  1. According to my Bariatric program I was required to do 2 weeks full fluids post op followed by 2 weeks puréed. I have one more week to go at the puréed stage before soft food. The first 2 weeks I had 1/2 cup of cream of wheat thinned out with milk for breakfast with protein drink( Premium Nutrition) . Lunch and dinner were both broths or soups ( 1/2 cup) with either unflavoured protein powder added or I would supplement at least one protein drink. Once I got to the puréed stage I would only incorporate one protein drink to supplement the protein I was already getting from food. Breakfast is still cream of wheat but I add 1 tbsp of unsweetened apple sauce and I also have a soft poached egg. Lunch is usually 2-3 tbsps of tuna or salmon puréed with 2 tsp of light mayo or 2-3tbsps of puréed cottage cheese. Dinner is 2-3 tbsp puréed chicken, 2 tbsp of mashed potato and 2 tbsp of puréed peas or carrots. I’ll have a protein drink as a snack between lunch and dinner. 2-3 tbsps of 1% Yoghurt is also snack option. You can also continue to do broths and soups at this stage or alternate with puréed food. The most important thing to remember is to stay hydrated and get in all your protein (60-80grams). I fill a 2L bottle with water everyday and sip throughout the day, making sure it’s empty by the end of the day. I’m not at the soft food stage yet but looking forward to getting off of puréed. You are allowed decaf coffee or decaf tea or sugar free drinks as long as they are not carbonated. Anyway, hope that helps.
  2. Ok, just a few of my thoughts. Take them for what they are and are not exact facts. First, when or if you speak to your nutritionist make sure to mention that this happened (Just be honest with yourself and your team). Second, and this is where my thoughts come in but while I was on the pre-op liquid diet I didn't have any craving but my sodium level dropped significantly. I have to wonder if that is why you had that craving and that your body may be asking for a bit more salt. If you haven't had many electrolytes or have a "keto headache" then upping your salt quantity may be needed here. Now just take it as my 2 cents, but that is a potential cause of the craving or at least I would think it would be. After I consumed a significant amount of salt my keto headache went away. I did this by taking a broth based progresso soup and strained all of the solids out. This left me with a high sodium broth that tasted just like soup but with only a small number of calories. Good luck on your preop diet and you should be fine, but your bariatric team/nutritionist should be able to verify. I have read a few other stories of people eating much worse than you on the liquid diet here and if you need some validation on this, you can search for others mess ups. If we are honest with ourselves we will be able to achieve great results and be the best that we can be.

Is feeling hollow the same as hungry?

I still struggle with hungry vs satiated - my disordered eating led me to being obese, and I'm not sure I've figured it out even now. My dietitian keeps urging me to stop counting calories and try intuitive eating, but I'm not sure I'm there yet. I'm still not entirely in tune with my body. not all programs offer post-op therapy, although mine does have a couple of health psychologists on staff for patients who want that option. If yours doesn't, there are always outside therapists. A lot of bariatric patients have worked with therapists and find it helpful. Hopefully there are some in your area who work with bariatric patients and/or disordered eating (not that a generalist couldn't - but someone who has a specialty in that area is likely to be more aware of the issues we have)

    Recipes...I NEED RECIPES LOL

Good idea! The other place is the blog called "The World According to Eggface". She's a long-time bariatric patient who's been very involved in the bariatric community for many years. AND...she loves cooking. She also has a lot of recipes on her site for all stages.

I just asked my bariatric coordinator if I could take gummies because I tried the dissolvable tablets and the after taste was horrible! So I bought the pills from here and I gag every time I take them. I honestly have been very inconsistent and hope I can do gummies again. Btw she said I could take gummies but need to have iron as well

    Too old for plastics?

I’m 66 and thinking about getting my upper arms done. I had Bariatric surgery a little over 2 years. A little tummy but I can live with that. Hate feeling conscious about my arms.

    Cardio or Strength Training?

It’s impossible to turn muscle into fat or fat into muscle - they are completely different tissues. The problem lies within people who already have a high amount of muscle mass and gain fat as well, which makes them look bigger. Strength training is beneficial for everyone as long as you have clearance from your doctor (normally in the 6-8 week range). Increasing muscle mass increases your metabolism, bone density, and overall healthy look. I see many people who skipped lifting after Bariatric surgery and they tend to have less favorable outcomes when it comes to their “after” build. That said, it is hard to build muscle when you are in extreme calorie deficits post surgery, so there will not be a large change in muscle mass even with good genetics.

I've heard that as well (at least the part about Flintstones), but I don't say anything anymore because I've been blasted by mentioning it on forums. Evidently a lot of surgeons still recommend them. Mine still does as well, but I took Centrum from the beginning since I'd read it's a better choice if you're going with grocery store/drug store vitamins. My dietitian was fine with Centrum and did say it was a better option (although I see Flintstones Complete is still on their recommended list) I've also read on forums that bariatric-specific vitamins are better, although so far I've had luck with Centrum (or the generic equivalent)

It’s so weird how clinics vary so much. I mentioned the flintstones complete to the bariatric coordinator and she said they are absolutely not appropriate. She said that their is not research of FDA to back up a lot of vitamins and that with our absorption issues that we need bariatric vitamins. But clearly there are veterans out here that have had labs and are doing fine so I am going to keep doing my research. I don’t skimp on my health but I don’t like to just throw money away either.
  10. Thank you @sasha j ! Did they use your weight from when your PCP referred you or from your first bariatric appointment? My BMI is 41 so I’m worried if I work hard to lose too soon that they’ll tell me I don’t qualify. Seems counterintuitive lol.

    Comfort Foods

Hi all! I am not on stage 4 quite yet, but I was thinking about some of the comfort foods that I've always enjoyed making and eating. I thought it would be fun and interesting for people to share their bariatric friendly comfort food recipes, because I need some healthier versions of things I enjoyed pre-surgery. 😊
  12. Hi all! Just joined today. I am just starting the process w Kaiser (south Sacramento) and am hoping to find others that are doing the process (or already have) My referral was put in this week, and I was told it could take a couple of weeks to receive a call from Bariatrics Questions I have : Can I start losing weight NOW while I wait for the call? I’m mentally ready and want to keep my momentum going, but I don’t want to lose , say 10 pounds on my own and show up w a lower BMI and get turned away. Will they use my highest weight (this week the day of my referral was my highest weight EVER). Will any weight loss now be included in my required pre op weight loss ? How long did your Kaiser process take ? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    Body Dysmorphia is real

I would love to find a bariatric therapist, I am pre-surgery and have lost 115 pounds on my own but stalled now for 3 years. With strong attention to diet, I have managed not to creep back up but am looking at surgery to possibly help now. However, I still look at myself the same in the mirror and if anyone knows of a good therapist in the East Bay of San Francisco in California, I'd love a name. I am so tired of seeing 326 pounds in the mirror and feeling the same way.
  15. Do you know if you are a candidate for Linx, JRL? That is an option for fixing the hernia and LES, *if* you have enough esophagus motility for it. I would definitely talk to a surgeon who does Linx before I would agree to a bypass. It is hard for me to accept the idea of being forced into a bypass when I really regret ever getting bariatric surgery to begin with. I feel like I am worse off this way than I would have been with my original stomach and the extra weight.

then you will probably need those additional vitamins above and beyond your multivitamin. UNLESS you can find a bariatric-specific vitamin that includes enough of the requirements for those that you don't need to worry about taking them separately (and this is true of some bariatric-specific vitamins)

    LGBTQIA?

Your choice to support gun rights is just that. A choice. My being genderqueer and asexual is not a choice. It's who I am. And those two factors of my core being affect the way health care providers treat me and therefore my bariatric surgery journey. That's why LGBTQIA+ is relevant here.

which surgery did you have? A lot of bypass patients have to take B12 and D3 in addition to their multi (we don't absorb B12 well because of our lack of intrinsic factor, so we have to take it via sublingual tablet or injection, usually - so that precludes whatever is in the multi. Also, our vit D requirement is higher than what is in the multi). I don't think sleeve patients, in general, need quite as many vitamins (although some clinics have both kinds of patients on the same regimen) there may be some bariatric-specific vitamins where you don't have to worry about all these additional supplements - but check. You can compare what's written on the bottle to this list from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (you have to scroll down a ways to see their requirements): https://asmbs.org/app/uploads/2017/06/ASMBS-Nutritional-Guidelines-2016-Update.pdf
  19. I'm wondering about this. I have bipolar disorder and I'm still jumping through insurance hoops a few more months. I've lost almost 30 lbs and this last week I've been really irritable and speedy, and I'm wondering if it could be from losing the small amount of weight I've already lost (this time of year when it gets more light I tend to have problems anyway, so it could just be that, but increasing the meds just doesn't seem to be helping like it usually does). I lost about 100lbs about 5 years ago but I don't remember if/when during that process I had any manic/depressed periods. Anyone else? (I see this topic is really old; maybe by responding it will get renewed interest).
  20. Ok I need some help...lol. Im trying to order my vitamins, calcium citrate, B12 and vitamin d3 off of bariatricpal.com. So do i just order vitamins and just the calcium citrate because the vitamins have the other stuff needed or do I order all four items separately?
  21. I can't speak to post-bariatric surgery specifically, but the latest research for the general community is that people should only eat breakfast if they are inclined to eat breakfast. If people who are not generally breakfast eaters start eating breakfast, the latest studies show they will eat more calories throughout the day, whereas the reverse is true for people who are naturally inclined to eat breakfast. If "natural breakfast eaters" skip breakfast, they will compensate by overeating later in the day. No, I do not have the citation for this study, I read this a number of years ago but read that there were a number of similar findings from other studies. And I don't recall this being tested in bariatric surgery patients or people with diabetes, etc.

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

Hoping you get bumped up! I had my MD consult and pre-op classes today, along with my final labs, xrays and covid test. Was hoping for a surgery date next week, but really expected it to be further out...bariatric director pulled me out of class and asked me if I would want the cancellation spot on Monday! Thank goodness I have been doing the pre-op diet for over a week.

we were told not to take gummies. I've always taken Centrum or the generic equivalent (CVS and Walgreens carry generics - other places probably do as well). I started with the chewables and then switched to regular tablets when I was a few months out. A lot of people take Flintstones, but make sure to get Flintstones Complete if you go that route. P.S. if you take a grocery store or drug store vitamin, like the ones above, you have to take two of them every day. There are also special bariatric-specific vitamins you can order, and with some of those you only have to take one (to meet your multivitamin requirement)

If it helps, these are also listed on my list: 2 Tablets of the following: Bariatric Advantage Chewable Essential Multivitamin Bariatric Advantage Multi Chewy Bite Centrum Chewable Flintstones Complete Chewable or 4 Tablets of the following: Bariatric Fusion Complete Chewable Multivitamin But people here have also given other suggestions.
