    January 2025 Surgery Buddies!

    I am doing well thank you! On purees now, which is great after weeks of liquid, feeling good, learning my limits and healing nicely! I have not lost a lot of weight for a week, but am taking that in my stride, desperately close to.my first mini goal, but not quite there yet! Overall going very well, I can see the differences already, clothes are starting to hang off me! 😁 Thanks for asking, how are you doing?
  2. Update: healing well. Started scar laser therapy last week. Still in compression but I got a cute short sleeve dress I can't wait to wear on my summer vacation. I will probably be in compression for the rest of the summer just because the swelling gets so crazy in the extreme heat where I live. I am excited and loving the results so far. It feels so great to not feel my arms shake and move around while doing things daily. Going down stairs, running, stirring while cooking, all feels different. Also I am a violinist and I no longer feel my arms shake and move while I play. I am so happy about that.
  3. So my EGD found inflammation. I start a zole drug tomorrow for 8 weeks to see if that help, but since I’m not an optimist. I’m trying to figure out what my choices are if I have a stomach acid problem. I have been not interested in RYGB. But if I have an acid problem I thinks my surgeon won’t do SG. So I’m not sure if any thing is left if this doesn’t resolve.
  4. I definitely had some burning in and around my incision the first week when changing certain positions. It goes away, but please check with your surgeon.
  5. You are not alone. And regain can be very stressful and emotional. Many experience regain over time of varying amounts. I’ve had a small regain this year able it has been very upsetting. Many things can contribute to this regain. Life in general, which can throw crap at us. Medical reasons. Emotional or mental health issues. Complacency. From what you said it seems like complacency maybe a factor for you. Unlike @learn2cook, I’m not a tracker of my food. I’m a random checker though like @learn2cook I’m also very routine and predictable in my eating (what I eat & when I eat) but it is what works for me. You may find it useful to measure and record everything I eat & drink for a couple of weeks to identify where those snacks, larger portions, calorie drinks or whatever are sneaking in. Can help to make note of why you think you snacked, or ate a little larger portion, and such too. Look over what you’ve recorded and then start to make changes. Just one or two at a time for a couple of weeks then make another change or two. Slow and steady adjustments are always easier to adopt and adapt to & are more sustainable in the long term. Checking in with a dietician can also be helpful to ensure you’re on the right path. If you think there may be an emotional factor involved, a therapist may be able to support you too. Many find a therapist very helpful. Unfortunately, managing our weight will always be a battle to some degree we just have some extra tools and knowledge to help us now than we did before our surgery. All the best.

    I know how you feel- I am doing a DietBet (it’s an app) I figure if I have money in the game ( you pay into a pool, all who meet their goal get a share of the pot ( which is the pool of money paid in minus commission from the app) I am doing a Lose 4% of your body weight in 4 weeks i figure it’s a good reset motivator if nothing else

    Stressing about eating too much

    I am not to goal yet but I can tell you that as long as I keep my protein high i seem to lose weight independent of actual calorie goal. I am 6 months out and am shooting for 130 grams of protein and somewhere around 1500 calories. Continuing to lose a couple lbs a week even though it’s not terribly linear lol.

    NHS Tier 4 Dietitian Consultation

    Hi, NeonRaven! Thank you so much for your reply and sharing your experience! I find it so helpful to hear how other NHsers have experienced the process since it seems so much more elongated from the U.S. process. And you make such a good point about the London privilege - now it makes more sense why I’ve seen more internet presence and response from London NHSers. (And quite a few from the far north of England as well!) About three or four years ago during my annual diabetic review, my nurse had suggested bariatric surgery and that gave me a lot of hope - she was able to refer me for Tier 3. I had my dietitian appointment yesterday and it went really well! It was about 30 minutes and went over the Tier 3 lifestyle changes, continued lifestyle changes (balanced meals, regular exercise, blood sugar monitoring, weight maintenance, etc), medications, and then any questions I might have. She was very positive and said she would be recommending me to go forward for surgery when the MDT meeting happens 🥲 (once I meet with the next consultants - psychologist, anaesthetist, bariatric nurse, and surgeon - how soon? No one knows.) Needless to say, I am so relieved, so happy, and so excited to be moving forward even if it’s one step. I’ve found out that my hospital trust now does their “one-stop” clinic as separate virtual appointments, rather than in-person. (So, perhaps it will be quite some time before that MDT meeting?) And then the endoscopy and ECG will be done at the pre-op assessment once a surgery date is confirmed. I am so glad to hear your NHS experience has been so good and positive. I am so sorry to hear about your mother's complication and her passing, but it is so hopeful to hear she was able to put her diabetes into remission (that’s one of my big hopes!) Congratulations on your weight loss and wishing all the health and success! 💕 PS - funny enough, I have not had any group sessions whatsoever in this process. I am wondering if I’ll have a group session with the bariatric nurse?

    January 2025 Surgery Buddies!

    Finally hit over protein for first time in 5 weeks. I’ve not lost any weight in over 10 days. I’m eating around 500/600 calories a day in total since 27th January . I’ve lost around 10kgs since surgery should I be worried x
  10. Wasn't sure if now was the best time to make this, but I see others making this kind of thread the month before their surgery date so I thought why not! It feels surreal even saying I am having surgery next month! Mine is booked on for 14/05/24 - who else will be having theirs in May? A few questions just to get us started: 1) Are you nervous about anything? If so, what? - just in the hope that any veterans can give advice or if we can help each other. Anxiety is normal! 2) What have you prepared/plan to prepare for your hospital bag? 3) What are you most excited about? I look forward to hearing from you all ❤️
  11. Hello, hello! This is my first post here and after searching for this topic, not much came up for me, so here I am! 🙂 I was wondering if anyone here could share their experience going through the NHS Tier 4 appointments, particularly this first meeting with the bariatric dietitian? I'm assuming each trust probably has their own system of doing Tier 4, but for me, this is my first Tier 4 appointment and it’s a video call. After this appointment, if all goes well, I will (eventually 🤞) progress onwards to the in-person-at-the-hospital “one-stop clinic” to meet with the bariatric nurse, anaesthetist, psychologist, and surgeon. I was successfully discharged from Tier 3 in Dec 2023 and have since been waiting for a Tier 4 appointment - the time has finally come! 🥳 Needless to say, I’m both excited and nervous - and happy to receive any words of advice or wisdom anyone can offer. Also, for what it’s worth, I’m under the Portsmouth NHS trust (Queen Alexandra) and hoping for either the OAGB or RNY. Anyone have any experience with the QA bariatric team? Thanks in advance!

    Liver shrinking diet pre -op?

    I had to do the liver shrinking diet pre-op for 2 weeks. 2 shakes a day then I ate a bag of frozen stir fry vegetables with 3 ounces of lean chicken or beef season fried in soy sauce for my evening meal. It was delish. I lost weight. High volume, low calorie. I'd enjoy the food while you can. JS

  14. I want to know what people's experiences are of their eating habits post surgery. For example, does everyone experience problems with finishing a plate of food or a takeaway meal? I've been experiencing problems with volume of food that I can eat post surgery. I also experience constipation, something I've never struggled with in the past. The thing I hate is that my food gets cold when I'm trying to make my way through it, even though I'm eating slowly and chewing well. It's so frustrating. I also fear having to eat in public or in front of those that do not know I have had surgery.
  15. Hi guys, I'm feeling a bit low so I thought I would reach out, everyone seems so friendly here. I had sleeve surgery nearly 6 weeks ago and one of the surgical sites just wont heal. They were all fine, scabbed over and looking great until two weeks ago when they starting weeping. When this happened I covered them up with an antiseptic cream and saw the doctor who prescribed antibiotics for an infection I had. The scab came off on one of them along with the stitches leaving a sizeable hole which scared me to death! Now this hole won't seem to heal. It is about as 1cm deep and 1.5 cm wide. The nurse is packing and dressing it twice a week, but it's really getting me down. I am type 2 diabetic so I know that alone indicates slow healing but my glucose levels are right down now since the surgery which is great. Has anyone else had problems of this nature? It's really getting me down and it makes me feel queasy when I have to have it changed.
  16. dinner last night: i have a bad habit of ordering more food that i can eat which is both a blessing and a curse for Mr., who always gets tasked to dealing with my leftovers. i don't have an after pic, cuz yeah, he ate it all before i could (plus he ate all of his dinner too omg.). i have no proof, but i believe i ate 2 broccoli florets. 2 or 3 forkfuls of of the sauteed onions, 4-5 potato squares, 1 forkful of corn, and maybe 1/4 of that ribeye. i ate from the left side which was the fattier part...soooo yum.     Hitting my first stall?

    I feel you on the going backwards thing, honestly, I'm at a point where I'm like, I should just start selling feet pics haha, kidding I will work on rewriting my budget and not buy as many protein drinks, the money for the drinks will be used for more solid pick, my friend has a Costco membership, and said she'd take me, I can buy some frozen foods in bulk to keep frozen for easy meals, I will see what recipes I can do and hopefully after a few weeks, I will be in a much better spot, thanks for the food ideas

    1 Year Post-op 🎉🎉

    HOLY ISH! A year already?! Time has flown! I still remember the beginning of your journey and those first posts—wow, you've come so far and done so incredibly well! I'm seriously so proud of you!! I totally agree with @SpartanMaker—maintenance is no joke, and exercise really does make all the difference. Weight lifting has been key for me too. It helps so much with maintaining, even more than cardio sometimes. Build that muscle and you're burning calories just by existing. Cardio is still super important,! I’m still figuring out maintenance myself, but my workouts have been consistent and even through my 2month spat of not being able to get my nutrition in control, making sure I kept up with exercise has been key I have been consistently doing this and its been great: 35–45 minutes of strength training, 5 days a week, At least 30 minutes of cardio daily (treadmill, dog walks, biking—whatever tickles my fancy), 2 lower body days, 2 upper body, 1 full body and one day a week my doggy and I do a 5-mile walk (she gets a walk every day, but that’s our long one). You’ve been so fabulous through this whole process, and I can’t wait to hear about your continued journey!

    So excited!

    @Mspretty86 I JUST got the okay to do upper body Friday- no isolated chest workouts which is fine with me, I have been wanting to workout my back and shoulders. I have been working my biceps and triceps for a few weeks but you can only do so much with that- Still no running or anything that requires bouncing. So HIIT workouts are off limits to an extent. But I am able to wear regular bras now, but need to wear my post op bra at night and during my workouts.

    Trying this high protein, lower sugar cereal that’s supposed resemble Cheerios. Served myself 1/3 cup with 1/3 skim milk. It was okay but way too sweet for my liking.

    One-derland! Finally

    Today, I'm officially under 200lbs! only by half a lb but I'm counting it! I did a little weight conversion and had to remeasure due to disbelief! After gaining and losing the same kilo for the last three weeks, I'm so happy!

    August Surgery buddies

    Went to the clinic today n I'm back on the bill but like 3 times a week. Sigh .. maybe it was too soon going off it
  24. My surgery-induced hair loss has only just started to turn around, so I know what you are going through and how distressing it can be. I have done two things to help. One is using minoxidil every night before bed. I found a 3-pack on Amazon of a spray (not a foam, which I find too messy) that is so easy to use and costs under $40. For a woman's dose (4 squirts per day), each bottle is supposed to last 60 days. I find it doesn't last quite that long, but I probably get about 6 weeks out of each bottle, making it cost maybe $2.50 a week. I've been using it about 14 weeks and I am seeing tons of regrowth, I would say definitely beyond what I lost. The hair is all short right now, a couple inches in length, but by the summer I hope it will be closer to my above the shoulder hair length. Which beings me to my second trick: hats. I live in a cold weather climate and I bought a bunch of hats, although I had some wide fabric headbands and crocheted bandanas in the fall when it was warmer that also got the job done. Not sure if you are male or female, but for women's styles, try searching for either "slouch caps" or "chemo headwear" online for some lighter weight hats that can help you hide the thinning until it reverses and that are comfortable indoors. Once your weight loss slows, the hair should regrow even on a maintenance dose of Zepbound. It just takes time, way longer than you think! Oh, I should say I had my surgery in Feb 2024, so in terms of when my major weight loss was happening, I'm betting we're at kind of the same stage with the hair loss. And I'm almost 51, so ditto on the age-related issues. But the minoxidil is a game changer.
  25. Today's win ? Returned to weight lifting after what seems like a 200 year hiatus. 🤣 Nothing extreme or crazy....very light weights with lots of reps. Injury avoidance is key concern. Other win is the overall feeling like I have things dialed in and the cruise control is activated. The positive feels from this are so welcome. The last 6 years or more have been chaotic and hellish at times. Things are slowing down and falling into place. Sure the scale is giving lower numbers every week, but the real improvement has been with the pure simplicity of returning to the initial advisements of the professionals at my bariatric center.
