  1. Ok so I was banded in 2007, I have been living with a slipped for a while now, I had gained some weight and I have been living on tums, I went to the Drs the other day and she took 1cc out, now no more heartburn, well she gave me a perscription so that helps. Now she said it was time for me to do a revision, so I said new band she said NO the sleeve, so she said she could take out the band and do the sleeve at the same time so now I have some thinking to do, has anyone gone from band to sleeze and if so how do you like it? Thanks, MP
  2. Is anyone else losing slowly? I have lost 20 pounds in 5 weeks Tuesday will be 6 weeks. I hit a stall week 3 for 2 weeks and this week I have not lost anything. I am able to eat 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup which is more than I was told which was 1/4 cup. I have a lot of head hunger. Trying not to get discouraged. I am so afraid I will be one of the lap band revision to RYN that doesn't lose. Any advise appreciated

    Ok Im Confused!

Nena, My psyche ended up being a revision patient with major complications afterwards. The last support group meeting that I attended with her (late July), she spent the entire meeting telling a pre-op and two new sleevers her horror story. I did report her to the surgeon when I saw him and recommended that he find someone ANYONE else to lead those meetings. I owe the pre-op a phone call, which I just remembered. Carb addiction is a bad thing, but I doubt carbs lead to crack! LMAO Carbs are NOT a gateway drug to anything except obesity, IMO. Truthfully, I think the sleeve is better than bypass because the sleeve does not have the dumping complication that many experience from the bypass. The sleeve also doesn't require re-routing the internal plumbing, which means recovery is much easier. Do what you and your doctor think is best for you! Good luck.

    Oh, Just Another Plastics Story

ROFL. I guess I will be a self-pay, too. I guess it's not "enough" loose skin for insurance to pay (ok, I won't exclude being lucky so lets wait and see, I'm financially prepared already for the worst case though). I'm looking into the Avelar technique and would have to go to Austria then but I essentially cancelled all the thoughts about plastics (well, almost all thoughts...) when surgeons recommended a revision and told me to expect another 10% weight loss. 6.something kg doesn't sound that much but at a height of 167 cm it means more than two BMI points. However, I can have a mommy makeover myself then when the time comes around. Surgeons in Germany usually don't do breasts and tummy in one sitting when insurance covers the procedures because of how hospital stays are paid. (Germany's health care system is sick in its own special way.) ETA: Yes, gotta see the bright site of being a self-pay. One can get what's medically safe and not what some insurance company thinks they're going to pay for.
  6. I will say a prayer for you but I know you won't need it! I had my lap band surgery in MX in 2010 but I am having my revision to sleeve here in FL. I had such a good experience in MX and was amazed at the hospital/doctor but didn't want the hassle of traveling with this surgery as I live in FL and it took forever to get to TJ. Anyway, good luck and let us know how you make out. I am scheduled for 6/17!
  7. Tomorrow at 7:30 am is my procedure. Praying for a one shot surgery, but it's in Gods hands and what's best will happen. Please keep me in your prayers. I'm so excited for the next step of this journey! Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Revisions?

I basically became bulimic I threw up everyday and had a hard time with "healthy" food. I just got approved for a revision for January 2014!
  11. According to one surgeon, the term roux en y just means an incision. So any of the surgeries like DS, Loop DS and MGB all use roux en y incisions. But in bariatric circles, the RNY pertains to the regular GB. All I know about the MGB is that it can be revised and is less invasive. As is the case with all of us, my biggest concern was/is weight regain over time. I chose the Loop DS because it seemed to be more effective with weight loss than the GB and MGB and equally as effective as the tradition DS with one less incision and less intestinal bypass, diarrhea, etc. As far as the DS vs the Loop DS (SADI), I am concerned about weight regain because of the significant difference in the amount of longer intestinal tract that is left with the Loop DS. But I also have to take into consideration the side effects of having that much shorter intestinal tract with the malabsorption issue.

WTH?! I need to stop reading!!!

Being scared is perfectly normal, but the re-assuring thing is that those that did experience leaks would still do it again (that I've read about/seen on youtube). DS does provide the best weight loss, but you really need to research to know what you're getting yourself into if you go that route. For a start you have to have a BMI of 40 or more or 35 with 2 co-morbities. With DS you don't experience dumping - you get that with RNY. With DS the bowel is re-sected to cause malabsorption for better weight loss. You malabsorb 80% of the fat you consume but also nutrients and you need to be serious about getting in your Vitamins and 100grams of Protein if you're a lady (not too sure of the amount for guys). You also need to get your blood quaterly initially to check if you need to up any vitamins or protein. OH has a DS board you that's a great place for info if you're interested. The good thing about VSG is that you can revise to DS if your weight loss isn't sufficient, but you may well not need it (that's mostly how VSG came about). DSers are meant to be prone to diarrhea, but there's a lot of talk on OH about DSers having constipation!! I did end up having to go into hospital a week after having my uvula removed (it's in your throat and nothing to do WLS) so I had that concern about WLS but I did just fine. I don't think I've read of anyone have that happen, so the advice of sip sip sip must be working. Keep reading and posting, as there's always more you can learn and I wish you every success in your Quest for WLS.

    I wish I hadn't gotten the band

Thanks for posting this, maestrita. Your thread has provoked an interesting discussion, and I'm glad no one has resorted to mud-slinging (yet). Since I revised (not very happily) to the sleeve, I've often been asked if I regret my initial choice of the band. I admit that my affection for my band colors my response to a question like that. No, I don't regret my band surgery. It's harder for me to answer 3 other common questions. One: Would I recommend the band to pre-ops as eagerly today as I did 6-7 years ago? I'm not sure. The answer depends as much on the person who's asking as it does on me, and there's no such thing as a perfect or one-size-fits-all WLS procedure. Two: Would I choose to revise again (if needed) today? No. Since most of my stomach is gone forever, there's only one other WLS option available to me now: duodenal switch. I'm having enough trouble with micro and macro-nutrient malabsorption with my sleeve. I can't imagine how I'd manage with the DS. Three: Would I recommend bariatric surgery (as a whole, not related to a particular procedure) to an obese person today? I'm just not sure. I guess I would if the person's co-morbidities were so severe that some kind of WLS could be life-saving.

    I wish I hadn't gotten the band

Has anybody reading this thread delved into the reasons (if any) given by that study's author for the higher re-operation rate in band patients? It would be interesting to look at that information. Based on my personal experience and the experience of some band patients I've known for a long time and know IRL (in real life), there are a number of reasons for re-operation, not all of them due to complications. Some revise to other procedures because of disappointing weight loss (and the disappointment can be related to concurrent medical issues that affect weight as well as unrealistic weight loss expectations). Some revise because of side effects. Some revise because of complications. Some revise because a band that worked very well for the 1st few years didn't respond to fills after pregnancy and birth of a child.
  15. I am 17 months post surgery and am just now eating 1000-1200 calories a day (I know some vets have different experiences and ate more calories more quickly than I). I can't imagine being able to get 1200 calories a day in 2 months post surgery. Also my nutrient macros are much different than yours. I aim for 100 + grams of protein a day and I drink 90-100 oz of liquid a day. I've lost 130ish lbs on my plan (not that my plan is anything special or the only one that works). I would make a few suggestions: (1) check with your surgeon or NUT about the 1200 calories which seem more like a maintenance level and less like a weight loss level; (2) ditch the half cup mashed potatoes (and similar carb heavy foods that lack nutritional value) and substitute for a soft veggie if you still have room after eating your protein; (3) try reducing your calories to 1000 and see if it kick starts your weight loss. Since I was not a revision patient I don't know how that affects loss or calorie consumption so my advice may not apply to you at all. Good luck!
  16. I was banded in 2001 and had a similar experience. I had it removed in September 2011 because it was slipped, pouch was dialated, danger it could suddenly slip further and cut off ability to swallow Water. I had the same fears you express about the sleeve so I didn't commit to revision. I was so hungry and frankly kinda down after the band removal. I was grieving that whole failure. Anyway my raging hunger made me realize I needed WLS and I was sleeved in Dec 2011 I lost 150# in 14 m months to get to goal. The sleeve has worked for me but it is still alot of effort for me. No pain or vomiting though!

    Band Comes Out Tomorrow!

Hi Lisa, I have tricare as well here's some things you need to know I'm triwest in Washington but its prob the same. 1) banded 2009 tricare covered approval in 2 days 2) removal tomorrow tricare covered due to complications approval a week 3) tricare will not cover the sleeve I wanted the sleeve as well. You can only get the sleeve done at a mtf I know for a fact jblm does them as my friend was revised band to sleeve there. 4) I love my surgeons and want to stick with them. Seems to me bypass is a more guaranteed weight loss with less complications than the sleeve. I am tired of complications 5) I hope to ask my surgeons office to submit for bypass next week even if surgery is out a few months. From all I have read if your band either failed due to complications or you still have not lost weight tricare will cover a revision. Good luck im in your shoes as well!

Hi, everyone just wanted to say I am home with my 34 bougee stomach and I am wicked sore and tired. The hospital stay was a complete exercise in patience and futility. I am so excited to be done but man oh man I am tired and sore. I hope all who got done on the 12th are safe and doing well. I will catch up with you as soon as I can stand to be on the computer again. OH PS, the revision was the worst part. He went threw my old incision scars and put staples in to close my wounds. WELL one of the wounds is stapled so taught it is pinching my skin and that is making my pain increasingly awful. Got to love liquid Loritab. xxoxoxo
  19. I am scheduled for a revision 01|17|10 with Dr Aceves. I am nervous... but I have traveled for WLS surgery before. This time MX is actually closer. haha.

    Sleeve to bypass question

Hummm. I was thinking that maybe if they do change it then it would be smaller for me because I swear my sleeve was left too big from day one. The surgeon thinks I just have fast gastric emptying and that’s why I feel like I can eat more but I hope we will know for sure when he does the scope in a couple of weeks. It will be nice if I do finally get an answer as to why I was always able to eat more than everyone else. I was just thinking that even though statistics say I will lose more with SADI revision that I may be differnt if one involves changing the stomach and the other does not.
  21. Update: I got my date for the DS revision, coming up in 2 weeks. I have only 1 week of pre diet this time around. Anyone else?

    Surgiversary!

I had my revision one year ago today. I’m shocked and amazed at the changes that have occurred this year. My boobs have disappeared, I lost a lot of hair... but more importantly I’m no longer overweight. I still have a belly (and lose skin) but I’m learning to love myself just as I am. I’m so thankful to be on this road. Now I just need to get my butt back in the gym, good news is that it is within walking distance now. No regrets. ❤️
  23. Good luck today! Wishing you a great surgery and an amazing post-op! The reflux seems to be a thing when I don’t sleep slightly inclined. The dr said it would subside over time but told me to get Pepcid complete chewable... LIFESAVER. I take one if it happens and it knocks it out immediately but it hasn’t been much of a thing the last few days. No bathroom issues yet... first poop (sorry lol) was last night and it was fine. Not real gassy or anything like that. But I haven’t eaten anything solid yet so only time will tell lol. I can already tell weight loss is slower this go round, because I kept a good chart with the VSG. By now I had lost 11 lbs and now I’m at 6, excluding the 11lbs all the hospital IV fluids put on me. Realistically, revision alone I expect maybe 75-100. With my trainer I hope to lose 150. I’m much more motivated to exercise now because I’m not doing this again. Whew, no way! I’ve already started back walking up to 20 mins approved by my doctor. Please give us an update when you can!

    Anyone been approved by Aetna?

I'm sorry to hear this. So, are you able to do the self-pay route then? I feel fortunate that I have Aetna, they seem to have a rather generous WLS part of their coverage. I know that my revision will be covered when I decide on the right doctor for me. Although, I don't take anything for granted with the changes with the Healthcare reform- who knows what benefits will be cut next year so I will get the revision done this year one way or another.
