Frozen Berries and Smoothies Questions
Jachut replied to gnortenjones's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I do regularly make smoothies for breakfast. Its a great way to get fruit in and I find fruit almost impossible to force myself to eat these days. I've never liked the sensation on my teeth of eating it (weird, I know) and now that I have a band and fruit tends to get stuck, it nauseates me to even think of eating it. So I blend it up, usually bananas and berries. I'm not much of a breakfast eater even though I'm not unable to eat it, I just dont really want it. I find now I'm back at full time work, I risk going through the day on about 200 calories if I dont get in breakfast, so a smoothie is a great way to meet Calcium needs, fruit needs and calorie needs. I thrown in some flax seeds too for the nutrients and fibre they offer. Good, worthwhile, multipurpose food if you ask me. -
I am 2 months out from surgery and had my first fill a month ago. i don't feel alot of restriction but my calories are at 1,000 to 1,300, i work out 5 days a week, i can eat almost anything as long as it is slowly. I am losing weight slowly. but do i want my cals too much lower than that do i? i am sticking to the plan, doing the work, sometimes i am starving but after a cup of food i am full, and i make good choices 99% of the time, so should i wait on the second fill?

Hi I'm new & starting my 6mt pre-op diet this week
jensmallwood replied to Rachel T's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have a 9-year-old, too (mine's a boy, though.) My husband is doing his through his PCP-- and basically it's just the regular "move more, eat less" sort of thing. She had him move from 1500 calorie Stouffer's lasagna at lunch to a 400 calorie Lean Cuisine- that sort of thing. And she had him start on a walking program. But I'm sure that every doctor/nutritionist has their own program. My insurance wouldn't cover my surgery since they don't recognize depression as a comorbidity of obesity. So I was self-pay and didn't have to do the official 6 month diet (though of course I've been on a diet since I was about 11 years old of one kind or another.) -
PLEASE HELP! Been in Plateau for 4 months!
aliceinthegardenofpearl replied to aliceinthegardenofpearl's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I don't understand it myself and it's very frustrating to put so much effort and work into it and not see any results. It makes me break down and cry sometimes but I keep going. But I will tell you that I stick to 700-860-some calories a day. Sometimes I'll make it to 900. I write EVERYTHING that goes into my mouth in a food journal and I mean EVERYTHING. Ever since I stalled back in July I have become extremely strict with my diet and sometimes have to force myself to work out as much as I do but I get it in.You have a right to be suspicious if what I'm saying is true but let me tell you that I'm being completely honest with you and completely honest with myself. Even in the liquid phase and mushy phase of my first few months with lap band I was unable to lose weight. Back then I was eating nothing but chicken broth, cream of chicken Soup, sugar free Jello, then moved on too mushy foods such as re-fried Beans, mashed potatoes, etc and was still unable to lose a pound with that kind of diet. I kept my portions to half a cup and 1 cup. I have had my thyroid checked because my grandmother had hypothyroid as well as two of my aunts on my mother's side. My thyroid workup always comes back normal. The only thing that the doctor has told me is that I have metabolic syndrome. But a funny thing did happen one time at my doctor's office. My doctor divides his time between his private practice and the hospitals around my city and he had hired a nurse practitioner. I went one day and he wasn't there so I saw this nurse practitioner and based what I told her about not being able to lose weight she prescribed thyroid medication and I picked it up at the pharmacy and I was happy that I finally had the answer to all my weight problems, but 2 weeks later while on that medication, my doctor called all of his patients that the nurse practitioner saw during that time and asked them to come in to re-evaluate her work and he told me I wasn't even hypo thyroid according to any of my blood workups. I asked him about the nurse practitioner and he told me he had to fire her because in his absence she was diagnosing people with illnesses and conditions that they didn't even have and prescribing medications they didn't even need that could also be harmful to them. So he took me off the thyroid medication and explained my numbers to me and told me I had no thyroid problems. But maybe I should see a specialist such as an endocrinologist just in case. -
What is/was everyone's losing plan
aaa replied to mjb123's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How far out from surgery you are what percentage have you lost? Just over three and a half months out of sleeve surgery. From my day of sleeve surgery weight, I have lost 42% of my excess weight. (From highest weight, have lost 60% of my excess weight). How many times a day are you eating? Four times - I eat Breakfast, lunch, snack when I get in from work and dinner. I also drink a Protein shake and a diluted juice with flaxseeds in, but they don't really count as meals. What is the amount of normal food (non liquid) you are now able to get down? Don't know exact weights - but a typical dinner for me is around 60g of fish and a few broccoli florets topped off with some gravy. That's my biggest meal of the day and is really filling. Can't get anywhere on carbs still! What kind of supplements are you taking? Types and Brands I take a supermarket branded Multivitamin, an Iron tablet and two Calcium tablets as I'm trying to cut out dairy as much as possible. How much protein are you supposed to be getting and how much are you actually getting in daily and what are your sources of protein (brands of shakes etc), I haven't been given any set goals on protein or anything from my hospital, but I've got a self-imposed goal of at least 60 grams a day regardless. At the moment, I'm hitting around 90 grams. Main sources for me are soy milk, vegetarian soy sausages and soy bacon, flaxseeds, broccoli, a little bit of fish and houmous. I also do a Nutrisport 90+ Protein Shake (with half soy, half water) to top off the protein. How much Water you are actually getting down each day Two litres without fail. (70 oz). Sometimes also added is the odd cup of tea or extra glass of water that I don't count in from my four bottles of water that I don't stop until I've drained every day :-) What is your exercise routine, type of exercise, and how often. I walk part of the way to and from work every day, which is around 40 minutes total. On the weekends, I usually get in one or two big walks - around 5 or 6 miles as standard over a couple of hours. I take any opportunity to walk everywhere and save a bus fare these days - to the supermarket, to go shopping, to visit friends etc. How is your energy level? At the moment, really good. Some times I feel a bit drained if I haven't been strict with my nutrition or have exercised too much on too little calories, but generally great. I feel raring to go the majority of the time right now! -
Need Lap Band Buddy / Mentor On the road to being banded...need a mentor!!

There is a llight..keep the faith - if I got my life back, you will too. If thereis any way you can start writing down what you eat and make some minor adjustments in it you will probably be able to lose some weight and help your knees out. I know how hard it is, but I also know how hard it is to not be able to get around. Since you have decided that you want to get banded it will just make everything easier, for you too since you will have started journaling your foods and feelings. I know it's a stressful time for you right now, but if you can try to substitute some of that hi car, hi calorie comfort food with something like apiece of fruit or even a piece of grilled chicken I bet you start dropping pounds. Chair exercises, what a great idea! You are doing everything to get yourself in the right mindset...I'm proud of you. Sandi -
Wow, It is good to hear from you all about the different approved foods. My Dr. Says only clear liquids and Jello. broth etc. for this first week. Thankfully I am not hungry. I have not started a food journal, I think it will be helpful to see how many calories I am getting. My Dr. says he wants me to just focus on letting my stomach heal for the first couple of weeks. next week I can add yougurt and 1 cup of milk a day. I hope that we can stay strong until we are able to add food. I will be able to get my first fill at my 4 week check up. How about you guys, how are you all doing today?

Im always tired and weak. (12 days since surgery)
Karcares replied to redprincess's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Right? 15 min on Elliptical? I wouldn't have been able to do that before my surgery! I'm very out of shape and this is killing me. Mornings are the hardest for me, maybe because no calories all night long. Am I supposed to have a shake in the the middle of the night? I just feel I'm doing something wrong to feel this bad. -
Cold all the time post op day 10
beachgurl84 replied to JM1997's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My first 4 months post op were miserable for me as far as being cold. I would sleep in a sweatshirt, sleep pants, fuzzy socks, and 4 blankets. If I left the house, I had at least a hoodie and a jacket with me. If I was at home, I had a robe on. It's eased up the last couple weeks. I still have the occasional bad night but for the most part my body temp has regulated. So it's perfectly normal. My doc also told me my low Iron (I was/am anemic pre and post surgery) could be contributing. I would suggest he ask his doc about his blood work and I hate to say it like this, but get used to it. I think it has a lot to do with taking in less calories than we're burning so I always thought of it as more proof I was losing weight. That helped when the cold got painful. I feel for him, but it's all part of a wonderful journey. -
Calories count - so you will want to take the drinks with minimal calories. Journaling all food/liquids is the best way to stay on target. I try to stay at 1400 cal or below. As stated - sips generally; gulping is not recommended. When I get stuck - and think a sip will help - it does not - it actually makes it worse. So I learned that lesson and don't even attempt now days. I do keep a drink by my side ALL DAY long -- Crystal Light in a Gatorade 32 oz bottle. Minimim of 2 a day generally 3 or 4 of them is what I get in. Good luck!

Karcares doing the math in my head your calories sound about like mine. This is the start of my second week and I've bumped my calories up to around 550 with the addition on tomato soup and halo top ice cream. I'd definitely be calling and letting them know how you feel. I hope you feel better! -

How many calories do you get daily? I'm getting around 500. I'm retired so I just stick my hair in a ponytail and haven't used any makeup. Showering has been ok. I don't get too tired. Are you back to work? -
What do you normally have for breakfast?
gingerjane posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just had my first fill on Monday and I had been drinking Muscle Milk Protein shakes every morning for Breakfast, but I swear since my first fill, they're not holding me over as long. So, today I branched out with two slices of whole grain toast with 2 tblsp of Peanut Butter. (Well, it wasn't quite 2 because I go light on the PNB) The bread was 35 calories per slice and double protein, so altogether my breakfast had 15 grams of protein and less than 20 grams of carbs. Total calories were 210. I ate almost both slices. Is that too much? They weren't large slices of toast (I'd say slightly smaller than the average loaf) but still I ate BOTH. Of course, I do feel full now. But, I want to make sure that I'm not overeating. What do you normally eat for breakfast. I am not an egg person and I can't stand yogurt, either. I'm just curious to see how other bandsters handle this meal. And - I'm a breakfast person. I always eat heavier in the morning and at lunch than I do at night. -
Now that it's summer, there are a lot of really good, really sweet, fruits available. I eat watermelon every day. I avoid bananas because they're so high in calories, but black plums, nectarines, and strawberries are sweet AND good for you. I know, sounds like I'm bucking for sainthood huh? Catch me on a bad day though and you'll see some serious Dorito crunchin' goin' on!!! Good luck with the sweets cravings! BTW - I make sugar-free, fat-free pudding at home; I think it tastes better than the pre-made kind.
-
I have a YUMMY chocolate ice blended from the Coffee Bean. It is sugar-free/fat-free and is amazing! Or I freeze "Vitamin Water" by Glacieu...yummy slushie! If I have one of these things every day, it curbs my sweet tooth with FEW calories.
-
This is what I do, too. Give in to the craving sometimes but just a little. And count it in your calorie count for the day.

How do you handle sweet cravings?
giveyouthemoon replied to MonaLisa's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have some sugar free candy every now and again. I can get TOO addicted to it so I have to be super careful. I echo others, you gotta be getting down the Proteins. You won't be as hungry for sweets if you do. I was skeered for a long time to eat meat. It seems TOO tough but you gotta try. Chew and chew and chew!!!! Try mashing up a hard boiled egg with a little mayo and mustard for an bit of egg salad. Good Protein, easy on the calories and VERY satisfying! Also, cook a chicken breast then whir it around in a kitchen blender (one of those magic bullet thingies). I whir the beejesus out of chicken with some season salt and spices and a little cheese and mayo. Makes a chicken pate kind of a deal that is SUPER yummy, chock full of protein and goes down nice. (and hey, you can do the same with a can of tuna!) Experiment! -

Sugar-free jello pudding cups. Only 60 calories, and very satisfying. -
The only pre-made I really like is the Slimfast low carb vanilla. 180 calories, 20 grams of protein. It was on my surgeon's approved list and I'm still drinking it when I just can't eat.

1 month surgeriversary (yesterday)
meggiep replied to kellyw74's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
HOORAY for my RV sleeve sistuh!!!! Sounds like you are on the road to normal life! Wow! Coincidentally- yesterday was my four weeks too ;-P Though I am not on soft foods I pureed two ounces of costco rotisserie chicken salad yesterday and (after pulling out the celery) ate it in total rapture! I was a little worried as I know chicken can be a problem but not only did it becoe the new"best thing I ever ate " but it went down beautifully! It is 14 grams of Protein for two ounces too- and zero carbs! It felt good to add another food since I fell into a rut last week eating the same things for five days straight because I knew I would tolerate it and it added up right. I want to avoid doing that and keep trying new things. Next up? A veggie, and a fruit. I actually am wanting to have a higher calorie day for mixing it up since I seem to end up between 580-660 calories day after day and I don't want to fall into starvation mode. I did lose four pounds last week and this week has been a bit frustrating- for three days straight I have lost 0.2 pounds! Well- I wont really complain since if I lose .2 a day for ten days that will still be two pounds so I guess as long as it goes down! This also makes me thing upping the calories for a day or two might help but it is HARD to do! I wait 2-3 hours between "meals" and then with waiting after to drink...well fitting in an extra something is not that easy! I am really proud that I am exercising twice most days- 45 minutes of walking and an hour of Water aerobics. That also can have caused the slowdown again if I am making muscles. I need to remember it is a journey, not a race! Now where is Michelle? We need to hear about her one month! -
Hi Nursedeeva and congrats on your banding! I was banded on 1/30/07 and I had and still have a hard time getting my fluids and protein shakes in. I have a shake for breakfast and it holds me for at least 6 hours. I do sip on water all day long. I am still not hungry though. I drink my shakes and eat cottage cheese because I know that I need the protein. I am still only taking in about 400-500 calories a day. I didn't weigh myself until I went to my 2 week post-op appt. My doctor said the same thing about the first 6 weeks being a time for healing. Best of luck to you! Gigi:)

Tape measure moves, scale not so much
Emilie.Lancaster posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my 3week post op appointment two days ago. I was feeling great on the way in because it was weigh in. I don't own a scale. HW was 255. SW 249. I weighed at my parents pool 10 days post op -232. Drum roll for official weigh in at docs... 233. Wtf? I was inches smaller in those 11 days!? I can see shrinkage in my thighs and waist. Gah! Where are those pounds stuck to me!? (Rechecks own ass, notes reduced size. Shrugs) I am tracking that food, baby. Every day. Getting my ton of protein and keeping the calories down. What's the score? My doc is fine with the 15 pounds in three weeks, but I have just held there for 10 days! -
Dear Plumpy Pad, So my husband has been put on a 500 calorie a day diet due to his diabetes, and I am matching him day for day to be supportive AND lose the weight I drastically need to lose. Today the thing I always dread when I go on a diet happened... A friend decided to tell me 500 calories is way too little and it will give me jaundice, kill me, etc... I know they mean well, but c'mon... no it won't. My father is a doctor, and he knows me pretty well, and he is supportive of the 500 calorie and under diet. It is for 100 days, and then we will both step up to 1000 calories and under. I just cannot handle it when people try to tell me I'm not eating enough... Hello? Have you seen me? Plus it's not even like I'm unfulfilled and hungry all the time either! I feel full, I have my 475 calories today and I feel great! I guess I just can't talk about what I'm doing with my friends because that will be the reaction I get. In high school I only ate like 200-300 calories a day and none of my friends got in my face... :: oh well... I'm still going to continue with it.

At home, I use the kitchen scale to measure everything that I eat. Sometimes, I can sort of eyeball an amount, but always check, just in case. However, when I go out to eat, or go to a friend's place, I find myself estimating how much is going onto my plate. Sometimes, if I've packed half my meal and brought it home, I'm surprised at how my estimations were incorrect. I might be over estimating at times (causing me to have a lower Protein and calorie intake), or under estimating (so I end up with a higher calorie intake than I should have). I've thought about getting a pocket scale, so I could use it when eating outside. Does anyone use one? Is it awkward and difficult to use? I'm open about the surgery, so don't mind people asking questions or looking at me weirdly.

Hi Nickie, Your problem is the biggest challenge of almost all bandsters since we are all more open at night and our bands dont behave in the evening! Whats the deal with that? LOL . I have this problem too and it doesnt get better unless food is no longer the priority in the evening. Its not hunger really. ITs boredom and the food is there afterall and tastes good! I formed an addiction to Peanut Butter during the time I was recovering from plastic surgery because it was the easiest thing to reach for in the cupboard that I didnt have to make anything. I could just get a spoon and stick it in the jar. Heres my strategy to get through the evening hours: I drink two cups of tea with Splenda and some FF cream Dont keep too much crap in the house (I have two children and this is hard to do sometimes!!) Have lots of evening Snacks that you can indulge in that are not too bad either sugar or caloric wise. SOme examples: 60 calorie fat free pudding SF Jello ready made string cheese 100 calorie popcorn bags A piece of 35 calorie bread toasted with SF jam 100 calorie cookie or graham cracker bag SF chocolate bar Sometime I will even have two of these off the list. If all else fails, go to sleep!! LOL Babs in TX 334/180ish
