MY STORY-getting and losing my band

Sorry this all happened to you. A few things I do not understand, how could you go so long without ANY fluids and not die? You are quite lucky. Also, they sent you home septic? How did you survive that? There are several that have had severe infections. Might want to look up TJWood, he just had surgery last week for the 2nd time to remove pockets of pus from his abdomin. Steve is correct, there was another person here that said her doc told her she was rejecting the band because she was infected. That isn't rejection, that is infection. I feel for you, I lost my band too but for very different reasons. I self paid for the band and then self paid for a revision to a sleeve. That might be a better option for you once you are fully healed and back to the life of the living.
  3. I spoke to the doc's insurance person last Tuesday - so assuming she sent in my information by Wednesday - I was approved on Friday -- and she called me this morning! 3 days = surreal. 1st available surgery date is Aug 31st -- however I am scheduled to go to a conference (in Vegas) the week of 9/13-15 -- is that doable??? (not worried about not being able to eat, as I can back my Protein drinks and instant Soup.) OR should I ask for a date after the conference? WOW Donna Metro DC area Banded 7/07 and soon to be Sleeved !!

    Scared

Wow. I'm sorry to hear about your aunt. of course you are scared it's perfectly normal. I had revision surgery too from lapband to the sleeve. I also have my gallbladder removed and a hernia repaired the same day. And like you I get very sick from the anesthesia. I told the anesthesiologist about how badly I react and they gave me medicine through an IV and also a patch behind my ear that helped immensely. I won't lie the first couple of days were rough but by day three I was sitting out at my son's baseball game and on day 4 I was back at my desk job. I'm losing weight better and feel so much healthier than I ever did with my band because I can eat real food and I don't feel hungry all the time. It's nice not to be throwing up all the time of course 2. I just wanted to share that with you good luck in making a decision.
  5. Hey! I just realized we had the same surgeon! Crazy! Did you go through the weight control center at Beaumont? If so, the soft foods list should definitely have been in your binder. If not, it was left out somehow and they should be able to give it to you. I also find the NUTS there very accessible if you have questions. I was just giving the disclaimer because I don't have my list in front of me, my memory isn't all that great, and I was advanced slightly differently through the phases because I am a lap band revision.
  6. So, I recieved a recieved a sugery date of 12/08/2022. Revision due to an ulcer, GERD, hernias and esophagus damage. I should be happy! However, I am just scared! Help!!!! Sent from my SM-G996U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  7. I live in Plano and am scheduled to have the band to sleeve revision on 11-8-09. I'm excited to get the band out as I never lost any weight with it. Dr. Jayaseelan is doing my surgery. He did the original band surgery along with gall stone & hiatel hernia repair.
  8. I enjoyed meeting both of you as well. It's nice to put real faces with names. My husband feels so much better about the whole process and surgery after attending with me last night. Since I am self-pay and a revision, I have a consult with Dr. Nick tomorrow afternoon. I will let you know how it goes. He said last night he thinks I should do this in 2 surgeries, one to remove the band and let the stomach heal and then do the sleeve later. That makes the most since, but of course will not happen as fast as I want it to. Anna
  9. Ok so here is my story, I originally had gastric bypass Jan 7 2007, I weighed 292 and 4 years later I had my first esophagus stricture due to a stomach ulcer, my weight was normal and other than my stricture I was able to eat anything I wanted, I recovered from the ulcer an stricture and went on as normal until last year 28th Feb I had another ulcer which caused a small bowel stricture, doctor took me in for surgery to remove the ulcer, I weighed 161 lbs day of surgery, an when I awoke from anesthetic the doctor said he noticed my pouch was stretched out and revised it for me, since then I am barely a 100lbs and everything I eat including soup hurts and causes gases burping and vomiting, I throw up at least 2 times a day from attempting to eat, ...I just want to go back to normal, ...how can a doctor revise my surgery without consent?

    June 2019!!! Surgery Siblings!!!

I got my approval today and my surgery date is June 3 and I am so excited. I wanted a May date but oh well at least I got an approval. I was sleeved in 2015 however it was unsuccessful. I am determined for this bypass to work. I wanted the bypass the first time but the surgeon suggested the sleeve. This is the last and final time can’t get another revision after this but I wouldn’t one another one.
  12. I'm so sorry you had to have your band removed and dealing with the hunger again. Since having my band put in I've dealt with constant pain in my left shoulder (phrenic nerve pain) and after 15 months, I just can't deal with it anymore. They're taking my band out within the next few weeks (I hope) and, while my insurance will cover the revision to a sleeve since the band is being removed due to complications, I'm not sure I want to do that. Like you, though, without the band I don't know if I'll be able to deal with the hunger. .

    Round 1 million 1

Is your revision from sleeve to bypass? Don't worry, for what I hear and read on here the recovery is almost identical. In addition, the pre-op and post-op diets are just about the same too. I had bypass. 10 day limited pre-op diet. Post-op was 2 weeks clear/full liquids, 2 weeks pureed foods, 2 weeks soft foods and then slowly transition back to a normal diet. Take it slow, test new foods 1 at a time so if you get sick you know exactly what caused it. You got this!

    6 months on

Hey Linny Yes I feel fantastic. I went to Thialand a month ago and did not need the seat belt extention on the plane and that was a fantastic feeling. Also my hubby says he cannot believe the difference in me. I was climbing up and down stairs and getting into junkets in the middle of bangkok of which I would never have done in the past I feel fantastic and cannot wait to get another 30kg off. Leah I agree Yay us I was a size 26 and struggling and am getting into a 20 or 18 now The difference if unbeleivble and this is the best thing I have ever done. My goal was to get into a size 18 that has now been revised to a 14 for now....
  15. How are you doing after the revision?

    June 2019!!! Surgery Siblings!!!

Hi June friends. I was revised VSG to RnY (related to GERD) on 6/4. I spent two nights in the hospital, due to poor intake and output. I’ve been home just over a day now and I’m doing well. Focusing on water, I am not tolerating protein shakes, I did find a couple things that I am tolerating today so finally had some intake. Pain has been minimal, I am Just exhausted. Excited for this next journey. I had about a 75# loss with VSG, and kept it off over 5 years, but was still 50# from original goal.
  18. Ok hi ladies. I was banded in March of 2005. The good news is that I had, at one time, lost from 285lbs down to 150lbs. However, I got to that 150lbs because I was starving. In early 2006 after I got be around 170lbs, my band slipped and I could not eat for two weeks. I could'nt even keep water down so I had revision surgery and they fixed the slip. Since then I was so scared to get a fill so I went without one for almost a year. By this time I had gained back up to 180lbs. Gradually I started getting fills until I now, and I have 3.1 in a 4cc band. I have not had any restriction whatsoever since my last surgery. Each fill feals the same. My doctor seems to think that I am just not following the band rules and by the way I feel like a failure because I am now up to 225lbs! Omg back over 200lbs! I know this isnt as high as before and I know I can lose it but I just need my band to help me out. I know I have to work hard and I am ready to do that. I admit I have made many mistakes but I do need that little bit of help from the band to let me know I am full. My doctor won't put anymore in my band until I take a nutrition class and have an upper GI to see if it slipped again due to my history. It doesnt feel like a slip because the first time It slipped I couldnt even eat and now I can eat anything I want....I mean ANYTHING! I know just because I can, doesnt mean I should but why the hell did I get this band if it isn't going to give me some help? Ya know? Anyway, I lost 135lbs once before so I know I can lose 60lbs, I just hope it hasn't slipped again. Could it be that my pouch has stretched over time and I just need to shrink it? I was thinking maybe if I went on a liquid diet for a week or so that it might help shrink it if indeed that is the case. Anyone have any suggestions? My upper GI should be scheduled soon and I am just waiting on the DR to call me. I am on my second day of liquids and I just figured that at least this might jumpstart my weightloss....if anything.

    Bruising

I had minimal bruising after my revision, and the leak repair which all happened within 48 hours of each other. I have more scars because I was a revision patient. But, 8 months out, my scars are light pink, no biggie. No one sees me naked other than my husband so it really doesn't bother me. In my opion (and that's all it is), all of the temporary discomfort, bruising and healing time is just that temporary. In the long run, all that becomes an afterthought. At least that has been my experience.
  20. By all means, make the lifestyle changes, as they will be essential to your long term weight stability and well being, even if they aren't likely to get your weight down to where you want it to be - once we get to the size where we are considering WLS. there are enough various factors stacked against us that we run into that 5% success rate noted above. The way I approached this problem, when my wife and I got serious about our respective weight problems and started toward WLS was to start doing those lifestyle changes that would help to ensure my long term success. We know what we have to do - be more active (it seems like you already have that inclination), cut the junk out of our diets, improve the overall nutrition while reducing the calories to a level that will maintain us (if not leading to total weight loss to normal.) Most have already found that the various fad and "book" diets (any book entitled "The _____ Diet", most particularly if it also mentions "miracle" and is authored by a "Dr.") don't work in the long term. They may get your weight down to something approaching normal, but they teach you nothing about how to maintain that loss over the years, and the weight builds up again when trying to go back to a "normalish" maintenance diet. I avoided those diets, but worked on moving my diet as close to the ideal as I could sustain in the long term. It was not "perfect" by any book or nutritionists' standards, but it was what I could do within my tastes and it was something that I could do forever, and it was much better than the normal American crap diet that got most of us where we are/were when considering WLS. I kept tweaking things to carve out a few more calories where I could, and improve the overall nutrition of what I ate. That was almost 13 years ago, and I dropped about 50 lb over six months (335 - 285) or so and came to a halt. I could make small moves down and then back again. But I did maintain that loss for several years. In the meantime, my wife had her WLS after the serial insurance denials and ultimately self paying for her DS, and we settled into a reasonable maintenance lifestyle, though I usually ate about twice what she did. Once our insurance started covering the sleeve, I went for it as it was clear that I was not going to lose the rest on my own in any sustainable manner. That was five years ago, and so far so good. I also used that interim period to test my maintenance ability and help choose which surgery, if needed, was most appropriate for me. Had I regained what I had lost over those few years, that was a sign that I should go for the DS, with its better regain resistance. With the stability that I had managed over that time, the sleeve seemed like a good bet that I could avoid any revisions due to regain problems.
  21. I self paid for my band and so I was devastated when it slipped and broke apart. I had a revision and I am so glad I did. I understand your concerns about money. I felt guilty spending all this money on surgeries that could have gone to other things (like a bigger house that we really need). I decided that my health was important. We spend money on cars, vacations, and all sorts of other things. Don't feel guilty. You are worth it! HUGS.

    Pondering the sleeve

Great to see such positive responses; thank you all! After 2 LB friends have successfully revised to a sleeve, I am more and more interested in revising! Hate my band! Do sleevers PB like banders do? Man that's horrible!
  23. Hey guys, I'll be going next Thursday for a revision to gastric bypass due to reflux, and I'm also having my gallbladder removed. Has anyone had the revision from Sleeve to bypass for reflux? How was it afterwards? Did you have to start your diet stages all over again? And also even though it's not for a weight loss reason, will you still lose weight ?
  24. I'm very newly revised so im curious to hear others experiences as well Good Luck 💜
  25. Well... I'm a band to rny revision. I had my band for 2 yrs 2 months and 25 days. It was 2 yrs, 2 months and 25 days to long. I'm not negative about the band in general, just my band and body did NOT get along. I went into the RNY at 260 pounds, and am down officially to 189. That's HUGE for me. I was like 13 or 14 when I was last this low, and I hit 40 just a few weeks post op. It's awesome. Teri
