Lap band to gastric bypass
Mark.olypenn replied to angievasser42@gmail.com's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
That's great news all around. Hope the weight management program goes well. I started my pre-op diet today while we are driving home from Arizona. My wife has decided to do it with me which is a huge plus. God bless her for supporting me through this journey. The first day went well. My revision surgery is coming up on Feb 27. Pre-op appointments are on Monday with the surgeon and nutritionist. It is our final meetings prior to surgery. It's been a journey to get to this point, but it is only just beginning. I have been struggling with weight control since my lapband was removed in December. Traveling the last several weeks hasn't made it any easier. Hoping the pre-op diet will get me back my weight las month. -
I was revised from sleeve to RNY yesterday. Today I can do way more than sip water, Propel, and crystal light. Am I correct in assuming that liquids are going straight through like a slider and that I have nothing to worry about other than liquid, protein, and vitamins?

So I have UHC choice plus. They told me over the phone that they required the 5 year weight history, 6 month diet visits and so on. But I went and looked at the policy online and saw that they had revised their policy and guidelines at the end of the year this past year. In the revised policy, there was no 6 month diet needed and no mention of the 5 year history. So I called again to verify that and they told me no, that I needed the 6 months diets and blah blah blah. So..... I saw my surgeon for the first time to get this all started on dec 27. The nurse told me she would just send in for the prior auth and see what they came back with. When she sent in for the prior auth, all she had was my 1 office visit with them, my psych eval and that was it! I got approved in 4 days. Yes, it has to be at a center of excellence facility and you do have to have a psych eval, but @momotrips3 and @Deemarie1221 I would strongly recommend requesting they just send in the prior auth once you have those. At least they will tell you for sure sure what they need for approval. the nurse at my surgeon’s office told me that sometimes policy changes and that new info doesn’t get passed down to all of the customer service representatives but the people who are actually approving or denying should know what they are doing. anyways This is just my experience and hope this helps! -

I have UHC Choice Plus and have just chosen my surgeon and started scheduling the various appointments required, thus starting that six month insurance clock. From everything I have researched and been told by the Bariatric Center, BadWolfGirl is correct. I have had the same information and instructions. I must meet monthly for Weight Management Classes where we weigh in and can't gain any weight and try to lose, do a Psych eval, get a cardiac release from my Cardiologist, meet several times with a Nutritionist (I can't remember how many, but may pay for some extras, because I am f-ing serious about this), get some records from my Pulmonologist re: sleep apnea/ my biPap, i am having a lapband removed and revised to RNY, so I may have a couple extra requirements - that is not 100% set, yet. I haven't had to deal with Optum yet. My Bariatric Center has been around for years here in Houston and I have confidence in them. I hope that confidence is not misplaced. It's a good size practice in a large city in the Houston Medical Center, so they had better know! So, I have not been told that I need to document my weight other than the six month period - I could if they just need a number recorded annually from a doctor. I have never had any issues with UHC in the past for other things, so don't anticipate any going forward. The worst that has happened is that UHC has cut ties with a large hospital system in Houston and half of my doctors are employed through that system. Sigh. Both called the other's bluff and unless they come to terms in a couple months, I need some new docs. Surgeon is fully covered, thank God. -
The bottom line is that this is a life long journey with a very short window of "quick" weight loss. And you only have one golden shot at it. Because revisions are not usually as "easy-ish" as the first time. So you do you, Boo. But I think for you to be so categoricaly mis-aligned with your doc/RD that it's going to make your journey difficult and the sad thing is you will likely give up going to your check-ups etc. Which could spell disaster for you long term and regain in your future. So like, why have it at all? Or why have it with them. There are docs/centers who espouse a WFPD for all their surgical patients. Look one of them up and make the transition now. I will also tell you that I DO have a bias. I am pro-low carb and pro-lower healthy fat for the quickest losses and maintenance is done by adding healthy fats rather than adding protein or more fast acting carbs. I would have never gotten to my goal nor been maintaining had I been eating the grains and lots of fruit. I wouldn't. I have too many metabolic strikes against me. And not that it can't be done, but I think the life of a vegan or vegetarian WLS patient is very hard. The ones I know of in real life have either not gotten to goal ever or they have suffered big time regain. But I do know of a couple of women here who are very successful following a WFPD. But, they are also endurance athletes and as such, they're as much outliers as I am... I encourage you to look at other bariatric teams who are more closely aligned with your belief system. Studies show that long term success is directly linked to after care by a team of bari pros.

I am considering having a revision now due to weight gain during pregnancy. I didn’t gain back all my weight. 50 lbs out of the 117 I lost but I have been dieting for months and it’s just not coming off.

So, ready for my surgery but my surgeon is already 30 minutes late. I called the nurse and he's supposed to be on his way. So ready to get this over with. I'm having a sleeve revision, hernia repair and some other big word I didn't know, lol.

I too am on tpn. I had surgery 11/7 and have been in and out of hospital several times. I have had 3 stricture dilations that have not helped. Mainly due to sleeve being twisted. I am barely able to eat or drink anything. I'm lucky to drink 10oz a day and have maybe 2 to 5 bites of food. Maybe 100 calories a day. They want to do another dilation I have told them this has gone on too long needs to be fixed. They say only other option is revision to bypass. But seeing the above reply I'm concerned I wish you the best I hope they fix your issue so you can feel better! Hugs!

Dr Spann was also involved with my surgery and he is AWESOME too! You won’t be disappointed with your choice! The online support group is THE BEST - highly recommend you join as soon as you’re a patient. Mine was a revision from a previously messed up revision so can’t really help you with the insurance process BUT as soon as you become a member of online group ( they’ll give u access when you go for your appointment- pose the question to the group - you will get LOTS of info -
I'm wanting to get a revision to the sleeve I had in 2015 I've gained roughly 70lb and I feel like I or the sleeve failed me. So I want the bypass now. Any input on this

Any August 2019 people out there?

I could have sworn i checked into this thread... if i did I can't find it. So here i am... Checking in now... Late to the party. I "originally" got to this site back in 2009 when it was called LapbandTalk.... I was banded back 11/10/2009. I am 5'2" and that SW was 232lbs. I was 42 years old and married. Lost and stayed at 143lbs for Yearsssss... well until my beloved Tina had to be removed. I got a bad case of the flu and threw up violently and slipped my band... it was a terrible day. So March 23, 2017 I became WLS...less... No more tool. Up till then i was a model bandmember.... Over the last few years, I regained 30lbs.... I had started looking for a dr. to do a revision, but kept being told i didn't "weigh enough"... I was fixing to head to Mex when i stumbled on the dr. i have now.... He said the fact that I was a previous WLS pt he could do a revision.... Yeahhhhh... So Aug 21, 2019 I started my liquid diet... at 173.5lbs. 31.7BMI. SX was August 28, 2019. SX weight 165. Today, almost 24 weeks PO I weighed in this am at 133.4..... down 40lbs.... Lost the 30 i had gained post band removal and another 10..... so happy. After 26 years of marriage, it fell apart. A lot due to the WL and his NEVER supporting my SX. Then he got very jealous... He couldn't handle the men hitting on me.... and i couldn't handle it either.... the attention was intoxicating. I have since met and remarried the most amazing man.... Our last conversation... Me: i can cook a meal at home for Valentine's day. Him: no, i want you to get all dressed up so i can show you off... Band sizes.... 20 pants, 2xl shirt, 7.5 shoe, 44H bra..... After, 6 pants, lg/xlg shirt, 7 shoe, 34H/G bra Sleeve.... 10 pants, lxg shirt, 7 shoe, 36H/G bra..... Today... SIZE 4 PANTS, SMALL/MED SHIRT, 6.5 SHOE & 32G BRA..... I'm having trouble eating the amount of cal/prot. i should be... i find i can eat about 4 bits and i'm done. My hair is falling a bit (thank god i have a lot). Please tell me how yall are doing... Today i go for a check-up and talk with the dr. on my progress. can't wait to see what he says. -

I had RNY bypass revision after lapband done in 2013 so going into 2 weeks ago (Jan 27th) and I am able to drink Water, only core power protein shakes bc I’m allergic to Whey protein I discovered without sipping also and I am on Presoft foods already per my doctor stating in paperwork if I felt ok to move to Presoft go forward so that consist of Soups, unsweetened applesauce and Oikos Triple Zero yogurt and I have been fine I have appt today for my two week follow up but I had a very bad allergic reaction and I am on three meds to help me not get a ulcer and prednisone(which has not made me hungry😊) to help with the itchy, red breakout. It’s been only two days since I been on the prednisone but I can tell it’s working already still a little itchy but the rash is fading. I think it’s just us healing but the food part is weird bc I thought it would feel major restrictive like the band was but it’s not been that way so far hopefully my pouch is fine. Praying that the doctor states I can start back exercising today I have a treadmill at home and weights but I’ve already lost in two weeks a good amount so you guys are giving me hope! Go Jan Surgery tribe✨💕Thanks for sharing😊 -

Sleeve complications possible revision to bypass
RickM replied to Ttyo's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Anytime that I see someone contemplating a revision, I would advise getting a second (and even third) opinion, both from the perspective that revisions are typically more complicated than a virgin surgery, and also the reasons for the revisions are more varied, and this is where the perspectives of different surgeons with different experiences is most valuable. Strictures and twists like you are describing are an indicator of technique problems (which isn't to say that there is something particularly quirky with your individual anatomy that would have caused problems with any surgeon, just that they are frequently associated) so it is quite possible that another surgeon who is more experienced specifically with the sleeve and sleeve related surgeries may have some other ideas of how to tackle your problem. There are some surgeons out there who routinely perform some very complex revisions (such as converting a problematic RNY to a DS) and this is the type of doc that you would like to consult with, as they would be best able to straighten out your sleeve (and if they concur that an RNY is the best approach for your particular problem, that provides a lot of confidence in deciding to go that route.) I tend to like DS surgeons for sleeve problems as they typically have a lot more experience with the sleeve and correcting sleeve problems (as the sleeve is a part of the DS, most of them have been doing sleeves for over twenty years, while most bariatric surgeons have been doing them part time for 5-10 years, and some less. https://www.dsfacts.com/duodenal-switch-surgeons.php gives a very incomplete listing of DS surgeons, and unfortunately, there aren't any very close to you - NY/NJ/PA area is the closest, but probably worth the effort; most can do initial consults over phone and email. Dr. Roslin in NYC and Dr. Greenbaum in NJ both have good reputations in the DS world for complex revisions. As a side note, the mini bypass isn't often done in the States as US insurance rarely approves it, and it has never been accepted by the ASMBS. -
Sleeve complications possible revision to bypass

I'm so sorry to hear about all your complications. Can I ask where you and your sister had surgery? You've both had a lot of problems. I had the sleeve in 2011 and then had horrible acid reflux. I revised to the mini bypass because I was told that would fix it. I'm one of the few unfortunate ones that it didn't fix and got way worse. I'm 6 days post op with a revision to rny. So far no complications and no acid reflux. If I were you I'd probably get the rny with a different surgeon than you had the first time. Good luck. -
could you eat and drink normal after bypass revision
bikerchick519 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had revision surgery Feb 3rd (6 days ago) from mgb to full bypass due to acid reflux. I have felt from the beginning I could probably drink as much as I want and don't have to take tiny sips like I did with the mgb. I even had a protein shake and some cream soup today, a day early, with no problems. The doctor said he didn't do anything to my pouch other than fix the hiatal hernia. I'm guessing that's why I'm having such an easy time drinking whatever I want. I'm not complaining but just wondering if anyone else with the same revision has had this experience. -
Sleeve complications possible revision to bypass
Ttyo posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello everyone this is probably going to be long but really could use the input. Nov 2019 I had the gastric sleeve done. Since this I have had nothing but troubles. 10 days after surgery I was admitted due to blood in my belly and a hematoma on my spleen. They fixed that and discharged 3 days later. I have not been able to eat much more then let's say a chicken nugget(less then an ounce of anything including liquids) I got dehydrated was admitted again 29 days post op. Stayed for 12 days got a picc line with tpn since I can not eat or drink much. During this stay had endoscopy and they stretched a stricture lower part of stomach to intestines from 15mm to 25ish mm. Went home no change still not able to eat. Had another endoscopy and stretch this time my stomach was twisted and she tried stretching to 30mm but was only able to get to about 28mm. Went home still no change to eating and drinking. On the 16th of January I had another endoscopy stretch. Stomach was twisted again and was barely able to stretch it at all. I aspirated during the procedure. I woke up to them telling me to keep coughing to get it up. They observed me for 3hrs was on 4liters of oxygen at first then 2. I got up to pee with help my oxygen corrected itself. They said there was no need to keep me I only aspirated a tiny amount. They let me go home (2 hr drive home) I was freezing hole way hubby cranked up heat. Took temp when I got home and found I had a fever of 102.6 went to local er where they did xray and ct found I had developed pneumonia and I also had a pulmonary embolism. They felt I should go back to hospital where this happened and I stayed there for 6 days. 5 days of iv antibiotics and heparin for embolism then discharged on lovonox to continue for 6 months to a yr. I still have no change so now its crunch time it has been 3 months since and cant eat or drink much at all. They want to do another stretch which I would need to come off the lovanox which is putting my life at risk. Not to mention I have had it done 3 times and it has not helped. Also if it doesnt work i would need to have the bypass revision which means 2 procedures putting me at risk 2 times) Surgeon says only other option is revision to bypass(unless he sees scar tissue and can fix. But i have to agree to bypass incase there is no scar tissue or it cant be fixed) My family is up in arms it's hard either way. I dont want anymore procedures but I need to get stomach fixed and I need to get back to work. 3 months no pay we cant take this financially anymore. So for me I feel like they need to do the bypass and I hope for the best and have minimal complications. However the rest of family is worried I will have more complications than I have currently. Plus my sister had bypass and has had to have 15 different repairs(this makes them more worried) I could really use some insight on this what would you do? What do you think I should do? -
Gastric sleeve revision surgery to Gastric bypass
bikerchick519 replied to Ninabnina77's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I just had a revision from mgb to full bypass on Monday Feb 3rd. I just flew home last night. I went to Dr. Illan and he and his staff are amazing. They are very good about answering all your questions and catering to your companion if you bring one. All my husbands meals were brought right to my room. The hospital is sparkling clean and very modern. You can check it out on facebook at Hospital BC. There are videos of the hospital and testimonials from patients. Dr. Illan and his staff are the best! -
Why did you choose the surgery you had/will have?
biginjapan replied to KlaPV's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I originally went with sleeve for the same reasons many have posted here - I didn't like the idea of my intestines being rerouted, I didn't want the vitamin regimen for the rest of my life, and it just seemed more extreme than what I needed. However, I'm now less than a month away from getting a revision to gastric bypass, and I try not to feel angry that I didn't do that from the start (mostly because I've paid for 2 surgeries). Unfortunately I had to self-pay in Mexico, and my experience with that is that the doctors will basically agree with what you want and rarely take the time to consider your own personal needs. I live in Japan and there really isn't any doctor or program for me to use here, so I was stuck. The reality was even though I didn't have any co-morbidities, I had 150 pounds to lose and was a sugar addict. Bypass was probably the option I should have gone with from the beginning. But now I'm getting my surgery done in Tallinn (Estonia) from a very reputable place, and one of the reasons why I chose it is because the surgeon had a very specific plan for ME, as opposed to himself, like so many other surgeons. One thing I know from my failed sleeve is that being (or having been) obese is like being an alcoholic - once one, always one (your fat cells never disappear, they just shrink, waiting to be filled again). You have to be vigilant about what your triggers are and how to avoid them. There will never be a time in the future when you can go back to how you were - it's just too easy to fall off the wagon. I know now that it's normal to always feel a little bit hungry, that if I feel full then I've eaten too much, and that I can never eat sweet things - once I start it's hard to stop. It's just better if I never start. -
My lap band had slipped and a large hiatal hernia resulted. Rather than to try to reposition the band my surgeon suggested a revision to RNY. I'm glad I took his suggestion--I'm not quite three months out and am already down 36 pounds!
-
I regained seventy pounds after my weightloss. It took me two years to lose 40lbs. Still working on the next 30. You can get a revision to RNY but first you should work on why you started eating again and how to address that. I am not on board with super restrictive dieting. It doesn't work for me. I just rebel. It is part of my eating disorder to binge if I am too restrictive. I just watch what I eat and only eat 4 times a day. This is why my weightloss has been so slow since the regain. But you need to find out what works for you. I am a big believer in out of sight, out of mind. So I do not keep any trigger foods in my house. Living with my Mom and her house of trigger foods was what caused my regain. I have to take care of her but I can not live with her. so I moved nearby. Good luck with your weightloss. If I can do it, I feel certain you can.

Advice needed regarding which surgery to get
catwoman7 replied to VRox33's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
since you have reflux, this decision should be a no-brainer. RNY. I would not even consider sleeve. P.S. I had gastric bypass for that very reason. I had GERD pre-surgery, and there's no way I wanted to risk it getting worse. I see a lot of people revising from sleeve to RNY for that very reasons - sometimes people who never even had GERD prior to surgery. I hav no regrets at all - I'm very happy with my RNY.
