  1. I am 5 months out and just now have started to lose my hair -- I was hoping to not have to go through this experience - luckily I have very thick hair, and so no one else really notices it -- I'm not sure how long it lasts; I'm hoping not long. I am going to start taking Andrew Lessman's Skin, Hair and Nail Vitamins and see if that helps slow or stop the process. I am sure others on this site will have stories/suggestions of their own to help you out. For me, the surgery would still be totally worth it even if I end up bald - that's what wigs are for!

What to expect in the hospital

I stayed two nights in hospital. The only thing I used was Chapstick. Hospital had everything else (toothbrush and paste, lotion etc). I left in the same clothes I came in (loose fitting). I did bring my iPad but just used my time resting and healing and walking. Best of Luck on this incredible life saving journey.

What to expect in the hospital

I had RNY on 8-17. I stayed in the hospital one night. Things I loved having were chapstick, my slippers (they were great to have walking the halls after surgery) and a pillow from home. I would also suggest loose fitting clothes to wear home. Good luck!!

Does Anyone With A Sleeve Run?

I have been training for a 1/2 marathon since July. I hadn't run at all prior to July. I actually ran 14 miles this past Saturday. The 1/2 marathon I am training for is January 30th. I love it! I will say that as the miles have gotten higher it is difficult to fuel my body and continue to lose weight. I am having a hard time getting the carb ratio right. At this point, I am focusing on my race and being fueled for it. I can also say that the muscles from running are really helping with the sagging skin. Next up for me is a sprint triathlon in August and a full marathon next October. You will definitely be able to run as a post-VSGer. Good luck! Amanda
  5. I apologize if this sounds naive or silly. But I have a few questions, I haven't decided about surgery yet. What happens to the staples? Will they ever get loose, nick other organs or possible get loose and travel through intestines? What meds are typically prescribed after surgery, i saw a blood thinner injection is one. Silly questions

I personally have never heard of dissolving staples. I have only ever heard of surgical staples that just remain with you forever. The scar line from where the stomach heals basically grows over them. From what my surgeon said it is not possible for them to come loose. Some Drs require blood thinners for a few days as a preventative measure to prevent blood clots. Most Drs send the patient home on pain meds, anti nausea meds, and an acid blocker.

    Anyway to prevent sagging skin???

my doc said the two main things that contribute to whether or not you will have loose skin is age and if you are a smoker. People who smoke have way less elasticity in their skin so they are more likely to have loose skin. But he also said there is no way to know no matter who you are. But bieng older and a smoker will pretty much guarantee you will have loose skin.

    Anyway to prevent sagging skin???

Age, genes, length of time you've been obese - factors into how saggy your skin will be.

    Anyway to prevent sagging skin???

Hmmm. I am a smoker. I dont have any sagging skin anywhere yet. I have that tummy roll that I will definitely get rid of (via tummy tuck?), but the skin looks great on my arms and legs, neck, ab, etc... Maybe I am just lucky. I personally think the factors that affect how your skin will bounce back are how severly overweight you were, for how long, and genetics.
  10. You may or may not lose some hair due to the surgery and you will probably have some loose skin, especially if you lose a significant amount of weight. The best thing you can do is to stay hydrated and get in all of your Protein, take your Vitamins and supplements as directed, and exercise. Biotin may help with hair regrowth but probably won't prevent hair loss which is due to the shock of surgery and anesthesia.
  11. Bring a throw blanket. I had my surgery in June and was still cold. A blanket, pillow, robe, and long loose PJ dress were most helpful during hospital stay. Oh and my wonderful husband who helped me up and down to bathroom and back to bed. Hope this helps Sent from my SM-G360T using the BariatricPal App

    New To The Site

I am 28 yrs old 5 ft and I weigh 185 lbs. I am just starting to gather information. Im not even sure if BCBS Anthem will cover this. But I do plan on calling them tomorrow to find out. I have neen trying to loose weight for as long as I can remember. What is some advice on this procedure that yall can give me
  13. Welcome! I know it's scary and yes it's a huge decision. It sounds like you have done a lot of work on yourself mentally and I think that's a major key to sucsess in this process. You are right, it's your decision who to tell and not tell about your surgery. I told one person, my mother, and that's it. If anyone asks how I am loosing the weight I just tell them I have committed to a high Protein, low carb lifestyle. When you come home after surgery you will be sore and on different stages of dietary restrictions....I don't see how you can keep that from your teenagers. I think they will notice, so in my opinion it might be a good idea to have a talk with them. You might be surprised at how happy they will be that you decided to become a fit, active and healthy mom. This was the best decision, my only regret is not having it done about 10 years ago. Keep coming to this forum, ask a lot of questions. You will do great!
  14. Anyone have UMR? I wanted to know how long the process may take with UMR? Also my bmi is 40.5 if I loose weight preop will that affect my approval for insurance? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  15. These questions are for those of you who have had your band for awhile (years) or people who know more from their research or medical backgrounds. When people say they are at their "sweet spot" or "green zone", what exactly does that mean? I've read where people say they ate a tiny bit and then had to push their plate away - couldn't eat another bite. Is this because they are feeling full or they know if they eat more it won't be pretty? In September, I will have had my band for 3 years. Still juggling with fills, unfills, too loose, too tight. Lost a lot but gained most of it back (need to update ticker). Second question. Does anyone ever get a gnawing feeling in their band region. It's not heartburn - not really painful - uncomfortable. I recently had a LOT of fluid removed from my band. Went back - band looks great and they put most of what they took out back in. Minute I started eating/drinking - the gnawing was back. I will ask my Dr. but in the meantime - was wondering if anyone else had this/heard of it/know what it is. Thank you for any help you can give me. Frustrated and discouraged!!!

    Any NJ buddies out there?

I'm from south jersey , would live to talk!!! Had my surgery last December. I am at a stand still but I was on the smaller side and didn't need a lot to lose. Lost about 47, need to loose 15 more! Look and feel a whole lot better than last year!
  17. I would be scared of a surgeon willing to do surgery on you when if you lost 30 pounds you would be in a normal bmi. normally surgery is for people with close to 100 to loose. I'm sure you know that though, but maybe consider another method I would hate for you to undergo a major surgery to loose 30 pounds Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  18. You won't find people here just telling you what you want to hear. And that's a good thing! For some of us, enabling has played a huge part in how we ended up needing surgery! Knowing that you're thin skinned and realizing that maybe you just wanted to hear certain things are really good things to recognize in yourself. Everyone here genuinely wants to see people be successful. Sometimes it's hard to step back and realize that everyone has a different communication style. I've almost never seen anything posted that was purely out of malice though. Stay, ask questions, look around at other forums [emoji4]

    Surgery on Tuesday

I would not advise ordering Protein prior to surgery. My tastes completely changed after my surgery. I have six huge containers of Protein powder and I can only stomach two of them now. Everybody has a personal experience of their own, so don't quote me on any of this, haha! It's much more important to get your fluids in when you are newly post-op, so stock up on SF Jello, popsicles, etc. Try protein carefully as you are allowed, but get ready for really small portions. You won't need much at the hospital, but have some chapstick ready. I was catered to like a princess, so I only needed loose, comfortable clothing and my own pillow for the trip home. I hope you're treated as well as I was. Just remember why you are doing this and follow your surgeon's guidelines strictly. They know how to keep you safe and healthy. Best wishes to you on your journey!!

  21. Hi all. I am on day 5 of my pre-op liquids and I am having loose stools. Is that due to all of the liquid I am taking in? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  22. If you think about it everyone who is overweight has felt discriminated at some point by either others or themselves they just have to stop to think about it. Consider this if there was no weight discrimination then there wouldn't be so many words to describe weight. I always hate looking at the BMI because I work so hard to loose weight and I feel isn't it bad enough that I am overweight I mean why do they have to add all these degrees of fatness. I mean overweight, obese, extremely obese, morbidly obese and now new bariatric journals are adding a new category called super obese. I have losted 100 pounds and are still considered morbidly obese how is that for motivation. Jessica

    Magnesium Citrate Day

I had to do this the night before my surgery. It worked in about 30 minutes. Slept through the night, woke up with some light cramping and had another loose movement. Make sure to drink a ton of water.
  24. For some odd reason I just cannot loose weight on this pre op liquid diet. If I do not loose the weight they are going to reschedule my surgery or possibly cancel it. I take antidepressants. I have no idea if that could be the problem. Can someone help? Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

I do wear compression garments it does help with the lose skin but I want the tummy tuck badly. Cause I want to feel comfortable when I take my clothes off. The blob ( my tummy skin) is too much and makes me feel like I didn't lose weight at all.
