3 weeks post op and OUCH! What is that feeling?
LindafromFlorida replied to Slimk's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A small piece of very soft chicken nearly killed me about 4-5 weeks out. I went back to soft foods 2 more weeks. I never want to feel that scare again. You should cut the boiled egg in about 10 small pieces and eat it with a fork. For that matter, this would work on many foods. -
5 Days Post-op tired of liquids
Lunabeane replied to lilnora2's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If your Dr. says Clear Liquids then stick to clear liquids. My Dr. was very strict with his requirements. Bullion, Water, crystal light, broth, Jello...no pudding, creamed soups, cool whip, or anything that you couldn't see through. There is a reason why he has the requirements and you trusted him to perform your surgery...so you should try to adhere to his requirements as much as possible. I was two weeks clear liquid and 1 week full liquid before transitioning to pureed and then onto adaptive. -
HELP!!!! I've been burping for hours!
shy_one replied to littlefroggy's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I agree with Thomas about microwaving. Once you start solids, it's best to avoid "dry" foods like bread. They just end up getting stuck. When I first went on solids, I ate a lot of chunky Soups, canned meat, and of course my Protein shakes. If I wanted chicken, I boiled it with lots of spices - it comes out really moist. I definitely burp more than I did before the surgery. But I've found that the burping is a sign that I've overeaten or I ate too fast. Another sign for me is if I start to sneeze. Your burping might be because you ate the microwaved meal AND the bread together. Hopefully, your burping will subside soon - Brenda -
Watch out: Your irritated intestines & you...
gp3 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Ended up in the ER, little stay in the hospital due to blocked intestines about 2 weeks after surgery. Well hydrated, eating only purée & watching what I was eating turns out I have some inflammation & swelling - hopefully not permanent - which ended up creating blockages. Amazingly painful, takes X-Ray & CT Scans to figure out - not something you want to encounter. Back home & relaxing, on baby food and plenty of Water. Watch what you eat, drink plenty & listen to your body! -
Agreed. In fact I bought single serving packs of Protein powders & drinks pre-op and sampled them to decide which ones I liked and could tolerate. I then only bought enough to last 2 weeks post-op as I was concerned because I had heard your taste buds can sometimes change. In addition to buying from GNC/Vitamin Shoppe you can also try CVS, Rite Aid, Whole Foods. There are a few places online that sell samples as well. On an economical side, CVS whey Protein powder is only $20 for a 2lb container. Before you buy antacids or stool softeners find out if your surgeon will prescribe them. My insurance covered the omeprazole and colace my doctor recommended. I stocked my house with enough food to get through the 2 week full liquid phase that my program requires. Veg broth, herbal tea, almond milk, greek yogurt The only other thing I did was clean my house and make sure I could feed and care for my cat.

10 days til surgery...need pre-op advice
RestlessMonkey replied to Bluwho's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I know I had some fears and misconceptions that have pretty much dissolved into mist for me... For one thing, I can eat anything. I know this isn't true for everyone, and I had my time to grapple with things like "can I really REALLY live without bread?" Well, I don't have to. Not everyone has a bunch of food issues; some only have one or two things they need to avoid, some don't have trouble with anything. So as my granny would say, don't borrow trouble. My doc said his goal was for me to be able to eat anything but in smaller portions, and I kept repeating that to myself when I'd read horror stories. Something worked because 1 year out, at my "green zone", I can eat any food I want. Things like "don't drink while you're eating" may sound horrible. "Take pencil eraser sized bites". Yowza. OK.. I don't drink when I'm eating any more because it HURTS. It's an easy habit to get into, easier than you'd think. My doc lets us drink 15 min after a meal (all are different so follow your doc's guidelines) but now that I'm in the routine and get my 64 oz of Water in each day, I'm often not even thirsty after a meal and will go an hour easily before drinking. Eraser sized bites? Too tiny to chew! I take a bite about 1/2 to 2/3 my norm. I chew it to mush (I counted a few times, being of a scientific mind LOL and for me that's generally about 40 chews if it's something like steak or chicken) That becomes 2nd nature too. Your body learns how a bite "feels" before you swallow. There's a learning curve but it's not bad. I don't know what if any of the rules or life after is giving you pause, but odds are that it may not be as harsh, or hard, or onerous as you think. Personally for me the BIGGIE was no carbonation, because I like beer. I don't drink very often any more, maybe 2-3 times a year. I had to really look at it and think hmmm...keep beer and be fat? If someone with power came to you and said "give up beer and I will make you slim" would you do it? Well, yes. So that became a non-issue. And then, to my happy surprise, my doc last time told me that now that I'm healed if it didn't hurt me I could have an occasional beer or soda. Oh yay! Again not all are the same, do what your doc says. But things can and do work out well with the band. -
Just because you paid $14,000 out of your pocket for surgery doesn't mean you magically became perfect. This is a learning process and you have to learn what to do and how to do it. Don't worry about this hurting your band. My surgeon let us move on to solid food as soon as we felt like it, so I can promise you it's okay. When you get filled the hunger will start to subside. Don't beat yourself up too much until then at least.

Watch out: Your irritated intestines & you...
gp3 replied to gp3's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
More educational than anything, good object lesson on why to stick to the diet (I do, 100%), to rest and to stay hydrated. While I did not anticipate the return to the hospital (ER first, which always takes forever it seems) the net result was a good outcome and hopefully no long term issues. I'm back home, tolerating foods well (puree only at this point) and my incisions and drain are at least superficially healed so that is all good for now. -
I lost weight faster PRE-op.
melodymouse replied to makemyownluck's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Gross fact! There is a reason for that. Obese people carry around undigested food in the folds of their intestines. When you start to restrict your intake, your body uses that "stored food" up. That's why most people usually have a bigger weight loss in the first couple of weeks on any diet! You may not necessarily be losing fat during those first weeks but just cleaning out your intestines. In addition, your body is trying to recover from major surgery. Be patient and stick to your program guidelines. It will happen!! = ) -
That's exactly what it feels like - for months and months (probably 18) the band completely cut hunger for me, then over the past 18 months, gradually appetite has increased again. Not huge physical hunger, not at all, just an *interest* in food. I'm always ready to eat again, hungry or not. I finish a satisfying meal and think half an hour later I feel like a little x, y or z. It makes perfect sense to me that my body has taken up producing this pesky chemical in normal quantities for me again. I can manage it, but its interesting how resilient our bodies are. I'm pretty sure too that if I just remain as active as I am, weight wont be a real problem for me again.

Does puking always scare you?
happy2lose replied to iwannabealoser's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
"Puking" isn't the same with the band as you are describing. When we banded people vomit the food is not digested yet, therefore doesn't contain stomach acid. It actually isn't even the same as vomiting. It is called "PB" (productive burping) and the food just comes out. It's really not as bad as you think so don't sweat the small stuff. -
Sorry - I feel kind of stupid but ... Within a post, how do you copy the text? When I highlight the text > right click > there's no option for CUT or COPY. I don't see an icon in the toolbar for this either. I wanted to cut and paste a few recipes I found in the food FORUM to add to my personal cookbook I have saved on my PC. Thanks

My band has settled down quite a bit now. I stayed on liquids/mushy foods all day yesterday, didn't eat past 6pm and exercised last night, I had NO ACID REFLUX. I got to sleep a full 7 hours!!!! I woke up feeling great! I still am a bit tight, but not too tight at all, this might be perfect.....we'll see if it continues to get looser. Now, I just need to keep my exercising up - not to get side tracked - and continue watching my portion sizes.

Correct restriction or not?? Please help me...
Susie Girl 75 posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi Everyone! I need some help... I had my third fill last week. I wish I could tell you how many cc's I have by my doctor wont tell me that. When I ask, he tells me 'enough' ... ok, fine... so he doesn't want me getting hung up on a number... I understand that totally. So, here's my situation. I can eat everything except for bread and bagels... I start to pb and get stuck, etc... you know the drill. But on most all other foods like chicken breat, veggies, (whole wheat) Pasta, etc...I do chew well and I have noticed that I am eating slower than I used to!!! The thing that has me worried is taht I can eat more than just a few bites. Not that much more, but more than the suggested 1/2 cup at a time... I find that it keeps me full for hours after and I am not hungry first thing in the morning like I used to be. I have also noticed I don't realy have a desire to snack inbetween meals, which is good... I guess I know that it's working, to a point but with the amount I can still eat, even though it's all healthy stuff... does that mean that I maybe need a slight fill still??? Can the veterans help out the newbie??? Thanks, Chi-Town Susie Girl -
Eating More Calories
Pookeyism replied to desertmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would say you could at least follow it a few months to see...I think I do better when I am on the higher range of my calories. Even if I don't lose as much weight I feel better and have a better outlook. Good idea about the protien, I have been toying with that myself. Natural fiber, it seems, is much better than any supplement. I really seem to be doing well (mentally - feeling sharp and alert and sleeping better) since I began to stick to my "5 best foods" blueberries walnuts EVOO or another good fat source either a spoonful on tambiko, or salmon, or talapia...often made with the evoo. Prune, or apple peel, or squash - and just maybe a little oatmeal. REAL oatmeal, lol!!!! Smaller amounts but nearer real suggested amounts. also if I can: pumpkin sunflower seeds hummus cauliflour just soooo much stuff now that I seem to enjoy on a different level, it is like my body knows to enjoy it. -
I am 25 and I weigh 308 lbs. today. I started my journey at 324 lbs. I want to know if any one else is on the same road as I am. I have been obese for my entire life. I can't walk a flight of stairs without getting out of breath. Yesterday was the first time in about five years that I got out of the house and walked around the neighborhood. I was always a couch potato. I would eat all day long. Any time my mood changed good or bad I would eat. Anytime I watched T.V. I would eat. I just ate a bunch of junk food like, nachos, bags of chips, candy bars, chocolate chip cookies, buttered popcorn, etc. Even after eating all day I would always take something sweet upstairs to bed. I have even let my daughter follow the same paths as I have. She is five years old and she wants McDonald's everyday after school because her granny always takes her. She is not too big now (51 lbs.) but her doctors always check her blood pressure because she is in the top 10% of her age on the weight chart. When I decided to get my life together and stop killing myself I decided to turn her around on the right track also. She cries out in the stores and throws temper tantrums because her granny won't take her to McDonald's anymore and I threw out all of the sweets and fattening foods out of our house. She is coping better now. I bought sugar free Popsicles, fat free pudding a jell-o, and different healthy snacks that she can have. I also don't let her have these things until she eats her meals including vegetables. I have forced myself to stay on my four week EAS AdvantEdge pre-op diet. I will be banded on June 13th. Every time I see a restaurant or a commercial about food and start craving unhealthy foods, I just imagine myself fitting into my size 12 nightie. I would like someone to give me encouraging words or tell me about your experiences with you weight issues.

Some people do well with the band, I didn't and had it removed after 14 months. I suggest you find as much info as possible as to how it's going to feel physically and emotionally to be banded to find if it's the right procedure for you. I was fat all my life and don't eat a ton of food but sometimes the ones that will keep me from losing. I'm also 49 and on many meds that affect my WL in many ways. Hopefully your surgeon can answer all your questions. Good luck to you Nancy.

As you lose weight around your abdomen, your band loosens. I am near goal and don't think I will need an unfill; I can eat small portions of most foods now. However, some people do go in for a slight unfill when they get to goal. I can eat most foods if I eat slowly and eat small portions, although I got through a whole hamburger, bun and all, on Saturday. I had to eat it really slowly, and was still eating long after everyone else was done. The next day I couldn't get through half a hot dog, though. If I weren't trying to get off the last 6 lb I would be able to eat enough to satisfy me without too much effort, and would not be gaining as long as I make good food choices. I will have to really count my calories and watch what I eat to get rid of these last few pounds, though. When I think about it, this is how my normal thin friends eat--watching out for nutritional value and portion size, but not obsessing over a small treat now and then. Maybe I'm almost normal now!

first fill today after gaining back 12 lbs
AngieW_RN replied to marfar7's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You have to exercise and choose the right foods. The band is going to help you eat less, but that won't help (especially until you get to your sweet spot) unless you are choosing high protein, low carb, low sugar foods! I know this time period is hard b/c I'm in and I have pretty much stopped losing weight. I'm hoping a fill or two will help a LOT! (especially since everyone is asking me how much weight I've lost!) -
So this morning I did not have to put gauze on myself. One small step for man and one less reason to feel like a war casualty. Yesterday I got all kinds of buzzkilling news from Dr' Aceves office: gaby told me I could not get dental work for six weeks, laser surgery for six weeks, that I could not swim yet or go in the hot tub for three months and the same went for leaving the country. Chee. What's a girl without a stomach supposed to do with herself in that case? Well, yesterday, things being as they were, I went and blew 150 dollars on salon services just because I had no energy for anything else and no interest in a cheeseburger. I got summer highlights -- you know, hair stripes, caramel zebra, and then I went to the nail salon to get a mani/pedi. I don't know how often people around here indulge in this kind of thing, but when you can't eat any solid food, your nightly tearful exhaustion spell is about to set in, and you can't do anything of things at your health club that you want to do, this is not such a bad option. Lay back on the massage chair, dip your feet into the pristinely clean basin and watch the light show commence from the bottom of it, blue and purple and pink lights in swirling Water. There was a big screen tv with a slideshow of waterfalls and mountain vistas and iguanas, and spooky Yanni music filling the air. My toes are now electric blue, my hair is yellow zebra and my nails are Vampire Shellack. Today I hit the health club, depressed I could not swim but I went on the AirDyne for twenty minutes, and then I went to weigh myself on the industrial fatperson scale they have in the ladies locker room. There is weirdness with scales in my life, but according to that one I have lost 23 pounds since the last time I was there a month ago; and I only lost about a pound on the pre-op diet. Then I went to the library. I decided since I have nothing else to do with myself, I might as well read something. B plus. On the mend. And five more days until I can swim and eat food.

Made the bmi but now.....
KaiserKid replied to kimberb's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First off, I'm so sorry for your losses. I work in cancer research and I know the trials that families go through, especially if it is a long, drawn-out process. I lost my mom in 2015 from a heart attack, and in a strange way I'm thankful she passed quickly and that's something I don't think I'd say unless I worked in the field I do... I have had depression from a very young age, and I had to explain to the psychologist how my last major depressive episode was 2015 after my mom died (complicated relationship), and I was also planning my wedding, which was also super stressful. She asked me if I thought my feelings about my mom were regular grief or true depression, and I think it's important to know where the grief ends and the depression takes over. My own med history says I was on prozac, zoloft, paxil, celexa, and wellbutrin for my depression, not all at the same time of course (age ~15 - 22ish). I have depression and bipolar and alcoholism on every branch of my family tree, so I was careful to explain the situations I was under while taking these meds, and how I handle it now. If you show your resilience and that your coping mechanisms are healthy ones, they should clear you. The fact you are seeking help and are on a stable dose of antidepressants shows you take initiative to properly help yourself, instead of self-medicating with food of alcohol, for example. Best of luck! -
Having a really hard time today
HDubSleevery replied to HDubSleevery's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have the Gatorade G2 and Propel packets. Today at the luncheon, they had a Breakfast buffet with all kinds of juice, coffee, and baked goods. For lunch they had a grilled chicken wrap, potato salad, fruit, apple pie, and sweet tea. I spent a lot of time talking with people. I was also thinking of food I would be able to have later in the process. I figured the grilled chicken would be good and the fruit. I wrote a letter to Gaby asking her about the heartburn. I am still having it even after a Nexxium in the morning and one at night. I'm sure they will get back to me soon. I will put the baby to bed early tonight and go to bed early myself. -
I was banded December 19th, 2013! I am glad I made this choice, to-date I've lost 83 lbs on the Lap-Band, 275 lbs on day of my surgery to 192 lbs this morning (7/16/2014). Also went from a pant size of 46 to 32! I still have my struggles/questions, where I feel like: I am eating more than 1/2 cup of food, eating too fast and I don't know if I've found my green zone, etc. I currently have 10 cc in on a 14 cc band. Starting on the day of my surgery, I started walking, after 2 months I was cleared to start exercising and joined a gym. I started walking on the treadmill and weight lifiting, increased that to running, started running up to 4 miles a day and weight lifiting, and did those pounds come off! Now, I've joined a boot camp style gym where I go 5 times a week for 50 mins and still run every other day 3 - 4 miles. I've learned to eat more healthy such as: salmon, ground turkey, chicken, with veggies. Sometimes, in the morning I don't feel hungry, so I'll just drink a Protein shake or have oatmeal. I still have an urge to have a bad meal, but it's very limited, because I am afraid of getting stuck or taking too large of bite. I've only had 2 times where I gotten stuck one: the chicken was too dry and took a big bite; second: ate a hamburger that was grilled and was too dry and took a big bite. I feel that I still struggle with eating way too fast and eating more than 1/2 a cup, but the P.A. at my surgeons office, told me that I shouldn't be too concerned as, I am exercising a lot, and she liked that I was pushing myself at the gym. Does anyone feel like they have found their green zone or still think they eat too fast? If so, what do you do slow down on your eating habits?
