Sleeve or Bypass? Confused
kcuster83 replied to GinSunflowers's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have severe GERD as well. I went into my appointment prepared to discuss the sleeve and he was highly against it due to my GERD. Recommended bypass and gave his reasons, i researched and agreed. I have bypass on the 21st. Apparently A LOT of people develop GERD after the sleeve surgery, even when not having it previously. Mine is horrible and there was no way I was chancing making it worse, I am hoping it goes away completely! -
Same, girl. Same! I'm almost a year out from my Lap Band being removed and I've been eating around 600 calories a day. Terrified of regain. I haven't regained while waiting for my revision to bypass tho, thankfully.

Hi! Dr. Sanborn did my gastric bypass September 29, 2021. He did an excellent job, I had very little pain and my incision sites are already fading. I've lost 44 lbs since my surgery, 60 lbs total. Sent from my Pixel 3a using BariatricPal mobile app -
Sleeve or Bypass? Confused
Arabesque replied to GinSunflowers's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The surgeon may be basing their recommendation for sleeve over bypass because of the severity of your gerd & what damage it has caused. I had occasional reflux, which isn’t as severe as gerd, for decades before my surgery. I managed it with diet (no spicy food, no high fat, rich or creamy foods, only occasional carbonated drinks - champagne & tonic in a G&T - little or no caffeine). I only needed to take a ppi a bare handful of times a year. My surgeon recommended a sleeve too because I was managing my reflux well & it was consequently a pretty minor case. Do I still have reflux? Yes, but it manifests itself differently. Hiccups not as severe, no bad taste in my mouth, though I have burning in the back of my throat 3 or 4 times a week at night. I do take Nexium every morning now which my surgeon warned me I’d have to. But if you’d feel more comfortable with bypass, you have the right to request that surgery. -
Sleeve or Bypass? Confused

Thank you, but it was Bypass not lap band -
So my bariatric doctor is trying to convince me to get the sleeve instead of the Bypass, which I thought would be better for me being that I have GERD & a hiatal hernia. He says he can fix my hiatal hernia and after he fixes it, I would be fine and won’t develop another hernia. Now I’m confused and not sure which surgery would be the best for me. Has anyone who’s had the sleeve ever developed a second hiatal hernia after it was originally fixed during a sleeve surgery?.

What Led To Revision
emk101009 replied to dennydenco's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had the sleeve 7 years ago. I lost 90 lbs. I gained back 70. I have terrible Gerd. My surgeon told me a few years out that the sleeve did what it was supposed to do and i won't lose like weight again. I went to a new surgeon and he recommended a revision to bypass. I'm 6 days out. I hope to hell I can maintain this time. -
Post-op Diet: First Few Weeks
xxaprilrose replied to cgp1204's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
new here.. I just had my surgery on Thurs so 5 days ago for me as well.... I wonder why everyones plan is different too. I was sent home with a list for week 1, 2, 3-4, 5-6, and week 7. Right now with week one its just the liquid diet but on friday I can start week 2 which includes mashed potatoes, yogurt, plain oatmeal, unsweetened applesauce and cottage cheese. Personally I dont like anything on the list except for mashed potatoes but man can I not wait until Friday for them! I had the gastric bypass rather than the sleeve so I wonder if thats the difference? I have no idea but I am curious why it varies so much. -
What do you do when you get sick?
paradigm7 replied to berryboo97's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am two years out from my gastric bypass surgery. On the occasion when I do feel sick, I drink both Smartwater (for the electrolytes) and Fever Tree Ginger Beer. I get both the Smartwater and Fever Tree Ginger Beer at Costco. The Ginger Beer is especially nice for calming down nausea and vomiting. -
My gastric bypass was revision surgery from a sleeve due to hiatal hernia and reflux. Since I had the sleeve first, most of the hunger hormone (ghrelin) producing cells were in the part of the stomach they removed. I rarely got really hungry with the sleeve, so perhaps that might carry over with the bypass as well. I know my remnant stomach is still there, but it's a sleeve, not a full stomach so it won't produce the hunger hormone like others. That being said, I do hope after time I can end up eating more reasonable portions. After a year or so with the sleeve I was able to eat 3-4 oz of solid protein with 1/3 to 1/2 cup veggies and a little starch. I am hopeful for similar capacities with the bypass.

November Surgery Buddies!!!
OutdoorsGirl replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had surgery on 11/9. I can eat about a cup of food. My meds slow down my metabolism, so I’ve only lost 47 lbs so far. I’ve checked goodwill for clothes, but didn’t have any luck. I’m buying stretchy pants so they will last through a few sizes. Good job losing November surgery friends! -
November Surgery Buddies!!!
Lanitele replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello everyone! Happy to see that you are doing well! My surgery was on November 24, I lost 57 lb, which is 70% of my weight loss goal. Felling great, no issues at all. I had couple stalls, the last one was almost three weeks long. Last week I noticed that I can eat bigger portions of solid foods without feeling restrictions. Do you guys feel less restrictions too? How much of solid food can you eat at once, like one cup or less? -

Love hearing from my November Pals!!! i am doing well and have had little to no issues. I still struggle with taking 30 minutes to eat my little meals and not being able to drink 30 mins prior and after. But other than that, I'm feeling ahhhhmazing!!! I over half-way there and I really need to go to Goodwill to pick up a couple of pair of smaller jeans, I don't want to spend good money on jeans that I will be in for a short period of time. lol I hope you are all feeling great too. -
My husband and I are on this weight loss surgery journey together. We have completed all our pre-op requirements, and now are just waiting. We will both be having the gastric bypass and are hoping for a 100 lb loss each. I have requested to have our surgeries same day or within days of each other - our adult children have agreed to help us out for awhile. I'm excited to finally post here after reading everyone else's news & questions. I've been gathering information, gadgets and containers in anticipation of our new lifestyle. We already have made big changes and lost some weight. So good luck to Mike & I, as well as, all of you 😀

April 2022 Surgery Buddies
Rara0323 replied to Crinkles's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey Yall Im new But i Just recieved my Surgery Date to! April 18th i am having the Gastric Bypass anyone else? Nervous is an understatement not sure how im going to do the liquid diet 2 weeks but im gonna try! -
Tomorrow I will be three weeks out from bypass surgery. For the past six days my surgeon's diet program has had me eating soft, moist proteins, with a target of eventually getting to 3oz per meal before adding in non-starchy vegetables. I'm really surprised at how sensitive my stomach is to food capacity. Sometimes I can eat 2.5 to 2.75 ounces of food and feel fine. The next day the same amount makes me feel awful as though I ate a pound of food. It's really something how sensitive my new stomach is as it heals and how even 1/4 ounce of extra food can create all kinds of discomfort.

Sulynfan22 replied to LilaNicole20's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
To March Surgery Buddies, well, today is my Gastric Bypass. I'm currently waiting for my best friend to take me to the hospital-have to be there at 7:30am. I'm trusting God to take care of me, but in still a little nervous. I'll let you know how everything goes, when i can. I'm at 224 lbs and am looking forward to seeing that number go down significantly and many of my aches and pains to get much better or go away completely. Please, everyone, keep me in your prayers :) -
Hello again, I just wanted to know if anyone with pcos and has have/had hirsutism how did/does it look did you have less hair on you body by a lot or just a little or what was your result of your hirsutism after gastric bypass?

Hi everyone! I have not had the gastric bypass yet. I am still in my first 6 months of learning to eat healthy/dieting. I do have a question. What do you when you get sick? I have always been told drink ginger ale or coke with cracker, or my other got to is bread. It just seems to settle my stomach when I am sick and especially have to take meds. This town I didn’t want a shake, anything felt like it was make it worse, but the ginger ale/coke abs crackers made me feel better. Or just eating plain bread. I just know after the gastric bypass I don’t think those would be an option or most likely not the best option. I just don’t know what else I would do. Thank you in Advance!

Take 2 - 4 days post op revision tomtpux en y
Tufflaw replied to emk101009's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Welcome to the club! I had my sleeve in Dec 2016, lost a LOT (about 120 lbs in 6 months), slowly put it back on over then next few years, until I was almost back to my starting point. I got revised to a bypass in Nov 2021 and it's going great so far! As of this morning I'm down 65 lbs and feel great. Both of us now know how to do things right and how to do things wrong, so keep that in mind when tempted, that's what I plan on doing. Good luck! -
I had gastric bypass in July 2020 and I constantly worry about slipping back into my old ways. I feel like I can eat way more (volume-wise) than I should be able to. I see people posting on the Food Before & After Pictures thread and saying, "I ate two bites and was full for the rest of the week," or "I merely looked at this salad and was stuffed," but I can eat a "normal" size meal at this point. However, I think back to what I used to eat and realize I am still eating far less than I used to, and I'm eating foods that are much healthier and lower in calories than what I used to eat. A few things that have helped me: I shop almost exclusively online - grocery pickup or delivery. This makes it easy to avoid impulse purchases because I order in advance and don't actually go into the store. I start with my favorites list, and search for anything I need that's not on my list. My point is that I'm not browsing all of the products in the store, but targeting what I want to buy, so I don't even see or look at junk food, and I don't bring it into my house. I eat a lot of vegetables. Every week, I buy and prep carrots, celery, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, and sweet peppers. I prepare a container for each day and I pre-add a saved meal in My FItness Pal each day, so I snack on the veggies any time I want during the day (I use Walden Farms zero-calorie ranch dressing as a dip). It's a lot of food for very few calories (not to mention healthy and full of vitamins), and it helps me avoid snacking on other things. I almost look at it as an assignment to eat the veggies -- I have to eat them, so I better not fill up on other stuff first. I find healthy and delicious recipes on Pinterest. I've found so many great recipes that I don't even want things like pizza and fast food. I eat healthy(ish) treats every day. My favorite thing is sugar-free meringue (whipped pasteurized egg whites with 0-calorie sweetener), which I eat raw as a whipped cream substitute, frozen as an ice cream substitute, or baked as a cookie substitute. 25 calories worth of egg whites makes about 1 cup of meringue or 20 small cookies. Other favorites include protein bars (Built Bars are my favorites, and they're lower in calories than most protein bars), sugar-free Jello, protein mug cake, and plain rice cakes sprayed with I Can't Believe It's Not Butter and sprinkled with brown sugar Swerve and cinnamon. I think these treats help me stay on track and not get tempted by real ice cream and high-calorie cookies.

Hi@Woodstock23, I hope you're well [emoji16]. I'm booked in for a gastric bypass on the 24th and I'm feeling exactly the same way. I'm worried it will not take place but also a bit scared of having the surgery [emoji85]. I'm doing my best to keep my mind busy so that I don't worry too much. I've been reading 'Life after gastric surgery' and it has been really helpful, I'm watching 'My 600lb life' and getting the house organised so I can be less stressed over housework after surgery [emoji1787][emoji23] where are you having your surgery? Keep smiling how've got this [emoji3059] Sent from my SM-G980F using BariatricPal mobile app
