Sleeve 5 years ago; now revision to bypass??
ellie123 replied to KristinaW's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
You and I talked at length so hopefully my advice helped. Sleeve to RNY revision. That first doc did my revision and had been doing bypasses for 20 years, so is well respected in the industry. Now bedside manner is another thing... I’m 5 weeks out, and aside from sorting insurance out, no regrets :)) -
Revision

There are therapists that specialize in bariatric therapy. They help the patient manage expectations, emotions, dealing with head hunger, etc... It's actually a really good idea. Many of us on here have used them at one time or another. I have to have a revision and while I'm concerned about the rate of loss, I'll be honest, I mostly just want to feel better. I had my sleeve in May 2022 and I've lost 108 pounds. I still have 80 pounds to go to get to goal. I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing with my diet and working out, and it may take longer than it did now, but I know I'll get there. You will, too. Just keep in mind that stalls happen a lot, 25 pounds lost in 6 weeks in excellent, and just stick religiously to your surgeon's plan and you'll get there in the end. The main goal is better health, anyway. -
Well, I can speak from both sides as I was a band to sleeve revision. I had the revision because the band didn't work. I never found the proper fill and it was either too tight (food sticking all the time causing vomiting) or it was too loose (allowing me no restriction). Additionally healthy food such as chicken and vegetables with Fiber and fruits with skin got stuck on the band. I found myself eating processed food all the time just so I could eat. It SUCKED!!! I had the band for 3 years and lost 30lbs. I've had the sleeve for 6 months (tomorrow) and I've lost 80lbs. There is NO COMPARISON as far as I'm concerned. I'm loving my sleeve and wish I had done this procedure in 2009. Sent from my iPhone using VST

More deep thought about revision

I had my band for 5yrs, sick & miserable for 5yrs lol. Slips, dilations, you name it. I was revised dec 10th 2012, they removed my band and sleeved me all at once. My band made it easy to remove, since all the sutures had broken and the damn thing decided to wrap around my esophagus. I had esophageal spasms for 2 weeks because of it but I'm doing good now & feel so much better -
I'm only 4'11 and my HW was 233, I received the lap-band in 12/03/03. I received my revision on 5/28/13. SW: 180.4 CW: 161.7

More deep thought about revision
MelissaGG posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thanks everyone for your support and help. I am just starting to figure out what to do. I have had my band almost 10 years and it is time to come out. I am scared of what damage they will find when they get there and I am trying to select a new Doctor. I looked locally at what my insurance company recommends as Centers of Excellence and I also see that there are some top hospitals outside of my region, such as The Cleveland Clinic. I am wondering if it will be worth it for peace of mind, to see if I can go to one of these more experienced hospitals for a revision? It would be a 1 hour plane ride and around $200 from Chicago or a $150 train ride for 5 hours each way. I would not want to drive it, that would be about 6 hours. Am I being unreasonable or am I just reading too deeply into horror stories and assuming that I will have problems? Any recommendations for an excellent surgeon in the Chicago area...when I say excellent, I mean world renowned. I care less about personality than I do skills. -

Sleeve to Bypass revisioners?

Beginning the Process of getting a revision and scared of being a failure again!
Dream4tc replied to stleochic's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my band for 4 years. Lost 80 pounds, but it slipped and had to have it removed Aug 10th. I wanted to have my revision in one surgery, but my insurance company didn't want to pay for that, so instead they are paying for 2 surgeries, oh well its their dime. It would have been nice to have it done all at once for less time off, less recovery time, less risk...etc l. The pain of the removal was pretty intense at the port site, and the most pain I had was the scar tissue that he removed that the band had made. My surgeon made me wait for 3 months and I am scheduled for my revision Nov 30th. I am hoping the pain won't be as severe as the removal was. When banded it was difficult to eat healthier foods. I was unable to eat citrus, hard veggies, salad would get stuck often, shrimp, and no breads, chips, or pastas. Meat would also get stuck. I know what you dealt with. I think everybody has the fear of failure, more so with revision. It is normal, but don't let the fear consume you or prevent you from being successful with this new chance. Follow the rules, measure and weigh your food and you will do great!! -

I am scared too. My revision is next week. I would guess most of us who are doing a revision are scared of failure. How could we not be? But it is also exciting because it does have a higher success rate and gives us a better tool with which to lose weight. -
Hello fellow WLS people I am new to this, I have had a lap band for 7 years with minimal wt. loss and a few problems along the way. 2 hernia surgeries 1 regular, 1 fondoplication. Recently went to the ER due to waking from a deep sleep choking on my own saliva/reflux?.. went from once in a while to more than a few times at night. A trip to my gastroenterologist to find my band had slipped and needed to be removed. I am a candidate for Revision Surgery and have researched Vertical Gastric Sleeve surgery.... But I have some serious concerns about the choking issue with the band. Was I only choking because the band had slipped or can this problem happen again with the new surgery. It was very scary not to mention I would think dangerous (aspiration pneumonia) anyone else with this issue with band slip and what was the result after Gastric Sleeve Surgery. I should add since I have had all the Fluid removed from my band I have experienced no choking... Any insight or experiences to this issue would be helpful..Thank you, Angel-Whetstone.

Revision band to bypass oct 4. 51lbs lost so far

Hello. I had my rny 2003 and due to my 3rd back surgery and not being able to do much of anything I gained my weight back. I feel so disgusted with myself. I felt so good and now so awful and it won't come off. My doc said she won't do a revision as the pouch is fine even though it's at 5-7cm. I do have a little tail that she's going to cut off during my hernia surgery but that's it. I'm tempted to go to someone else for possible revision.

Gastric Sleeve Revision Surgery
GmaDiana replied to Grek79Ital's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was revised from sleeve to bypass due to acid reflux. The insurance initially denied me because they wanted to me to see dietitian. My Dr did a Peer to Peer with the insurance and told them this wasn't about weightloss it was about ending the acid reflux that was harming my esophagus Hiatal hernia repair failed too. My stomach was pushing upwards ,contributing to the reflux. The insurance approved it then. I had my surgery on Nov.22,2016,My sleeve was in 2011. Doing good. One more week soft foods, then I can have shaved turkey, ham, chicken and other foods. -
Bypass Vs. Sleeve?
MarcusJY replied to rebeccamason's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had RNY NOV 23, 2016. I was going to have the Sleeve until one month before surgery. I just changed my mind after reading about people having sleeve to RNY revisions and gaining weight back with sleeve ( I know they gain with RNY but not quit as much). Other than the surgery itself life after is pretty much same, same diet, same recovery, pretty much same everything. So I was like if I'm going to have surgery, I'm only going to do it once and go with the gold standard. -
Revision from Band - Surgeon wants sleeve, I want bypass!
Pinkgirl1234 replied to Taunter's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am still in the process of fulfilling requirements for insurance submittal for revision to RNY. I have considered a sleeve, but after much research I have decided on RNY. I wish I had done it from the get go. I feel sleep and band are similar... I feel I have better chance at weight loss with RNY, as scared as I am to go through it... But I am soooo done with band! Make sure you have a very experienced surgeon....revision surgeries are not easy.Dont be afraid to change. -

Thanks MissPoodle. Did you have your revision surgery yet? If so, how far out are you and how has your experience been? -
Morning everyone! Revised 5/27, feeling great, had post surgery visit yesterday - all is well, besides the hematoma - posted a topic the other day - but all is well .... surgeon isn't that concerned. Yesterday morning, I was woken up by this weird feeling in my chest, sat up fast and boom - acid vomit - light green bile looking. Didnt think anything of it till today --- same thing - this time I didn't vomit but the acid/bile or whatever it is - is horrendous. I thought, or I was hoping, that the revision would take care of this - and this is worse than before the surgery -- fluke? I'm on Prilosec, but normally that doesn't work for me, so the surgeon gave me Protonix yesterday, which I love... always worked, as did Nexium. What could it be? Could it be lack of food? should I maybe eat something before going to bed - even if protein shake? Thanks - hope all is well with everyone!!!

I'd like to hear more about the pros and cons of doing the revision surgery at the same time as band removal. I do NOT want to have two surgeries if I can avoid it.

Revision Gone Wrong
Capt Derel replied to faith-hope-love's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Do you think the surgery might have gone better if it wouldnt have been a Ban to sleeve revision? I know that I am not clear for months thats why I dont press on it. The slower my transitional phases are the better in helping my stomach heal. Some people get the raw end of a deal and its very unfortunate it happened to you. But I am sure once you fully recover youll feel alot better -

I continue to read about bogies.. I'm a revision and my surgeon doesn't use them he uses the scope as measuring gauge I thought that was interesting -
Hi everyone! I am approximately 9 weeks pregnant and feel super bloated and have already gained a few pounds and it is making me extremely nervous.. I had wanted to talk to my surgeon about my constant stall no matter what I was doing and my terrible reflux to get revision surgery prior to me getting pregnant.. now, I am not due until November, and was wondering how long after I give birth should I approach the revision? I am not going to breast feed due to my line of work and would like to have the revision done while I’m on maternity leave so I don’t have to take additional time off from work. Anyone do this or have any pointers? I’m super stressed about the weight gain :(

I am wondering if anyone can tell me their wait times for having a lapband revision in Canada. I have been talking with a surgeon in QB but the cost may be prohibitive - Alberta Health Care covers part and so does my insurance - but the missing part could be too much for us right now. Any ideas would be appreciated and any personal experiences with how you went about getting your revision done here. Thanks Glenda
