    Thoughts on revision?

Maybe you should change your post to “Only looking for people to affirm my decision.” Get the revision, do you think that will change your relationship with food? You can’t tell me that you haven’t been eating or have been “sick” when you’ve regained most of your weight...

    Thoughts on revision?

Revision won’t change your eating habits. Maybe look into joining Overeaters Anonymous or go to a Bariatric Surgery Support Group. You’ve had heartburn and other symptoms SINCE the surgery and you are wanting revision 4 years later? That doesn’t sound right. If something was wrong with the surgery you should have gone back to your doctor immediately. You need to face the true issues behind your weight. Even with bypass, you will continue to have problems unless you address them head on.
  3. Had VSG 4 years ago. SW 285. Got down to 215 within 4 months and never lost another pound. My weight would go down 3 lbs and up 2, then stall and restart. My surgeon acted like I was crazy when I talked to him about why I couldn’t lose consistently. Started regain 7 months post-op and now I’m back up to 250. My hunger never left, I was hungry day after surgery. I vomit still when I eat dense or dry foods and therefore sometimes avoid Proteins for carbs to avoid discomfort and vomiting. Acid reflux is awful too. I wish I had bypass instead as I’m nauseous and uncomfortable every day either hungry, heartburn or uncomfortable. Thoughts?

    Revision time

Technically the size of your stomach will be the same (if not smaller) as I understand that the revision from sleeve to bypass is just the re-routing of intestines. That said, *technically* you will have at least the same restriction, if not better. The difference is the pyloric valve. Since the bypass skips this part of the digestive tract, "slider foods" will essentially slide through with the by-pass. So, as long as you keep to dense foods first mantra, you *should* not see much difference in restriction. But like @catwoman7 said above, each person will get a different experience. Congrats on all the weight you've lost, btw...you look great in your profile pic! +1 on this as well. I gained 6 lbs over a couple months (feb-march) and it was not as easy to lose it as it was a year ago. While before it would take 1-2 weeks with little effort, this time around took about a month with dedicated effort. So I can only think that a year, two years, from now it will be even more difficult....

    Revision time

I'm not a revision patient, but just wanted to say that as long as you keep on top of taking your vitamins, deficiencies are pretty rare. There are some people whose bodies don't absorb oral iron well who have to get occasional iron infusions, but most of us absorb it just fine. Otherwise, I really don't hear about deficiencies except for people who don't keep on top of their vitamins. I don't think that lack-of-restriction thing is universal. It probably depends on the person.
  6. Hello everyone, I honestly never do this but I'm beyond desperate and need to see if anyone has in the past or is experiencing what I am. I had gastric sleeve done end of Oct of 2018 and on 2019 I had revision done to bypass. I have suffered from GERD since I was 16 and I am now 44. The reason I mention this is because I had revision done supposedly because my GERD was causing extreme burning sensations im my throat and mouth. Well here it is 7 months after my revision and the sensations and feelings I had are back again at full force and even worse. I honestly do not know of this is even GERD at this point anymore. I am going to try to explain exactly what it is I feel. It feels like my mouth and throat are literally burned and scalded like if you drank something to hot. I also smell a burning smell almost all the time. These feelings progress through my day and get worse and worse as I eat and drink throughout the day. I have noticed chewing gum helps especially the mint type and if I drink it subsides for a little bit but then gets even worse. This contradicts everything about GERD because GERD is supposed to get worse when you chew gum or at least that's what my GI said. Also even if I go to bed like this it doesn't wake me up like you would think with the burning. I know what heartburn feels like dealing with it I was 16 this isn't heartburn. I'm miserable all the time. I cry myself to sleep because no one can figure what is going on. I feel like no doctors understand or believe me. I honestly have no idea what to do at this point. I've tried googling my symptoms and cant seem to find anything. As much as I love the fact that I've lost all this weight I honestly regret it. I want to feel normal again. To not be suffering all day and trying to act like nothing is wrong when I'm in so much pain and discomfort. Please if anyone is experiencing this or has HELP I'm begging.
  7. Hi all, I was sleeved 8/9/17 and from the very start I had issues. The first night after surgery I didn't sleep and neither did the lady in the room with me because I coughed all night in a raised position. Little did I know that coughing was a sign of what was to come. GERD !!!! A few days after leaving the hospital I was awoken out of a dead sleep chocking on acid that burned my nose and throat. I was given 3 different PPI before I found one that gave me relief from that part of it. I have had burning for almost 3 years now and have erosive esophagitis Grade D. My revision date has been reset now for May 22 ( 3rd times a charm) I am not happy to be doing this as the sleeve has worked out pretty well for me, although I know it must be done. I am 5 lbs over my original goal weight of 180 after getting down in the 160s this past summer. I would like to lose 25 to 30 lbs and that is about it. I am scared of all the unknowns and after reading the post " I Hate the By pass " it made me think about all the restriction I will be losing. I am also worried about vitamin deficiencies. Anyone out there glad they had the revision ?

Don't get me wrong but how much weight loss did you expect during this time span? Revisions tend to lose slower. Yes, I can absolutely understand the need to get back down with the weight fast but this is not a matter of weeks as you already know. Expect at least as much time to lose the excess weight this time as you needed before. And tell these toxic family members of yours that your weight and diet is none of their business. Might need a bit of yelling but it's worth it.
  9. As far as intestines, constipation is far more common for bypass and sleeve patients than diarrhea is (diarrhea is more of an issue with DS patients) Not sure why weight loss is slower with revisions, but a lot of revision patients have mentioned it...

  11. Hi everyone, Im new here as this is my second post in 2 days. I have a question regarding GERD. Im 32 been pretty much overweight all my life and the small time (about 10 years ago) when i was in great shape, i did not suffer from gerd. I also have a small hiatal hernia that may or may not need to be repaired. I do not take medicine for the Gerd, it really doesn't bother me to be honest. I have been reading that preexisting GERD prior to the sleeve can worsen. So much so, that many times the surgeon will suggest a revision to the bypass. The bypass scares the life out of me and i just dont want to do it. No disrespect to bypass patients, But I rather not surgery than get a bypass Studies can only show you so much and Id really like to hear some of your first hand experiences. Did it get worse, Better, same? Also, did any of you get the LINX installed? If so, howd did that go?

I’m now 8 days post op from band revision to vsg. It’s been a major wake up call for me on the difference of recovery and wanting food. Just remember to drink fluids and it’s ok to be in pain I wasn’t expecting it to be like how it is . Good luck
  13. Having a bypass, revision, on 5/27 - just spoke to my surgeon via teleconference... finally moving forward. I didn't have any hair loss with the original surgery - sleeve, back in 2015. I had thinning but was on Biotin. Is the revision, bypass, worse for thinning/losing hair?
  14. For some reason, I would think you would have the opposite affect, out the other end since it's intestines. Why are revisions slower paced for weight loss, do you think? Just got off the phone w/ my surgeon - had a tele visit, hospitals opening up there, I won't be on a COVID floor, but COVID will be in the hospital somewhere.. I feel comfortable ... as I know they'll clean and take precautions, etc. plus my husband had a mild case of Covid about 7 weeks ago ..... so I've been exposed.. Just need to stay safe now and not get it to have surgery.
  15. You can definitely throw up after bypass! I wonder where people got the idea that you can't?? weight loss after revisions IS slow for most people how long ago was your revision? I'm surprised you're still having reflux. If it was recent, does your surgeon have you on a PPI? Most surgeons put people on them for the first 3-6 months (for revisions AND for virgin surgeries.

Yes everyone knows that a 2nd or 3rd surgery is totally different to a first surgery I'm glad I made the right choice and did months of research before choosing the BYPASS. Seen many people needing to be revised to bypass for many reasons over the years. My journey lasted about 8 months from when I began my pre-op diet to when I felt I was in maintenance and all I did was eat very little calories and carbs and was very strict on myself living off shakes predominantly for months and shed 154lbs and now BMI is 22.7 I feel great. I look great. And my metabolism is amazing.
  17. I have hypothyroid and have had sleeve surgery. Had to revise to bypass because of severe GERD. I have had much more success with the bypass although I did lose weight with the sleeve. If I had it to do all over again, I would go straight for bypass. Mostly because of the high rate of gerd among people that are sleeved. I also believe that the bypass is just a much better surgery as far as losing weight. It has been for me.
  18. My timing info will probably useful/of interest for anyone in Australia and who have a revision from ESG to sleeve. ESG is not covered by medicare or private health insurance in Australia so no real requirements other than some blood tests. Could have had my ESG within three or four weeks of my initial appointment with the doctor, however, I delayed the procedure for some leave that was already planned a few months away. 18 months later for my revision to sleeve I went out of state to a surgeon who had already done ESG conversions to sleeve (some will only do bypasses). I was fortunate, the office arranged for me to have an endoscope the day following my initial consult and from there it was less about one month to my sleeve. I had some bloods taken in between, Medicare/private health insurance covered this one but I did have out of pocket costs. There were no required to lose weight prior to the surgery or pysch clearances. There was one appt with the dietician (did that the same day as my initial consult) and two appointments following the surgery.

Don’t get me wrong you guys. My revision was done on March 9 and I’ve already lost 35 pounds so I’m happy, it’s just not what I was expecting . I had the perfect sleeve but the pregnancies forced my pouch to spread. The last pregnancy I was on complete bed rest for the entire thing. I guess I’m sad

My surgery revision from band to bypass was yesterday morning and I got home tonight about 5pm. I’m very sleepy and I will say there is good amount of pain on my left side which is controlled by medication. The biggest challenge I have this early is having a hard time getting comfortable and I have no interest in food. I’m forcing broth and jello. Last week I couldn’t imagine only eating broth and jello and today, I cant imagine being hungry ever. So weird. Even through the fog and pain, I have no regrets!

    Vitamins

hi - my nutritionist emailed me a new revised, pre and post bariatric plan... was unsure if it was different from my previous surgery. She has, per day - Vitamin - Bariatric Advantage with or without Iron, Celebrate Mutli with Iron - 18mg, 35, 45, and 60mg too - Bariatric Fusion - all one per day. Calcium Citrate and Vitamin D - Bariatric Advantage, Celebrate, Bariatric Fusion or ReViva Calcium Calcium is 1200-1500mg and vitamin D - 400-800IU unless deficient 2000IU Iron with Vitamin C - 250mg vitamin B12 - 350-500mg I'm going to make a list and order it so I have it when I return home from surgery. Has anyone had the above mentioned brands - I was thinking it doesn't really matter as long as the dosages are the same - etc... Like someone said, Walgreens or CVS generics are just fine. I'll compare everything before I order

  23. I’m in NY. they are opening slowly for electives as emergencies. My surgeon didn’t perform anything either... and he is only doing two day this month. I got lucky as I’m an emergency due to be revised and my hernia.

Right which is bypass. Do you think revision bypass is the same. Or is that not a thing? Revision just means another procedure?
  25. I am a 2012 gastric sleeve patient from Mexico. Since June, 2019, I have not been feeling well. Excessive heartburn that Omeprazole will not touch at all. In 2018, I had a hiatal hernia repair and found out in October, 2019 that I have another hiatal hernia and was told it cannot be repaired. I finally met with another surgeon and she discovered I have an angulation in my sleeve. I have noticed since I have started to become extremely sick that I have severe constipation, which I have never experienced with the sleeve. I am now drinking smooth move tea every night which has worked wonders for me, but now the past two mornings I am experiencing these very painful cramps and I am gassy all of the time. I noticed when I would not have BM's for days I would bloat up like a blow fish and would be in a lot of pain. I was told I will need a revision to bypass to repair the hernia and the angulation, but due to Covid it is slowing things up a bit. Plus, this new surgeon is making me see the nutritionist and the psychiatrist. I am hoping my insurance covers with no problem for revision since my BMI is only a 30 and they want a 35 with underlying issues. Surgeon said I cannot gain weight due to it will make it more difficult for her to do surgery on me. Anyone on here that has experienced this, what did you do for the constipation, stomach pain and regurgitation until you got relief? Some days the Omeprazole works and other days I am choking and thinking I am having a heart attack.
