    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

I had mine on Feb 14th so I'm 5 weeks and 3 days out. I felt pretty good about fluids and protein until like 2 weeks ago drinking water and feeling pain/restriction, especially when it's room temp. Using a straw and having ice water seems to help me get it down better. I actually gulp in a lot of air when I don't use a straw. Most teams tell you not to, even mine but I feel gas pain in my chest without the straw. I'm doing really well with protein though and get 70-80 grams a day through about 700-800 calories. Rarely do I get to 800 cals though. I noticed on days when I have eaten up to 800 cals I feel nauseated at night so I try to not go over 750. It's a small difference but weird enough I can really feel it. I eat 3 small meals a day, one snack and a protein shake. My dietician has me eat 2 oz of protein every 2 hours during the daytime. I'm taking vitamins well, no hair loss...yet? I do need to take nausea medicine in the morning because maybe 4 times a week I wake up with the instinct to dry heave. I don't know why but I've always felt nauseous in the mornings, even pre op. I find that I can either focus on food or water but not both. When I drink 64 oz of fluids, I eat less and miss my protein goal. When I reach my protein goal, I drink less fluids. I find that balance to be really difficult to deal with and get right. I wonder when that'll be easier? It's also tough with the 2-hour eating rule and then the 10 min before 30 after drinking rule. I'd basically always have to have food or fluid in my mouth all day which isn't realistic for me. I've lost 29 lbs in 5 weeks. I don't really feel it yet/still feel like a big out-of-shape lump LOL. I think I'll feel the weight loss when I hit the 240's. I have my one-month post-op tomorrow with my nurse practitioner. Looking forward to it. P.S. Is anyone still dealing with constipation and ROCK HARD stool? I am on prune juice, Metamucil, colace and occasional senna tea. I go almost every day but it's incredibly forced, usually bleeding occurs or I need to slap on a pair of gloves and take it out (I know TMI I'm sorry ) . I'm going to talk to my team about it tomorrow but I'm so done with it. It also causes me a great deal of nausea. Wondering if anyone else is dealing with this and what you're doing to make it better?
  2. It makes me hyper. I burn so many more calories, get so many more steps, and have an incredibly clean home as a result of my activity while feeling the buzz. This allows for me to eat a little extra as a result and still see results. It's hard to not give into the cravings - push water and try to just keep yourself busy. I like sativa and hybrid blends - nothing that is going to make me want to sit there stoned and not moving. I find Wana brand gummies to be the best and there is a Butterfly Effect honey that is sensational, as well.

Same here. I gained 30 pounds back during COVID but recently re-lost them. I eat around 1000 calories a day and 75 g protein.

I’m 3.5 years out and I don’t really have carb nor protein goals anymore. I just try to stay at, or below my maintenance calories (yes, i count all calories ) So far, so good.
  5. Was out and about all day and managed to stop for a bit to eat one of these mushroom toasts for breakfast/lunch (pal ate the other one), and 2 yummer dark chocolate covered pretzels when I got home. 256 calories for what I ate. Not sure if I’m going to eat anything else today which is fine cuz yesterday it was food-a-rama: logged over 3000 cals yesterday (It was a total junk food day!)…so it’ll all even out, I guess 😇

just so you know, a 10- to 20 lb rebound from your lowest weight is VERY common in year 3. I think it's just your body settling in to a weight it feels comfortable at - your new "set point". Of course, you can still lose again if you cut enough calories - but it could be a bit of a struggle if you're fighting against where your body wants to be. I've been dealing with the same thing since year 3 (and here I am in year seven...). different things work for different people. I count calories, which my dietitian hates (she's into "intuitive eating"), but I'm obviously not cutting back enough or I'd be losing weight. It's tough... I know other vets who've done Weight Watchers, Keto, and/or intermittent fasting. Whatever works - some approaches are more effective than others, depending on the person. to respond to your questions (sort of, anyway...), I don't do low carb - but the vast majority of my carbs are the healthy kind (fruit, veggies, whole grains). I have to average around 100 grams of protein a day because I malabsorb it (we discovered this pretty soon after my surgery), and I do manage to get that in every day. Other than protein, it's really just calories for me. If I stay in the 1500-1700 range, I can maintain my weight - but I'd really love to lose 10-15 lbs (!!)

I’m a little over 3 years post op and due to bad choices have gained 18 pounds from my lowest weight. I need ideas of a typical day of eating from others who remain diligent to a low carb diet. How much protein and veggies are you in taking and do you count calories. TIA!
  9. This is true, but do consider the body will deploy a lot of strategies to minimize calorie expenditure if you get under the weight set point the body wants to be at. We know from the Harvard Health Biggest Loser study that the metabolism can lower expenditure by more than 800 calories a day - and even when gaining the lost weight back, the metabolism stays in this state (so this is why you gain more and more as crash diets stop and you regain).
  10. Surely if you are in a calorie deficit then you will continue to lose weight until you reach maintenance.
  11. I find it's pretty inconsistent, too. Though it will depend on what I'm eating - any dense foods sit heavy in my gut and I definitely can't eat much. Some days I can eat a cup of food no problems, and other days I start burping and feeling awful if I try to eat a "normal" sized meal. Honestly, 4 months out for me and I was still barely able to eat more than half a cup, so I think you're fine. I was eating between 600 and 800 at the 4 month mark, and really struggling to eat two "meals" a day. I was drinking two serves of protein water daily, so I only had to eat 10g of protein to get over the 60g minimum. It felt pathetic, but it was the best I could do and my Dietician was happy with me so I was unnecessarily hard on myself. Weirdly, once I crossed the 5 month mark I could suddenly eat around a cup. Now I'm getting an average of between 900 to 1000 calories a day. Some days I'm hungry, other days I feel like I did at the 4/5 month mark.
  12. So I am almost at the end of my 4th month and it seems I am getting full lot faster than before 🤷🏻‍♀️ Like the amount, I was able to eat, now I can't as much. Before I was okay eating around 0.75 cup (half of it is usually yogurt) but now I feel stuffed with the same level, so I have reduced the portion size a little to may be 0.5 to 0.6 cup or incorporate less solid and more semi solid like yogurt (which I usually have with every meal for my protein as a vegetarian eater). I don't know if anyone has experienced similar trajectory. Not sure if I should be concerned? Because I am studying, I am not as active. I do make sure to walk about 45 mins to an hour a day but that's mostly my activity other than some chores here and there. So I can't eat more than 3 to 4 meals a day and calories have kinda reduced too (between 600 to 800). I don't know, guess I am rambling but I am unable to eat as much to increase my calories. My dietician said usually patients on our program are around 1000 calories around 6 months mark, so I think I am alright but if I feel stuffed, I can't manage to eat much.

Anxiety about calories in pureed food

This sounds tough for you, sorry to hear. If it helps ease your pain, some programs believe you have to keep calories higher to avoid the metabolism getting used to living on nothing (see Harvard Health's Biggest Loser study for a derived logic).

Anxiety about calories in pureed food

im so glad to meet you. I have fear of calories from day one. i am 20 weeks post op and my fear keeps me under 600 cals this day. i told my dietician i cant make my numbers cause i am terrified of weight regain. Today i had one scrambled egg and two bites of mashed red beans and im done for the day. if im hungry i ignore it or drink water till it goes away. im crazy obsessing over failure. Plus i had family members tell me before surgery i would fail. And im gonna show them, not me, this is where my problem comes from. Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app

Anxiety about calories in pureed food

I just had my video appointment follow-up with my dietician. She said I should be aiming for 500-800 calories during puree phase - which lasts 4 weeks for me.

Anxiety about calories in pureed food

My doctor recommends 600-800 calories per day 60-80 grams of protein...But I didn't track/focus on calories until I was on solid "regular" foods. First 2 months was all about getting my protein, fluids, and vitamins down...as well as letting my body heal. Even now 6 months out I have good days and bad days. Learning to love ourselves and bodies is difficult ...you're doing great!!

First, congratulations on your weight loss & that you are feeling stronger & are able to be more active. How great is that! As @MiniGastricBypassDude said you don’t get to choose your body weight set point. Yes, you might be in or close to maintenance or in a prolonged stall. Yes, building muscles could contribute to the weight loss pause but also the more muscle you have the more calories you burn so you may need a calorie increase to compensate. Certain medications can also hamper weight loss. But logging your food & speaking with your dietician is always a good place to start. It can be easy to get a little complacent with portion sizes, etc., not meet protein goals or there maybe something missing in your diet. Sometimes a small tweak is all that is needed. The low blood pressure many experience after surgery is usually caused by an initial lack of nutrients from the restricted diet & dehydration. It’s why it’s usually a temporary experience. The same for the hypoglycaemic episodes you may have experienced. (Unfortunately I experienced them both before surgery & still do now almost three years post surgery. The low blood pressure is worse & occurs every day. Carrying my old weight actually used to help because it raised my BP to a normal 120/80 with just occasional drops. Didn’t expect that!) They get better as nutrition & portion sizes increase & fluid levels are maintained. You mentioned you have your annual check soon. How often do you see your surgeon or their team? How frequently do you have blood tests? I still see my surgeon’s colleague every three months & have a 3 monthly blood test so it always surprises me when people have follow ups much less frequently. All the best.

    No weight loss

There's no shame in having a surgery that didn't give you the hormonal change needed for your body to want to be at a lower weight. If your eating habits and thoughts around eating are the problem, the solution is fixing your head. After all, we're highly complex individuals doing highly complex tasks day in, day out. Of course we could eat 'right' if all it took was knowing what to eat. How many people end up on a bariatric forum who haven't done a plethora of diets, restrictions, and calories counting? Really? I don't believe in any rigid diet structures, because I've yet to see them work in happy people leading full lives. I do believe in flexible control and in adopting a toolbox of behavioral strategies. Wonderful that it works for a few people for a while, more power to you. But if it stops working, what then?

Everyone is different and it sounds like you have come a VERY long way- so congratulations!! Seriously, 177 is great! I only chime in because I am the same age & height. I’m not sure what you do for diet but, I keep track of my calories, protein, carbs & fat. I stay under 1200 cal/day (was closer to 800-1000/day first 6mo) & min 70g protein per day. TBH there are days where I feel like I didn’t eat a lot but my calories are high because of seemingly healthy choices that were higher cal and I need to adjust how/if/when I eat certain foods. If I didn’t track I would have no idea this was happening. I’m now WNL but that last ONE POUND took 6 weeks to lose. Lol. Notably, I don’t exercise a lot but am trying to increase.
  20. Obviously im bored and am spending my time posting multiple pics of food today. I did end up eating almost all my earlier salad throughout the afternoon (estimating i ate about 3/4)…would have eaten it all if not for Mr. eating out if my bowl at the same time. So now im snacky and got out some pita crisps, one of the sweedish meatballs i made for dinner and s tbsp of chicken liver pate: 210 calories. i know, doesn’t look appetizing, but i also know i’ll eat it all! (i also has an espresso martini just now, so +141 calories to that)

    Vegetarian meat substitutes

Here's another vegetarian post op meal: 1.5 oz of cauliflower mac n cheese, 1.5 oz of beyond beef, 1 teaspoon sugar free ketchup and chipotle hot sauce on the Mac n cheese (I like spicy food). Total 3 oz of food about, 150 calories and 12 grams of protein, 2.5 grams of carbs. I know it looks super ugly lol but it tastes great! I actually had the burger patty leftover from a restaurant. I had to go to a work dinner and I didn't want to deal with telling people why I wasn't eating so I ordered a beyond burger and ate a quarter of it (just the patty) and told everyone I was Low carb LOL anyway, the patty lasted me 3 days worth of meals so I stretched my dollar far too! all I can say is that the last 20 lbs were a bear for me to lose. We're talking like two lbs a month, despite the fact I was really working at it. And after being down there for a few months, those 20 lbs came back on - and here I sit. I do know that it's very common to have a 10-20 lb rebound after one hits their lowest weight - but in my case, I also wonder if maybe where I am now is where my body really wants to be (my set point). That's not to say I couldn't lose it again, but that would involve dropping back on my calories, and having to fight to get down there again - and then continue to struggle to keep it there. of course, you could also just be in a long stall, too. Mine tended to last longer the closer I got to a normal BMI. Or...yes - it could be that you're building muscle. long story short - it's hard to tell. It really could be any of these things. That's a good idea to run it by your team next time you see them. In the mean time, just keep up with the good eating and exercise habits....sounds like you've done really well so far!
  23. Had fun prepping this salad, but despite feeling hungry at first, ended up putting it back in the fridge cuz i realized afterwards i wasn’t really in the mood. I’ll attack it later when i get hungry again…which will likely not be too far from now. 305 calories for the bowl, regardless.

As we get closer to a normal BMI weight loss does slow down. For me it slower about 20, but Now I am 9 pounds from “normal” and I am stuck!! I don’t do a lot of exercise either other than walking. It is possible it’s just a long stall but if it doesn’t break soon you will have to explore the possibility that you have put yourself into maintenance. At that point you will have to log and see exactly how many calories you are currently eating and consider cutting them by a bit to start the loss again. You say you eat three small meals and don’t snack much but you would be surprised how much the calories can vary based on that. Maybe before cutting calories speak to your dietician because of the low BP and blood sugar (I am not experienced with those).

    weight plateau and energy loss

Hallo, luek je te ontmoeten. Yes as the others said its a stall. Very frustrating. I felt very weak for the first 2 to 3 months. I put it down to my age and extreme nausea. Once I got my calories in the 800- 1000 a day range and sorted my vitamins, things improved hugely. I can now clean the house without problems and have started walking. It will get better. Good luck
