Over 60 and having the sleeve

Ginny C I am 63 and had a band(that had gone bad) to sleeve revision 3 weeks ago. It was hard on me for the first few days. I stayed overnight at the hospital and my husband drove me 150 miles home. I had a migrane for the first few days at home. I was wishing I had never had it done. But after a few days I felt fine and was very happy I had it done! I have lost 23 lbs in the 3 wks since my surgery. The best thing that happened to me is I found this forum. I am on a pureed diet til next week when i go on a soft diet for 2 weeks. I cant wait. I walk a mile on my treadmill every morning. I still get weak at times, but they are getting less and less. good luck with your surgery! Jeri
  2. Greetings Everyone! Has anyone heard of a Kaiser patient getting a revision from Band to Sleeve? I got my band at Richmond (boo-hiss) and transferred my care to So SF. They're much much better, but I was pretty much told to make an appointment with a mortuary if I had a revision. I'd appreciate any news. Thanks
  3. i'm only 2 days out, but i find that i have to force myself to drink. did anyone else have discomfort while they drank Water / protien drinks / or other stuff? the feeling doesn't last long - maybe 10 seconds or so. i'm a revision patient (from band) and i dont remember having this feeling after i had the band. just curious if others had the same feelings right after surgery and how long it lasted. i hope it doesn't last long because i'm not getting all my protien / fluids in yet. i'm maybe just getting half.
  4. I can give you the reason why I fought to have VSG instead of RNY for my revision. 1) regain stats for RNY are just scary 2) # of RNY patients seeking revisions to DS or ERNY because the malabsorption of calories/fat only lasts 2 years, BUT, the malabsorption of nutrients and Vitamins last a lifetime. Not really a fair trade off in my opinion 3) I didn't want to self punish myself if I wanted a cookie. I mean come on that's pretty evil to induce dumping syndrome. Skinny bitches have a cookie or two here and there. Plus, dumping only occurs in 30% of RNY patients, no guarantee it'd keep me out of the cookie jar. 4) I didn't want a blind stomach that can still develop cancer and ulcers yet is difficult to access for scopes, and nearly impossible to diagnose because of the complicated staple line. 5) The pouch caused by the RNY and band are pretty much the same. My body hated the pouch with my band. I knew it would be the same with RNY. It's not natural, I love having a normal, fully functioning tummy. NO pouch, NO stoma with VSG. 6) No Vitamin, nutrient deficiencies with VSG caused by malabsorption. 7) Long term complications with RNY were too numerous for me to even consider a malabsorptive procedure 8) Gastrectomies have been performed for decades upon decades for stomach cancer and ulcerative conditions. Out of all of my research, I found gastrectomy patients living very normal, full lives with partial or complete gastrectomies. Some people have their entire stomach remove and are able to live fairly normal lives. Of course, there are dietary changes and different requirements, but overall, their lives were close to normal. 9) I know several RNY patients in real life, personal close friends, that struggle with regain, Iron infusions weekly for 8 weeks then off for a month, and back on for 2, bowel obstructions, pouch dilation, and other issues related to RNY. 10) The weight loss stats with VSG are neck and neck with VSG and RNY. I knew restriction would be enough for me. Portion control and constant restriction is what I needed. RNY is a great surgery for some people, but for me, it was not a match. For me, VSG was the only option. If I could not have had VSG, my band would have been removed, and I would have stayed fat.
  5. I had my surgeon appointment yesterday and he has been doing sleeves for a little over a year and has done 14. Just wondering how many others had done? Anxious to hear if anyone was the first for those of you farther out in the journey. Also, have they had any deaths? If so, did that discourage you or did you look for a different surgeon? My surgeon has had one death with a sleeve and it was a modified sleeve with several co-morbities and an extensive revision, open surgery.
  6. Nope, I'm nothing special. The band interferes with equipment I wear at work - plain and simple. They know bypass works for everyone who gets it. End of story. I wanted the sleeve originally because of my concerns regarding having a foreign object in my body, but Richmond told me they don't do the surgery (a lie obviously). I really just need to hear from someone - anyone - out there who has had the revision surgery through norcal kaiser
  7. I also had the band in 2008 and had revision surgery a month ago. I hated the band. I threw up blocked food at nearly every meal, and I was hungry all the time with the band. I chose food that would stay down, which was usually unhealthy food that I wouldn't have normally chosen just so I wouldn't be hungry anymore. There were so many things that I couldn't eat with the band -- healthy foods, high Fiber foods. I looked at my band as surgically induced bulimia. I did lose some weight with it but just about 10% of the weight that I needed to lose, and it eventually came back. I know that there are some people that have been successful with the band, especially people who normally eat large portions, but I wasn't one of them. Like others have said, I am only sorry that I didn't do the revision surgery sooner. Edited to add: I have the sleeve now, and I have not thrown up once since the surgery. I can eat healthy foods now, and the weight is coming off.
  8. Are your weight gains the fault of the band or your fault for not following the program? The band has been successful for some and there are people out there who swear by them (as opposed to swearing AT them). Fix whatever is broken so, if it's the band's fault, then go for the revision. If your eating habits are the problem, then why undergo surgery? Even with the VSG, you have to make it work... it won't do it all by itself. Best of luck on whatever you decide.

Bindi, I hate to hear that but better safe than sorry when it comes to leaks! I have had the band since 2003 and am sceduled Nov 7 for revision to the sleeve. I had a scope a few weeks ago and my Dr thinks that the outside of my stomach is ok based on what he could see, but it is always a possibility that you have to wait. Best of wishes to a fellow friend "falling off the bandwagon"!
  10. What exactly is revision surgery ? Thanks for your help.
  11. Oh, do me, do me. I was just commenting on a fb sleeve forum the other day at how dissapointed I was only losing 22 lbs in 4 mths. Someone then told me I had lost 50% of my excess weight in 4 mths (22 lbs to goal - started lower at 174 - was a band revision). Here's my stats (I'd do it myself but I eeked out a C in college algebra and barely passed college stats): SW: 248 CW: 152 GW: 130

    Any sleepers from Ga?

She had lap band with him around 5 years ago. She had complications and had to have it out in December. I think she's going to have a revision and get the sleeve. I hope so. She lost a lot of weight but she didn't follow the rules.
  13. Had band since 11/08. Fluid in, fluid out, little loss. Had 2 ugi with little dialation 3 years ago. Decided to get it out this year. Saw a different physician due to insurance. Had another ugi. Didn't see anything wrong but lower abdominal erosions due to H. pylori. Scheduled for lap removal of band and revision to rny 10/22. Start preop diet monday. Preop testing 10/17.
  14. Hi All, I am knew to this site. Back in 2001 i had gastric bypass. I lost 140 lbs but thru the years i slowly gain the weight back. Now 13 years later I am back up to my original pre surgery weight. I am know looking into have a WLS revision. I have gone for my first visit with Dr. Nusbaum. He as well as his staff were amazing. He has given me two options to consider before he does my EGD to see what he is working with. So my two choices are Lap Band or Plication. I heard many things about Lap Band. My question is has anyone had a Plication surgery? How are you feeling post surgery. What are the weight loss outcomes compared to doing the Lap Band? Trying to get informed before I sit down with my doctor again. I have my EGD on January 14, 2015

Calling all vets- where are you

2 months shy of 2 years. Happy with my weight loss but struggling with GERD and may need a revision. Currently undergoing testing.
  17. Did you have your band to sleeve revision done all at one time or two separate surgerys?
  18. Ballermom

    Sleeve restriction

I m not feeling my restriction either. I got to 163 then now up to 180 in short time. Thinking about revision. Tried cutting cal etc. had lot of stress Sick parent etc.
  19. I just got the approval for my revision and I'm set for August 1st. I have a thread posted here where I'm going to document my whole story and experience. I have bad reflux, a stricture that won't heal and keeps getting more swollen and inflamed, and my esophagus is eroding at the site of the stricture. They told me if I don't revise soon I'm looking at Barret's which will eventually lead to esophageal cancer. My insurance company okay'd the surgery right away because my doctor is extremely worried about the future health of my esophagus. Oh, and the fact that I haven't been able to eat sold food since my sleeve in 2012. I'm kind of a rare case I guess but I'm Iron, Vitamin D and Protein deficient and I can't stay hydrated enough to keep from having bad kidney infections. Hopefully the surgery will go well for me and finally allow the stricture to heal, I can't wait to eat real food again! Keep us updated, I'm hoping your insurance company will approve your surgery and I definitely know how reflux feels. Good luck!!
  20. How soon did you have these issues after your surgery? I started having these issues about 2 weeks after my sleeve surgery which was 2 years ago. I did get a phone call from the surgery cordinater last week. He said my case was discussed at a meeting with my doctor & she was going to contact the insurance company to discuss my case! So I am hoping that I will be able to have it done. How are you feeling after your revision? Please keep me updated on your progress!
  21. It has been a long time since I last posted. It is now 2017 & Im still suffering from reflux. Just had an EGD which shows esophagitis & reflux issues. I recently retired & now am only covered by Champ va insurance. My doctor is recommending surgery again & her office just called & said my insurance approved it. I am scheduled 7/11. I am still worried that once I have this done Champ va will try not to pay it since I didn't go through the weight loss protocol back in 2012 when I went to Mexico. I need the revision for reflux, not weight loss. I am so tired of everything I eat coming back up, also I'm not able to digest salad, veggies or fruit. Also lactose intolerant since my sleeve. I really hope this works.. I have kept my weight off, I'm 125lbs..
  22. And now you are assuming because I'm male I don't have emotions? That I wasn't scared as hell going into things? that I didn't have some crazy depression because the rest of my family can eat all the foods I wish I could? That's I'm not effected by hunger? Seriously. The emotions you speak of... are not specific to one sex. I don't know of anyone that was given a pre-op diet that was informed as to how hard it would be... They didn't tell us before my lap-band back in 2011... they didn't tell use this time around when I was revised from Band to Bypass. I'm going bow out of this... I provided you with sound advice. It's up to you want you want to do with it. Good luck.

    July Surgeries??

July 13th surgery. I am having a revision from sleeve to bypass for GERD. I don't have to do a two week diet just a 3 day liquid one. I have my pre op visit tomorrow
  24. Do I understand this correctly? So this would be your second revision? I’m 3 weeks out from revision bypass surgery 4/18/21 so far so good so much easier then sleeve
  25. I was banded in 2006 but never maintained a weight loss. My band was defective with a hole in it. Unfortunately, I changed jobs and the new insurance would not cover the revision to a new band. So I've had this band in with a little restriction, but no fill. I've lost maybe 10 that stayed off and lost the same 40 pounds over and over via WW, exercise etc. I'm getting the sleeve on Friday, so I can't speak about success yet. I'm hoping this will do it, but I'm just happy to get this band out of my body
