Do you see yourself as thin yet?
BlueIGT replied to JRT Mom's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I struggle with this also. I have everyone telling me I am so tiny now and skin and bones...which I don't see. I try to explain to them that what they see and what I see when I look in the mirror or at my body are two very different things. I don't deny that I am a whole lot smaller than I used to be, but thin and skin and bones doesn't really seem rational in my eyes. I am well aware that it is body dysmorphia . I do look at side by side pictures of before and after and I do see the difference. I don't still see myself as heavy as I used to be but I don't see the thin. Some days I can see it in my face and then the next day my face looks really puffy and big. It's a really strange game our minds play on us. -
First pre-op meeting, questions
Suzi_the_Q replied to Mettemorphose's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wear something loose and comfortable since you'll be asked to pull it up for the exam. I recently had my first tests (it's different in the US) and they did an ultrasound of my legs to check the veins for clots/ potential clotting issues. For me they also did an upper GI (esophagus to stomach) Xray to make sure I had no swallowing issues either and an EKG. There will be blood work too. You'll meet the surgeon who will go over surgery options with you. My Dr wanted me to be up to date on my pap smear and mammogram. Re: pre-op: every program is different, they'll talk about it there. Don't be scared, it must be upsetting being declined by the public health service for past mental health issues, that doesn't seem right but I don't know Denmark's health system at all, but generally private practice is not so stringent on prerequisites. Having had a serious weight loss years ago, and having had a serious hair loss, my dermatologist recommended taking Biotin. I use a Hair, Skin, Nails, gummie. I have had wonderful results. It takes about two months to see results. It will be short hairs coming in, not breakage. I don’t have a widening part any longer. -

Great to see I’m in sync mostly with everyone else. I’ve lost about 50 pounds and still need 38 more. It’s coming off slow but I’m okay with it. I also am not wanting that saggy skin which I’m already having a bit. My hair loss is crazy but just thin, no balding yet. Does anyone have recommendations for hair loss. Why does this Evan happen. -

Lisa, you’ve come too far to lust for other people’s food. I have seen too many people go through bypass surgery, and put the weight back, way more rapidly, than the rate it came off. I think that’s why I put off having the sleeve procedure for so long. Get yourself together. You wouldn’t lust for someone else’s partner, and act on it! As for the hair, I’ve experienced hair loss before, after strict dieting, or surgeries. My part was getting wider and wider. At the suggestion of my dermatologist, I started taking a Hair, Skin, & Nails formula, gummy vitamin, with a high amount of Biotin. It takes about 8 weeks. You should see new, baby hairs coming in. It’s not breakage. enjoy your socializing. Savor the company. Forget the food. -

I was 339 on 5/26 at my pre-op appt. Day of surgery was at 320 and two weeks out am at 312. I had my lapband removed are the same time as the bypass and had an allergic reaction to the skin glue. I am on my 2nd round of steroids, ugh. Hopefully this will help and get it cleared up. I go back to work on the 29th and I know my pants rubbing is going to drive me nuts all day long. -
Had my bypass on 6/09. Recovery for me was better than expected pain wise. Only thing that happened was I had a really bad allergic reaction to the skin glue they used to close the incisions. I am on my 2nd round of steroids. Hopefully this will work it’s magic, my belly looks like a welted lobster, red and itchy. I am on purées now and in about a week can move on to soft/mushy foods. I go back to work on Monday, so can’t wait, I have been going stir crazy at home. Hope everyone has a great day.

Great to hear from so many folks on here! I'm plugging along, I'm down a little over 50 pounds including the pre-surgery loss. I'm losing about a pound to 2 per week now. I've been walking a lot, and have started doing some more rigorous walks, although not anything that counts as "hiking"...My knees feel so much better, my stamina is up, my lung capacity is better. I try to make sure I get up and move for at least 5 to 10 minutes every hour, not so much for the calorie burn but to keep my metabolism up. It's been hard at times not to fall into grazing...We are home so much because of the pandemic, and at one point I was working from home 4 days a week. I try to keep hard boiled eggs, tuna or chicken salad ready in the fridge so if I need a snack I can have some protein. I also found I love sunflower butter, and a tablespoon of that with a half an apple, or some protein crackers is a great little snack for me. Frozen shrimp is also a new staple for me; I often have a salad with 6 shrimp for lunch, or make up a shrimp salad with reduced calorie mayo and lemon juice, red pepper, onions and celery. I am completely off the protein shakes, except I use Premier Cafe Latte in my coffee. I have a protein bar once or twice a week, but mostly because I like them. I eat between 800 and 1000 calories per day, which the nutritionist was happy with. Downsides: hair loss! Which is really bad right now, don't know why, maybe because I've lost enough weight to trigger it; Extra skin, especially on the upper arms, and boy head hunger is real. Also, I think the novelty is wearing off, I find myself thinking stupid things, like "I could eat just a quarter of the jelly donut" or "1 piece of pizza would be ok". So basically I am lusting after other people's food! I keep telling myself in maintenance I can try an indulgence once in awhile. I miss having a couple of drinks. My daughter is coming for a visit this Saturday, and we will socially distance out in the yard, and I would love to mix up some sangria (I make mine with rum and red wine....). Cucumber mint water will have to do! Stay well everyone! Nice to hear from folks! -

Hi everyone. I had my GBP Feb. 13/20. My start weight was 217. I am currently 147, so am down 70 pounds from starting the presurgery diet. I am having some gall bladder issues but can hold them at bay by eating low fat, at least for now. Mostly I am in awe that I am wearing a size medium, and I do have a lot of hanging skin (can you say bat wings? Lol) I am hoping to make my goal weight of 127, but not as quickly as it’s been going. It seems to be hard on the gallbladder. I have been exercising every day but backed off a bit to try to slow the weight loss down. I was walking and doing weights and biking. I have so much energy now and my knees are so much better. I am happy and mostly feeling good. How are all the other February people doing? -

I had my surgery 3/9, then got no support. Was stalled the first month. It was more than frustrating. I think I’m down 40 pounds, including the presurgical loss. I had hoped it would be faster. I reached out to the doctor. All he said was, Do you want to be a pile of skin?” The office support is non existent. I am using the ProTracker, Keto/calorie, free app. If I go no carb, I stall. Too much protein, I have a gout attack. Have been diligent about keeping carbs under 50, Calories under 1000. Exercise is sporadic, as I had a serious leg injury, in April. I have no desire to binge, which is a big plus, no cravings for anything. I’m doing all I can, and focus on that. A pound-a pound and a half, a week, will have to do. It’s the mystery up a pound, that’s hard to take. -

Congrats on your weight loss. An amazing achievement. I eat oatmeal often for breakfast (at the moment it’s every day cause I’m over eggs) & did so through my weigh loss stage as it’s a good carb & was on my diet. (Mind you the couple of teaspoons I could eat wouldn’t had much of an impact.) When I got to maintenance, my dietician recommended small amounts of whole/multi grain carbs. Crackers have been the easy choice for me as I didn’t want to go down the bread & pasta route either. They’re good for carrying other foods like hummus, avocado, etc. & are an easy snack. And it’s nice to have a crunchy bite. These few carbs have helped keep me regular (yippee) & have improved the skin on my face - not as gaunt looking anymore. They’ve helped me maintain & if I drop them I start losing weight again. Amusingly, I bought a brown rice cracker during lockdown as my usual ones weren’t available - result was many smelly farts. Brown rice is now on my avoid at all costs list. -
Obsessing about Plastic Surgery!!
ms.sss replied to ChubRub's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Did your surgeon tell you how much skin/tissue they removed? Also, its normal to weigh heavier after surgery due to swelling/fluid retention and whatnot. I vaguely recall being 5 or so pounds heavier after a couple days after surgery (though I was wearing compression garments and had two drains attached to me at the time I got on the scale, so there's that...) -

Using the rest of the vegan chipotle sauce tonight on these collard green burritos with walnut meat, loosely inspired by these recipes, and seriously inspired by all of the delicious-looking bbq posts here lately! I used to be able to eat 4 or 5 of these; now I can eat one in a 90 minute sitting. I ❤ VSG. -

Obsessing about Plastic Surgery!!
Darktowerdream replied to ChubRub's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I’m new to the lingo but I assumed phase two Faja meant something to help with swelling but easier to get off and on and wear under clothes normally, not a bigger size. I know you tighten the Faja to waist train as comfortable to help fluid placement. If the swelling continues to be a problem Know it can take a year but try to avoid salty foods that’s going to be an issue for me because the salt helps orthostatic intolerance. At some point have a discussion with your surgeon. this is an example of a phase two Faja https://www.amazon.com/Sonryse-Compression-Garment-Stage-Surgery/dp/B07RY3Q2LM let’s see ... I just did a quick measuring with my Faja on when I read your message so probably not exact. But my underbust area has been small for years. I lost bone density over the past years. Even prior to wls. underbust should = exact bra band size or rounded up to what’s available or for comfort but fits snug at the loosest hook. Yes I’m 5’ and I think the hospital scale said 101.2 lb before surgery. Although I stepped on the scale this morning at 107.6. I wear size 8 sneaker size 8 Chaco sandal but size 6-6.5 in Birkenstock’s (Not the suede ones the washable cheaper ones) Florida I mostly can’t wear pants ... Thank you💛 I’ve never seen myself cute or pretty a lot of this surgery was about function and having horrid 90 year old lady thighs and butt flaps and ok yes the boobs is partly cosmetic but who wants mostly empty skin? I had never reached this weight in my adult life. I’d always been the mildly obese short kid. Then the obese adult when I lost on my own my body fought me ... sorry 😐 I had a rough night I can’t get the sleeping position right. And need to try to change positions. Gotta try to shower today. -

Daisyjayne replied to JRT Mom's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm regularly told I'm skinny, by family and now I'm getting it from colleagues. Objectively I can see my ribs, and collarbones, and my arms are just muscle and bone (and loose skin!). BUT my size 10 Aus pants fall off my hips and are tight on my calves 😭. I look at my legs and think they are huge, but have no butt anymore, just loose skin. I don't feel like I look in proportion. Body dysmporphia is real and hard to move past. Plus I'm only 0.6 of a kg from from my goal weight of 60kg. But my weightloss disordered eating brain says "we'll, why not get to 59? Why stop there, get to 58?". So maintenance and deciding when is enough is going to be hard for me. At my last surgeon visit the exercise physiologist told me I should stop losing weight as my body fat was getting low. I've lost another 8.5kg since then. And it still falls off pretty easily nearly 9 months out from vsg. -

@ms.sss sizing is key, sounds like you need a phase 2 Faja. I like that they chose is high quality medical grade brand. I only know Spanx bras but I would say this would be thicker and much higher quality and better for reducing swelling. I want to start out saying that I have serious sensory issues but I actually don’t mind the Faja. The material is excellent. im Not sure exact measurements but in the Faja (my doctor has me on the loosest hook to start) I measure 25” waist and I think 34” hip. I actually have waist definition I’d lost. I am wearing a size XS. Right now the fit is just right. Some people wear Faja for longer than might be prescribed. Also some people might wear a size looser Faja to bed if they continue wearing them. So if you move to a step two Faja (sizing down ... which hopefully I’m remembering correctly) then you keep the hold Faja and try wearing it to bed. now my only issue with my Faja is I have a single drain coming from my hip and I don’t know where to run the drain tube, it’s so awkward to have it run down through the crotch area but I’m not sure though the middle In between hooks would impede flow. i havent navigated clothes beyond what I wore on the plane home which was loose cargo pants and a light sweatshirt. It was awkward. I’m thinking if I should just wear dresses? Or compression leggings ... (exercise bottoms) I wore my nightgown all day which I never do .... just because it was convenient. i better get some sleep now. If I forgot to answer anything let me know and I’m glad I could answer questions 🙃 side note. my post surgery bra is the same brand. i can attach pictures. I think they measured my bust as 33” but my underbust is 26” I’m not sure what size I will be though. -
Did you ever figure out what caused it? I just noticed mine has a ring around it today too and all the way inside. Though the color is a definite dark pink, not a light pink, and goes all the way into the belly button. I’ve lost 70 lbs now, but I’m nervous as to what it could be? It doesn’t itch or hurt, and I’m not sure how long it’s been like this bc I have to kind of lift my skin to see the inside of my bellybutton but I noticed it when I got out of the shower today. I hope it’s not an infection!!

I have lost 120lbs and I’ve been using collagen peptides and this cream called Firm. It has been amazing for me and has helped my skin on my arms, thighs, and neck immensely. I will have to probably get plastics on my tummy but my arms and thighs are fine.

July 2020 Surgery anyone?
TB921 replied to IWantTheDream's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all ! I had my gastric bypass on 6/3/2020. I had a roughy first week with pain and a horrible skin reaction to the chlorhexidrine used in surgery prep. After that things Went really well except yesterday when I tried canned chicken, one bite chewed well. I had horrible chest pain. It finally subsided but I still have a bit of chest pain today. I went back on full liquids for 24 hours. Hope things are better tomorrow. I’m glad to have found others who are the same stage as I am. -
Do you see yourself as thin yet?
momof3_angels replied to JRT Mom's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I do. With clothes on I really like my body shape (minus the fact that my boobs always shrink when I lose weight lol - I am small chested). For me, I do still think my calves are way too big. And clothes off, I don't like my belly yet... but part of that is the fact that I had 3 c-sections. And also when I lost weight this time, I see more stretch marks and it's a bit too saggy/loose. Not sure if I will ever like those things about myself. I thought I was done losing weight/clothing sizes... but this week I have started dropping pounds again. I weighed 103 and wore size 3 when I graduated high school. After nursing school and before my first baby I weighed 135 and wore a size 5. I was 24. I have never been that small since (although I came close when I lost my last baby weight before my whole body rebelled against me). Today? I weighed in at 128.3 and wear a size 4! And I stopped trying to lose weight a couple months ago. Anyhow, like I said, I am happy with my clothed body, but still wish I could get my stomach and calves to a size/shape that makes me happy. I do think it is hard for most of us to be completely happy and not view some part of our body through a warped lense. -
I started at about your same weight. Down 108 lbs, thinking about 20 more and I’ll call “goal”. I have three consultations with plastic surgeons in the coming weeks, planning for skin removal surgery after the new year. No amount of time is going to make my bat wings or belly skin go away, and my poor boobs are so deflated. I see PS as the final step, and my reward for all the hard work I’ve put in.
