Self pay- insurance doesn’t cover WLS
liveaboard15 replied to Changenprogress's topic in Insurance & Financing
That is what i was thinking too. Probably going to have to choose the sleeve or bypass if they want insurance to cover. -
Self pay- insurance doesn’t cover WLS
catwoman7 replied to Changenprogress's topic in Insurance & Financing
it might not cover the DS. A lot of insurance policies that DO cover WLS will only cover sleeve and bypass (some will cover DS - but not all). -
Nausea and fatigue after eating
catwoman7 replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
if this is happening right after eating, another strong possibility is a stricture. They happen to about 5% of gastric bypass patients, and you're in the right window of time for it (they almost always occur within 1-3 months post-op. They're very rare after that point). I had two of them - one at four weeks out and the other at around eight weeks out. They're an easy "fix". Regardless, let your clinic know what's going on. What you're experiencing is not normal. -
Vasovagal Syncope ( Fainting ) episode
PhantumBelly replied to catfish87's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Could really be a number of things for many of you here. I use an at home monitor and I was having low blood pressure 88/58 etc. .. For those who speculate orthostatic hypertension diagnosis can be confirmed with the tilt table test mentioned by a poster in this thread it could also be,for those with bypass, reactive hypoglycemia (occurs like 3 hours after eating something substantionally Carby) which u could use a cheap glucometer or borrow a friends during an episode to test if your blood sugar is low. For those who want a diagnosis after having low blood sugar it can be confirmed with lab test gtt (glucose tolerance test) extended 4 hours -
Hey! I had my bypass Feb 14 this year. It's been pretty smooth sailing honestly up until the last week. Everytime I eat, about 15 minutes later I get extremely nauseous and even start retching. I threw up the other day actually after eating a protein yogurt but nothing came out. Just some red stuff from a pill I took. I'm not eating sugar or high carb foods. It's all stuff I ate before no problem. Liquids seem to be fine but I've had things like eggs, avocado, protein yogurt, cheese and cooked vegetables and wow do I feel like I need to throw up after. I eat slow and stick to small portions too. And then every now and then after eating I get incredibly fatigued and feel like I need to go to sleep. I've never had issues with insulin/pre diabetes or diabetes and feel like that's unlikely since I've been in weight loss mode and barely eating. It's getting difficult to reach my protein goal because I get so sick all of a sudden after eating. I really don't want to fall behind on things. Wondering if this is a stricture or normal? Am I becoming intolerant to certain foods or is the restriction just going strong? Feels so all of a sudden. Is there something I can do for a couple days to "reset" like only liquids or something? I'm scheduled for a gastric bypass and hiatal hernia repair on May 16th. I'm glad I joined this forum as it's given me so much insight and knowledge of what to expect and how to deal with it, it's such a releife to read other people's experiences. You know you're let alone! I dont believe any research can give you this much information that is 100% accurate then from the people who have actually experienced it. Good luck to all who are waiting for their surgery best wishes🙏🙏🙏

HELP - Finding a plan that will cover WLS in Texas
liveaboard15 replied to MrsL12's topic in Insurance & Financing
Unfortunately you will not find a plan that will cover it in Texas thru the affordable care act (obama care) I have done lots of research on this specifically because here in Florida its also excluded... These are the states where its covered. Your option would be to move to one of these states temporarily, Establish residency, get healthcare, get your surgery and leave. If you notice most southern states are excluded because people in southern states tend to be overweight when compared to northern states. (according to multiple articles i read about bariatric surgery. This is my backup if i end up needing a revision is to move. South Dakota seems to be the easiest from the research i did. -
Hello everyone! My Bypass surgery was scheduled FINALLY! May 16 2022. Anyone else in may? Now I’m excited and nervous!

Gastric bypass and hiatal hernia repair 27th april
Merill replied to Merill's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Oh my 😕 4 days is very limited but chin-up and just pray that all goes well and there's no complications. My surgery is on the 16th of May, I too will be getting a hiatal hernia repair and gastric bypass, I've had my hernia for years. Can't wait to get it repaired finally! But I think you should be ok with 4 days of recovery as long as there's no other complications just make sure that you do light core exercises and lots of walking prior to surgery, that will speed up your recovery (as I heard from people who have had it) And good luck with your surgery hope all goes well for you Sparkly🙏👍 -
How to respond when people comment on your appearance after surgery?
Tomo replied to jfuss's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I told some people about my first surgery. I learned quickly that in the future to keep to myself and talk in forums like this where people are supportive. I didn't tell anyone but my husband about my revision and things are easier to stay on track without all the background noise. When asked what am I doing, I tell them about my logging, counting calories, getting enough liquid and protein, my exercise (or lack thereof) and relay all the hints that I've learned that has helped me stay on track or get back on track... Etc. I do NOT mention surgery due to people's prejudices and/or intense nagging by family members. So, in essence, I lie by omission. -
Revision without a high enough bmi now
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to Nanajoy's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm in the process of revision. My band was removed one year ago. I'm about to have bypass surgery very soon. I can tell you that medicare covers revision and it's based upon medical necessity, and they review each case individually. I had GERD. So before removing my band, my surgeon did a couple of tests. An EGD and also a special fluoroscopy test that looks for dysmotility of the esophagus and also reflux/GERD. You basically eat a marshmallow and then a piece of bagel (if neccessary) on fluoroscopy while they tilt the table that you're secured on to certain degrees. It's almost like swallowing food at an angle. It's really strange. I didn't even get to the bagel before the marshmallow refluxed upwards and outward. The test reports are sent to the insurance company to establish medical necessity for removal. So because Lap Band failed me, I can get revision. So if you're having issues with your band, I would say you will be approved very easily. When you have issues with the band, those issues override BMI. Because you're not asking for revision so much for weight loss, but primarily due to the intolerance or issues the band has created. I wish you well on your journey to revision! -
Yes there is a whole forum for revision surgeries and sleeve to bypass seems to be mentioned on here quite often because of GERD. It’s a pretty common procedure.

Revision without a high enough bmi now
liveaboard15 replied to Nanajoy's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My insurance didnt cover anything but i went ahead and asked them if i developed severe GERD if they could cover a bypass to cure it, They flat out told me no. LMAO i was like come on... haha. -
Short term post op some people experience mood swings and depression and/ or anxiety due to the hormones being out of whack from major surgery and the accelerated weight loss. But long term I think if people have issues it’s more because of meds not working as well. My dr suggested sleeve over bypass because of the medicine absorption issue that is possible with bypass but far less common with sleeve. I just kept reminding myself that LESS absorption did not mean NO absorption so maybe I would have to take a higher milligram of certain meds to get the right amount to absorb but they should still work. Or maybe I would have to try another medication but there are so many out there that something should work. There are some meds such as extended release meds that tend to cause The most issues for people. Some people are fine with them but others have to take the immediate release version twice a day. So my takeaway was Basically as long as you work closely with your doctor they should be able to make adjustments to your medication to find something that can work for you. I had one medication that you have to eat 350 calories at the time you take it so I had to switch to another Medication but other than that I have not had any issues with medications post sleeve. I have bipolar disorder and anxiety disorder and I totally get what you are saying. I was a little bit nervous the whole time but I just kept reminding myself that I went with the surgery the dr suggested and I am very compliant with my meds and responsible to go to the doctor and ask for help if I need it and there are so many meds out there that IF I had issues they would only be temporary.

Hi there totally new here and just looking for peoples experience, I am post op 10 days post gastric bypass, just wondering if I am eating too much or too little, just scared I am messing thing up ; so currently I am eating around 4- 5 yoghurts a day and around 2-3 cups of coffee with almond milk and 2 soups a day. All the yogurts are low sugar and low fat ie when I look at the calories for everything except my soups I get around 600-700 calories a day this is without counting the soups as they are home made with carrots, chicken etc. Pre surgery I was 131 kg - 288.8 pounds , and day of surgery I was 124 kg - 273.4 pounds and now I am 117 kg - 257.9 pounds (10 days post op). (I am 184 cm height - 6.03 feet) I have not eaten any additional protein as I getting that with the soups , and will call my dietician for follow up to make sure I am doing things right, and also I feel hungry a lot however I think its just because I am dead bored with the food, not sure if this is normal or not. Looking forward to hear other peoples experience. Many thanks

Revision without a high enough bmi now
ShoppGirl replied to Nanajoy's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I would just go see the surgeon and see what They say. For revision if it’s medically necessary your BMI shouldn’t matter. For instance if you haD sleeve and develop untreatable GERD they wouldn’t care what your BMI was to revise to bypass. I am not sure but band intolerance may make it medically necessary. -
Revision without a high enough bmi now
Nanajoy posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I’ve had a lap band for 11 yrs. I’ve begun to have problems ( band intolerance) and also have gained 30 of 100 pounds back. I’m not considered obese anymore but I am wanting the band out and feel that I need the sleeve so that I don’t gain it all back. I’m disabled and have Medicare. Does anyone have experience with this. Insurances seem to want you to gain it all back ( to have a higher bmi again ) before they will cover. They covered the band. Wouldn’t it make sense to cover the revision. -
Went on vacation for a week, first time since surgery - and I LOST weight!
fourmonthspreop replied to Tufflaw's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Awesome, congrats! That's always a good feeling. I'm almost 3 months out from gastric bypass and have been going on trips. I honestly like it because its a break from the scale obsession and I always lose weight because I'm more active anyway while traveling. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app -

Gastric bypass and hiatal hernia repair 27th april
sparkly_keeks replied to Merill's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am having an endoscopy the day before my surgery and I am pretty sure I have a hiatal hernia as I have all the signs. They will repair the hernia at the same time they do the bypass. Not looking forward to the recovery from that, since I have to fly home 4 days after the surgery.
