & that includes low carb, low calorie or high protein versions. The issue with bread, bread alternatives, rice & pasta is that they swell in your tummy & take up valuable room which should be filled by the protein you need to eat. Remember all because you may not be allowed now while you are losing doesn’t mean you won’t in the future. Of course some are allowed to eat bread, etc. but what sort, how much & when you can is where differences occur. If you are allowed remember eat your protein first, then any vegetables you are able & very last any carbs you are allowed & only if you still need to eat. (Often I could only eat my protein & nothing else.) And of course the other consideration is if you can physically eat them. I’m almost 4 years out & I still can’t eat breads, pasta, rice. They just sit too heavily in my tummy & limit the amount of more nutritionally food I need to eat. Lots of alternatives like cauliflower rice, cauliflower crust for pizza, zucchini noodles, etc. available. PS - The type of surgery doesn’t really influence your post eating surgical plan.

    Any April Surgery Dates?

Same! First 1-2 days was rough. 3rd day I felt a bit better. The gas pain was terrible though. But I am struggling to get all my protein intake in. How's that going for you?
  23. I understand the feeling. I’m drinking the protein and water. And it’s still really loud, but I’m not hungry. It’s a little embarrassing. Need to find out how to stop it.

I love the Grenad oreo protein bar. Tastes so sweet and is good protein source too. I bring a bag of Quest nacho or ranch chip too

    Are plastics worth it?

Yes, yes, yes to being worth it!!! Plastics changed my life! Best thing I did for myself, besides the WLS!!! As for price? Yes, $30K for tummy and breasts is way too much in my opinion! I would recommend joining the Facebook Groups, there's a bunch of them, check out No BS Tummy tucks and Breast Mob. Lots of before and after photos, surgeon info, prices etc. If you are willing to travel, Miami is the place to go for a MMO! I would go private practice though, not one of the clinics, as the clinics tend to overbook, and then change your date at the last minute, which is a problem when you are traveling for surgery. I was initially scheduled at a clinic in Miami (for $11,500), but my preferred surgeon left the clinic, and I didn't want want to go with a different surgeon at that particular clinic. So I ended up switching to a private practice surgeon on the other coast (Ft Myers), and ended up paying $14,000. To me, it was worth the extra $$ for the private practice experience, etc. There are lots of private practice options right in Miami though. You can bring a companion with you, and stay in a hotel, or if you want to travel solo, there are recovery houses available that provide after care until you are ready to fly back home. Or of course, just stay local, but shop around a little bit more until you find the right fit and right price! Best of luck in whatever you decide!!
