revise from Band to sleeve with a low BMI... Cash pay?
BayougirlMrsS posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Good afternoon all..... how many of you had sleeve revision after complete success with the band. Banded in 2009. 2009 SW: 232lbs, LW: 135lbs... but my best most consistent weight 143 for 7+ years. Zero trouble till 2017, got the flu and slipped my band. I managed to keep my weight down pretty good and gained 30lbs in the 2.5 years. But no matter what i ate and no matter what i did (crossfit 3-4 x per week) i couldn't lose. Any people revise from Band to sleeve with a low BMI... Cash pay? -
revise from Band to sleeve with a low BMI... Cash pay?
revyinut replied to BayougirlMrsS's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I got my lap band in 2006 and had great success losing over 100 lbs. I stayed around 140 lbs. for many years until I began having problems aspirating at night in 2016. I had my fill removed and I believe that caused the band to slip because I started having even more problems such as gastroparesis. I decided to have the band removed in 2017 - I had already gained about 30 lbs. when I quit smoking earlier that year and believed my weight had stabilized. Long story short, over the next 2 years I gained another 50 lbs for a total of 70 lbs. (BMI 32) I had lap band to sleeve revision surgery in Nov 2019 and self-paid by going to Tijuana for surgery. -

That's exactly how I feel! If you're serious (ie willing to comply with Vitamin and Protein requirements) and meet the weight requirements then the Duodenal Switch really does seem to have excellent long term results. There are people over on obesityhelp doing well 10 years out from DS surgery. Bypass proves to be only short term for many as you only malabsorb calories for a couple of years and then your intestines adapt and go back to absorbing 100%, that's why many look to revise to the DS (not easy from bypass though). I'm sure DS surgery for just the intestines has to be possible for GPSers. They have been known to do just the intestinal part for diabetics in Spain, as this surgery has a 99% resolution rate for diabetes (and a significant improvement for the remaining 1%). -
I am almost 11 weeks post op and still can't keep much down.
shunhunter replied to AmyH62's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the sleeve 5 years ago and due to acid reflux and my esophagus was collapsing I had to have a revision to the bypass 14 months ago . I'm a 105lbs now and want to stop losing. I have been having issues since I had the revision. I just had a pick line in that I gained 20lbs and 3 weeks later it was gone. At first it was diarrhea and now its vomiting. I seemed to can't get a break. I felt great with the pick line in but that is dangerous walking around with a IV in your arm feeding you dripping over your heart. I just has another EDG on Monday and they found nothing again. I had to spend another $300 for that. I am trying to stay positive but this is getting very hard and expensive. Need someone to talk to. -
Banded 11 years ago and just starting to have problems
Matt Z replied to Kingb40's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I had the band for over 6 years, didn't have any major issues, I got stuck a lot, leafy greens hurt to eat, stalled out with the weight loss really hard. It just wasn't working. The Barium swallow and fluoroscope didn't show any issues, but when my surgeon went to take the band out, it was 100% completely encapsulated in scar tissue. It took them 3+ hours to get it out when it normally takes less than an hour. I'm glad I was revised to the bypass, who knows what would have happened if I left that band in there. -
Thats the day I get my revision from lap-band to sleeve. I am nervous...I am excited...I hope I have the strength to go through it. I have to see the hemotologist first as I may need to get Iron infusions cause I am very anemic...I hope that everything works out...crossing fingers

June Sleevers! Hows It Going?
4weightlosssake replied to petite-size-me!'s topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Surgery date was June 14th and I'm down 41 lbs. it was a revision surgery from lap band and I'm so so glad I revised. I look so much healthier at the same weight I looked sick with lap band. I don't even exercise and still the weight is coming off gradually. I can't believe I put my body through the crap of lap band for more than 3 years. I was 198 lbs the morning of surgery and 157 lbs this morning. -
Unfortunately I have NO idea. I didn't take any measurements. My waist at the belly button stayed the same i think. As you can tell from the before pics it was the 2 big a$$ rolls above and below the belly button that caused me problems. I was a size 4 before surgery and thankfully am still a size 4 now. I was hoping I didn't got down any because it is difficult to find size 2's around here. Now I can just wear the 4's without body shapers and no muffin tops. You will love your results. I know I do. If it wasn't that the girls needed lifted I wouldn't even consider the revision surgery that my PS wants to do. She wants to cut across the top of the torso and pull up to get the rest of the excess skin. Since we can do it at the same time as the breasts I will have it done, otherwise I am pleased as punch!

June Sleevers! Hows It Going?
blondeej replied to petite-size-me!'s topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
HEY JUNE SLEEVERS!!! :) I was 6 months post-op on the 11th of Dec. I am down 94 lbs since my revision and 120 total since starting my WLS journey. Things have slowed wayyyy down the past month or so! I've been at the same weight for quite some time. But this is normal. I've started working out pretty hard-core the past month and a half - I am at the gym 5-6 days a week because I really want to start toning! I love my sleeve!! Keep up the hard work y'all!!! -

That is so good to hear. I have to have my band out in a month. Partial slip, and surgeon says he will try to revise my band or take it out period. He feels I didn't do well at my 2 yr check up. Since I only lost 30 lbs and my bmi didn't go down enuf. I'm not diabetic anymore so I think I did good. I'm praying for a revision Sent from my iPhone using LapBandTalk -
So 3 weeks ago I has the band to sleeve revision and so far I'm ok. The only problem I'm having is getting all my liquids down or drinking or eating any protein. I feel so full once I drink like 3 sips of my shake and that's all I can get down for the rest of the day. My dr said don't worry but I'm weak and can't even exercise because I have no food in my system. Has this happened to anyone else?

Who is with me on the Back on Track train? Let everyone hear your stories - good, bad and ugly.

I had RNY may 1, 2009. The smallest I ever got was 147.5 and that was only for a short time. I'm 5'7". Upon graduating from my masters program j moved back home to Indiana and since jan 2012 I've steadily watched the scale move up and up. Now I weigh 190 plus or minus .5 pounds depending on the time of the month. I'm ready to take back my life! My family is loving and supports me but my mom who also had RNY and a revision is a good pusher. I'm single and feel like I'll never be loved by anyone until I love myself. And I don't think I will live myself until I get back on track. I just don't know where to start. I need support from a community that understands all that I've been through and I'm hoping to find that here. -
I would recommend the sleeve. Doctors are offering it more now because insurance companies have caught on to the high success rate it has, and are now covering the procedure. FYI I was told that if you are not happy with the sleeve you could have it revised to RNY, although this choice is very rare. BTW I am 11 days post op and love my sleeve so far. Good luck to you.

Can Army Veterans Get This Procedure?
Wheetsin replied to Benjamin Prez's topic in Insurance & Financing
I assume you mean through your military benefits, and not civilian? If so, Tricare started covering the sleeve effective 2010. I'm not sure what their current requirements are for surgery or for revision, but I know that in 2010 my father had to have his lap-band removed and wanted a revision to a sleeve but it was denied. I'm pretty sure they do require a 6 month supervised diet. There are some MTFs that perform the surgery but I have no idea which. Try searching "tricare" here and you will find some good information. Anyone have gastric sleeve years after having your band removed?
EagerPenguin replied to kyotosong's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That is great! It shows dedication to a healthier lifestyle. It'll be good to have a tool (the sleeve) to help keep that off. Your appetite may or may not decrease after sleeve surgery. Mine is still there, but I've read of other who aren't hungry at all for up to a year. I've read that you can expect to lose about 60% of your excess weight with the sleeve, but some have lost more and actually achieved a normal BMI. I've been having some trouble with the diet; I didn't expect it to be this difficult to tolerate. I'm so sick of liquids, of protein shakes, and now of pureed textures. I want something crunchy, a cucumber with greek yogurt ranch dip perhaps. I'll get to regular foods eventually, but the wait is a lot longer in my mind than I was expecting. My weight loss has also been slow so far. I was sleeved on 12/7/17 and have lost about 12 pounds since then, which seems low. I suspect it's due to my medications, because there's no way it's due to excessive caloric intake. And it turns out that the timing is harder than I anticipated. Having the surgery before the holidays has been really hard. I was having a little bit of regret at first, when I was more bummed out about these issues, but I don't regret the surgery at all. I think it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. I totally feel a difference from the band. I had a more difficult recovery with the sleeve than the band (a week of mild nausea, stomach cramps), and as I wrote about above, the inital diet is typically long and in my opinion sucks, but it'll be worth it. So far, instead of my food getting stuck at the top of my stomach, it slowly makes its way to the bottom until I feel satisfied. You still have to eat slowly, and take small bites and chew chew chew, but I've not had any regurgitation, "stuck" foods, or "slime-ing", even now that I've started puree. Also, NOT HAVING A PORT. That's glorious. I hated the thing. It flipped on me shortly after placement, so I had to have another surgery to fix it, the fills were painful, and it was plain uncomfortable under my skin. The sleeve is like night and day from the band. It's becoming very common to revise from the band to sleeve. Best wishes as you make your decision. -

Starting To Freak Out...would Love Some Reassurance
JenC replied to TaiDyed's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 11 days and 14lbs post op and feeling great! I can't believe how fast and what a breeze the surgery was! I did not do a revision so a litte different situation in that respect but any of the questions or anxiety I may have felt before is behind me and I'm so excited for my future! You came to the decision for many reasons and with a clear head I'm sure, before the anxiety of the "moments" before set in. You can do this! Get your desk cleared and your stuff done so you can focus on YOU during the time you've taken off for recovery. Luck to you!! :) -
I have the same insurance. They didn't require a 6 months waiting period. I was approved very quickly for both the Lap Band surgery, and the revision to the sleeve 12 month later (I got approved for revision t 192 lbs). The only things required were a nutritionist consultant, a chest x-ray, and phsyc consult, and blood work. Both times I had my surgery date 4 to 5 weeks after submission. Oh and I also had to write a letter about my dieting history, medical history, and family weight and medical history. Best of luck!

I had an extended tummy tuck back in 2011 and I've been thrilled with the results as well. I had lost 90 pounds prior to the procedure and I have since regained 80 of that. My tummy is still flat and the muscle repair has held up amazingly well. I'm hoping that after I am sleeved and re-lose the weight, I won't need any sort of revision.

Does your insurance only allow 1 WLS?
hockeyfan7 replied to judyoz's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Mine said it only covered one WLS, but I just had a revision from the band to the sleeve 3 weeks ago and they covered it. My surgeon listed it as complications due to band failure and I only had to pay my maximum out of pocket for my insurance. -
I hadn’t heard of it either & it wasn’t an option with my surgeon. Is it a Sydney thing?? I wonder if stomach stretching after sleeve was either an old wives tale or to scare patients to encourage them to eat correctly (portion size, frequency, etc.) so that wouldn’t happen. I do recall Dr Nowzaradan operating again on one of his patients saying they had stretched their tummy again but they had been eating exactly the same way as they always had: huge portions, many times a day every day for a long time. So they deliberately worked to stretch it again. No surgery would have helped them. As others have said it sounds similar to lapband (gastric banding) which are not performed as often because of higher risk of complications. There are a lot of people here who have had to have a revision to sleeve or more commonly to bypass because of issues with their band. On googling I noticed that some weight loss clinics don’t identify the possible side effects of the minimiser but did discover one (Perth) clinic that did: … placing a ring around the top of the sleeve can cause obstructive symptoms much like adjustable gastric banding resulting in difficulty swallowing and food intolerance. It can cause dilatation of the top of the sleeve which we consider to be the most critical part. It may also increase the risk of reflux, volume regurgitation and possible aspiration. But if you’ve done your research, weighed the pros & cons, and you know yourself & your challenges with eating best, & your surgeon supports you, it is ultimately your decision. All the best.

Hello everyone :-) this is my first post so hope u all can see it. I had lap band surgery 9/2009, and will be having a revision to RNY Sept 30, 2014. I am at my all time highest weight now of 386, and pray this surgery will give me the tools to be a healthier person. I had testing in July of this year that showed my band had slipped up, causing a stricture at the base of my esophagus, who knows how long it's been that way. I will be having my surgery at St. Vincent Carmel with Dr. Christopher Evanson, who is planning to remove the band and complete the RNY. I enjoy reading everyone's posts.. Love & Prayers of success to everyone -

Hi Polly, I hope all goes well with your appointment and you and your PA can decide your best option. I am currently waiting on approval for lapband to RNY revision surgery. My Surgeon suggested RNY for me due to all my GERD issues. I went in wanting the sleeve, but he said with all the reflux and aspirating I was having, RNY would be better for me. My insurance advocate had put in for a surgery date of October 14th, to allow time for insurance company to review my info and give an answer, but I am hoping to get it changed to an earlier date. I was told by my insurance company that if a later date is placed on the paperwork, they would review it at a later time because it isn't a priority, but if it is put in for like a couple of weeks before a projected date, they would get to it faster. I am so ready to get rid of this band and get back on track with my weight loss. I hate that I have gained about 40lbs back since the start of my problems two years ago, but I am not giving up on that healthy life I sought after. Good luck to you!!!!!! And everyone else -
Hello All, It has been quite a while since I've been on here. I'm currently not too happy with the way my band makes me feel which is why I'm seeking a revision. I''m going to speak with my surgeon about the issues I'm having and was wondering if you all have any advice for me as far as going from the band to sleeve? What has been your experience and are you happy with your decision? What made you choose to revise? Any feedback both positive and negative is ok. Thank you all in advance and good luck to those who have surgeries coming up. Lala
