Ugggg, I forgot how much the preop diet sucks. I'm being revised from a lapband to gastric bypass on July 6. My band has been unfilled since December, so I've been able to eat normally since then. My current surgeon has me doing two weeks of shake for breakfast, shake for lunch, healthy choice steamer for dinner. Last time I did all liquids, staying under 20 grams of carbs, but it was only for a week. From what I remember, the first days of the preop diet are the worst and then I kinda got numb and it wasn't so bad. But I'm in the thick of it now. And staring down two full week of this is daunting. I made it last time, I'll make it this time, but just uggg.

My VSG revision to GBP went smoothly. Arrived at 8:45 am and went home at 6 pm. I was happy not to stay overnight because it’s hard to sleep and every time you do sleep, the nurses want to wake you up. Unfortunately sleeping at home wasn’t much better. I couldn’t get comfortable. Pain is tolerable, more uncomfortable. Gas seems barely there. I was able to belch a bunch before I left to hospital. Goal today is to get my liquids in. Hope everyone is else is doing well.

What do you wish you knew before having surgery in Mexico?
Christina1985 replied to Klumzyfule66's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
At Renew Bariatrics they do bypass and gastric and some ball one...🤔 and the band. Most ppl get gastric (they even have mini gastric) or sleeve. Renew is right across the boarder too. Literally a 7 min drive once through the boarder. I was anti Mexico but omg these guys are AMAZING! Can't express that enough. Best decision ever. Anyway. Gotta go weigh myself 🥳🙏 -
What do you wish you knew before having surgery in Mexico?
liveaboard15 replied to Klumzyfule66's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
i did not have my surgery in mexico. I wanted to be close to home but after researching mexico. The one place that stood out beyond the rest was ENDOHOSPITAL with Dr Alvarez. Its such a nice hospital, Just a stones throw from the border and he is a USA educated doctor. If i would have went the mexico route i would have chosen him. Tho he only does sleeves. So if you were looking into bypass then it would not work with him. -
Only about 30% of bypass patients dump. From what I understand Even those that do can often have small amounts of sugar without dumping. It’s possible you would dump on a larger amount of sugar, but also very possible you never will.

Mine was June 8…gastric bypass. I did modified liquid (read occasional cheating) starting 3 weeks before. More modified liquid (almost no cheating) 2 weeks before. 100% compliant liquid -not even the thought of cheating- one week before. Two days before surgery, it was difficult, but I attribute of that to nerves. i am 2 weeks post op tomorrow. liquids since June 10 when I got home. I’m not hungry, and I feel better than I have in 25 years. I am meeting my liquid and Protein goals. good luck to you! -

Pre-surgery in the era of telemedicine
Mariann812 replied to vikingbeast's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My experience has been completely different from the ones I read above. I’m in Wake County NC, and if coming here for surgery is an option, I would suggest exploring that option. I began the process in January with research and my surgery was June 8, 2022. My initial ZOOM consult with the Patient Administrator and the surgeon lasted 2 hours: 30 minutes with PA and 90 minutes with the surgeon. I went through EXTENSIVE pre-procedure testing: physically and psychologically. A massive hiatal hernia was diagnosed, and I was screened by a cardiologist (also extensive) before everything was sent to my insurance company. I also had a sleep study and a CPAP machine was prescribed. I went to a nutrition introduction and the nutritionist has been there since February to answer every question. I had a nutrition meeting 1 week prior to surgery, and the nutritionist conducted another class while I was in the hospital and came to see me 2 mornings in the hospital and I have another class in a week. The hospital and practice I used are CIGNA Bariatric Centers For Excellence. They practice ERAS- Enhanced Recovery After Surgery. I was never given narcotics…only a nerve block and two mild pain meds prior to surgery. I did not need any pain medication either post op or when I came home. The care I received was absolutely top notch from beginning to end. The hospital staff was superb. If this is an option for anyone, I recommend it without hesitation. I am 67 years old and I intend to lose 100 lbs. i underwent a hernia repair for a massive hiatal hernia, my gallbladder was removed and I had gastric bypass. Hope this helps someone. -
Weight loss expectations VSG to RNY??
SOHLCRU replied to mi75's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Well I had my nutrionist appointment yesterday and there is a different process for revisions. So from my understanding I'll have to have an EGD done to see the effects of the GERD. Then I have to meet with the surgeon and see if I qualify. So far since I have written the original post I have lost 10lbs and will just keep on trying my best. So hopefully I'll get some more clarity within the next few weeks. -
How Long After Having A Stroke Did You Have To Wait For Weight Loss Surgery?
Weightloss55 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m 45 and healthy (just overweight - 40 BMI) until I had a stroke on 6/8 2 caused by tiny hole in my heart that never closed after birth. I’m doing well and expect to be cleared by by the neurologist and cardiologist in July. My surgeon understandably cancelled my 6/29 gastric bypass. However, he says I have to wait 6 months to reschedule due to safety concerns. With such, I’ll have to redo some of the process and may not get the surgery this year. I’ve already met my insurance deductible and out of pocket maximum - making surgery free if done by 12/31. Has anyone been in this or similar situation? Thanks! -
Hello Melissa4444, I am now 11 weeks postop gastric bypass. My surgeon just cleared me to have caffeine last week. I would recommend starting back on caffeine slowly though. On the first day last week that I tried regular coffee around lunchtime, I really felt the effects and had difficulty falling asleep that night. Now, I just limit my caffeine intake to the morning hours. Of course, everyone is different. Maybe your team will have a different position on caffeine and when/if you restart, it will be a different experience for you.

Why can’t I have caffeine after bariatric bypass? And if I can drink it again, when can I start drinking it?

Rny patients....& Taste change

At almost 2 years post revision I still can’t walk down the baking aisle or the candy aisle at the grocery store because the smell of sugar really bothers me so anything I need for baking I have to order for pickup. After my sleeve I couldn’t drink anything besides protein shakes and grape powderade zero and I hated anything artificial grape before surgery. After my revision from GERD thankfully that went away and I could enjoy actual water again! Everything else though was just temporary but I do find I enjoy baby kale now. -
Rny patients....& Taste change

It’s funny you say that I had the mini gastric bypass and stuff smells more intense now. For example I can’t stomach chicken or even ground turkey..it just smells awful. There are other things that I could not get enough of before surgery that I don’t even think about now… like milk chocolate or cheesecake. I’m glad because I really thought they would be my demise in all of this but I haven’t wanted either. -

Bypass. Where in MD are you from, I am in Baltimore! -
I feel the same way. My gastric bypass was January 24th and I've lost 70 lbs. And it's sooo hard not to compare myself to other people. Especially when they've lost much more. *sigh* Still hanging in there though. We got this!

April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Surgery is June 23. Gastric bypass. Highest weight, 270 July 2021. Current weight 188 with 4 more days to go on my liquid diet. Height 5'6" BMI 30 (barely). Age 65. Why am I going through with surgery after losing 82 lbs pre-op? Statistics show that I will have a much better chance at keeping my weight off vs a 2-5% chance without the surgery . I'm tired of fighting obesity! I went on a weight loss mission, pre-op, to reduce my risk of post op complications and to train myself for life with my new anatomy. I'm ready! -
The 1st couple of weeks can be really hard. Your body just went through a great big shock! It will be easier I promise! Between prescriptions & supplements I take an lot of pills. I use the patchMD vitamins. They might cost a little but for me not having to swallow one more big pill pie worth or & my labs have always been great. I take a multil, B12 & a D. I think it’s the bypass set. Things will get better I promise!

I'm 4 months and some post op from gastric bypass. I average about 950 calories a day although some days I can barely reach 700 and others I can have 1200. It just depends on my restriction. I always aim for 60-80 grams of protein but im happy if I can get 60 in a day. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

Cake, ice cream, pizza…farewell forever?
fourmonthspreop replied to Rockmantic78's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
This is true. I'm 4 months post of from bypass. I dumped once after eating honey butter and some french fries...Sugar and fat put me in double jeopardy lol I avoid sugar like the plague because I don't want to dump. I can still eat pizza though in moderation. I don't eat it often but my dietician says as long as I'm getting in my protein, and staying in a calorie deficit, eat pizza! Broke my stall and hit 91 lb weight loss today! So close to the 100 club! Now wearing a womans XL top (was 3/4x prior and 22 pants). I actually bought my first pair of size 34 jeans last week. Still don't believe it. The pic in the black shirt was a couple weeks pre op, I was prob about 315 lbs there...249 today. Had my bypass in February so there's still a bit left to lose but I'm finally feeling energetic and happy. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Cake, ice cream, pizza…farewell forever?
catwoman7 replied to Rockmantic78's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
nope. Once you're a few months out, restrictions will be lifted. There may be foods that you find your stomach won't be able to tolerate, but there will be no restrictions. I can eat all of those things - cake, pizza, sherbet - even real ice cream. about 30% of bypassers "dump", so they have to limit their sugar intake (or for some, fat). But most dumpers I know can eat "some" sugar (or fat). 70% of us do not dump. I never have (unfortunately, I might add...if I did, it would have stopped me from eating that cup of ice cream last night (which is just an occasional treat for me now, but still...))
