    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

So happy to hear you are rescheduled!! I just started to look at food/shake combinations that will keep me below 50 gm of carbs per day. I am allowed either shakes or lean meat and veggies for my 4 meal per day. I think I am going to do shakes for breakfast and lunch. A protein water and yogurt for a snack and then meat and veggies for dinner. Most of the days I planned out came to 750 calories, 40 g carbs, 95 g protein, and 20 g fat. My diet is to be high protein, low fat, low carb, low calorie for 2 weeks. Since I could just drink shakes 4 times per day for 2 weeks if I wanted (which I don't), I used that as a guide for my macros and calories goals (max 1000 calories, 80-120 g protein, 50 g carbs, 24 g fat). Its going to be tough and monotonous but its only for 2 weeks...right?

    Weight gain

While it could be the pill, I would also try tracking your food in MyFitnessPal or something similar, just to see how many calories you are really eating. It's really easy to have "calorie creep" and eat more if you are not weighing or measuring your food. I hope you find an answer soon!
  4. Last night’s dinner: Sweet n spicy BBQ pork and Buffalo Cauliflower. I had one pork medallion and a couple cauliflower florets: 134 calories. P.S. As an aside, since we’ve been doing a “Dry February”, i find I’ve been eating much less. I wonder if alcohol consumption is somehow tied to food consumption?? And as a bonus, i also notice i’ve been sleeping much better (like longer and more soundly…go figure).

    Weight gain

Stalls are plateaus but they don't make you gain weight. Over what period have time have you gained this weight? If it's over a month, that's concerning, if it's over a year it's just excess calories. I searched online about weight gain and birth control pills and read: Weight gain is a common birth control pill side effect. Certain oral contraceptives are more likely than others to increase the pounds. Fortunately, the weight gain is often due to temporary water retention and will go away in a few months. Water retention is a typical symptom of premenstrual syndrome that is caused by fluctuating hormone levels. You’ve probably noticed it before—about a week or two before your period starts you start to feel bloated and your clothes are a little too tight. Estrogen-containing birth control pills have the same effect. The most widely used type of birth control pill contains two types of synthetic female hormones—estrogen and progestin—that prevent your body from releasing an egg. It is the estrogen part of the pill that can cause you to retain water, which may make you feel like you’ve gained weight. Water retention usually passes after you’ve been taking the pill for a few months.

    Surgeon's advice after vomiting

I don't think I've given anyone reason to believe I am not fully aware of what the 2-week pre-op phase is intended for. This can be achieved by any calorie deficit, does not require a liquid diet, and you need only to be in immediate caloric deficit for a short time for the liver to shrink. Like I said, great that it worked for you. I have absolutely no motivation not to lift you up. But ceteris paribus, fewer people will get life-saving bariatric surgery if put on a months-long diet to qualify. The surgery is designed to help that diet work. We don't require ACL patients to go to physio 3x week for six months to qualify for ACL replacement.
  7. Yep, sometimes i eat chips. 140 calories. Ate it all.

Over 2 mo po and stalled

I lost such a lot of weight really quickly because of vomiting and my calorie intake was very low. About 200 to 300 cals a day. I couldnt make any protein or water goals. So I had a 5 week stall. Its frustrating. Now I am eating more calories and much more protein and reach my water quota, things are moving downwards again.

    Food Before and After Photos

This is my first time posting in this thread. Surgery almost 5 months ago. Today I used about 100g of egg product and 28g of reduced fat cheddar cheese plus a little salt (trying to get my blood pressure up since I'm dizzy all the time, but I don't like salt much). I ate about half. 60 calories, 9 g protein for the half I ate. Also, this is my favorite plate. Orange is my favorite color and I love the geometric pattern. It's a "salad" plate, although it seems almost a dinner size plate to me. I never use the larger size anymore.
  10. Yes, swimming does make me hungry too, but it doesn't burn as many calories as you might think. The estimates given are based on weight, but your weight doesn't cause you to exert much extra energy in the pool, so they are overestimated that way. Plus, because these calorie estimates are always way too high, that's more than the usual amount of "bonus" calories it says your burning vs what you actually are. I do agree that having a plan for what to eat post-swimming is much better than just grabbing anything. Did the psychologist say she wouldn't approve you for surgery? I would just smile and nod and say you agree with her. Normally, I say to take these psychologist evaluations seriously, but it sounds like this might be an exception. I hope you are able to get your surgery! I haven't gone back to swimming since my surgery, even though I can. I just keep making excuses, so good for you!

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Surprisingly in the last week or so I've lost more weight and I've been less careful about what I eat in terms of counting calories. Maybe I was having too little?
  12. Thank you everyone. I agreed to listen to the drs and Nutritionist. My biggest concern with the psych that this would be the reason she would not clear me. She has seemed to steep in the role of a nutritionist. I almost wanted to switch therapist The reason why is because swimming burns a lot of calories. I’m not just floating or gentle swimming, I am either treading water or doing aerobics. The faster I go the more resistance I have. And it’s not just I want something to eat, it is hunger. I can try to drink water, but it’s almost like I begin to feel faint or sick like from nit eating. So then I just grab anything. If I know it is there I can have a plan to make sure it’s healthy, or sit the protein a side before it gets that bad.
  13. I agree with listening to the medical personnel. However, ask them WHY they are giving you these directions. Once you have surgery, you need to be aware that "grazing" (unplanned snacking, eating too frequently) can cause you to not loose much or regain your weight, because you're constantly re-filing your stomach as soon as there's room, and usually with not healthy food. Also, most people think exercise burns a lot more calories than it does (most calorie counters are completely wrong on how many calories you will burn and overestimate it), so eating because you've exercised is not always the right response. but... you will never last in your life long journey if you ignore your hunger. I never lost my hunger after surgery and had to eat 5-6 times a day because I could only eat a little at once. I agree that you should tell the doc/pa/nutritionist that not everyone is on the same page!

    Some questions

Any WLS will work if you learn to use it properly. Obviously, the lap-band had some inherent issues, so I'm NOT AT ALL blaming you for the regain there. But as far as surgical WLS options go, they are guaranteed to create a calorie deficit to induce weight loss. BUT - and its a big but - you have to be ready and willing to commit to the life long changes necessary to be truly successful. I am almost 5 months post-op and have lost nearly 70lbs. I'm VERY happy with my progress so far, but its not easy. Every single day I have to hit my protein, drink my fluids, take my vitamins, move my body and make a million other decisions to prioritize my health and stay on track. That being said, I would do it again in a heartbeat. My only regret is not having done it sooner. I also went the self-pay route via Mexico and was 100% satisfied with the experience. Ultimately, only YOU can decide what's right for YOU. Do your homework, really dig in to learn what it would entail for you, and then decide.
  15. Friend dropped off Montreal Bagels direct from Montreal this morning! So of course we had to eat them. Ate 1/2 a bagel with mounds of garlic cream cheese and some pistachios: 300 calories.

    Food Before and After Photos

Now onto the various workdays (I pack all my day’s calories for workdays) I’ve packed and didn’t post. Various items included in different meals included- barbecue jackfruit, drunken red cabbage (red cabbage braised in butter, shallot, red wine, orange juice with dried cranberries and raisins), some chipotle baked beans, broccoli slaw, pickled radishes, creamy cucumber salad, a mock mushroom and spinach risotto (made with minute rice), a red lentil curry, and who knows what else.

    Work Accommodations

I think it depends on your work environment and the requirements of your position. If your office or work environment is strict about when you can eat or drink, that would be something to consider. For me, I have to eat 3 meals plus 2-3 snacks to get all my calories in (I'm 6 months out) and I need to drink throughout the day. This wouldn't be an issue at my office, but for some people it could be a problem. Otherwise, it wouldn't have affected anything.
  20. Score! Turns out the boys didn’t eat all of yesterday’s brunch leftovers after all and I split what I found in the fridge with Mr. I got: 1/4 of a salmon egg benny, 1 breakfast sausage, a bit of melons, about 1/2 a cup of leftover thai beef curry from last night, and a spoonful of pickled onions leftover from i don’t know when, lol. Oh and an Almond Roca chocolate candy (for those that haven’t had an Almond Roca, its like fatter, mini-er version of a Skor bar covered in almonds…YUM) Ate everything except the sausage (which i will eat later) and the bread of the benny and the onions (which i tossed). 324 calories for what I ate (including the sausage for later).

    Surgeon's advice after vomiting

I need to make a list of BS rules. I get the patches, since efficacy isn't guaranteed. Gummies I may get because some may contain sugar (get sugarfree ones and you're fine). I'll call it the Let's Punish Fat People for Sh*ts & Giggles List of Rules, and it'll feature Greatest Hits such as: No drinking 30 minutes before meals (because the water may simply decide to just hang around in that stomach of ours forever) No caffeine (because we snort that, it's not like the fluid it comes with outweighs the mild diuretic effect) No vitamin gummies (because god forbid the fatties have an easier time not getting malnourished, after all there may be 6 or even 7 calories in those gummies!) Six months of random unhealthy diets pre-surgery (because that liver simply won't shrink unless half the people doing pre-op give up, you see) Feel free to add more.

    Determining Goal Weight

I think some of the tension here (and on the forum in general) is between those who've accepted obesity as a complex chronic disorder comprising mental, hormonal, habitual, gastro-intestinal topographical components - and then the more common view; namely, obesity is a moral failure with a Good and a Bad side to it. Advice for the newcomers, and I mean this in the kindest way possible (but keep in mind I'm not American, so my direct manner may be abrasive): There's almost never a good reason to tell others what to do, or judge if they're right or wrong. Being pre-op and telling others what BMI they should have will make you feel embarrassed once you get to a year after surgery. Believe me. This is a journey, and man there's a lot to learn along the way. Why not listen more, especially if you're taking the first steps on a road others have traveled already with success? I'll be happy to tell the stories of some of the people in my 'batch' from late 2020, who humblebragged for weeks about how few calories they ate, how much control they were able to exert over themselves etc, who dished out condescending advice (kinda like mine here, but I earned my wings) based off of the honeymoon weeks post surgery. Well, they're not here anymore. Because it got hard. They had to re-adjust their ideas of 'Good' and 'Bad'. The drama they created stopped being reacted upon. We're all here to deal with a debilitating chronic disease. Be excellent to each other, listen, but also stand up for one another when someone is using this space to project their inner chaos onto us.

    Determining Goal Weight

By approximation in theory but in practice I don't need to. There is no weight I could be, where eating 1000 Calories per day wouldn't cause weight loss. The other problem with weighing oneself is seen on this forum which is replete with hand wringing regarding the "three week stall" and many other issues which aren't issues at all with regard to fat loss. They are scale related aberrations.

    Headache post op

Lack of calories, lack of sugar, those were my triggers, but your body gets used to it and the headaches go away.

    Post op calories

It was all I could do to get enough fluids in 3 days post op to stop getting dehydrated, so sounds like you're healing really well! My surgeon has never given me any limit to calories (nobody has ever mentioned a calorie goal to me for any stage actually!) The first few wees can be really hard - I think you're doing brilliantly.
