Are you really thirsty?? Try to curb hunger pains with water if you've eaten recently. As a matter of fact, if you drink 20 ounces of plain water you could be full in minutes and you haven't eaten a single calorie. Hope it helps!

So I know that we need 60-70 grams of protein everyday but can anyone tell me how much calories, fat etc. a day or does it matter or not. I'm just confused. I asked my NUT & she basically said don't worry about it because I'm very diligent about getting my water & proper protein (never more than about 3oz at a time) everyday. I'm 1 month out so I don't have room or time to get anything other than water & protein in. I tried to tell her that I think that info would help me choose the correct items long term to eat but i was kinda blown off. I'm a hairdresser who travels so I have no free time for much prep. & really no time to be eating all day. So what I need it small items I can eat in a reasonable amount of time that packs a bit of a protein punch. I can find these items but I'm wondering how many calories & fat is too much for something with say 20 grams of protein. Any guidance would be amazing! ;D x

I think I'm scared
2goldengirl replied to Chaelove0810's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I first started semisolids, it was a bit hard to enjoy things because I had to struggle to get my calories in. More recently though, I've really been enjoying how satisfying a teeny amount of something can be. I found some soy-ginger fish filets about a week ago that are really tasty, and I was totally happy having just two ounces of fish. Tonight I made spaghetti & meatballs (thank you, TJ's, for the meatballs) for Huz, and I had two meatballs with tomato sauce, again about two ounces. I had one to see how it would sit, then had another. Such small amounts, so satisfying, and I met my Protein and calorie goals for the day, too! -
drinking too much post-op
patsal replied to Awkward customer's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
OP I wish I could get that much down and 5 pounds is great for aloss. I have only lost one pound since being banded on Friday. I'm six days post op and it took me from 8:30 to noon to get a whole shake down. It took and hour for me to get a cup of broth down this afternoon. I must be doing something wrong because I get all tight and feel like I am going to retch if I have any more. I am having a hard time getting all my liquids in let alone my calories. Yesterday I got 490calories in and 36 ounces of liquid, but I am having a heck of a time with discomfort after I eat or drink. Maybe I am still swollen? -
drinking too much post-op
ElfiePoo replied to Awkward customer's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If all you're having is 3 shakes a day, then you'll find your weight loss will be slower than if you had 5 shakes per day...because you've dropped your calories below 1000 per day. Research has proven that women who eat 1200 calories per day lose faster than those eating 1000 or less. Has to do with the starvation factor and our bodies lowering our metabolism to become more energy efficient. They say our bands aren't designed for shakes (and they're right), but I usually have nothing but shakes for breakfast, mid-morning, lunch and mid-afternoon meals. Then I eat a regular dinner and another protein shake in mid-evening. All told I'm eating about 1200 calories per day. . -
Am I doing this right? Preop low carb diet
ouroborous replied to SouthernSleever's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You will lose a LOT of weight on the preop diet, but it's all Water weight. The point of the preop diet isn't really to reduce fatty liver, but to dehydrate your liver slightly, making it easier (and safer) to manipulate during the surgery. Metabolizing carbs requires a lot of water (I can't remember the old Krebs Cycle breakdown, but I think it's something like five waters per sugar or something like that), so naturally a shift towards carb metabolism makes you retain water, and a shift away is diuretic (it's a homeostatic mechanism). The bottom line is that low carb "diets" don't really do much aside from help you lose water weight (plus refined white flour is very calorie dense, so it's good to avoid in the long run), but in the case of the pre-sleeve diet, water weight loss is exactly what's needed. If you are following your surgeon/nutritionist's recommendations to the letter, you should be fine. If you have any questions, I'd give them a call, but just from reading your daily meals it sounds about right. -
Holla people of the banding! It is Day 4 post-op for me. In my previous entries, I used hours-no more, I shall use days from now on because 1. Adding 24 to everything gets on my nerves 2. I'm just not that good at math Today was a fabulous day for me, I took it easy yesterday after overdoing it on Day 2, so Day 3 I mainly rested, read, watched TV and thought how long is my stomach going to look so bloated? Isn't that an odd thing to ponder? I'm fat, but I don't want to look unnecessarily bloated! Pretty ridiculous, anyway that's how I felt. I have only taken 2 pain pills today, which is good because I was starting to fondly imagine them being M&M's. I continue to fall in love with my Crystal Light Lemonade and drink about 20-30 oz of protein today. I have yet to feel a hunger pain, or think about food in an unhealthy way, does no good so I will not waste my brain cells on disgusting greasy food that I no longer like, and Lord knows it doesn't like anybody! Today I woke up feeling 99% better. My pain is minimal and seems to be concentrated to lower left and lower right side of my abdomen. There are no sutures or bandages there, that's just where it hurts for me, again, this may be from the hernia repair I just don't know. The important part is that it is getting better and better every day. I went shopping at Old Navy today, we have an outlet close to my city. I purchased 4 or 5 pair of terry cloth shorts that have a drawstring and they are the shiznet, especially in this heat. I looked upon some bathing suits and told them I would definitely be seeing them next year, maybe every style! I came home and walked 1 mile and took a shower, I feel great! I still havent tried to put solid food in my mouth, I'm uncertain if my Dr put any restriction or not when he placed it, but the way I feel now, I don't need it yet. I want to thank everyone on this site, you guys are truly the only one's who understand, I thank you and am grateful for you everyday. Tomorrow is Day 5 and I'm excited about each and everyday that I'm alive. I'm also thankful I chose the band and not the bypass, it was the better decision for me. So here I am on Saturday night feeling anxious and happy about my future. I wonder when I can enjoy a glass of wine? I know they're empty calories but I still want a glass. I'm sure beer is out of the question, I don't like beer anyway. I will have Crystal Light Strawberry Kiwi and pretend, I'll put it in a wine glass! Lo & Behold!!!

Although I hate everything that crossed my path in the last month, except for small children, I have not gained a pound! My weigh in on 9-29 and today are the same! What the hell? I swear I ate for all my future hunger and have nothing to show for it, except a REALLY BIG grocery bill. Started liquids today and can't believe you can live on less than 500 calories a day. That was today. Tomorrow you may find me on here pulling my hair out. Come on November 16th. I want some cream soup!!!

WOW 24 lbs in 6 weeks that is amazing, that's an average of 4 lbs a week. Your body is changing and adjusting so it's probably taking a rest from losing, it's part of the process. Here's the deal the first 6-8 weeks are about healing and adjusting to our new way of eating. Weight loss in this time period is a bonus, so consider yourself ahead of the game. You are eating well and working out well so you know that is not the problem. We all hit a plateau from time to time and believe me your body is making adjustments right now. If you think you are eating more than you should (I don't think you are based on what you said) it could be time for a fill. I know it's easier said than done but don't stress if you haven't lost any weight, you didn't gain this weight overnight so it's not going to come off overnight. Keep in mind sometimes we have to shock our system to get things moving again. Try to change up your eating a little; maybe add some calories or take away some calories. Also change up your workouts a bit, add some more cardio (cardio is what burns calories). Be kind to yourself during this time and keep in mind it's a process. You are doing "AWESOME" focus on that; not the scale for now.

So when are you going to get off yogurt?
Melinco posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This was the question asked of me today when I went in for my fill. For Breakfast most mornings (especially work days), I eat light string cheese and CARBMaster yogurt (12 g Protein, 4 g carb, 1.5 g fat and only 80 calories). She said that yogurt just slides right through the band and doesn't provide the feeling of satiety. I have to disagree. Again, during work days, I eat breakfast about 8:45 am. I then take lunch at noon. It fits my schedule perfectly and I am ready to eat lunch at that time. I don't eat dinner then until around 6:30-7:00 pm. My doctor also told me to stay away from any Soups that I can't eat with a fork. Hmm, so I guess no more SouperSalad for me! lol On a side note, I did get a fill and some how managed to lose a pound in the last two weeks. I had had a cold which made my band really tight so I didn't get a fill two weeks ago. My cold went away and so did my restriction. I've been eating a ton this last week and totally expected to gain. -
What pre op diets have your surgeons pit you on?
RickM replied to CarmenVSG2017's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just the semi-usual day before GI surgery clear liquids and a clean out in the evening (in case they have to go into the intestines for anything.) Other than than there was the insurance mandated six month speed bump to WLS that was just a non-specific physician supervised calorie controlled diet exercise program. -
If you don't like "shakes" try the syntrax nectar. I bought the variety pack to try them all. Flavors like lemonade, iced tea, fuzzy navel. They aren't creamy, more like a regular beverage. I mix them with ice and water, they are 100 calories, sugar free and 23g protein. I'm pre op and just giving them a try to see what I like, and so far, so good. [emoji1303]

Hi - and welcome! I am retired, so... but I didn't slow down my routine or any projects I had. If I remember correcly the 2nd and 3rd day of the pre-op was the worst for me - I was on liquids only - but by the 4th day I was doing fine. I drank Premier Protein shakes. They are low carb, 30 grams of protein per 11 ounces - 160 calories, I think. They actually taste pretty good. They come in chocolate, vanilla and strawberry cream. You can find them at costco or Sams at pretty good prices. I had a problem with them after surgery for awhile - my body didn't like whey protein - but now that I am a few more weeks out I can drink them once in a while with no problems. There are many other Protein Shakes and supplements out there - one I used after surgery was unflavored unjury Protein powder. It is easy to put in stuff like Soup - you don't really taste it and it is about 21 grams of protein per scoop. I am sure other folks will have more suggestions. Some folks get samples of different varieties to try and choose that way... Good luck with the pre-op diet and your surgery!

How many calories were you eating during pre-op diet?

Pre Surgery Nerves and No Special Diet - Need Advice
Berry78 replied to Stone52's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I should add, the clear liquids can and should have calories. Lots of broth and some regular jello would be good. Too much sugar will make you sick, especially if you are diabetic. Broth... get a whole chicken and simmer it for several hours in a large pot (include the giblets, carrots, celery, onions and the like) I add a tablespoon of italian herbs and salt and pepper to taste. Start with half a teaspoon of salt, a little goes a long way. Drain and put broth in the fridge overnight. In the morning, scrape off the fat, and you have jello-like broth. Freeze the extra.. but you can drink as much as you want. Meanwhile the chicken meat can be removed from the bones and turned into chicken salad or what have you... -
Lol. I've never been asked that!! I just follow what my doctor said. I have a hard time eating but push to have 800 calories a day which hardly happens. I drink a Protein shake almost every morning. I eat Proteins and veggies and portion out all my food two days at a time. Everything eat gets counted and input into the Lose It app and I wear a fit bit. I try to hit at least 10,000 steps a day but usually go for more. I don't eat carbs such as rice, bread, or Pasta and avoid sliders like the plague. I finally stated working out and am using Couch to 5K app. It's hard but I'm trying. I listen to inspirational music and talks and write down positive letters to myself. Finally I am seeing a counselor and have asked friends and family to be there for me. Being vulnerable isn't bad- it's human!!! I still have a long long way to go. Just felt inspired to share since I'm at the same weight I was when I was 16 and I'm 31 now!!! BTW - I ask for tips and any ones advice and sift them for me :-)

Just feeling awful & miserable! Almost 1 month post-op
Madam Reverie replied to segatz80's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Up your Water. Up your Protein. Get more calories in for the short while. I felt crappy at 4 week.. But by weeks 6, 7, 8 and got on real food? I was flying. Try roasted meats in gravy with mashed vegetables. It'll make you feel like a human and one pot of it will last you, like, forever whilst at work! Stay away from citrus, sugar, fats and high-spice. It won't sit well. Keep it bland and get the food in. Promise, it'll make the biggest change to your mental state. -

Making changes 2 months before surgery
Bufflehead replied to VivVsg's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
IMO a liquid diet is not helpful pre-op as you won't find them filling, liquids will just leave you hungry and more apt to fall off plan. The approach that I adopted for several months worked well for me, as it kept me satisfied, helped me learn some new habits that would be helpful in my post-op life, and helped me lose weight. My plan:-- --I opened a myfitnesspal.com account and started tracking everything I ate, including weighing/measuring my portions --Stopped all liquid calories --1500 calories per day max --No sweets or tropical fruits --limit one serving of WHOLE grains or starchy veggies (potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, lima Beans, peas) per day --No drinking with meals or for 30 minutes after. --No "eating back" exercise calories. Good luck to you! -
Surgery set for end of January, 2017
Laura62 replied to Laura62's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery date was to be for the end of January. Didn't happen. I was informed that it will be the end of February, beginning of March. Grrrrrrr! Happy it's still going to happen.....but, geesh. I'm pretty sure frustration, nerves and excitement burn massive calories. So, win win for me. :-D -
I'm getting sleeves on the 23 after starting this journey March 2015. Have started pre-op diet and it's not all that bad. 1200 calorie non liquid diet. Hope everyone is doing well Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
