sharonwg replied to Shey Ronix's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi there - I had a gastric band for 16 years; i went from 280lbs to 91lbs (im very short!). I had it removed last year as it had slipped and im having a bypass in a few weeks. Why not try eating a meal / snack high in protein in the evening. It will make you feel fuller for a longer period of time. Good luck with it xx -

Make sure you have LOTS of different options for protein. By day 3, I couldn't stomach drinking the protein shakes anymore and felt like I was going to vomit. I found that I liked fruity protein vs. creamy. But that's just me. Good luck! -
It seems the Bariatric Pal site has some good snack options. Also been curious about Flock chicken crisps though I'd be concerned about the fat content. Those Adkins candies or Russel stover candies seem like a somewhat decent substitute with extreme moderation if you want something sweet. I'm with everyone else who says talk to your nutritionist to see what they come up with. My nutritionist has been sharing little tricks and tidbits about meals and she probably knows a few good tips about movie snacking too. If all else fails - low fat cheese sticks, nuts, small roll ups of meat and cheese, protein snack packs (I know Kroger has them, not sure of any other place). Oh, how are you about protein water? You can probably use that instead of soda. Or get a bottled water and a sugar free flavor package as a treat.

That is awesome. I have bought lots of different kinds and when I start my pre op diet on Wed, I will start trying them. I haven’t found many shakes that I like, but the premier clear is good. I haven’t tried the cran grape Protein shot but have some, guess it is time to give them a try. Thanks! -
Oh man, my tastes change daily. I feel like a picky toddler. Bariatric Pal makes a cran- grape protein shot that I'm quite fond of.

Yeah, talk to your team. In the meantime, try to get all your fluids in, and protein shakes count as liquids for you right now. Best of luck! -

I got into trouble with an apple pectin fiber pill, before having surgery. It caused my blood sugars to drop. I felt full but also didn’t have room for protein to even myself out. I was pre-diabetic and it felt like dumping now feels like, sweating, shakes, foggy mind, sudden severe tiredness. I would not recommend it for regular stomachs much less a band or WLS. Honestly, surgery has been the only thing to take the hard edge off of hunger for me. The downside is that food flavors are much less vibrant (for me, I can’t speak for others). I made the choice to eat to live instead of live to eat. Anything is better than an apple pectin fiber pill! Please don’t hurt yourself! -

Recovery is going well for me from my surgery on the 2nd. Not in too much pain anymore and moving around better! Pretty much meeting my protein goal daily by adding unflavored protein powder to my water, broth, pudding, etc. Sipping all throughout the day and staying hydrated! I’m excited to be 37 pounds down from my heaviest weight as of this morning! I can’t stress how important it is to walk walk walk. Does not have to be fast! But get yourself moving!! It helps with the pain and soreness and keeps blood clots away!! Of course, don’t overdo it! But every step helps!!! -

Don't forget a glass of milk twice a day and a greek yogurt or two and some good cheese will get you to 60 grams of protein. In the Netherlands the norm for breakfast is eggs, ham, yogurt and peanut butter with toast. Sent from my Lenovo TB-J606F using BariatricPal mobile app -

Hair Loss (Tips & Advice please)

My hair loss happened around month 3 & it was insane BUT I kept up with my vitamins & protein & it stopped after about a month after. I did not need any special hair suppliments or anything like that. Being properly nourished took care of that issue for me. I'm 8 months out & haven't felt with any abnormal hair loss since -
Weight stall 7 days PO
mcipanda replied to bellaarrazcaeta's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The same thing happened to me. It was so frustrating. Just remember… you had major surgery, your body is healing and trying to balance everything for homeostasis, and you’re still in the process of rebuilding energy stores around your liver. My stall broke a couple days into week 2 and came back a week later 😭 lol it felt like I couldn’t win, but here I am 24lbs lost and still going with mini stalls every week for a few days or so. Eventually, they break. Remember the science…if you’re taking in less than you burn while resting, you will lose weight. Just remember to get all your protein and water right now. Be easy on yourself! -

Hi there, hair loss can be really scary, especially when you’re already in a fragile state after surgery. Before surgery, I talked to my hairstylist and doctor to understand what was coming and how to deal with it. Here are some of the tips they gave me: 1. Get all of your protein 2. Take your multivitamins religiously 3. Keep your scalp clean and healthy 4. Don’t use harsh shampoos. Use fragrance free, low lather, low chemical shampoos 5. Wear your hair loose. Avoid tight pony tails or braids etc 6. Keep your hair out of the sun to avoid UV damage 7. Use a wide tooth comb to brush your hair, and be gentle. Use natural bristles if using a brush 8. Reduce your overall stress (meditation, relaxation techniques, etc can help). Stress itself is one of the biggest contributors 9. if your hair seems brittle, try coconut oil or olive oil. Just be careful not to over wash afterward (oily hair can perturb some) 10. accelerate new growth with vitamins, biotin, etc. they won’t prevent loss but they can help regrowth I hope some of this was helpful. Good luck to you and remember it’s only temporary! 🍀☺️ -

Encouraged to read these replies- I am traveling to Europe for the entire month of June, so am a bit worried about access to some of the high protein items I currently use to up my protein- im still drinking one shake a day to get my protein in— and am still hovering about 60gP a day. Just can’t eat enough to get there without the shake yet. I feel like London and Paris (not sure why I think that?) will have some options, but am concerned about Amsterdam/Cologne/all of Italy— I haven’t found a powdered shake mix I like yet. Im just at 8 weeks today, and when I leave i will be at 12 weeks. Ive tried a few bars, but ugh. Im not thinking i will starve by any means, but want to be sure i am getting my protein in for sure. Luckily meat/eggs/cheese have been my friend. -

ditto on three months (at least for me!). I didn't lose that much, though - no one else would have noticed. As Arabesque said, the most you can do is keep on top of your protein and supplements. -
Hair Loss (Tips & Advice please)
Arabesque replied to greekgoddess2468's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Three months is pretty common & that’s regardless of taking additional vitamins or supplements or not (save your money on those - they may only benefit your new growth). Of course for some it’s a little longer & others a little less. Just make sure you’re meeting or very close to your protein goals. Most of the accelerated hair loss is down your body’s reaction to the surgery, anaesthetic, hormonal fluctuations, stress, etc. Remember, your new hair hair is still growing at it’s usual rate. In a few months you may start to see the little fluffy bits of your new hair growth. Many of us cut our hair shorter. Shorter hair looks fuller & bouncier than long & it will take less time for your new hair growth to grow to reach your shorter length hair. You can always grow it again. If your hair loss is significant or noticeable try wigs or hair pieces or once the hair loss has slowed/stopped maybe look at hair extensions. -
Protein pudding pops are a great idea! I think it is great that your surgery is moved up. You're going to do great!

Welcome. My surgery was June 12th but they moved me up two days so now it's June 10th. That is such a great question. I'm excited to see what people say. I know one thing I have ready to go is my protein pudding recipes!!

I am in Greece at the moment and am surprised by how much protein focused items that are available in the supermarkets. I am having some delicious protein yogurts that are way better than at home. I don't do shakes but there are masses of them here too. Good quality brands too. I am sure that France will be the same. You will get good soups like consommé and, fish and stews. Omelettes, eggs cheese and milk are great go to foods. Enjoy yourself Sent from my Lenovo TB-J606F using BariatricPal mobile app -
I just want something that tastes good
LindsayT replied to LindsayT's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Thanks, everyone. It's been really hard getting in fluids and protein because the taste makes me nauseous. Plus, I'm not hungry AT ALL. That doesn't help either. I have set timers to remind me to drink. I'll keep plugging away and soon enough will graduate to the next faze. -
Reversing Regain (with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome)
mil_unloaded posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hey friends! I haven’t been around in a while…well, I’m going to be back now…as I feel like this community has been extremely helpful and supportive in the past, and I need to be here. I NEED it. So I had my surgery on December 30, 2020. I lost about 110 pounds from my highest (308 to 198, surgery day I was 289). I am currently 227.9, but I regained to 235.2. I know what to do, kinda. Log my food, eat my protein first, then veggies, then carby-carbs (what I call things like bread, potatoes, pasta, etc), move my body… However on Tuesday my hip subluxed (partial dislocation) while I was making a delivery for my job (I’m a home baker)… I kicked the curb with my foot and my momentum kept moving forward, I ended up on the ground with my knees scraped, and my left leg a total mess because of the Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (my right hip is also nagging now because I’m having to alter how I walk). So I feel like every time I get the groove going again, I hurt myself, and end up in more PT. I don’t know what I’m doing here exactly on this post… as I’m not really looking for advice—I know what to do… but more words of encouragement. Especially if you’ve regained and were able to reverse it. What started that regain to begin with was I dislocated my left hip entirely while running… and it popped back in on its own. It was excruciating. It made me super scared and nervous to get movement… This happened last summer (about a year ago!). I since got an official diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS, but I don’t like using that acronym here because when I searched for that I got lots of results for eating disorders, and that’s not the same thing). So… TLDR: If you regained and reversed it, can you offer your words of encouragement? Even if you haven’t exactly done this, I can take all of the kind words I can get right now. Best, Mil -

I just recommend that you try the foods before packing them, you never know how your new tummy will handle these things. Soups are always a good/semi safe go to. Pack your favorite protein powder and once you have been able to try a few snacks and know what you handle pack those too. You got this, it will just take a little more prep! -

Welcome to the other side! i’ll just reiterate what the others have said, it just takes time. As your body adjusts and heals things will get better. The human body is a remarkable thing. It will find its way and take you along with it, lol. Hang in there, keep drinking and get your protein in. Right now think of it as just being a machine who needs to do these things to heal. Taste will come later. -

Yeah, you are way early on. I don't think I thought about food until a few weeks later. Main thing to really work on right now is to stay hydrated. Unfortunately for many, taste buds are often skewed for awhile. The protein and everything else will fall into place as you heal. Feel better soon. Congrats on your surgery.
