  1. I had my sleeve done in 2014. I had an endoscopy done last week. Doctor says I have a hiatal hernia, esophagitis and gastritis and recommends the Roux-en-Y procedure to repair and revise. I’m scared for that procedure for some reason. Is it common for the doctor to recommend revision & repair over just repairing the hernia? He said that it could come back larger so that’s why they don’t recommend just the hernia repair. Anyone heard this? I’m trying to make the best decision. Thank you! :)

I get tired really easy.ready to feel good again. I was a revision from lapband, but really haven't felt good since surgery
  3. I understand what you're saying- and nothing anyone can say here is going to change the decision I've made to follow through with this. I KNOW I can't go back to where I was. I know this. It's just disheartening to hear from your surgeon that although you're removing half your stomach, you "might not lose a lot of weight". How is that even an option to NOT lose weight?! My fear is that since I'm a revision, I won't be successful as if I was a WLS virgin. I've gained weight. None of my clothes fit me. I'm back on BP meds. I KNOW what needs to be done, and I'm doing it on 2/19. I guess I'm just looking for those success stories from other successful banders who have gone on to be successful sleevers.
  4. Hi All, Several months ago my gastroenterologist of 5 years whom I trust suggested bariatric surgery. I've spent the time since abusing my access to scholarly journals through work and had initially settled on the sleeve. I've got an initial consult with the local sleeve expert surgeon 1 week from today. It's all he does and all he's ever done, I was so excited! I wanted the sleeve! However, while continuing my obsessive research last night, I decided to look specifically at "super-obese" patients with a BMI between 50 and 60 (my BMI is 54.1) and what I found was devastating - according to the NIH, among the super-obese, the average EWL for VSG is 40-50% whereas the DS has averages of 70-90% in the first year and early studies suggest a much higher success rate at 10-years post-op. Anyone here go through a similar experience? How have you handled it and what results have you had? I am a teacher and can't qualify for a loan large enough to cover DS without a few years of saving just to qualify, but don't want to waste time and money on VSG if I'm only going to have to save for several years and take out a second loan later for revision to DS with only 40% EWL in the meantime. I know DS is often done in two stages with VSG as stage 1, has anyone here done this? How does the cost and experience of doing it in two parts compare with doing the full DS in one fell swoop. Thanks for putting up with this rambling post. I'll be posting in the VSG forum as well, please forgive the cross-post.

    Minnesota Folks-Where are you?

Hey!!! I have been poking around this site for over a year now and it's amazing to me how quiet us Minnesotans are! I am in the Golden Valley/Crystal/New Hope Area. I would love to know if there is anybody out there near me. A by-weekly get together would be amazing. I haven't told anyone except my husband that I have a lapband so just having "partners in crime":cool2: would be really cool. I have really struggled. I lost a lot fast and then stopped losing over the summer. I was having absolutely no restriction....well a port revision and two fills later, I am FINALLY starting to understand about the sweet spot and how I am getting closer! So to those struggling it will get better! For a little bit there I was really questioning what I had done to myself. I had my surgery in St. Louis Park with Dr. Wetherill. I really like him. ~A
  6. LisaMarrie, I appreciate your reply. Have you had your revision surgery yet? I am taking all your words in and have been thinking about this all morning. I have had mental health therapy along with my eating disorder and have worked on a lot of this in the past. I just sometimes doubt myself. If I already know what to do, why do I ignore myself? I am super grateful I have a loving husband and a best friend that both support my decision. My family is on board too but it’s my own shame of having to do this again that is difficult. I guess that’s another subject I can touch on but after 17 years of living with bypass surgery, I almost have to starve myself to lose any weight at all. Is that ring true for you too? It’s so hard to lose weight now that my stomach is stretched and having to eat 800 to 900 calories to lose weight makes for a very cranky lady. I just want to feel like this time it’s forever. I feel ready and want these thoughts I’m having are normal and others might have felt the same way. Make sense?

    I just quit smoking

I smoked a pack a day for 20 years. I stopped when I went 911 in 2009. Before that I went to the ER every month due to lung problems, severe and ongoing bronchitis...etc. I switched to vaping shortly after my 911 episode. I've been a hardcore vaper now for over 6 years. In the 6 years I've vaped, I got the flu like only 4 times, never again to have bronchitis. For my band to sleeve revision surgery this year, I went through a serious of intensive testing. I passed with flying colors all my heart and lung tests, nuclear stress tests... etc. I was told that my chest x-ray was clear as if I never smoked, absolutely no scarring, no evidence of ever smoking. My blood and urine tests are all perfect. So congrats and glad you switched over. Vaping saves lives.

    Slippage..convert to Bypass???

Hi Lisa - Im hoping we can work together on this ebcause i just read your story and let me tell you a little about my story -- lap band 9/2005 02/06 - slip 03/06 - re band throught the past 5 years I have STRUGGLED and the ONLY time i lost weight was when the bad was so tight I barely could drink Water. One day I would be able to eat yogurt, the next day it would get stuck -- it was this way constantly and Id never know what i coul or couldnt eat unless i tried - so in teh end I have a band with 1/2 fill so i can eat normally but it defeats the purpose of even having TWO surgeries because here I am weighig in 10lbs les then my 1st surgery and 10 more then my second.... Just went to the Dr. yesterday and he suggested I look into the bypass revision. He made it sound really good but he also didnt leave out the fact that because it is a revision - the risks are automatically higher for compications. I sit here wondering if my body had this many compications with a simple band who will ti react to a bypass? Maybe I will do great with bypass and i will finally see results Ive been striving to see forever what is I am the 15% that thigs go drastically wrong My job now covers this revision - if I waitr health care might change ................................... I too dont know what to do! Complications? What kind of complications? Like is its "dumbing" more often.. k I can handle that.. If its leakge... that can cause death.. IDK I wish I could survey 100 ppl who had this themself! Help for us both What ever we decide , we r not alone! Lisa (yes im lisa as well)

    Slippage..convert to Bypass???

Mom - I read with interest this entire post and was really wanting to follow up with you. I had my LAP-BAND®® placed in March 2009 and haven't had ANY problems. I could eat or drink anything in small amounts and other than the first weeks after surgery haven't had the gas problems. Anyhoo, about three weeks ago, I overate a bit and had my first bout of vomiting. I went back to liquids and felt much better. But the vomiting had become a daily thing and got worse and worse. Finally ended up in the emergency room on Thursday, and the regular doctors didn't know squat about what to do for me. By the grace of God, my surgeon just happened to walk through the emergency room and saw me. He immediately asked for my x-ray and cat scan and told me I had slipped. He immediately removed all my fill (I was at a 5) and told me to go back on liquids for a few days than start putting in additional foods just like after surgery. He said that he has seen a number of slips correct themselves following this method. Has anyone else experienced this or even heard of it???? My insurance did not cover the surgery (I paid cash) so I will need to do some finagling to even get them to pay a surgeon they don't contract with (yay, Kaiser)take it out much less revise it. I'm terrified. I keep envisioning this thing bursting out of my stomach, like on Alien. I'm also terrified to put the weight back on...I'm down 85 lbs in 14 months and know there is no way I could maintain it without the band. HELP? Can it fix itself? I really don't want more surgery or life without the band. Cristy Banded March 31 at 265 pounds June 19, 180 pounds and scared poopless :smile2:

    Post Op hot flashes

Hello, I'm sorry to hear about the complications you've had following your bypass surgery. Now my curiosity is up concerning the hot flashes after surgery. I am getting hot flashes like crazy, but mostly at night when I'm sleeping. They are so annoying and uncomfortable. I am hot, so I kick the covers off, then I get cold... and it can just continue like that for hours, which is really tough because I'm losing sleep. Makes me feel like poop the next day. Anyway, I had my bypass revision around May 1st of this year. I guess the hot flashes started about 2 months ago. I am starting to wonder if I am perimenopausal, although I don't have any of the usual "symptoms" other than the hot flashes. I am 47 and had a hysterectomy 8 years ago, but my surgeon left my ovaries. Not much help to ya, but wanted to jump in on this topic since I'm experiencing something similar. I might dig around and find some of the posts/conversation on this topic. Wish you the best, get well soon and congratulations on your bypass surgery.
  14. I haven't had my band to sleeve revision surgery yet, but had to have my band emptied earlier this year due to complications. Good luck to you!

For Anyone Debating To Convert To Sleeve

What if your surgeon could make a case for having to do a revision due to medical problems resulting from your band? Would that speed up the process? Just a thought...

For Anyone Debating To Convert To Sleeve

Whilst its great that you're happy, some of those stats are a bit dodgy. The sleeve hasnt been around for ten years - oh, there might be some early experimental patients but it is almost impossible to state that the sleeve keeps weight off for longer than the lapband - even the band hasnt really been in common use long enough to make that comparison. That said, lapbands often work and work well but they ARE a pain in the butt. Mine is acting up after seven years, I have no doubt some kind of revision surgery is on the cards for me. I definitely do not feel this thing will be in me for another twenty. I would not change a thing about my journey and I always understood that lapbands didnt last forever. I think I would be brave enough to convert to a sleeve - my initial reaction of reluctance towards that surgery is kind of overshadowed now by the major surgeries I've had since. i live perfectly well without half my bowel so I wouldnt mind saying goodbye to part of my stomach in the name of health and normal weight for the rest of my life. The only thing about the sleeve is that it IS permanent and it ISNT really known what the long term outcomes are. It probably wouldnt stop me and it shouldnt necessarily mean that you dont do it, I mean so what if something better comes along if its working well for you? But its a bit early to go out shouting how much better than the band it is. Also, if you only had your band for four months, again, your right to convert and your gut instincts may well have been right for you. But you hadnt even had it long enough to gain proper restriction yet! It may well have kicked in better for you down the track.

    Problem-Need Advice ASAP

You mentioned: I think if my Wife told the surgeon she wanted surgery, he would schedule it ASAP. Admittedly, I know very little about the lap band. Honestly, it seem like your wife is being irresponsible on this, and as long as the scale is moving, even if it means an (IV feeding tube) she is willing to keep the band a little longer in hopes of getting to goal weight, even if it means a horrible complication?. Also, when searching for a new lap band surgeon you have to be persistent, you have to let them know that your wife is suffering, and usually if you tell them the issue, the receptionist or nurse will schedule you for an appointment, but it may be hard at this point, because your wife's surgeon IS WILLING TO HELP BY REMOVING THE BAND or replacing it with a larger band. If you and your wife is not willing to protect her health and get that band out ASAP, there is nothing this board can do for you, and if your wife suffer horrible complications, I doubt you will have any type of malpractice lawsuit because your wife is responsible for her complications by not doing anything about her issues, and not agreeing to remove the band (in a timely manner). Actually her surgeon IS trying to help her in this situation and your wife is refusing to get the band out, thinking the band will loosen, and she apparently is liking the rapid weight lost. That band IS NOT GOING TO GET ANY LOOSER, losing 20 pounds will loosen the band, your wife has lost 70, if it was going to loosen, it would have done so by now. She will cause damage to her esophagus and body over time because she will constantly vomit, and have obstruction and swelling until she has to get it removed in an emergency. The lap band IS the safest operation, when it is done properly and the patient acts responsibly, Revising to the Sleeve or Bypass will not guarantee her to be complication free, if the band is installed right, it is safer.
  18. I had my lapband surgery in July 2011. It slipped in July 2012 but it fell back in place once the Fluid was removed. I had it refilled the last week in December and it slipped again last week. I only had it filled for about 2 1/2 months before it slipped again My doctor wants to remove it and would like to do a revision to bypass or the sleeve (my choice). My question is, how hard is it to get approved for a revision due to mechanical failure? I'm worried because my bmi is 36 with no co-morbities. I'm the same weight as I was before the surgery. I have priority partners in Maryland. I was self-pay for my lapband. Thank you!

    Fill under fluoro...failed

My surgeon said that my abdomen is still a little lumpy from healing and that in another month it should be more flat, and I guess that will help locate the dome of the port. I sure hope thats the case. I'd really like to avoid a port revision surgery if possible.
  20. I had surgery 12/28/2009, I lost 42 lbs, then gained back 20 lbs! Boo! My band was not helping me lose. I did not follow the no liquid 30 min before or after rule. Poor planning on my part. I have a 14cc band, and it was filled to 10cc's. I had tests done to make sure my band was still in place, and in good condition. So I made an appointment to get another fill (I had not had my last one since 8/2010!!!! So I'm back on my journey! This time I'm praying it will be a success! I'm at 11.5 cc's, and I'm thinking this is my sweet spot! I know the sleeve is more successful (many of my friends did not lose on the band, so they had revision surgery, and got the vertical sleeve. Looking back, I wish I had chosen the sleeve. Here's hoping for success! ????
  21. Playing devil's advocate here. It sounds like the dividing wall between the new pouch and the remaining part of the stomach wasn't finished. I would guess this was because the liver was too large and in the way. I think a lot of people have misconceptions about laparascopic surgery, that b/c it's easier on the patient, it's easier on the surgeon as well. This is simply not true. Imagine if you had to sew a sleeve onto a shirt, but you couldn't actually use your hands. Instead, the whole thing is inside a box, which is also filled with packing peanuts, and the shirt is attached at various places inside the box, and all you have is a tiny camera and light inserted into the (dark) box at one area, and various instruments on lines inserted elsewhere. I am a veterinarian, I don't do laparoscopic surgeries (primarily b/c the cost to do so generally is beyond what most people want to pay for a non-specialist). Even with the abdomen fully open stem to stern, it can be very difficult to work around the liver and spleen, and my patients don't usually have a fatty liver, or adhesions from previous surgeries. It sounds like his surgeon worked hard for as long as he could but realized that his arms and back were getting fatigued (and likely he had already done 1 or 2 other surgeries that day) and was getting nowhere, and when you get tired you are more likely to make mistakes. Had he continued he might have nicked the spleen or hepatic artery, etc. Would you have wanted him to call in another surgeon who likely doesn't even do bariatric surgery? personally it sounds exactly like what I just went through with my surgery on Sep 9 - my fatty liver was in the way, and rather than do a partial, my surgeon opted to close up and try again after a liver-shrinking diet in a month's time. My surgeon said he could have done a partial but that the opening would be larger and I would probably end up needing a revision 6 mos down the road. It sounds like you just didn't get all the information from your surgeon yet. I hope that is the case and that he is planning to revise it for you. But I would be thankful to your surgeon for his good judgment instead of "going big" and possibly causing you a much worse outcome.

    TOMMORROW 1/3/11 IS MY DAY!!!!

Hi Nina, I'm sure you'll do great. I've heard that revision people do pretty well in the long run, as they have realistic expectations as they've already had WLS. All the best for tomorrow!
  24. Walk walk walk! It sounds stupid and everyone says it! I flew 3 days post-op. Not painful but exhausting. Wear compression socks and move your feet around. I walked so much in the hospital and didn't have any gas pain! I had a band 1 1/2 years ago and the gas pain was the worst pain I had ever felt. So I walked and 2alked and walked. Worked! No gas pain at all. I am not 5 days post-op from a band to sleeve revision. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using BariatricPal mobile app
