Anyone here have GERD or LPR (Silent Reflux) after surgery?
yesno789 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi All, Does anyone here have GERD and/or LPR (Silent Reflux) after gastric bypass surgery? If so, can you please advise: 1. How long ago you had the gastric bypass surgery (and if you had revision from sleeve to bypass)? 2. When your symptoms of GERD and/or LPR started? 3. If you have managed to treat it? I have LPR and am struggling. So other people's experiences would be appreciated. Thanks all. -

I also paid out of pocket. I then got GERD and an upper endoscopy showed that I had a hiatal hernia. I needed a second surgery. I could either get a Linx device put in, have a hiatal hernia surgery or have a bypass. since these surgeries were now medically necessary to fix an issue they were covered. I had the hiatal hernia surgery and paid about $400 total. Don't let the possibility of a side effect scare you!! Just because the first surgery is not covered does not mean the second won't be. I could have gotten any of the three surgeries covered and went with the one that worked best with my situation. Losing weight over the past 8+ months makes the issues I dealt with more than worth it. Edit: BTW, OTC medication helped alleviate all the acid reflux symptoms. Then, the reflux was gone immediately after the HH surgery. -

I am one year out and have not had heartburn once yet. So there are definitely people on both sides of it. That being said it is a possible complication that you have to be aware of. Their is no shame in postponing your surgery if you are not ready. But I’d talk to the doctor and see if bypass is an option. I went with sleeve because I am on medication that I was worried about the absorption issues however bypass is the tried and true surgery. I would have gone with it if I wasn’t worried about my meds. -

I was really worried about GERD, but there are medication absorption issues with bypass that made me a bad candidate for that. I am six months out and have had zero issues with GERD. Before surgery I would have GERD if I overate. of course, now it's hard to overeat, but even when I feel uncomfortably full, I still don't get GERD. You might decide to wait on surgery, but if you have other health conditions, you might be at risk. Just keep in mind that surgery may not fix co-morbidities, even if the surgeon says it will. -

My BMI was 35 and the surgeon said he recommended sleeve for me and felt that bypass was overkill for me but said he would still do it if I was really adamant in getting it. Maybe if you explain your concerns your feelings would too. -

I was given the option of Sleeve vs Bypass but chose bypass because I didn't want the risk of revision if GERD and also wanted a surgery that had better statistics to back up given my history of PCOS. So have you considered of Bypass? I think out of pocket means it may little more expensive for you to get bypass but do give it a thought and do your research to ease your nerves. Also like others mentioned, you shouldn't get intimidated by certain some a experiences. If some have had not so great experience, there are also others out here who have found success and turned a new leaf in their lives. Every experience is different and not everyone is going to describe their detailed medical history here. So best option for you is to speak to your surgical team and see what they have to say about your dilemma. -

Only you can decide if the risks are worth the payoff. It is especially acute when you are self pay, which I understand because I also was self pay. I'm also afraid of GERD, but the risk for me is worth the payoff. But, I have many weight related issues and knew the surgery was key for me making a major change. I needed to in order to literally save my life and make it past 60. I also wasn't comfortable with bypass, so I am taking a calculated risk. I know that GERD is a serious risk, but will deal with that if it comes. I'll be honest - if I were your BMI I am not sure what my choice would have been but this choice is so individual it is hard to give good advice. I would definitely have a frank and honest conversation with your surgical team regarding potential risks vs. payoff. If you still are nervous, then I wouldn't do it. Maybe give yourself time to process things, and reassess in a few months. This surgery really requires that you are mentally ready for it, so if you aren't, don't do it. Good luck! -

Is there a reason you do not want to do bypass in lieu of sleeve? I started down the sleeve route and switched to bypass due to the whole GERD/hiatal hernia issue (I already suffered and did not want it to continue or get worse). -
After a forum from yesterday. The worry I had about getting GERD is a lot stronger. The thought of it happening to me scares me. When I do do acid reflux (which is not often ) it does make me sick. This is a out of pocket surgery for me. My insurance doesn't cover wls. So I can't afford this surgery and then have to pay to get bypass if I get GERD. My mood now is so different. I was so happy I made the decision to get the surgery. And after yesterday today I'm scared and sad. I need positive thoughts ❤️

Other reasons for surgery

constipation is MUCH more common than diarrhea - for both bypass and sleeve patients. diarrhea is more an issue for people who have the duodenal switch surgery. -

Hi, PB&J! Dr. Cronk did my sister's gastric bypass surgery 3 years ago this July and he did an amazing job! They are both very experienced plus since it's the robotic laparoscopic bypass it's a fast recovery and not much pain at all. We are both very happy that we did the bypass. Hope this helps to put you at ease a bit! -

I just had a bypass done 3 weeks ago. So, I'm new, but I am not in the bathroom a lot. I have 2 bm's a day. I had problems with constipation right after surgery, but since then no issues. I haven't had to run to make it either. So, pretty normal. -
I used to be on here back in 2012, I had the Lap Band done, but last year had to have it removed. Not sure if it was Covid or all the issues I had before and after surgery this past year but I have now ended with Gastroparesis. Or slow/ delayed emptying. My Gastro is sending me to weight loss surgery as I think he said the Bypass seems to help the problem. I fit the bill for weight loss surgery with out this issue, BMI, diabetes etc. . My question involves digestion. Does anyone know how it affects the bowels ? I don’t want to live in the bathroom . Did that almost a year Now try to eat soft foods that will digest quickly and hopefully not cause staying in the John. It seems if you only eat a cupful - it would move in a few minutes if you are missing part of your intestines. I’m not sure, I would appreciate any information on this. Thanks

Hi PB&J, I had my one week post-op appointment today. I don’t even feel like I had a surgery. I’m a little bit tired, but that’s all. I think they do many, many surgeries and have plenty of experience. I’m sorry for your disappointment regarding the sleeve, but it’s much better to know that it’s not a good option. I had the sleeve and ended up with the upper chest pain of GERD without actually having reflux. This surgery was a revision to bypass. One surgery is better than two, lol. -

I had my first consultation with Dr. Cronk on Wednesday, he seems nice. I had my gastrointestinal testing today, he already messaged me to let me know that the sleeve isn't going to be a good option for me based on the results. I'm going to do the bypass instead, but I'm extremely nervous. I had my heart set on the sleeve. He said they do 75% bypass and 25% sleeve, so I suppose they're experienced with it. Thanks for sharing your experience with this office, it makes me feel better somehow! Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Vegetarian meat substitutes
fourmonthspreop replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I dont think it'll be hard at all. I'm tolerating pea and soy protein well. Here's how I'm getting over 80 grams of protein a day in soft foods: Breakfast: Siggis simple ingredients protein yogurt (15 grams) Lunch: yellow squash and 3.5 oz of impossible meat made into a meatball (16 grams) Dinner: 2 oz of refried beans, 1 tbspn of sour cream (4 grams) Snacks: thin slice of Provolone cheese (3 grams) and the big Kahuna, a protein shake made with 2 scoops of isopure and almond milk (use soy for extra protein). (50 grams) ...total for the day= 88 grams of plant based proteins! You can switch this up too. Do an omelet, scrambled eggs, tofu scramble, stir fry tofu and other low carb vegetarian meat subs. I was scared at first to try vegetarian meat substitutes but as long as theyre not super breaded and you chew them really well, they seem to be working. My dietician approved of them too! Everyone tolerates food differently after surgery but so far so good. Best of luck. I did my gastric bypass a month ago and I still will not go back to eating meat ever again. Issue of GERD with sleeve is definitely there. There are also some surgical complications that would hover our heads. But that is the reason why surgeons and doctors opt for surgery on the "pros outweighs the cons" concept. If you're worried of sleeve giving your GERD, look at the bypass option. Bypass is even used for long term GERD cure. There are also people on the forum who have had revision from sleeve to bypass because of GERD. So it isn't like you're stuck with having GERD for lifetime. You can do your research on bypass or if your mind is set on VSG, ask your doctor the options of PPI, revision to bypass etc etc etc if you end up with GERD-y complication. Good luck.

Hey! I'm about one month post op (gastric bypass feb 14). I've only lost about 23 lbs post op. I was at 309 when I went in for surgery. I think my weight was like 314 right after surgery because of all the fluids though. Anyway I'm getting annoyed because I've been in between 287 and 286 for the last 2 weeks. I am eating more calories now but not nearly enough to gain or even stall. I have about 700-800 calories a day right now. Is this normal to stall out so early? I try incorporating exercise in my daily routine but I'm still dealing with a lot of fatigue and lightheadedness from anemia so I feel terrible whenever I really exert myself. Any advice or tips? Thanks! Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

AMEN. And women get if at a far higher percentage - so 35% is a bit low for us ladies. My biggest mistake was coming on here before surgery and only wanting to hear the success stories. I wish I would have asked - "are you currently on any reflux medications?" You'd be surprised by how many people are on high doses of PPI's and singing the surgery praises. I'm a 17 year vet, I know the truth, and I was a lucky one - I didn't have it so bad that I had to get a bypass. These early praisers might not have experienced the PPI side effects yet. The iron infusions, the emergency room visits for kidney stones, the energy crashes, the daily nausea, etc. You can't undo or fix or medicate this...I've been searching for years. Listen - my sister is "fat" like I was. She didn't have the surgery. She is still fat, and is prediabetic...but her last 17 years have full and happy. She's enjoyed life, traveled, enjoyed her career, found and maintained a loving husband, enjoyed life with her children, etc. Here laugh is real, and deep ... I miss having that. I couldn't play with my kids a lot - too tired. I couldn't enjoy eating with them - not really. I was in the emergency room this christmas with kidney stones - again. Several times in the ER when my iron plummeted and needed an infusion (I take all my vitamins - doesn't matter). I vomited out the window on my husbands birthday because my PPI failed and I forgot my tums. If I could trade my size 2 body for her size 24, I would in a heartbeat. I sometimes get someone saying "aren't you glad you got the surgery - you'd be like your sister if you didn't". They always get a shocking earful. Now if you are unable to get out of bed, or walk, or function - get the surgery!!!! But be careful of the cheerleaders, especially those who are still trying to convince themselves that they "made the right choice". Many here are freshly out and still in the honeymoon stage. I remember that stage - lol.

True that. My surgeon gave me the bypass because I already had issues with GERD pre op. He said if there's certain foods that give you acid pre op like coffee, tomatoes, citrus the sleeve is going to make it worse...at least the chances are incredibly high. I'm scheduled for surgery and acid reflux after surgery is what scares me more then anything else. I only get it now after drinking coffee or going a long time with out eating. After reading these regrets 🤦♀️ And after reading your reply I'm now wondering. Is there a medication that will help acid reflux after surgery (if it happens to me) or is the gastric bypass the only way to correct it?

I only mentioned the support part because it happens. If you read this thread, you'll get an understanding what, we the weight loss surgery patients often deal with from those closest to us. And also this calculator for weight loss surgery can give you a guesstimate of what she might weigh when her body settles on its new weight. https://www.obesitycoverage.com/weight-loss-surgeries/gastric-bypass/how-much-can-i-expect-to-lose I plugged in her info and it says at 18 months out, 20% of sleeve patients weigh 185. Check it out for yourself. Just make sure you're looking at the correct surgery. It gives options for Band, Bypass and Sleeve.
