    Thirty-year-old sleevers

35 male but with bypass. Surgery was quick. But recovery for me was a little bit harder than some was in excruciating pain for the first 24hrs but had some good drugs given by IV... But I'm a sook haha. I was in bed for the first 2 days.. the time went quick though.. belly was tight swollen for a while though.. had 5 holes in your belly.. 8 months since start of my journey 6.5 months since surgery and I'm below goal and my skin isn't that much of an issue I'm not sure why I got lucky might be the amount of water I drink everyday.... Don't really have much of a social life still in recovery mode in my head but my new look and body has definitely helped my social anxiety issues.. People in general treat you better when you're "skinny"

    Loose skin fears

I think everyone worries about the loose skin.. It was in the back of my mind but I felt it's worth it for a new life and ffwd 8 months and I've shed 154lbs and I've been very lucky with minimal skin issues mostly on my lower belly and arms but not that noticeable unless naked LoL I've been told as time goes on it may bounce back and when the covid-19 issues go away I'll be looking into gym and toning up over the next year... I'll be 36 this year but I feel and look better than I have in 20 years.

    Loose skin fears

This is a very real fear of mine also! The last time I was this big, I lost 70 lbs naturally, but had very little loose skin. I was still in my 20s then and I lifted weights and worked out 5-6 days/wk, which I think helped. I’m 32 now, so I worry about how different my skin’s elasticity may be at present. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll take a bit of loose skin if it means I can stop the threat of chronic illness and this joint pain, but I’m definitely concerned about it. I’ll be saving for plastic surgery anyhow.

How Bad is the Flight Home?

I’m sorry I can’t answer, but I am curious about response to this myself. I had my surgery last year. I’m venturing into getting skin removal surgery in June that entails a long flight from Florida to San Diego then crossing into Mexico. My flight is June 14th very early morning, my return on June 21 technically the 22. I’ll actually be going home with surgical drains. It’s a trusted hospital affiliated with BariatricPal. I haven’t thought about the flight itself until reading your post. id suggest that on flight you get permission to be able to get up and walk about as needed so as not to have any discomfort or develop blood clots in your legs. Have a comfortable cushion with you. Particularly a small one to put over your stomach between your belly and the seatbelts. I’ve trouble flying as is with my own chronic medical conditions. I’d say you’d just make sure you have taken your pain medication, and something to relax you wouldn’t hurt either ie. Diazepam. So as your muscles won’t tense up too much during the flight. I think you should be ok. I would think if they needed to keep you longer in hospital for any reason that they would. Meaning they would not send you out unless you could handle the flight (I’d hope) it sucks using plane toilets but don’t get dehydrated! best of luck to you on your journey
  5. @Tiff71This was actually happening to me and I thought I was crazy!! Starting in early March, I would just be sitting down and feel my skin starting to swell. The final straw was going for a walk/jog and when I stopped, I had a major flare up on my thighs and arms! I had a virtual appointment and was prescribed generic Zyrtec. I have been taking it for about 2 weeks now and have not had a flare up again. Have you changed anything recently (vitamins, food)? For me, I think it was a new sugar free drink or these new bariatric vitamins that I tried. I stopped both until I can get to allergist for them to do some testing. But it is frustrating, especially when you can't figure out what the heck is going on.
  6. Today is the one year anniversary of my surgery. Woo hoo! 91kg & a BMI of 35.1 down to 51kg & a BMI of 19.7. I’ve been maintaining my weight for about two months now after dropping 9kg more than I was intending as I sorted out my maintenance plan. But I’m not complaining.

i was fortunate before my weight loss & did not have the serious health issues of high blood pressure, diabetes, heart problems, sleep apnoea, etc. usually associated with obesity but I’m sure they were in my future.

Now I dash around & about, go up & down stairs, play with my young nieces & nephews & live my life without breathing heavily or tiring quickly.

My hair is growing back. My BMs are 95% regular. My face doesn’t look as gaunt & lined as it did. I could do without the boney butt, ribs, knee, ankle & wrist pain but it’s small price. And I’ve decided my loose skin is like a badge of honour for my weight loss.

I’m very much looking forward to the next part of my journey.

  7. I don't think you can get the dosages you need after WLS in one pill. Read the dosages recommended from link posted. A number of these are supposed to be taken several times a day as body cannot use all at once. For example, Calcium and D3 should be split into 3 to 4 doses a day. Vit D3 in particular requires 3000 IU per day. None of the "1 pill a day" have that amount. Vit D deficiency is prevalent in all populations (75% of people) and has been suggested Vit D deficiency has a lot to do with weak immune systems to fight coronavirus. Severity and mortality associated with D3 deficiency. Vitamin D is not in food. You must either take supplement or get sunlight on skin without sunscreen everyday. In winter, not possible. Centrum Adult chewable only has 400 IU of Vit D3.

  10. Man, I used to be somewhat addicted to that show. Very sad, and should be an eye opener for all , struggling with WL or not! As for do I think it is real. Yes I do think that it is real. I almost scheduled my surgery with Dr. Now but decided against it, then did more research and 2 years later had the surgery done free of charge through my insurance near my own hometown thank God! He is a bit harsh and I hope that his harshness is only for tv purposes. I also wonder, does he not require each client to do nutrition classes or have a psych eval? I mean, I only hear him require this after he has been very harsh, has made accusations, and has turned someone away due to their 'dishonesty" and/or unready/unwillingness. So the 15 pounds a month- that really depends on how much weight that a person still has left to loose for the height they are, age, etc. It also depends on which surgery they got. So a person might be 4 months away from the date of their surgery but if they are still more than 100 pounds overweight, depending on their height 5, 10, or even 15 lbs per month (again depends on the WLS that they chose), is probably not too much to ask. I will say that this was something that bothered me about Dr. Now, I feel like he had the same expectations for which client which is garbage. Some Dr.'s give goals before they will perform the WLS on anyone, others don't. I was very hesitant because of this and I don't think I would have been able to get the surgery so quickly if there was a special WL goal beforehand. I did inquire about this and the way my Dr.'s looked at it was they could give a goal but many people have a food issue and having to meet some goal is only prolonging a persons journey to health. So, yeah, "My 600-lb life" is probably fact and no I did not have a WL goal before surgery, although I had one after surgery (I was told that I was loosing too fast, in my research I am loosing at a normal rate for the WL, duodenal switch loop, that I had and I personally think as long as I am healthy and losing weight (not under or over), it is all good. Side note- I can't stand to watch that show anymore. It seems different than when it first started and I don't like that the journey isn't fully followed or explored the way that it seemed like it was back in the day. I think that there are also different versions with different names as well, which can be why it seems so different. I have always had many motivations for WL, and that show was a big part of it!

    February 2020 Post-Op Thread

Hello everyone! Hope you all are staying healthy and safe! I weigh on Fridays, so this is my 3 month mark. I am down 30 pounds in the 3 months since surgery, 40 including the 3 week pre-op weight loss. Not very fast, and this week was barely a pound, but I am happy with it. I have really been increasing movement and I am walking between 4 and 5 miles per day, spread out over the day. I am experimenting with food, and am eating 700 to 850 calories per day. My protein intake is good, and I fight to get the water in! Downside....my hair is soooo thin, and I am noticing lots of saggy upper arm skin. Hope everyone is hanging in!

    Severe mood swings

a lot of women complain about moodiness the first few months. I'm not sure if there's actual medical research to back this up, but many people have said it's because estrogen is stored in fat cells, and when you lose weight quickly, a lot of that is released. Many women also report screwed-up menstrual cycles the first few months, so I suspect the hormone theory is probably correct. It should all work itself out though - it doesn't seem to last more than a few months - so you may be near the end of it. 45 lbs in 3 months is pretty good. It takes many of us about a year to lose 100 lbs, so you're doing just fine. as far as baggy, saggy skin - some of that will look better eventually because things seem to re-distribute a bit over time - but after a 100 lb weight loss, you'll inevitably have some saggy skin. I had a ton of it. I could easily hide it in clothes so no one knew it was there, but *I* knew it was there, so I had it removed when I was about three years out. So that's an option if you decide you can't live with it..
  14. I am 3 months out from RNY surgery and have lost about 45lbs , the weight has been slow moving this past month and I work out 7 days a week, I do a full mix of cardio , weight lifting and yoga/Pilates / barre and follow a Keto or Lazy Keto diet. Depression , anxiety, sleeplessness , restlessness and anger have been a constant no matter how much I keep my endorphins up. Is this normal? Is it normal to look in the mirror or photos and still be angry and upset with what you see? Are the mood swings 3 months out still normal? I’m disgusted and saddened by what is looking back at me and I am critiquing myself harder than before when I was 200lbs , 154lbs just doesn’t feel like the progress I was hoping g for at 3 months and I feel like no matter how hard I work out I am not seeing the muscles or definition in my body , all I see is saggy skin , bingo arms and cellulite. I just want to know am I the only that has felt or feels this way ?
  15. Your feelings and thoughts about food are completely normal at this stage!! We all got here because we have an unhealthy relationship with food. I lived on fast food for many years. It was my reward when I had a good day, it was my treat when I had a bad day, etc. I always found a reason why I deserved to binge on junk. I'm only 4 months out from surgery, but am now finding new ways to reward myself. Lately it's been skin care products! LOL!! Sounds silly, but I'm having fun trying new products, and taking the time to do my morning and evening skin care routine. Once COVID19 is over, I plan on treating myself to a new hairstyle and teeth whitening too! Hang in there! We have all been there, and we are all in this together!
  16. Take lots of pictures with my kids, and BE in the picture for a change. It sounds so vain, but I hide from cameras, and if I died tomorrow, my kids would have very few pictures of me. I just want to feel comfortable enough in my own skin again, and BE in the pictures!!
  17. My doctors said the surgery & sudden reduced food intake is a shock to our system and one of the side effects is that our normal hair loss cycle accelerates. My dietician advised there was nothing much that could be done except keep up my multivitamins & ensure I meet my protein requirements. Biotin, silica, collagen, & other supplements to benefit your hair will only make your new growth stronger & not reduce the hair loss. Your hair itself is dead and regularly sheds like our skin cells. It’s just happening faster. My loss began at about month 3 and started to slow at about month 10. It’s pretty well back to normal now & I can feel it’s thickening again. I lost a good 50% of my hair. Thank gracious I had a lot of it to begin with.
  18. I've heard of it starting up as late as six months post-op (mine started up at five months out), so don't get too complacent if you've made it the first two or three months with no hair loss - it could still happen. I don't know that there's much you can do about it other than stay on top of your supplements so it doesn't get any worse than it already is going to be. Some people claim biotin works for them, others say it didn't do a damn thing (and some get facial hair from it - but it didn't do much for the hair on their head). luckily, most people just "shed" rather than lose clumps of hair, so you're likely the only one who will notice the loss. Yes - some people do lose a lot - but majority don't loose enough for others to notice.

    Loose skin fears

Loose skin better than full skin. I am out 7 years. At my lowest weight since surgery I was bothered by my saggy stomach, thighs and arms. But then I gained back 60 pounds and wished my skin was so loose again. I have lost 40 of that gain but it was triggered by a breast cancer recurrence. Now I have flat stomach, new fake breast from that stomach fat and skin and saggy arms again. I realize that I worried about that shit too much. Health is what matters. If you can afford the PS I will tell you that the tummy tuck I got with reconstruction was free but very painful and I have a high pain threshold. But it’s a temporary few weeks of pain.

    Thirty-year-old sleevers

Hi I'm 61 y/o and a colleague of mine had vsg a couple of yrs ago she is 50 something. She has mentor me thru this process. I can say her experience, which motivates me is remembering when post-op commence is EXERCISE and keep to your protein, and low carb intake. Yes there's loose skin, especially if you had it before you began to lose weight, but as you build muscle overtime, you can reduce it to a minimal degree. The amount of loose skin is dependent upon, as you may know, the amount of skin elasticity remaining. So for me, I expect to have an amount I may have to dress up (LOL). My colleague is a "beast" when it comes to exercise and she looks amazing, also her diet is vegan base. However, as have been commented, you are going to be so happy with your weight reduction, and when you stall be glad because you can use that to build muscle, and reduce fat. to get ahead of the loose skin, possibly If you loose fat quickly, you will gain loose skin quickly. Thirty something! Girl you're a babe. You are going to look magnificent.

    Thirty-year-old sleevers

I'm 32. I had the Loop DS 3 months ago, but it involves a sleeved stomach as part of the surgery, if that counts... I have a LOT of excess skin, but that's bound to happen when you lose over a hundred pounds, but I'd take it over being as heavy as I was any day of the week! And... what social life lol California is essentially shut down with really only the grocery stores, hospitals, and a few 'essential' businesses open so... I stay at home. I'm an introvert so it honesty isn't that different from my norm anyway... As to post op life, the first week or two is hard and then (for me) it was smooth sailing until two weeks ago when I hit the most ANNOYING stall EVER! I'm so annoyed about it because my weight isn't moving at all and I want to throw my scale so bad! I know it's normal to have stalls and that they can last for weeks, but it's really discouraging and I can't wait for it to be over already! -_-" So yeah, stalls happen. And they suck!

    Loose skin fears

I used to weigh 373 lbs. Loose skin vs. weighing almost 400 lbs? It's a no-brainer. And yes - I used to worry about it too when I was pre-op and an early post-op, but I think most of us who've been around for awhile and lost a truckload of weight wonder why we wasted even one brain cell worrying about it. I actually did have mine removed - no one knew it was there because it was really easy to hide in clothes, but I got tired of looking at it (e.g., when I was in the shower) and didn't like the way it slapped up against me when I exercised. But here is a picture of me before I had the loose skin removed. See it? Trust me, there was a lot of it..
  23. We have almost similar starting stats...almost: I started at 5'2", 235 lbs (BMI 43), 46 yrs old. I'm 1.5 years out now, and I am 5'1 and a bit (yep, I got shorter!) and 115 lbs, and a year older. I did get to goal weight comparatively fast (I got to 127 lbs in about 7 months), and yep, I ended up with loose skin. I had plastic surgery (Tummy Tuck, Arm Lift & Breast Lift) at 14 months to get rid of it. I think the majority of people end up with some level of loose skin. Some worse/better than others. A lucky few get none at all. Below is a side by side pic of what my bod looked like the day before wls surgery, then 4 months after starting maintenance, then 6 weeks after plastics. I will say that even if I didn't get plastics, my loose skin was easily hidden with clothes, and like some of the posters have said above, I'd take loose skin over my pre-wls fat any day.

    Thirty-year-old sleevers

Hey. I’m 33. I didn’t have the sleeve but had the bypass and can give you what I know so far from it. I had surgery on 2/19/20. They went in and found some kind of rare hernia that they said could be very fatal if it had not been found so they had to do a lot work to that area. My doctor said that my recovery would be a little worse than normal because of it. I don’t take to anesthesia very well. As soon as I woke up, I was definitely in pain and let them know. I guess they fixed it cause I passed back out right away. This happened pretty much the rest of that first day of surgery. I would wake up in pain, they would give me more meds in my IV, and I would go right back out. I didn’t get up to walk until the next day. I wasn’t able to do much at a time but I did what I could. I had to stay 3 nights in the hospital. I had a very hard time getting my liquids in and I still do to this day. Once I got home, I stopped taking pain meds and felt decent. I was definitely sore but it was very doable. I was not able to start eating soft foods until week 4. Until then, I was having a really hard time getting in my protein and I felt really tired and week most of the day. By week 6, I was doing much better. Today, I feel great! I’ve lost 55 pounds and I am feeling it! I can’t answer your questions on the loose skin as I’m not to that point yet but I honestly don’t care. I do plan on getting a tummy tuck done and maybe a couple other things once I get to where I need to be but I really think I would rather deal with the loose skin than being morbidly obese and at a BMI of 50!!! I’m able to play more with my children and actually keep up with them! My husband and I are able to do “more” if you can get my meaning. Life is just so much better and I still have a significant amount of weight to lose! Good luck with your surgery.

    Frustration

Thank you all, I feel much better reading these responses; I was right to share this concern. I am not sure if I am technically on track, but will make an effort to find out. I am pulling out all the stops for the first week of May with water, protein, carb and calorie counting, etc, that will make it easier to recalculate. I use Silk protein milk with protein powder for breakfast, 8 oz of that stuff adds 10 grams of protein! The covid freak out has made me a little lax, but it also made me realize how I use food as a crutch, and I don't like it and don't want to be there again. I was slow loosing, and then it did come to a grinding halt for several weeks, and that is when the frustration mounted. I had not taken my height into account for the creation of a calorie deficit, I will look into that. I like to watch "My 600 lb Life" to keep things in perspective- those folks are facing the same issues as I am and they would probably be overjoyed to "only" need to drop 50-60 pounds. So right to try to focus on the victory so far. I can't speak for anyone else, but I was always subjected to negative conduct, so learning to keep my head up is something new. My job is a foolish place- and I work for a health care company! Thank you, thank you! 😘
