Why did you choose VSG over other bariatric surgeries?
Tony B - NJ replied to ManicPixie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
For your size and BMI, the Sleeve is going to get you to where you need to be weight wise for sure if you stick to the plan and commit yourself to it. I think it is a little less radical than the bypass and a few less issues to worry about like dumping, absorption of nutrients etc. They say you can lose 60-70 percent of your excess weight on it which is I think on the conservative side because I am over 80 percent of excess weight lost and still going (slowly, but still losing). I am more than happy with the result. -
Why did you choose VSG over other bariatric surgeries?
ShoppGirl replied to ManicPixie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Also, i was lower BMI but I went in there with my mind set on bypass. My surgeon said (as so many people do) that the surgery is just a tool. He said that the bypass would be like getting out a jackhammer when a regular hammer would do the job just fine. Both would work but the bypass was just overkill for me. -
Why did you choose VSG over other bariatric surgeries?

I went back and forth between sleeve and bypass because I was worried I had GERD and also wanted the best weight loss (my surgery center also does only sleeve and bypass, because those have the best data). My surgeon and the second opinion I got both recommended sleeve, in part because of medications I take (like @ShoppGirl) and also because it's just a very simple option. I know you are worried about regaining weight, but the thing is, you have to take care of yourself by changing your habits. And you're less likely to be really sick after sleeve than DS (although many people with DS are totally fine!) -

The sleeve has the least amount of absorption issues and the least amount of recovery time. For me, the ability to get back to an active life i started to build upon before surgery was important. I also wanted something that would remove the hunger hormone and the sleeve was my best option. I’ve also found there are less overall issues with the sleeve but the weight loss is just as good as the bypass. -
Why did you choose VSG over other bariatric surgeries?

Hi y'all, I'm new here. Scheduled for surgery June 24th (but I started the whole process February 2021, long story). When researching which surgery to get, I was hoping for a duodenal switch, because it is supposed to have the best long-term outcome. Unfortunately my surgeon doesn't do DS, he only will do the VSG or RNY. And even then, he'll only do the RNY if you have diabetes or GERD. With him, then, my only option is the sleeve. (I don't live in an area where I can really "shop around" for bariatric surgeons). Honestly, I'm not upset, because it does seem to be one of the least invasive procedures... our insides aren't getting rearranged, we're just getting part of our stomach taken out. That being said, I'm kind of glad that the sleeve can so easily be revised into a DS, if I need it to be down the road. (I've been fat my whole life, so I'm really worried about regain). Obviously I'd need to search further away for a surgeon to do the DS, but I'll cross that bridge if or when I come to it. I'm hoping the sleeve will do the trick, though. I just want to be healthy. My ten-year-old daughter is autistic, and non-speaking, with very high support needs, so it's likely she'll never be able to live independently. I just want to make sure I'm around for her as long as I possibly can be. Anyway, hi! I'd love to hear your stories! -
I'm doing the bypass mostly because I have severe heartburn and getting a sleeve gives you really bad heartburn so why add to it? I don't want to burn out my esophagus. Sent from my Pixel 6 using BariatricPal mobile app

It won’t let me correct it. I had bypass July 2015. Never had revision.

My stay is three nights. I am in mexicali Mexico. Mine is a revision . After surgery in the past the sore thoat was really bad. We drove almost 4 hours to the border. Left our car on the US side and was picked up. Since we have been here before checking the hospital out I am not as nervous as I thought. -
Nice. your profile says you had the sleeve in April of 2015. Did you get a revision or is that just a error?

I had bypass in July 2015.

Please tell me I haven't failed.

Revision: it takes a month to recover from an actual sleeve, and I have way too fast-paced a job to do that. I'd probably have to take unpaid leave or even quit the job. I can't. ESG was only a thing I could do because it had a week recovery time tops. If the sleeve had a week recovery, I'd have done that instead. Regarding vanity: They know. They have all my medical stats. They know my blood pressure is something that people aspire to, that my labs are clean as a whistle, and that I can drag a kayak a mile through choppy waters to shore or walk 10 miles straight for 3 hours. They know I have major psychological issues surrounding my body. I've seen a therapist for over a decade for in part this reason. It hasn't made me like how I look whatsoever, just helped me cope enough to have a reasonable life. I'm on several psych meds. As it stands, I have a view on this that is similar to transition. When you have gender dysphoria, people who are any kind of sane by modern science don't tell you to suck it up and go to therapy to embrace being your birth sex. They tell you to seek hormone treatments and transition, because transition works. I don't think that trying to love being fat works either. You change your body if you want to change your body. I'm going to cut back to 1000 cal/day goal and hate my life, but I guess it's something. And I mean technically I guess I have lost like 30 lbs worst case. I'm just so pissed and dismayed that I haven't gotten below pre-pandemic weight before my wedding. I want to be Internet Hot (tm) at my wedding. -

I read the 3 pages on the original post you are referring to. And I have to agree with you on this. I understand people want support, but your original reply to the article was not rude, you tried your best to say it in a nice way. If people just want support with whatever their results are they anything we do in life is okay. I agree we all need to be positive , but if someone has a surgery that went far from what was planned as far as results, something needs to change, maybe a revision surgery, a change in the diet, see a therapist to deal with the demons we all have. You seemed to be more helpful than most on that chat that are just cheering on anything as its greaaaaaattt like tony the tiger. I really wish the OP of that chat a very successful weight loss journey. -

Baseball size bulge where port was after removal
Band Remover 2022 replied to lisamariec's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
HI Holly, I'm not sure - the doctor said I would no longer qualify for any other type of WLS (sleeve/bypass) because my BMI is normal range. However, that doesn't matter, I wouldn't put myself thru anymore surgeries anyway, personal choice. I will say, I have seen quite a few posts on this forum though where people are switching from band to sleeve. I would highly recommend getting it removed. 20 years is a long time and the doctor explained to me that there were two different types of bands when they came out., One mechanism had hooks, that were designed to easily install and eventually...easily remove the band. However, over time, the hooks basically sink and bury themselves into your intestines - and the surgeon has to dig/pry them out, hence the pain. He also said in every case of his (and his partners) where the patient had the band with the hooks - he has had to extract them this way. They will not even do the bands anymore. I'm not trying to scare you - just being honest and helping get the message out of how dangerous these things can become. Take care and good luck!!! -
Lapband removal - not totally confident w/surgeon
Daddyof4 replied to hollywrites2u's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I had my band removed and revision to bypass in the same surgery. I did have to do the whole program, get cardiac clearance, etc. and did the liquid diet for two weeks to shrink my liver. One night in the hospital and then home with pain meds. I don’t get why your doctors won’t do both at once but I guess everyone is different including doctors. -
Surgery Coordinator messaged me today to let me know Cigna approved my insurance packet. I see my surgeon on Monday, 5/16, and we should be able to set up a surgery date. I’m hoping for June 8 or later…but not too much later as I want to get this done. I will also be having a large hiatal hernia repaired during the gastric bypass.

TORe Gastric Revision Procedure
GeorgiaPeach48 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Good afternoon. I just joined the forum, and I was wondering if anyone has had the TORe procedure done? Thoughts? Weight loss after? I have an appt this coming Monday for a consult. I had gastric bypass 9 years ago and lost 110 lbs but never got to my goal weight, plus I've gained about 20 lbs since the bypass. I'm just trying to weigh my options before I commit to anything. Thanks Amy -
Self pay- insurance doesn’t cover WLS
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Changenprogress's topic in Insurance & Financing
Is it possible to do a bypass instead of a DS? Sleeve and bypass are the most common, and insurance tends to like to cover those versus a DS. If you switch, you may find you have much better luck. -

The problem i have with food is i know when i am full but i go back for more for instance dinner i eat until i am full but i make the excuse that i want more i don't know how to explain it and i drink a lot of fluids and then i feel bloat and i hate the feeling it gives me i lose my breath and the only way for me to feel better and to catch my breath is to lay on my back in bed and then i let out this burp ( sorry TMI i know) then i get up and feel a little better anyway what causes the bloat ? Rich I forgot to mention when it gets close to dinner time my wife or i will say to the other "what do you want for dinner " i hate thinking about food or my wife or i will say while we are eating dinner what do you want for dinner tomorrow night we are not even finished with the meal in front of us and Shes asking about the next nights menu if you will....By the way my wife had gastric bypass surgery years ago and has stayed under 200 ( this is NOT her goal weight ) for years i think it's been like 17 years and she's a chef and has bachelors degree, I think in culinary arts i will talk with you soon. -
Hello About nine years ago I had the gastric sleeve and lost a bunch of weight. I gained it all back. Almost a year ago I had bypass surgery and have done very well. I’ve lost over 90 pounds and am less than 10 pounds away from my goal. I am taking it far more seriously this time and feel I will keep it off. My problem is that when I look in the mirror I only see a person that weighs 250 pounds and feel like a fraud when I’m shopping for a size 12 in pants. Am I the only one or have other people had struggles with this as well? thanks

Weight loss expectations VSG to RNY??
JEANMR1 replied to mi75's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had sleeve surgery about 9 years ago. Went from 260 to 166 roughly. Gained most of it back. No Gerd. Hated myself. I’m almost 1 year post op conversion to bypass. I have lost weight faster throughout. Was 245 and now 153. I have lost weight faster because I don’t take it for granted this time. -
One more try before surgery again

The revision surgery was to put my lapband back where it needed to be. It slipped out of place. -
I eat a ton of fruit every day and have never dumped. I once ate a cup of Cheerios cereal though and my heart raced. I didn't have any other symptoms but it was a strange feeling for sure. Someone earlier said that was some form of dumping. Other than that one time, it never happened again but then again i don't eat a cup of cereal with sugar in one sitting anymore lol. It was an exception for me due to the circumstances. My mother in law has serious dumping issues but that's because she eats cookies, cake and more and ignores any and all bypass rules. She has to live in the bathroom (diarrhea) and then lay down for hours. She had no issues with fruit, just sweets like cookies and candy... Etc. For the most part, most don't dump as others have said. Sent from my SM-S908U using BariatricPal mobile app
