Did you have the sleeve or the bypass? Do you know your fasting insulin versus before / after for your IR? Sent from my Pixel 6 using BariatricPal mobile app
  2. Hello all! I didn’t see a May thread started yet for bypass. I’m scheduled for RNY May 24, 2022.

    Kept it Quiet?

Hi! I am new to this forum, and have been working on all my pre-op stuff in order for surgery in June. I was wondering if anyone decided not to tell anyone about bypass surgery except their significant other (who supports my choice 100%). I just don't know if my family would be as supportive. I feel like they would think that surgery was the "easy way" etc. I am not sure I want that negativity. I am asking if the support of 1 or 2 people is enough to keep you motivated or if I should just tell my family.

    May 2022 surgery?

Gastric bypass is set for May 16th. Hopefully that won’t get delayed. I’ve been having some stomach issues, and my primary doctor is wary about approving me for surgery until we find out what’s going on. I can’t wait!
  5. Well everyone is different so I can only talk about my own experience. I got sleeved in Dec 2016 and lost about 120 lbs in about 6 months. I had GERD before sleeve and still had it after, felt about the same. I took PPI once every morning. I slowly began to regain for various reasons, until I was almost back to where I started. I got revision to bypass this past November and am down over 75 lbs so far. Also my GERD is gone. My only regrets are not following the program in the first place, and not getting the revision sooner.

    Post op necessities

I was allowed tea and coffee from the time I woke up. It would always go cold before I could drink it and I hate cold coffee so I bought a thermos cup. I had my sleeve done in the freezing cold English November. I was so cold all the time so I was glad of a extra duvet for the sofa. I wished I had a recliner chair because I couldn't sleep laying down for 3 weeks, had I known I would have bought one from a charity shop. I have little rice bowls that I used for soup, yogurt and instant porridge. My usual bowls would have been ridiculously large for the tiny amount I could eat in the first weeks. The only other things I bought were lip balm, gummy vitamins and soluble calcium. Good luck

What was your "this is it" moment

My turning point was when we went on our usual walk with the dogs in November 2021. I was struggling and out of breath on a small incline and had to stop. My ankles and hips were throbbing. I started crying and my husband was all worried like I was gonna pass out. I said “I’m just having a melt down right now because of what I’ve done to my body. I need to cry it out.” I cried the whole way home. I started Googling weight loss surgery in December. I was surprised that I actually qualified because when I looked into it 5 years ago, my BMI was too low. So I figured this was a sign that it was meant to be.

    Vyvanse after surgery

VSG typically does not cause malabsorption because the pyloric valve is left intact and not bypassed (such as with RNY/MGB/DS). So it generally does not interfere with meds. That being said, you should absolutely check with your prescribing doctor and your surgeon to be sure. Additionally, as you lose weight, you may need to have your dose adjusted. Hope that helps!

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hello everyone, This is my first post. My gastric bypass surgery is 4/5/22. It is great to have such a supportive community on this site. I have really appreciated reading everyone's posts. So, thanks to everyone for their words of wisdom!
  13. Hi, I am 13 days PO gastric bypass. For the first 12 days I could barely drink a little more than an oz in 15 mins. This morning for breakfast I was able to drink 11oz in 30 mins and not feel full. For lunch, I just had some soup and I was able to eat 9oz in 30 mins. I don’t feel “stuffed” but I am having heart palpations. Has anyone experienced this? is this normal ?
  14. I received gastric sleeve surgery back in 2014. After finding out that I have another hernia and bad acid reflux and some weight gain I was informed to look into the bypass. I just received my approval for a June surgery date and I’m terrified. Has anyone else gone through something similar if so do you have any advice?

Now thinking if canceling surgery 🥺

Actually being seeing a couple of surgeons reporting only 10% incidence of GERD after sleeve lately. I always thought it was around that 30/35% mark too. Maybe something has changed in the surgical techniques they use??? Or they are more vigilant of recommending bypass to those who are more likely to develop GERD with a sleeve???

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

I’m scheduled 4/14 for revision from sleeve to bypass. Much more nervous about this surgery than sleeve I had in 2013.

    Regrets...anyone?

I'm post op Lap Band removal, but pre op for Gastric Bypass. I suppose I regret not having it removed sooner instead of living with GERD for several years. I mean I lost a lot of weight with its help, but I regret not making a better choice when I chose Lap Band. I was trying to go the less invasive route, but it never led me down a path that allowed me to lose all of the weight I wanted to, then GERD happened. I never thought I was a candidate for Gastric Bypass due to certain health issues. But then GERD forced my hand to consider it, and well... here I am pre op for RNY, so I sort of feel the same way Pollito does, I wish I would've made a change sooner rather than wait. Life may have been different for me for the last ten or so years.

    Regrets...anyone?

I don't regret getting the lap band twenty years ago. I weighed 315 lbs. & wanted to get down to about 150 lbs. I got down to around 190 & I felt great! I've had issues with the band & had to have all the saline removed & regained some of the weight so I'm back up to 240. In some ways, I wish I had gotten a gastric bypass but I wasn't ready. I had kids & wasn't comfortable with getting such a radical surgery when they were so young. I made the best decision at the time. Most doctors don't do the band anymore but it has helped me a lot even if I'm having some trouble with it now. Sent from my Pixel 4a using BariatricPal mobile app
  19. I am 5 months post op rny bypass and do not have a uterus anymore, but still have my ovaries. I noticed that from around the 20th till around the 1st of the next month my weightloss stalls. I am assuming I am on my cycle. Do those of you whom have ovaries and/or a cycle notice this also?

VSG to RNY - Not excited

And we had no clue of your bias 😂 Complications for MGB and RYN may be similar since they both deal with bypass aspect. MGB may be more cuz of higher amount of bypass? As for reversible aspect, surgeons don't advise reversing any such procedure unless of course needed. Even with RYN, reversing is possible since your bypassed stomach is still within you. As for higher weight loss, I think it comes from the fact that more intestine is bypassed than RYN. But eventually they both do provide substantial weight loss overall.
  22. Hello all, has anyone had any luck with getting their secondary insurance to pay for their surgery when the primary doesn't cover it? My employer provided healthcare insurance is Florida Blue & it sucks. There's an exclusion for everything related to bariatric surgery - no band, balloon, gastric bypass, sleeve, revision, or repair of previous surgeries. My secondary insurance, BCBS Michigan, covers everything. It's a great plan and I hardly had to pay for anything when I got the lapband 20 years ago. I've had trouble with the band & I want to get it removed. I would like to get a revision to a gastric bypass so I don't regain all the weight I lost. I've made some calls to surgeons & was told by one insurance coordinator that if my primary rejects paying for it then my secondary won't pay for it because that's "coordination of benefit". Arrrghh I'm going to see a surgeon in a couple weeks. I haven't seen a bariatric doctor in 10 years (my bad). [emoji44][emoji38] I had talked myself out of the fear of getting a revision to a bypass & now it seems that I can't get it. I'm so mad at my employer for providing minimal, crappy insurance & that having secondary insurance doesn't help at all. Background: I'm 5'5 & 240 now. I was 5'6 & 315 in 2002 when I got the band. I got down to 195 but had saline removed 10 years ago after having some problems. Now I have GERD & some other issues. Sent from my Pixel 4a using BariatricPal mobile app

My Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is scheduled for April 20th!!
  24. Hi there! My pre op diet still allowed vegetables and I found that pickles and olives were my new best friends! Just had my gastric bypass surgery 3/30 and I'm still recovering. Hope this helps you!
  25. Seventeen years ago my wife had GBS and for a while she was doing awesome she was losing the weight following her program eating only what was allowed and exercising this went on for at least 2-3 years then it all hit her between the eyes she was sick all the time throwing up and dumping pretty much everything she was eating she couldn't even drink the protein shakes the food was going right through her, our marriage was on the brink because we could not do anything as a couple because she had to stay close to the bathroom just in case, so one day i said you need to see a doctor and her being so sick this went on for about 6 months so we made the appt and the doctor said it was normal and to get some rest and just go back to eating like you did when you got out of the hospital , so she did and it got a little better and a little better than one night she looked at me and said " i didn't get sick today Hun" i didn't even realize it until she mentioned it so we agreed that maybe we should just stay with the shakes for a little while longer (3 or 4 more days) and try to eat something like ground up chicken she tried that and it stayed down basically a real long story but she started feeling much better and started eating better and the dr didn't know what it was but he said what all drs say when they don't have an answer " i don t know Mrs. Cooper" anyway all i cared about at that point in my life is my wife getting better nothing else to this day she still has bouts of dumping and getting sick nothing like those yrs ago , not even close , when she does get sick i think back to all those years ago i go right back there and lose focus on what's important and that's her and not me and how i feel it's about how she feels i can only imagine she must think not again, well i am going to end here cause i could go on but i would rather not rehash those horrible days seventeen yrs ago.
