Help! I ate McDonald's 2 weeks post op
Addicted replied to MoominMan's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
My. first slip was pizza the first week post op. Adding spicy condiments followed. I was arrogant thinking that I could handle it. I may have thought I was getting away with it but I started to have really bad reflux and had stopped my reflux med. I also had that terrible feeling you experienced from overeating. When I had my follow up appointment, I was told that it was possible that I had damage with the spicy foods and not sticking to my full liquid diet. I have digestive issues anyway so ignoring the "rules" made no sense. My brain now talks to me when I think I can have something that does not comply with my soft foods diet. I analyze everything and find that so much it would seem like I can eat is a "no". It's like, "you can have fruits but it can't have skin or seeds", "you can have vegetables but they have to be cooked, soft and watch out of gas producing vegetables. You can have beans though." go figure. I no longer scoff at the rules though because I only have another week or two before I go on regular foods. I made it this far, why blow it. I would think that we all have pushed the limits at some point and lived to regret it. Don't be discouraged by the mistakes you make. You are awesome! -
You will be fine! I’m not trying to worry you because with Covid everyone is backed up. But there is huge difference so thought I’d share my experience. I know how you are feeling! I cancelled Surgery in Nov after doing 2 week fluids bc of blogs with horrific complications scared me to death. plus I never heard of loose skin that bad like the extreme ones on U-tube. Also petrified of Anesthesia bc bad issue before. Cancelled surgery in Jan because Dad died. I have met with my surgeon 4 times and he is the nicest caring surgeon. He doesn’t rush me & answers questions truthfully. He also does reflux surgery & has vitamins on amazon plus U-tube videos. He has plastic surgeon he works with & went over info to help insurance cover skin removal as it’s unhygienic & rashes hurt. But said exercise helps so much. His Nurse is awesome and when I call her for questions, she never tries to hurry me. The hospital pre op & Covid test ran smooth. It only took a month to be okayed so I pay nothing. The office is efficient. Surgery is Sep 8th. Three times a charm, I wish I had done it in November. I did the liquid diet twice now & gained it back. If you have a bad feeling make sure surgeon is a registered Bariatric Surgeon. Our health & lives are at risk. I have 4 bad issues will go away. So please think about that if you get scared at the last minute. We can all do this. Like you, I am pretty much alone except my husband. I’m really thankful for everyone here. If anyone is in the Houston/The Woodlands area, He has a 5 star rating several places so I’ll share info. Prayers for everyone having soon & recovering!

Recent RNY - How ya doing?
BigSue replied to Corrine2020's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had gastric bypass on July 16 (6 weeks yesterday). I've lost 20 pounds since surgery (the rest was before surgery), and I'm disappointed because I'm not losing weight any faster than I was before surgery when I was eating 3-4 times as much. It is easier now because I haven't been hungry since surgery. I am now under 250 pounds, which is my lowest weight since college, and the weight that I have been lying to say I am for years. Now I will have to pick a new lie! I used to have high blood pressure, and now I'm solidly in the normal range (not even pre-hypertension) with no medications. My A1c went from 8.1 in February to 5.2 last week, also with no medications. I am discouraged, though, because I have lost more than 90 pounds from my highest weight, but I'm still wearing the same clothes. They're a bit too loose, but not quite to the point of my pants falling down. I can wear a few things now that were too small at my highest weight, but I've only gone down one size, MAYBE two. I didn't get around to taking "before" pictures until I had already lost 40 pounds, but I recently took 1-month post-surgery pictures and I honestly cannot tell a difference between my pictures at 250 pounds and at 300. Even though my butt doesn't look any smaller, I have lost enough padding that sitting is a pain in the @$$ (which I was expecting eventually, but I thought I'd have to lose a lot more weight before I experienced that). What gives? How could I have lost more than 25% of my body weight without getting much smaller? Am I losing muscle but not fat? I will say I can tell a difference in my face (my phone doesn't even recognize my face half the time now), but that's not much consolation. I don't think any full-body pictures exist from my highest weight since I intentionally avoided cameras, but I got my passport picture taken at my highest weight and then procrastinated so much on sending in the application that I decided to get the picture retaken. -
People *really* like to stick their noses in people's business where it doesn't belong. I brought it up thinking my friends and family would be happy to hear about me taking a positive change toward healthy, but I was met with a lot of negative comments. I ended up not telling anyone else until afterward, once I started losing the weight. It is *not* a quick fix, no matter what people tell you. It's a tool to help you get your life on track in a healthy way. There will be a honeymoon period where the weight falls off with you doing nothing, but once that stops, it's all on you. It's not the "easy way out." I had a lot of health problems before this. I've lost almost 100 pounds in 8 months and, despite a little saggy skin, my health is the best it's ever been in my entire life. I have normal blood pressure, I'm not longer at risk of a heart attack, I am not at risk for diabetes, I have more energy than ever before and actually want to get out and do things... People are going to be supportive and people are going to be total jerks about it. You just gotta make sure you listen to what *you* want to do. It's your body and it's your health. ❤️

Pre Op Vitamins and Suplaments
Arabesque replied to sarahredwood's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ask your surgeon to recommend what supplements are best for your needs & your surgery. There are some that are formulated especially for Bariatric patients. (I believe there are some on this site.) Some people struggle to swallow vitamins post surgery so this might be a consideration in what sort you chose - capsules, gummies, patches... Nothing will prevent the saggy skin or hair loss. Sorry. The saggy skin is what’s left after the fat is gone from your stretched out skin. If you’re younger, your natural skin elasticity may help to reduce some of the sag. But the older you are, the more weight you have to lose, how much your weight has fluctuated over the years all increase your chance of saggy skin. Some say exercise & weights but that only builds muscle to fill in under the skin. It doesn’t tighten the skin itself. (I’d have to have Chris Hemsworth’s arms to fill up my batwings.) The only way to get rid of saggy skin is to physically remove it. I was almost 54 when I had my surgery & expected I’d have saggy skin after. I actually didn’t have much once I hit my goal - my upper arms, a little looseness between my upper thighs & general softness on my tummy. Then I lost the additional 10kg & everything went south. Saggy butt, flappy arms, oozing down my thighs... I even have loose skin on my fingers! I’ve just accepted my sags as part of my journey to get where I am now. The hair loss occurs because of the shock of the surgery & restricted diet accelerates your natural hair loss cycle. Supplements will only support new hair growth. They won’t stop your existing hair from shedding. Best of luck on your journey. It’s going to be amazing. -
Hello I am about 2 months out and starting to think about vitamins I should be taking. Is there anything g specific I should be taking for pre op? Anything g to prevent hair loss or saggy skin? Thanks Sarah

Food Before and After Photos
Pandemonium replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Well, I decided to do it. It was time. I made the ricotta bake. I wanted more protein, so I browned up a pound of ground turkey with some onion powder, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning and mixed that in with the other ingredients. Quadrupled the recipe so I could feed my boyfriend, have leftoverS for hi. And plenty of leftovers for me to freeze for later. Served myself 3.8 ounces. and of course, that was more than I could fit/needed. Boyfriend said it tasted just like lasagna without the noodles. I had meant to add crushed red pepper, but forgot. Would definitely make it again, but probably skip the mozzarella. Part-skin mozzarella always ends up like cardboard and was so hard to chew well enough. -
I've lost 45kg total since my sleeve in October 2019 and I feel amazing! Still have days when I feel big, but then I take pictures like this and think holy cow! I've been doing bodypump classes and I'm even seeing some baby muscles in my arms and legs, and it's really helped with my loose skin. Now to work on maintaining, which has always been the hard part of weight loss for me.

Yep, it's likely related to your VSG. Your hormones go crazy afterwards. You can also expect weird periods (timing, duration, flow etc). I think the hormones do calm down. I'm three years out and my skin is back to normal. I find that taking my bariatric vitamins helps my skin, as well as drinking a lot of water. Right after my WLS, it was like being a teenager again. I promise it won't last forever!

So good to hear. Wonderful. That's amazing. I'm so incredibly nervous and about to jump out of my skin. I have waited for years for this. As most of us have, I'm sure. Glad your surgery went well and that you aren't starving

Obsessing about Plastic Surgery!!
pssk replied to ChubRub's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
@2Bsmaller18 I’ve never had much shape, I think the Faja gives some illusion of a waist. Probably a nice side effect of the belt lipectomy that I didn’t even think about was creating some waist definition. My having plastics was more for reasons beyond aesthetics. The physical effects of the excess skin and laxity, Including of the abdominal muscles. Although honestly I weirdly don’t have the normal curvature you have in your back that gives your butt definition because my spine is twisted (rotatory scoliosis) it’s just flat as a board. My stomach, butt and thighs were the biggest, I guess I never swelled as much in my calves except post op. My calves and fat piggy feet were huge when I came home. But I think that maybe taking turmeric gummies helped quite a bit. Using the Faja is what helps waist train and give definition especially post op so I plan to use it for a while. And then switch to just waist trainer. Not just to maintain the results of the surgery but to try to help with my severe back pain from degenerate disc disease, arthritis, and the scoliosis. I’m very critical of myself and have a hard time when people comment what I look like. I don’t tend to see it. Or sometimes don’t interpret what they say as good. Ie. When someone says things like if you lose any more weight you will disappear. and I’ve just been rambling .... I’m very sorry that you have so many health challenges. I hope you are feeling better since your surgeries and in the future. -
@catwoman7 thank you for your insight. I really love your honesty, especially considering you have had surgery and have the condition also. You gave me so much hope. I know everyone is different, however, I a, praying I am one of those people that looses much slower than others. Thank you

Yes I know all the underlining info. I know that I wont be able to control the first month of weight loss during the first few months or weeks I should say. As far as loosing too much too fast , I meant like loosing 80 lbs in less than 6 months. I know several people who have had that happen. Thanks for your reply.
-
Not sure how you define “too much too fast”, but in the first month or so you will likely drop weight without even trying: your stomach will physically prevent from eating alot (at least in volume). That’s not to say that you have ZERO control of this as you still have a choice of the TYPES of food you eat, i.e., low vs high calorie. I mean you could choose a clear bone broth or you could reach for a creamy higher fat soup. Though I personally wouldn’t recommend purposefully slowing weight down by increasing calories so early on...but if that is what you really want, you talk to your team and they can advise you. As for drinking lots if water, I think most find that this ability returns within the first month of surgery (barring any complications, of course). I was back to drinking a ton of water by the end of week 2...BUT I couldn’t (and still can’t) drink while I’m eating nor for about 30-40 minutes after eating. Good Luck! Edited to add: as for toning your body, nothing will prevent you from doing this (unless you have physical limitations). Now whether or not you can SEE the toning is another story. If you have alot of weight to lose, the excess skin may cover all your gorgeous muscles up. Unfortunately the only way to get rid of a lot of excess skin is with plastic surgery. I didn’t have too too much excess skin on my stomach (looked like wrinkled fabric), but after my tummy tuck, my abs became clear as day.

Obsessing about Plastic Surgery!!
Darktowerdream replied to ChubRub's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
If I did then I didn’t have enough left to notice that I did. I had a hysterectomy in 2010. Then maybe a month before my gastric bypass surgery in April 2019 (somewhere thereabouts) I had a oophorectomy along with other pelvic surgeries to try to fix some post hysterectomy problems. They took one ovary covered in endometriosis. Later on some months after my gastric bypass I had to have another oophorectomy and to redo a surgical repair as well. So that put me into menopause. It’s hard to say since maybe menopause impacts me differently with having adult onset congenital adrenal hyperplasia and pcos ... @2Bsmaller18 I’ve never had much shape, I think the Faja gives some illusion of a waist. Probably a nice side effect of the belt lipectomy that I didn’t even think about was creating some waist definition. My having plastics was more for reasons beyond aesthetics. Hello everyone. I was recently diagnosed with hypothyriodism in 8/2019. After realizing this, I started the process to get approved for VSG and was approved for a 8/2020 surgery date. I then pushed my surgery date back to 12/2020 because I am so afraid of the unknown. I am 5 ft 9 inches tall and I weigh 269 lbs currently. I have always been super athletic and my calves and thighs are huge and are very muscular. I have a three year old daughter and lost 22 lbs during my pregnancy just so that I could deliver with my OB vs being considered high risk and having to transfer to the hospital where I worked in high risk OB. My highest weight has been 275 lbs. Please someone with hypothyriodism please share some insight with me. Here are my biggest fears. Loosing too much weight too fast. Not being able to tone my body and my biggest is not being able to ever drink 2-3 gallons of water day every again. I currently take Synthoriod 75 mg and I have found a new endo Dr. Please someone share some info with me.

Hi All, Do any of you have a good plastic surgeon in the San Jose/San Francisco bay area that has experience with weight loss patients? I'm still in the weight loss phase (down 130 of a target 163) and am already seeing that I will want my arms done. I also have breast implants from years ago that I want removed and likely just a lift with no replacement implants. I may also want to consider tummy and legs, but maybe not -we'll see where I end up. I would prefer someone who specializes in weight loss since the amount of skin and damage can be so different. If not in the bay area, anyone have someone good that does travel patients with good setups to stay there for some time after surgery (I would want to stay in the US).

Myotomy and sleeve to bypass revision due to GERD
Foxbins replied to Foxbins's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
135.8 this morning. My strategy to keep weight on by using full-fat dairy products won't work. Fat is what is giving me loose and frequent bowel movements, so I've changed my strategy and have upped the carbs, going with more fruit and veg and more whole grains like barley. I'm eating five or six times a day. I'm trying to understand the "full" feeling with this surgery because I won't always be able to measure my food. It's so different from the sleeve. The sleeve had a definite feeling of pressure inside, this is more subtle. It's a little more apparent if I eat protein by itself, but I can't just eat protein. -
Day 13-14 moving on to Purée diet. Encountered some difficulties with purée. I mixed up some canned crab with light mayo and yogurt and I apparently did not soften it enough. It got stuck in my esophagus and I got a bad series of spasms in the area between the breast and at the top of the stomach. I’m still feeling tender hours later but my vital signs are normal. I don’t think I did any permanent damage but I plan to step back to full liquids or maybe even clear Liquids tomorrow. So that is a very important lesson learned. Purée must be very wet and loose at first. I’m also eating too fast. I got overconfident with the way full liquids went down. Other than that I’m walking twice a day for about twenty minutes each session. I feel a little depressed today but hopefully tomorrow will be better.

If my skin was jaundiced I wouldn't be attempted to do (or attempting) anything at home, I'd be going to the doctor ASAP.
-
Is there anything you can do from home if your skin is a little jaundiced to correct it?
