Exercise and Loose Skin
catwoman7 replied to JenniP's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I could walk right away. I was released to do everything else except for weights at four weeks out. I think I had to wait eight weeks for weights. how much loose skin you end up with depends on a lot of factors - age, how much you lost, how long you were obese, genetics. If there's a lot of it, there's not much you can do other than have plastic surgery. For most of us, it's pretty easy to hide in clothes, though, even if it's bad. -
How long after surgery did you start exercising? And what have you done to help with loose skin? Thank you!

Do you see yourself as thin yet?
PollyEster replied to JRT Mom's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Pre-surgery, I never dared to imagine that I'd eventually weigh less after surgery than I did in high school, but at almost 11 months post-op, I'm tiny and do see myself as thin now. I also am finding that I deeply appreciate my loose skin (which is not too bad at all considering the amount of weight I've lost), perceiving it as a battle wound, perhaps even something to feel proud of in the way some women who've had a mastectomy are proud of their scars. I can honestly say I love the way I look. But more than this, I love the way I feel: strong, fit, healthy, and physically able to do anything I set my mind to. I ♥ VSG. -
I DID IT ! I hit MY weight goal. NOT my surgeon's goal 10 years ago when I started this advent....that was to weigh145 pounds. Then he agreed that having started at 320, (and then 5'3" ) that a more logical goal would be in the area of 160 to 170. The lowest I ever got was 175. And I did not maintain that for even a moment. The the next 8 years of losing my only sibling to the Flu at the age of 49 (please get your flu shot) and then my surviving parent a few years later... personal illness and drama.... and creeping weight gain.... 14 months ago at 220 pounds and 63 years old I got my act back together. I went back to eating protein - first and foremost - protein, healthy vegetables and fruit, and a smattering of healthy whole grain carbs and healthy fats. I ate mindfully - and intentionally to fuel my mind and body. I ate a treat daily I slowly changed HOW I eat, what I eat, and when I eat it. I did not announce it, I did not talk about it. I just did it. I lost 45 pounds in the past 14 months. Not fast weight loss, but steady And I may decide to lose a bit more. Or not. Thank you for being my sounding board. Thank you for being here for support. Today I am thankful for my sleeve, for saggy baggy hanging skin and not caring. And for being healthy !

Never had tofu skin before but it doesn’t really have much of a taste. I really like it and it does the trick! This is the one I purchased: Yamamotoyama Sushi Soy Wrapper, Original, 20 Count https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00886GG24/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_l2wwFbWD50SCJ -

Ooh soy paper is a good idea. I've never had it before- is it kind of like tofu skin? I've made this recipe in the past for wontons, and they come to about 30 calories each... most of which is in the wrapper. I'll have to check out the soy paper! https://soupeduprecipes.com/wontons-in-chili-oil/ -

@Mum23Boys I have had food intolerances, eggs, peanut butter and wheat. It took me longer than I anticipated to get out of each food “stage”. I still prefer more puréed foods, I have tried some normal foods and they still don’t sit well and come up. I am just 2 months out so I prefer to take it slow and easy. I add protein to almost everything, in order to get in the required daily amount. Sometimes it is hard to do. I sincerely believe the surgery is worth some loose skin and sagging. Those can be fixed if you choose, I probably will, eventually. This was my decision and I did it for me. I wanted to feel better and be around for my grandchildren. I already have much more energy despite having other health issues. Do it for you, you deserve it! -

to be honest, I can't think of anything major. Many of us have chronic constipation, but that can be managed (I take a capful of Miralax daily to prevent it). And you're right - the saggy skin (I had mine removed, but it was easy enough to hide when I had it - I doubt anyone knew about it but me and my husband). Many people experience hair loss during the first few months, but that's temporary and often minor (some lose a lot - but most don't lose enough for other people to notice). It grows back. And of course you'll be tired the first few weeks, but that's true of any major surgery, really. some people with RNY have dumping syndrome; some with VSG have acid reflux (sleevers can also get dumping syndrome, but it's more common with bypass). Dumping can be managed, too, by eating the way you're supposed to eat. about 5% of RNY'ers have a stricture (or two) during the first three months or so post-surgery, but that's also minor and an easy fix. patients of either surgery can also experience low blood pressure during the first few months - so they get dizzy (and a few have fainted) when they're transitioning from lying down or sitting to standing. If you're one of them, you have to remember to transition slowly. you'll also have to take vitamins for life with either surgery, but it's more critical for RNY'ers because of the malabsorption factor. Skipping on that can cause big problems down the road. Other than iron, though, deficiencies are rare as long as you keep on top of your supplements (iron is an exception because some people don't absorb iron well via oral supplements - they have to get occasional infusions. Luckily, most people can absorb it through oral supplements just fine, though...) can't think of any other common side effect at the moment, but maybe others will chime in -
Hi so can give it to me straight - tell me all the bad things nobody will tell you. I dont want to hear the good things just the bad things ... Not sure if getting a bypass or the sleeve yet. My tits are going to sag and skin is going to sag - I know from previous weight loss. I have a huge backside god only knows where that will end up. This journey isnt about vanity to me but my husband might not like it. I am having my lapband out (after 8 years of ups and downs) soon and am going through the NHS (UK) programme so I have a year or more before surgery. Is it worth the bad stuff? Embarrassed how my body has turned out. Eeek! everything else failed due to willpower.

Pics of skin after weight loss?

Before surgery I had a tendency towards low pressure, would have energy drops & took longer to get over viruses, infections, etc. After surgery the energy drops did get worse but now it’s much like it used to be. My blood pressure is always low now. So not a lot of change bug picture. We did discover I have Gilbert’s Syndrome which explains a lot about my energy drops & long recovery times. I tend to eat every 2-3hrs, but can go longer, & that helps with the energy drops. (Also, because I’m still in that golden time of a fast metabolism, if I skip a meal or snack a day or two in a row, I can drop weight quickly which I try to avoid.) The hair loss, while challenging to accept at the time it happens, is sort of nothing now. I’d suffered hair loss after a particularly stressful time at work a few years back & it grew back then so I knew it would again this time. I think I’m pretty fortunate about the amount of loose tummy skin I have. I tend to wear waisted skirts & pants & don’t have any concerns with skin pooching. Might be different in hipsters though. I also have a very fitted fine knit dress I wear with ordinary full briefs & tights without any noticeable issue but that is me. My friend swears by spanx & clothing of denser spandex fabric to control her sagginess. -
I saw my plastic surgeon and he is going to do a local injection to revise some problem spots from my brachioplasty. He also want to do a little steroid injections at some of the darker, thicker incision areas. My bypass surgeon said never to have any anti inflammatory or steroids. He said to not even have a steroid injection in a joint etc. He is very conservative. Has anyone else ever had steroid injections locally just skin deep after bypass? Would you ever consider it? If I do can I take tums or something to help prevent an issue. The steroid obviously wouldn't be taken orally but would go into my blood stream.

hair loss is another thing that most (maybe all?) of us vets, in retrospect, wonder why we worried so much about. It's temporary - and for many of us, we're the only ones who notice the loss (I know some people lose a lot - a very noticeable amount - but most of us don't). It's a minor annoyance in the grand scheme of things. whether or not you need Spanx depends on where your loose skin is - and how much you have. I was apple-shaped, so I don't/didn't have much on my hips, butt, and thighs. Mine was almost all in my gut. And yes - I just tucked it into jeans or "tummy control" leggings, and always wore a slightly oversized, long-ish top. Ta da! Excess skin gone. I'm sure I was the only one who noticed it. Spanx would work, too, if you're not wearing something that it can be tucked into. as far as 500 calories, that's really just the first month or so. From about that point until maybe a year out, I was eating 600-800 calories a day, usually closer to 800. At around the year mark, I was at around 1000-1200. Now, in maintenance, I eat 1500-1700 a day. I did develop what we think was reactive hypoglycemia at about two years out, but I was told to eat something every 3-4 hours and, if I eat a carb, to be sure to pair it with a protein. That seemed to take care of it... -
I don’t doubt that - I do t want to be obese anymore. But I’ve known people that have lost weight (sleeve or not) and then obsessed over their new body not being perfect. I know someone who had the skin removed and is still critical of their body but infinitely happier that they aren’t obese anymore. If that makes sense. Perfectionist, I guess. I don’t see that for myself. I am proud of my body that gave me my babies. It worked hard, lol. I’m just trying to get a hold on issues that might pop up. I sew my own clothes - but have stopped so I can save my fabric for when I lose weight - but I wonder sometimes if I wear a dress - will I need spanx? Can you just tuck the extra skin in your drawers? Lol. Is it noticeable to the rest of the world? Things like this. I also worry about hair loss but I know I won’t be able to do much about that should that time come. The other thing I wonder about is what happens after surgery the first few months when your caloric intake is like 500 calories? Do you get that low blood sugar feeling all the time? If go too long without eating I get really shaky and dizzy. Does that happen or does your body somehow adjust? I’m wondering because I will have kids to keep up with after surgery and if I constantly feel shaky that’s not going to work well.

personally, I don't know ANYONE who would take being morbidly obese over having some excess skin. Excess skin isn't fun - but it is INFINITELY better than being obese! I did eventually have mine removed, but I would have taken it ANY DAY over weighing over 300 lbs again! -
Thanks everyone for helping me! I have family members that had the sleeve done years ago. Both had tummy tucks and other stuff done. I doubt I will be able to afford any of that. I’m a mom to 2 kiddos, the youngest is 2 and I have the mom tum. So I have all the stretch marks and I know I’ll have the excess skin. I’m trying to get myself mentally prepared for it though. I would really hate to lose the weight and then be unhappy because I have extra skin. I don’t think it will bother me but sometimes life surprises you! I gained all of my weight with pregnancies and I was always thin my entire life until then. It took me about 5 years to actually not only recognize myself in the mirror but accept that was who I am now. I’m having the surgery because I am in pain with the extra weight and I need to be healthy for my kids. Like everyone I’ve tried for years to lose it on my own but I’m 40 years old now and it’s just getting harder and harder. I’m trying to sort of brace myself for things as best I can. I know I won’t know or have answers until I have the surgery but I guess this sort of helps to read.

I guess it depends on how much loose skin you have, and the quality of the skin. Mine was so stretched out that it was of very poor quality - so nothing was going to help that except for surgery. But I weighed almost 400 lbs at my heaviest, so....my skin was pretty badly stretched out!

I am looking for the same thing honestly, and it is the reason I decided to join a bariatric forum! So, Google says there are a whole bunch of things that help with skin elasticity (the main being collagen), and skin elasticity is the key words when trying to have skin that either stretchs without stretch marks or skin shrinking and going back into place without as much loose skin. Some of the things I have seen listed are collagen, retinal, reinoids, hyaluronic acid, genistein isoflavones, witch hazel extract, cocoa flavanoids, etc... but I have been having a hard time finding a single pill or powder with multiple things (like a multivitamin) and it has been frustrating... and I am absolutely certain I am not the only person who has wanted something like this, and something has got to exist, but I just can't find a good one. Right now, One of the things I am looking at is this: https://shop.purityproducts.com/skin-health/ultimate-collagen-formula A couple of things I like about it is that it does not just contain collagen, but some pre-cursor proteins to help your body to make it's own collagen, and some other things to help absorption and stabilization. And even more so, as a scientist myself, I love the fact that they actually referenced pubmed articles which are actual peer-reviewed scientific work... not just opinion pieces like many fad kinds of products list. Still... although a pretty advanced collagen supplement, it is ONLY collagen, and I really wish I could find something that is not to expensive that is far more comprehensive.

Here is a look at my journey. the bottom pic is most recent. once i got down to my goal weight, i started focusing on putting on muscle for my extra skin. it has definitely helped in some areas, but i think no matter how much i workout ill always have the belly skin. my arms have tightened up a lot from the working out. my legs as well. the only real bad extra skin i have is again, at the bottom of my stomach. but ive accepted it and dont think im going to do surgery. Life is good. ill take the extra skin any day over being bigger and unhappy.

My problem areas are my breasts and tummy, followed by arms and thighs. All of which can be hidden under clothes. I’m having PS in January to address the boobs and tummy just for my own vanity and I want to wear bikinis! I’ll take the loose skin over fat any day though!!

I lost 80 lbs. at 50. The only skin that bothers me is under my arms and my lower abdomen. I looked at my stomach and some pictures of stomachs of women who had babies and decided it looked fine, so no surgery for me. My arms, though... I would imagine weightlifting would help.

Yep, age, amount of weight lost & genetics will influence how much loose skin you end up with. I’ve lost 90lbs and am 55. For me, the last 20lbs was when the loose skin really made its appearance. I have bat wings (but I did before - they’re just empty wings now), a bit of a saggy belly pooch (a good pinch), a small pinch above my calf muscles behind my knees & a butt that’s more drop than pop. The worst are my breasts (not droopier just empty) and the skin that’s slipping down my inner thighs. The most unexpected is the loosish skin on my hands & fingers. My face looked gaunt with some deepish grooves initially but looks much better now. I’m not intending to go down the surgery path. The healing time & as I tend to scar are negatives for me. Wish I knew they could top up your upper breasts with your own fat before I lost the weight - I would have had some lipo back then & stored it for use now. Lol! I just dress around my arms & thighs. I’d never wear shorty shorts so no loss there & I can get away with sleeveless, but not strappy, as long as I don’t wave my arms about too much. 😁 -
Dinner out tonight with hubby. New linen shorts (size 4) and white sandals (size 7). This time last labor day holiday during loosing phase - size 12 shorts and size 8 flats. It feels wonderful this summer to be leaner and lighter at goal. Hoping everyone enjoyed a safe and happy holiday weekend!

I have lost 100 pounds and have very little visible loose skin while wearing clothes. My stomach, breasts and bum are the worst affected areas which I plan to rectify with surgery. I have been doing bodypump (weights) classes consistently since March and it has made a massive difference. It really helped tighten my skin and I now have visible muscle in my arms and back. If not for the belly skin I'd have visible abs!!!!! I know they are in there lol. I think it is the luck of the draw as to how much loose skin you end up with, I think genetics and age play a big part. I've also had three breastfed babies so some of the damage to my breasts and stomach stem from that. -
Hi Everyone I had a panniculectomy done in December to remove my excess skin on my abdomen. I am wondering if anyone else has had this and still 9 months later had significant pain when wearing a belt, or jeans that fit just right? It is not instant, but within an hour or two of wearing something around my waist that's a little tight, I have significant inner abdominal pain. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Thanks, Sarah

CatWoman7 is definitely right. I did nto plan on having plastic surgery when I planned on my Gastric Bypass. I knew my body wouldn't fully recover, and I would have a "pouch" of fat, but I was okay with that. I started getting really bad infections under my belly, where my skin would overhang and also in my belly button, i was provided powder by my surgeon to help with the itching/pain, but it was constant. I ended up visiting my surgeon for three months in a row, they documented the issue, and my insurance covered my surgery almost completely, but it all depends on your insurance.
