    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

I'm one day before you April 6 and was just given my surgery time. 3 days liquid diet for me with eight days of 1000 calories. I've ordered my vitamins. Bought broths, jello and such already. Trying to get myself mentally and physically prepared. I'm also having the gastric sleeve. I've taken my before measurements and pictures too. Also got appointments out of the way. dentist, eye exam, hair cut, etc... Yes, I am a planner. [emoji23] Sent from my Lenovo YT-X705F using BariatricPal mobile app
  2. As Catwoman7 said it depends upon how much weight you have to lose. Other factors can influence the loss as well. Some are your own choices & actions & others are physiological factors & how your body reacts to the surgery & the changes to diet & activity. I reached my goal at 6 months but continued to lose for another 11 months (at a much slower rate of course) because I was finding it challenging to eat enough to stop the loss. My metabolism was still running pretty fast then too (wish it still ran that fast) & your metabolic set point will influence when your weight loss stops. Because as time passes we are able to eat larger portions (equal to recommended serving sizes) so too your calories increase & the weight loss stops. Also just general lifestyle choices. Some people are happy for their loss to stop at a higher weight than they first thought they’d reach simply because they didn’t want to continue to make food choices that restricted or limited their lifestyle.

    Deiabetic

I was taken off metformin but honestly I wish I could be back on it. I eat about 400-600 calories a day and my blood sugar runs higher than it should most of the day. I still use insulin, just bolus now when previous I was on both basal and bolus. My A1c is lower but again that’s due to food quantity. I’ve hit these same numbers before when my eating disorder was active. 🤷‍♀️ I have the same insulin sensitivity and carb ratios as before the surgery. So if I actually ate any carbs, I need insulin. Also when I had my second surgery to remove my gallbladder my blood sugar was very high for days. Basically everything is the same as it was before.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I am slowly advancing myself to the puree stage a day or so early. Yesterday, I had a sweet and spicy tuna packet - tolerated well. Then I got carried away and ate small bits of watermelon, apparently too fast. Because restriction hit and I was so uncomfortable. I couldn't eat another bite of anything for the rest of the night. I couldn't even handle water. I am going to love this! I was so uncomfortable but I never want my pouch to expand beyond what it is now. So I won't be doing that again. But I did go buy some real crab meat (I am craving crab legs like no other), imitation crab meat, salmon, perch, all stuff for ricotta bake, tuna packets, chicken salad packets (these packets are perfect for on the go). I'm so excited to eat today. I've also ordered Unjury pre-made protein shakes. They're tasty and convenient. 8oz serving size has 110 calories and 20g protein. How are you guys doing on your vitamins? Have you started? I found a huge uptick in my overall energy and feeling when I started taking iron again. I use a liquid supplement called Floradix, 10ml in the AM and 10ml before bed - taken with vitamin C. Then taking my calcium chews throughout the bulk of the day - at least 2 hours apart from the iron. They've also sent me a powerful multi-vitamin and sublingual 500mg tabs of B12.
  5. Yup mine didn't start falling out till the 6 month mark. My brush is full of hair this morning, going on 8 months. No bald spots but it is thinning for now. I also have met my protein and vitamins. I sure hope it grows back after I up my calories on maintenance... Sent from my SM-S908U using BariatricPal mobile app

    This is all overwhelming

there are a lot of food restrictions the first few months, but after that, there are none. That's not to say that there might be some foods you can't handle anymore - because there might be - but your clinic will lift all food restrictions once you're a few months out. I eat pretty much the same things I ate before surgery (except for heavy, fat-laden meals), but in smaller portions than I did before. P.S. I should add that I was a pretty healthy eater even before surgery - I just ate way too much. If you eat a lot of empty calories now - like pastries, cake, etc - then yes - that will change. But I still enjoy some of those things occasionally.

    This is all overwhelming

It’s true that you will not look at food the same way but not in a bad way. Not all but most people lose their hunger hormones for a while so it is easier to make some changes to the way you eat. You will learn to think of food more in terms of what nourishment it can provide you. It’s honestly been a good thing for me. I can still have, In moderation, the treats that I used to enjoy on occasion but for the most part I look to food in terms of energy and what it does for my body. I am one year out and I can eat anything I ate pre op though I just eat much smaller portions and I don’t have the empty calories nearly as often.

    Clear protein drink

FYI: If you mix protein powder with more than the 8oz of liquid it thins it out and doesn't have the shake consistency. Example: I am so sick of shakes but I am pre-op so I have to suck it up. But 2 of my shakes a day are to be mixed with calorie free liquid rather than milk. So, I found crystal lite lemonade and strawberry protein powder to be delicious. But, I was getting tired of the "shake" so I tried to add more lemonade. I used 10 oz lemonade and my normal 1 scoop powder and it is nice and thin. Just like drinking actual lemonade. Post op- you get more of your fluids and still get the protein too!
  9. If it looks like I didn’t eat much of my salad, you would be right. Not that i was full or anything…just not in the mood today. Will try again later. 489 calories for the bowl. P.S. I put my “I’m sorry” flowers from Mr. in the background cuz they’re just so purty 😂

    Weight loss stall

If you are very heavy, you need a lot more calories to NOT be in a calorie deficit. 2800 calories would be if a thin person ran a marathon. If you are heavier, you burn more calories with exercise. Plus, I didn't say it was all fat. When people first start losing weight there is a lot of water loss.

    Weight loss stall

It's so very much it is a biological impossibility for it to only be fat. 23lb of fat requires 2700 daily caloric deficit for a month. So, eating 700 calories per day you'd need to be burning 3400 calories. On average, running a marathon (26.2 miles) burns about 2800 Calories.

    Ulcer rate 15-20%???!!!

While having ermergerd sodium warnings on things (you know those kidneys you have? Yeah, guess what they do ... ), but not 'oh and it has 1,800 calories per portion' flashing red warnings.

  14. Just 80 calories per FOUR tablespoons vs Two tablespoons in the one sold in stores. I used Splenda instead. Six packets so far but It may need more it’s chilling. https://www.slenderkitchen.com/recipe/brownie-batter-chocolate-hummus

    Weight loss stall

Stall as definitely par for the course and the above mentioned three week stall is probably your culprit. If you are eating according to plan or as you say 7-800 calories there is no way you are not in calorie deficit so you will lose. Most people after stalls lose a few pounds real quick so it almost balances out. For now try to stay off the scale if it is messing with your head but just stick to your plan and the stall will lift.

    Weight loss stall

Hey! I'm about one month post op (gastric bypass feb 14). I've only lost about 23 lbs post op. I was at 309 when I went in for surgery. I think my weight was like 314 right after surgery because of all the fluids though. Anyway I'm getting annoyed because I've been in between 287 and 286 for the last 2 weeks. I am eating more calories now but not nearly enough to gain or even stall. I have about 700-800 calories a day right now. Is this normal to stall out so early? I try incorporating exercise in my daily routine but I'm still dealing with a lot of fatigue and lightheadedness from anemia so I feel terrible whenever I really exert myself. Any advice or tips? Thanks! Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    estimated weight loss

Chances are the weight loss will slow and she will level out naturally as she gets closer to a healthy weight but if not she can always work with the nutritionist to add in healthy calories to get to a balance that we call maintenance when she gets to a weight that her and her doctor feel is best. Some people shoot for a weight that is ten to 15 pounds lower than they want because of regain that happens to most of us.

    Any Regrets?

Your foolish and childish statement was referring to your overall point and anyone who discounts them is foolish and childish. Not to sound condescending but it does not take an English Major to see that this is consistent with the statement I made about YOUR condescension. You are referring to texts when you probably should say "posts" or "replies" or "quotes". I get it. The "text" you refer to was not me being condescending at all, it was a simple question to the OP whether they were counting their calories and meeting their nutritional goals so some perspective on their situation can be gained. That is something I see hundreds of times to a poster who asks a question or reaches out for help. I can go back and forth with this all day. You are obviously internalizing this particular issue for a real reason and maybe you can get some help for it on here or elsewhere. I would be happy to help talk you through it and maybe give you some advice. Good luck

    Where’s the weight loss??

You answered your own question. I seem to be posting this on every thread lately but ...you don't (I hope) want to lose weight, you want to lose fat (seems people are really scared of that word. It's fat loss surgery. Weight loss surgery is leg amputation.) If you ate 600 calories in a day, you lost fat that day, plain and simple. And you didn't lose 10lb of fat that first week. You didn't lose close to that. Your fat loss has almost certainly been constant or near constant each day so far. Others have explained why but the first week you probably lost 5lb or more of inflammation weight. Unpopular advice: stop weighing yourself. Eat protein, drink water. Walk gently and often. Smile.

    estimated weight loss

She will level out. Her body will know when to stop, she can also adjust her calories to maintain or even gain a few lbs if needed. If it becomes a real concern she can consult her nutritionist to help her get to and maintain a healthy weight.

    Clear protein drink

I like the gatorade zero with protein. (pre mixed bottles) 20 oz bottle is between 50-70 calories depending on flavor and 20 g protein. I wouldn't stock up too much for after surgery, a lot of people talk about their taste buds changing drastically after surgery. A lot of things you like before surgery you don't like after surgery and vise versa.

I've only tried one. It was Premier Protein clear protein drink in peach flavor. It was okay. Twenty grams of protein, 0 sugar, 90 calories.

    No weight loss

I know it sounds like expensive advice, but you could (should) try and find a registered dietician who can support you and help you through this. If your surgery was a while ago you should be able to exercise freely by now….walking is great as it’s low impact on the joints, it’s hard to over do it. Walking, drinking water (measure how much and try and get to at least 1.5 litres a day), eat only 3 times a day, log your food using an app, my dietician recommended baritastic, weigh your food (boring but worth it) read the labels and cut right down on the carbs (that is starches and sugars), go hard on the low carb proteins, don’t eat too much fatty food….try to aim for ??1000/ 12000 calories a day and the weight will drop off in no time.

    Food Before and After Photos

If you have one, Winn Dixie has rotisserie Turkey and chicken that they will slice for you at the deli. I never asked about sodium but I don’t think they add alot or junk to it because the calories are very low as best as I can recall.

    400 calories max

I went through a phase like that—couldn’t choke much of anything down to a point where I wasn’t even getting enough fluids. Talk to your dietitian/team. I ended up having to set a goal of increasing my intake by 100 calories a day each week. I was only eating about 200 a day and now I’m up to 800. Another possibility causing this is acid reflux—my stomach was so irritated that I was feeling full much faster than I should have which is why my “meals” were one or two bites.
