    Possible Revision

I'm not a revision patient, but yes - I've heard of people that developed GERD months - or even a couple years - after sleeve surgery.

    Possible Revision

May I ask, for those who’ve had to revise due to GERD... was that obvious directly following sleeve surgery, or did it take months or years to manifest? I’m curious because while I had acid reflux from time to time at my heaviest I haven’t experienced much that the occasional Tums can’t sort, in the six months since getting sleeved. Curious if it’s something that comes later. Thanks!

    Possible Revision

AGREED!!! I had it many years, along with my pregnancies too!! It came and went - never big issue - then little before surgery I was getting it - put on PPI's and kept on them till after surgery - I'm still on them all these years and it just never goes away - so now I'm up to 2 RX pills per day - protonix as well as Prevacid at night time until surgery - just to try and keep it at bay.. I've tried ACV too - seemed to help a little, as a natural thing - I've tried all different things and end up back on PPIs and I just turned 52, I do not want to take 2 pills per day for another 30-40 years, God willing.. It's horrendous being on vacation and having to not go anywhere, cause my chest is killing me... I've had so many work ups and it comes back to the belly/sleeve issue - I also need a umbilical hernia repaired and they won't do it right now, but possibly do it within the revision surgery, surgeon said. They don't want to do it and repair it if I'm not getting the revision, due to weight gain, etc... so I think they're thinking to do it at one time and then I have a better chance of the hernia not coming back .... One can hope!

Agreed. Wow! Btw. Just because you have issues doesn’t mean you wish it upon others. He was also talking about my insurance carrier which can be a pita. My doctor Stated results are great with revision. Did you have lapband? and you’re kidding you’d prefer being overweight and possibly unhealthy then now?

    Possible Revision

Revision seems to be a common thread around here and I’ve always wondered if it’s so doctors can get two surgeries in instead of going straight to RNY??

So sorry it did not work for you. Luckily this is not very common when revising to full bypass. Which surgery did you revise to?

What did you start with and what did you revise to? Have they been able to explain why you are still experiencing such terrible gerd?

    Possible Revision

I had revision last year for severe GERD. Miserable was an understatement. Since revising I still have excruciating heartburn if I don’t take meds both morning and night. When I weigh out all pros and cons of my WLS experience overall, I would never have had it in the first place. My original weight was not nearly an obstacle compared to how the GERD holds me hostage now. So I also say, “good luck...but don’t get your hopes up.”
  9. I had my surgery almost exactly 3 years ago and didn't tell anyone other than 2 friends who live halfway around the world and are not connected to any of my other friends, family, or co-workers. I wasn't going to tell anyone, but then I thought someone should know in case something happens to me. When people asked about my weight loss I focused on the the low carb/portion control aspect of what I was doing (which, let's face it, is what leads to long-term success). I'm going for my revision surgery in a month's time and this time no one will know. The only people I would be willing to tell are some friends who are also morbidly obese - but only if they asked me specifically about it. In a few years time, when I am hopefully in maintenance mode, I think I would be more willing to talk about it openly, but while I'm still struggling, it's not something I can really talk about. I live in a country that has one of the lowest overweight/obesity rates in the world, so it's not like there are a lot of people out there who have a shared life experience that I can talk to about it.

    FEBRUARY 2020 Surgery dates🌹❤️

Just found out today that my surgery is scheduled for 2/24! This will be a revision from Sleeve to Bypass.

    Possible Revision

Yeah I have never experienced anything like the gerd that I had before revision. I would have acidic fluid streaming from my nose and mouth. Was so bad a few times that I lost my voice. I guess surgeons are all different about ppis. Mine is against them completely. i was so nervous about the ppis that I was supposed to take them for 3 weeks after revision. I didn’t experience any gerd symptoms so I just didn’t take them. I had already been on them for more than 1 year after my sleeve surgery.

    Possible Revision

Here is an interesting article I read that helped me to feel better about revising https://www.naturalnews.com/2019-12-03-dangerous-drugs-linked-to-fatal-diseases-and-cancer-heartburn-meds-death.html

    Possible Revision

I totally understand! That is exactly how I felt. I came very close to backing out of the revision and taking my chances with the ppis. plus at the time of my initial surgery I almost switched to rny right up until surgery. My thoughts were that I did not want to have the surgery twice. Don’t fear the bypass though. Just be sure to take vitamins every single day. Keep up with having your bloodwork done and you should do just fine.

    VSG to Revision

We've successfully helped several GHI members get revisions so please be optimistic - BTW, whether or not you regain weight is IRRELEVANT since changing eating patterns due to severe GERD is not only common, but often a necessary way people can tolerate ANYTHING! Let us know if you're submission is denied before anyone at the doc's office does something that might hurt your chances of being approved and GOOD LUCK! GERD really sucks so hopefully you get approved without a problem.

    Possible Revision

Thanks for sharing. I did it six years ago. I know this may sound dramatic but it almost feels like I'm being punished to have to go through a revision when I've done so well. I don't want to start over...not that I necessarily have a choice. But if I had known at the time how common revision surgery was because of reflux I don't think I would've had surgery at all.

    Gastric Bypass for Senior Citizen

Medicare will pay for it as long as you meet the criteria. I think it was over 35 BMI with a comorbidity. There was a three month "supervised" diet (during which you don't have to lose weight), and documentation of past failures with diet alone. You must be obese for 5 years, and have a psych evaluation. I was nervous because I had been told by another office that Medicare wouldn't pay for revision surgery (failed lap band) which was odd because Medicare hadn't paid for the first one. But they came through and my bill was paid.

    Possible Revision

I revised from sleeve to rny almost 9 weeks ago because of gerd. I am just now starting to have pretty bad hair loss so it does happen with each surgery. I am not due to have vitamin levels checked until next month. I keep up with taking vitamins and if there are any deficiencies, I will correct them. I think that a person just has to stay on top of being checked so that nothing gets too far out of control. I no longer have gerd and my hernia was repaired. So far the surgery has been well worth it.

    Finally Approved After 3 Years

GERD is like the main side effect of the sleeve and is always usually resolved by doing a revision. Wow, what lame-o's.

    Finally Approved After 3 Years

Wow! Way to persevere! Good luck with your revision.

    No Nsaids..

I have had a right knee replacement and the left might eventually be replaced. I had to stop taking NSAIDS right after my knee replacement because they were giving me duodenal ulcers. I have had a revision from a lap band to a RNY, and have only lost 34 pounds, and can already tell a MAJOR difference in both of my knees. If you have severe enough osteoarthritis, you may still need a knee replacement. But you will likely buy yourself several years before you might need one by losing weight. Good luck!
  21. So finally after 3 years of fighting with my past insurance I am approved! I used to have BCBS IL and switched to IL Health Alliance through my employer. They approved me within a few hours! BCBS IL denied me three times and after peer to peer they still didn't approve because they said GERD was not enough to do a revision. Surgery is in three weeks!

    Possible Revision

I'm in the same situation as you are. I'm having a revision February 11th.
  25. I'm new to the forum. I had my sleeve done six years ago and I loved it...that is until 4 months ago when medication was no longer keeping my reflux in check. I've lost 150lbs and have maintained that loss. I had a hiatal hernia repaired last month and I still have gerd symptoms and I'm terrified of having a revision. Has anyone had a revision completed? If so which one? Did you have complications? Did you have hair loss again? Vitamin deficiencies? Any complications at all?
