  1. Giant salad: 360 calories. Am eating it now, yum!
  2. I think if you can do it, then mindful/intuitive eating is the best (and easiest) way to go. For me though, I'm just not mindful nor intuitive enough to be successful using this method. I'm a calorie counter and it works for me because if I don't keep track of what I'm eating and know where my calories are at, I will just forget what I ate earlier and likely take in more calories that what I need. But I do know that there are those who are not as "forgetful" as me and can to the intuitive/mindful eating with no issue. As with all things, try it out, and if it works for you, cool. If it doesn't, find something that does. Good Luck! ❤️
  3. I’m still in the preop phase before RNY, but at a recent support group I was told something I’ve been somewhat puzzled about. My program leader, at least over education, really promoted being mindful and eating by Portion Control not so much calories, etc. They do emphasize getting all the protein requirements and give guidelines, but were more concerned we learn portions than calorie counting or tracking for all the macros. This is a new concept to me and I’m wondering for those of you who’ve had surgery and been some years out what actually works best for the long haul? I’ve always learned or thought we would keep up our macros, calories, all that to the last dot everyday by way of a tracker or journal.

    Keeping up with liquids

I struggled for the first 2 months, I had so much nausea. It hasn't done me any harm in the long run and I can chug drinks now, hooray. I drank through the night too, @Arabesque Told me to do it too. Low calorie ice pops and warm drinks helped me through it- Oxo, Bovril [ also called beef tea ] and Ribena sugar free blackcurrant cordial are the English brand names I found helped me most. Tomato juice was a wonder drink that helped turn me around. It was 47 cals for 200mls and tasted great with hot sauce. Dont be afraid to try anything, good luck

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I’m still on puréed for two more weeks (surgery date was 3/22). Then I can move to soft foods for 3 weeks. I’m currently back in the hospital; Monday night I had an a-fib episode. I’ve never had a-fib issues before but they do not think it is WLS related. Because of my surgery, they put me back on a liquid diet while I am here because they don’t really have puréed foods that are heart healthy. I think I had a total of 183 calories yesterday and like 2 protein. I’m taking steps backwards instead of forwards. Ugh. I did manage to drink more water yesterday but I am still nowhere near my goal of 50 ounces (that’s where my nephrologist wants me). I think I was at 33 ounces. Hopefully I will be out of here tomorrow so I can get back on track!
  6. I love me some cauliflower crust too, it takes even more effort than the chicken crust to make, though. *le sigh* I just googled the hearts of palm spaghetti…similar in calories and (non) nutritional value as the shiratake noodles i use as pasta replacement. I may just give it a try as the shiratake noodles are ridiculously filling for me. Curious: whats the texture like? Is it soft like zucchini noodles?

There's nothing wrong with 1000 calories/day. The gherelin hormone from surgery was suppressed for the first little while, so you weren't hungry.

    Calories

I have been really hungry since right after my surgery. I talked to my surgery center and they put me on Metformin and Topamax. I've lost weight really well, but it's so frustrating to be hungry all the time. I find that drinking a lot, especially tea and coffee (I use splenda a low fat milk), helps. Being distracted, eating lots of fiber from veggies, and eating 5 times a day vs. 3 is what works for me. Good luck! PS - I'm eating about 900-1200 calorie a day now at 7 months out.
  9. Looks nice. I do cauliflower crust. Recently I found heart of palm "spaghetti" and "lasagna" sheets which are essentially just fibre and no other nutrition. I do a carbonara with the spaghetti which is excellent if I do say so myself. Also with konjac noodles which are also zero calorie.

    Calories

Hi guys, 2 months post op gastric sleeve and felt super hungry this week been having over 1000 calories a day when I was averaging between 700-900 before? any ideas?
  11. Fam had pizza last night which i didn’t eat any of (i only eat the homemade ones that Mr. makes….regular pizza is not yummy enough to be worth it for me!) Sooo this morning i spent a bunch of time making a chicken pizza crust for my own “pizza” cuz i had low key FOMO yesterday. Though honestly, im not sure the amount of time was worth the yeild. Maybe next time ill make a huge batch and freeze it. Anyhoo: here is my finished slice. The pancetta AND capers made it a little too salty so i picked those off, otherwise ate it all: 164 calories for the slice (16g protein and 6g NET carbs) …i still prefer Mr.’s pizzas.

    Pre Op high protein diet

My pre op diet was keto so high protein too but also high fat which I struggled with. No calorie limit though. Why are you focussing on mushy food? After surgery you only eat purées & then soft foods for about 4 weeks & believe me that’s too long! Ensuring you meet your protein goals will be life long thing so I say enjoy any & all proteins in all forms. The protein snacks I go to are cheese, high protein yoghurt, hummus, liverwurst or pate (with crudités or a couple of multi grain crackers), protein bar (be careful some have a lot of sugar or artificial sugars). Occasionally I’ll have nuts or roasted fava beans or chick peas. You can also nibble on some meat like some chicken (watch deli meats that are cured or fatty like ham, salamis, etc.) or a boiled egg. Hope you get a surgery date soon.
  13. I was thinking the same thing about rice as well. I enjoyed rice a lot too but don’t miss it at all. Same with bread & pasta. A waste of calories, nutritionally poor & very filling. Because they make you feel full more quickly you can’t eat the nutritionally dense food you need to be eating. The large, rich, creamy Starbucks drinks are likely filling you too much too quickly too limiting what you can eat later. A protein shake would be a better choice for nutrition & calories. I agree with @ms.sss & @SleeverSk. Eat your protein first, then your vegetables, then any highly processed carbs like rice. Instead of a sandwich, eat a salad or try a low carb high protein bread or wrap. Salads are great. You can throw in just about anything any protein (meat, seafood, legumes, cheese, etc.) fruit, cheese, nuts, seeds, etc. as well as vegetables & fruit. Have a look at the Food before & after thread for ideas on meals & ingredients too. Taking an hour to eat a chicken thigh & a cup of rice is pretty much how long I would take to eat a chicken thigh & a cup of vegetables. Are you tracking your food & nutrients? How many calories are you consuming each day? Have you had any blood tests recently? What advice is your surgeon & dietician giving you? If they’re not, start demanding help. Out of curiosity, you had surgery at a low BMI (about 29), what was your motivation for pursuing surgery? History of weight issues, co morbidities, …?
  14. I was the same weight for MONTHS (185pounds)… at about a year out I figured “okay, this is it. I’m stable and maintaining now”. Recently they have me increasing my calories (I’ve managed to get up to 1500 calories a day which has been a difficult transition because I tend to eat foods that are lower in calories ) and then I dropped a Lot of pounds very quickly. I am now 174 (I hadn’t weighed myself in a while because I always hovered around 185) . My nutritionist about had a fit and wants me to do more regular check ins now. (Insert eye roll here). I just got Invisalign too so my tendency to snack (which is how I upped my calories) is now nonexistent because getting these Invisalign trays off are like wrestling a rabid animal 😅 anyways…. I know a lot of people have broken stalls by temporarily increasing their caloric intake. 🤷🏼‍♀️ You could increase your calories and see if that jump starts weight loss again

    Food Before and After Photos

Today though… the majority of my calories have been from sampling half a dozen iced caramel macchiatos… ya know, for science! Ok, mostly to see which one is the best. They’re all a “large” and vary in ounces pretty significantly. And contrary to the amounts drunk, the one with the coffee mug on it (a local coffee place) and the one from Dunkin are my favorites. Timmy’s was disappointing as it weirdly tasted of burnt maple syrup and the one from Winan’s (a chocolates and coffee shop) tasted like chocolate. Starbucks lacked any real caramel flavor and McDonald’s was a caramel overload. Left to right top picture- Dunkin, Starbucks, McDonald’s, local place, Winan’s, and Timmy’s. Also, it’s now dinner time and I’m not hungry and need a nap.
  16. Rice. This is likely the main contribution to your inability to eat alot and gain weight. Rice is notoriously filling for the majority of us, with low nutritional value. One cup is only 200 cals so if the majority of your diet is (less than) 1 cup of rice and a chicken thigh (and assuming you attempt this 3 times a day) your cals are pretty low by end of the day….resulting in further weight loss. Maybe cut down a bit on the rice and replace with with a fattier meat? Or some avocado? You can also pour a nice high-calories sauce over it all, like a pesto or herb infused olive oil, or a nice peanut satay, etc. P.S. Rice was a daily staple for me too pre-op…now i only have rice when i eat sushi.
  17. Sometimes I eat chips. 40g, 208 calories. Ate it all.

Finally a date-ques. about preop diet.

Pre-op diets vary WIDELY from surgeon to surgeon and there is pretty limited research on efficacy from one plan to another. The primary goal is to shrink your liver to allow for as mush operating space as possible. Liver shrinkage is achieved by a reduced calorie, low carb diet (this reduces glycogen). The main thing is to just be compliant with whatever your surgeon recommends to give yourself the best outcome possible!

Stall or I am done loosing?

You could stay at the same weight for months and then drop more weight, from what I've read and heard from others. Shift work does make it really hard to lose weight, so congrats on losing as much as you have! The only thing you can do is really focus on what you're eating and drinking - keep track of your calories from food and drinks. I've heard from many people that even years out they still have restriction if they focus on lean protein.

    Pre Op high protein diet

I lost 50 lbs prior to surgery. I ate lower carb, higher protein, and counted calories - about 1700 a day. I did throw a few food funerals towards the end! You don't need to eat mushy foods prior to surgery. You will have enough of that in the weeks after surgery. Giving up sweets is really hard. I am 6 months post surgery and I find I eat some sweets - more than I need now. Sweets like cake are "slider foods" meaning you can still eat them when you are full on protein. It's the bane of my existence when I eat with my family on vacation. I try to just have a few bites of a dessert, not the whole thing, and I try not to have dessert every day we're out. I also try to keep the rest of my day high protein/low carb. It's not about perfection; just 80-90% of the time making the right choices.

    Pre Op high protein diet

I was just supposed to eat healthy (which honestly, I already did) and keep my calorie intake at around 2300 (which clearly, at well over 300 lbs, I didn't). The dietitian didn't restrict any specific kind of food, but on the other hand, eating more than the occasional sweet treat wouldn't really be healthy eating. I lost about 40 lbs during the six-month pre-op diet (required by my insurance company) and another 17 lbs during the two-week liquid diet (required by my surgeon).

    Pre Op high protein diet

My dietician put me on a 1,300 calorie diet with 45% carbs, 30% protein and 25% fat. I only had to lose 5 pounds to get a surgery date. Honestly, I ate what I wanted as an evening snack every other night. My healthy snacks were Greek yogurt with fruit, low fat cookies with green tea, or one piece of string cheese with almonds (counted out). I wasn’t ready to sacrifice ALL of my favorite foods. I viewed the diet as a sort of “practice” for eating healthy, tracking my food and drinking more water. You will give up everything and lose a significant amount of weight when you do the two week liquid diet before surgery (which I am doing right now). Maybe you should ask your dietician if you’re supposed to follow the diet 24/7.
  23. Hi all! I still do not know which surgery I am getting as of yet, as my first dietician appt was last week. She has me on a protein first diet... about 1500 calories a day etc to start getting used to the way I will be eating post surgery. No date yet for surgery,. btw. Assuming June or July. How many of you had to do this and what did you find eating works good for you? Ive been watching a lot of Youtube videos on what they ate before and after. Im doing a lot of mushy high protein foods already. Refried beans with sour cream, soups, tons of eggs, etc. But for snacking I was told to always eat protein first!! Im only a week in and I have not had 1 sweet yet! The most sugar I had, was a thing of cottage cheese last night with a teeny bit of strawberry topping and an apple with cinnamon sugar. That is it. I crave sweets so much. This is so hard. What worked for you guys in the sweets department pre op?? Did you still lose before your surgery?? I dont NEED to lose before surgery. ,but they dont want me to gain either. My dietician told me eat sweets in moderation, and obviously I know that... but if its eat protein first, where do I fit in a slice of cake once in awhile?? LOL Can any of you give me some good food/snack ideas/ plans that worked for you pre op?? As Im writing this, my snack tonight is a cup of vegetable beef soup that is high in protein.... Is that bad?? lol Pinterest has been a help too.
  24. The weight loss for revision varies a lot, but in general is significantly less than with your initial surgery. If you're doing it for GERD, it makes sense, but for weight loss, it makes more sense to look at other weight loss strategies like medications and counting calories/behavior change

Pre Op Liquid Diet starts tomorrow

It gets easier. After a few days your body adapts to fewer calories. My first pre op diet was the most difficult, the second one was easier. I'll let you know how the third goes in a few weeks, lol.
