  1. Ok so I went online and ordered from MyBariatricPantry.com I bought their sample pack and the drinks are pretty good, for protein drinks that is. However, are the protein drinks supposed to be mostly clear and very thin??? I know its a liquid diet I was just wondering because the other protein shakes I have are much thicker. Am I doing this right?

    Putting off the surgery...

I think I only tried 49 diets, not 50, but don't quote me on that.... Wssmith, I know you are a bit ambivilant about the surgery right now, so I think this would be a good idea. It will give you more time to explore all your options. I know there are lots of folks that think WLS is only for the Super MO, and that simply MO or Obese shouldn't take such drastic steps. Part of me thinks that folks with a BMI of 32 shouldn't get it, but part of me knows that it isn't for me to even make that judgement. One person's BMI of 32 is just fine while just gross for someone else. Please hang about here, not so much to change your mind or cement your choice, but because you have a lot to offer here. Cheers!

    The Decision: Gastric Plication

I am a 44 yo registered nurse who is a Director of Quality in a small hospital in NWO. I have researched all my options. Orginally I wanted the VSG but now I really feel that the gastric plication is the tool I need to increase my chance of losing weight and keeping it off. I like that it is revisable and is not associated with malabsorption . I made my decision after two years of lurking on weight loss sites and trying various diets, personal training and pills. I would lose 15 and gain 20. I have watched my ability to snorkel and walk on vacation turn into shortness of breath and fatigue. I walk up the stairs to beat of 132 pulse. This has improved with cardio at the gym (120's ) I have beat myself up. Refused to go out with my husbands friends because they are thin and I am embarassed for my husband. Really I have spent my time making other people happy and not myself necessarily. Weight loss will not make me beautiful ( It is what is inside that counts). It will not make me successful as I feel that I am succesful professionally regardless of my weight. Weight loss will increase my energy and my overall health. My fears are complications related to the surgery. I am having my consultation appointment by phone with Dr. Brad Watkins from Cincinnati Weight Loss on Sept 7, 2011. I am 5 ft 3 inches and 216.5 today. This is a 38.4 BMI . So far I dont have high blood pressure or diabetes. I dont want them either. I will keep you posted:)

    New Beginning--AGAIN!

11/30/09: I am starting a new diet plan AGAIN! I hope this works. I have a schedule set up that works with my work schedule where I work full time. I figured on my two 15 min breaks that I have during the day, that I can drink protein on each one and get on here to keep me busy--and the big one--EXERCISE again! This is what got me to lose weight real good the first time....I figured a controlled eating habbit, more protein and exercise and then go get a fill and I should be on the road again to weight loss. We will see! I go 12/7/09 to have a fill, I think this will be my third one, but I have no restriction for now. I also, have an appt with my psychitrist 12/3/09--need to get my depression and bad self esteem in control! I weighed myself today and I weigh 267.6 ---so I have 67 pounds to go--i would like to get down to 185--but I just to hit 199 or 200 would be GREAT!! I am in 24 pants now and if I get to 235 then I can fit in an 18--so lets uset hat goal first! So, I need to lose 32 pounds then go from there! To lose 8 pounds a month would be great for me! Okay, lets start this new journey and see what happens...I CAN DO IT!:cursing:

Question for those on effexor or wellbutrin

I was on Wellbutrin XL once a day (I think it was 300 mg.) and they told me that I couldn't take that one cuz it was t oo big. So instead they prescribed me 2 150 mg. tablets, which are a lot smaller and are still time released. I take them both one after the other in the morning, but I can get them down because they are smaller. That might be an option. I was told not to crush them because of the time-release issue. Emily

    The road thus far...

<Insert "carry on my wayward son...they'll be peace when you are done"..Points to the SPN fandom> Today marks 3 months and 1 week since I had VGS in Mexico. I'm still learning to use this site so I never knew there was a blog option till now. I've been fairly quite on my other social media feeds about my surgery for a multitude of personal reasons. But here feels safer, and well, none of my family/friends/acquaintances are here so... I've spent the majority of my life being a yo-yo dieter. While I have always loved my body just as it was, yes, even when I was morbidly obese (it's strange to say "was"), I was never that healthy chubby chick. I've been on BP meds since I was 30yrs old, battle my cholesterol & have a history of heart disease on both sides of the family. My dad had his first heart attack at 40 and I was 38 when I had the surgery. I still question myself every day if I did the right thing. I'm 30+ lbs down in 3 months, my blood pressure is in normal ranges for the first time in years and my dr is thrilled with my progress. But the negative committee that meets in my head tells me "this isn't going to work...just like everything else" and "you'll just gain it all back because that's what you do" and the worst "Why did you spend so much money on yourself you selfish pig." Yeah...they're a real piece of work, that committee. We'll be paying off my surgery for years. Was it worth it? i hope so. My partner tells me it was to him...and he likes to remind me that it's cheaper than the cost of a funeral. Morbid, yes, but it makes sense. My brain still cant accept it..I'm down 30lbs, 4 pants sizes, Lots of inches and still I don't "see" it. I can see it some days in what I wear...in my rings being looser...in the way I can do little things like cross my legs where I couldn't before. But it's like there is a disconnect with my brain in accepting all of this as truth or as real and definitely as sustainable. Every time the scale goes up, even when it's a fraction of a lb, I think "this is it..this is where this stops and I gain it all back". Every time I "fail" and give in to temptation and eat something that isn't 100% on diet, I think "this is where I give up and revert to bad habits" (though admittedly, I eat pretty well most of the time, even before surgery). Every time I'm too tired to get on the elliptical I think "You wasted all that money for this?" Maybe it will change. I keep trying. I keep going.

What is/was your post op diet?

We bought the second book! The first one was just recommended during my last bariatric surgery support group. I need to get it. I find I'm eating way too many of the same things and need to change it up a bit. Right now I'm probably eating about 600 calories. My nutritionist said as long as long as I'm getting enough Protein and fluids in, I'm okay, but I am worried, at 8 weeks out, I should be having a little more. My book from Mayo Clinic indications around 800 this stage, working my way up to 1000-1200 by the time I hit 3-4 months. I think as I add more solid foods (I got the okay to add very small amounts of starches, if I can get them down, during this stage), that will increase. I tried a Triscuit last night and it went down okay. Woo!

3 1/2 weeks out and LIFE IS GREAT!

I don't know if you guys like the taste but low-fat buttermilk is delicious to me. It has 16 g of Protein for 2 cups.. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G925A using the BariatricPal App
  9. Hi All. So I'm 2.5 weeks post OP and I'm finding this new stomach of mine difficult to navigate to say the least. I drank a protein shake clearly WAY to fast and now I feel horrible (bloated and a little nauseous). Did I stretch my stomach and do damage? I'm very anxious of that happening. Any wisdom you all have would be greatly appreciated!
  10. I was looking into financing options as well. My credit is good except I have too much credit out so I am a risk. If your hospital accepts it, CareCredit is LapBands "choice" for financing. My boyfriend cosigned for me and we were approved for $16,000 (thats what I applied for) even with the tough economy. If you try a personal loan or credit card it will be hard because of the economy and the limits probably wont be very high.

    Protein help

I am guessing you just had surgery within the last couple of weeks. The reality is you simply cannot get it all in until the swelling goes down. You just do the best you can. The good news is, your body has stores of these nutritional elements so if you are not meeting your Protein goals the first several weeks it is no big deal. The most important thing is keeping your fluids up and it sounds like you are doing that, then just do what you can with the rest of your liquids. This is the priority: 1. Water/liquids - 48 to 64 oz will keep you hydrated 2. Protein - minimum of 1 gram for every inch you are tall (it will take a few weeks to begin to meet this daily) 3. Vitamins - these too can come a few weeks later, you have stores in your body 4. Exercise - work your way up by starting with walking until you are cleared You are already doing great with liquids, now just start sipping that protein. By the way, it is best icy cold. Good luck!
  12. I was sleeved 12 days ago and the number on the scale hasn't moved in two days. I had an appointment on Thursday and I was assured that I was right on track and doing everything correctly. They did say that non-clear liquids must continue for 2 weeks, instead of the one that was in the paperwork they gave me pre-op. Exercise is going great, but I have had a little bit of insomnia the last few nights. I feel lighter and more energetic, but at the same time I feel that the protein shakes aren't satiating me. I bought some of the soups they said were okay for this phase but honestly I don't like eating them because they're so high in carbs and sodium. So its water, Powerade Zero, protein shakes, a cup of coffee here and there, and more water, protein shakes and Powerade Zero until 2/3/14. I don't feel hungry like ready to go binge on something crazy, but I have to say this limited menu is starting to feel a little bland and even after I eat I feel my stomach growling. I've wondered if its possible that I'm not eating enough and my body thinks I'm starving. I think I am going to stop weighing myself so often because its just making me mad. Despite the weight I have lost I'm still having to wear my pre-op clothes sizes...and that's irritating too. I knew that occasional stalls were part of this, but I didn't expect this so soon! If the scale didn't move and I could fit into at least one pant size smaller I think that would help to ease this frustration...but oh well. Nothing I can do but keep on keeping on, do what I'm supposed to do and hope for the best. Thanks for posting this topic!
  13. If I'm drinking protein shakes do they count as fluid intake as well? I'm so happy to know I'm not the only one going threw this, we can all vent our frustrations together.

    New UK Pre Op

Hi, I was originally interested in the sleeve but thought better of it after my initial consultation and after looking around on the forums am glad I have changed my mind it seems a much better option. Did you have a band for long and did it work for you at all. I'm currently 273 pounds and 5' 3" and have tried every diet going I lost tons of weight a few years ago and gradually put it all back on again as usual. Good luck with your operation and let us know how you get on.

  16. I am sorry these things have happened to you. have you had a cat scan to diagnose your diverticulitis? Thats usually the only way of knowing for sure, its brought on by eating nuts and seeds as well as low fiber have you been eating that if so calm it down. do you know it can be taken care of usually with one round of Cipro which is an antibiotic. Millions of people have it sleeved or not. also maybe try quest bars loaded with protein 4 usable carbs and 17 grams of fiber. As for hairloss yes mine is flying out too, but you had to know this goin in, they do say it does grow back If mine gets out of control, I plan to see a dermatologist for inections to stop it. I researched and knew exactly what i was in for before surery, there are no surprises here except weightloss and yes im still heavy but im a different person now. im tall ive always hid my weight well and still do. Im a better mother better lover better person with just 68 lbs gone. I cant wait to see what the future holds.

    Mushy Foods.........

Here's another one I just found out about: A little spaghetti sauce, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese and some mozarella cheese. Microwave and it supposed to taste just like lasagna sans pasta. Faux Lasagna!! I will try that one tomorrow. I Just had about an ounce of monterrey jack cheese and a ritz cracker..........chewed up real mushy. tiny little bites. Took me about 20 min to eat it and I feel full. I still have to drink one or two protein drinks a day to get enough protein in. What kind of vitamins are you all taking. I'm not taking any. Maybe that's why I get these charlie horses in my calves and toes. LOL Becki
  18. I have had some really great and filling protein foods. Keeping me more full. I did cook these myself so I could control the ingredients. I made meatballs and sauce. If you add 1/2 cup of water the meatballs come out very moist. Easy to smash, very filling. I also made a turkey burger. I coated the pan with pam and a little grape seed oil. If it starts to stick you can add a little chicken broth. When it was done I put some terriaki on it and again easy to smash and filling.
  19. Hi Marion, I can see your house from here!!! Google is soooo neat. I ordered a lot of Protein powders on line last night. I looked at a few places yesturday and they just didn't have much variety. I have enough stuff to hold me until my deliveries. Yesturday we broke a heat record from 1888 with a temp of 96 F = 36 C. I almost fainted. We never get those temps here in New England. This morning it dropped to 55 F = 13 C. (I found a conversion site) Yaa! Us Yanks and Aussies speak the same language but, diverged with Money, Measurement, Area, Temperatures and Weights. We have a 3 day holiday this weekend. It's our Memorial Day we celibrate our lost service men and women with parades, barbies with friends and family. It's kind of the unofficial opening of Summer:cool2:!!
  20. I had lap band 3/27 and I'm starving but I'm sticking to mushies and protein shake wich I couldnt drink in the first week the smell of the shake killed me. Not sure if any one else has had a problem with the tast of the whey Protein I went through 3 different and the best one is Jay Robb's dosent even tast like a protein shake its very good and i ad 1/2 bananna to it .
  21. Nope. No change. I just keep very controlled in terms of intake... liquid, protein, veggies. I can't trust my head with simple carbs... ONE is both not quite enough and far too much as well...
  22. I was one of the lucky ones. I did not have gas pains. My surgery was 12:30 so was late afternoon before I was back in my room and I wanted to sleep. I had very little pain. I think that was because of left over meds from spinal. The second day the only pain I had was lifting my left leg up when getting back into bed. The good thing is since the surgery is laproscopic there are only 5 very small incisions maybe 1 inch ea. That makes it allot easier for moving around. I felt kinda tired and drug out but other than that from the the second day on I was OK. Moved kinda slow but no pain. It is pretty easy actually. I was surprised. I agree with VA, I thought I would be able to tell that most of my stomach was gone but can't tell any difference. Guess is kinda like my gallbladder or my appendex. I can't tell they are gone either. I'm so glad I did the sleeve surgery and I know you will be too. The 1st month is a challenge and then the transition to regular foods is hard. I wanted to go back to my comfort zone of mushies but I also wanted "real" food. It took about a week to be able to get my mind into solid Proteins. It is so worth it. Good luck with your "adventure" into a new life. carol
  23. Hey all, So today I had a small scary episode I'm two weeks in on my surgery, on Friday I was told to start puree foods, as every morning I wake up and have my protein shake, and sip water throughout the day at about 12pm I had some pureed Calabasas (pumpkin) lightly season with sea salt and a hint of cayanne pepper. I waited about 1 hour an half so I can't take omeprazol, once I had it Lord I thought I was going to die, I got light headed, chills and stomach cramps, as if I need to use the bathroom but nothing! Two minutes later I start gagging and I was throwing up an acid sour throw up ( my guess the pill) I guess the force of having throw up I felt all my stomach muscles cramp up! It was horrible!! Is this normal? My LPN told me I should continue pill for the next 3 months? But this was before this episode! Who has experienced this? Please any feedback is greatly appreciated! Last question how long after surgery did those belly sleepers start to sleep on your tummy's, without any discomfort?

    Wine and Celebrations

I am in the process for getting my surgery date and I get to meet with my surgeon for my first consultation in a few weeks. I've been researching lap bands now for about a month and I am pretty comfortable with the idea and lifestyle it will lead to. I've tried liquid diets before and I've done insane 21 day all veggie and just whey protein cleanse. I know how to restrict - I really should have a PhD in diet and exercise by now with all the facts that I know. I just keep gaining things back because I love to eat a LOT. My question is - What do I have to permanently give up, food wise? Besides eating low calorie/low fat (which is something we should all do anyway, right?), are there permanent restrictions on certain foods? I love to go wine tasting with my husband a few times a year. Can I do this on lap band? I also love to travel and it is hard to imagine not being able to try things abroad. Granted, I've come to the realization that I'm not happy having all the food that I want in the world right now, so why should I be worried that eliminating things will make me more unhappy. I just want to prepare myself for what I'm getting into with my future cuisine options. Thanks for all the advice in advance!

    Other Options?

Ifluty - Do you know someone that has had lapband surgery and their company insurance paid for it? If so, try to get a job at that company. Even if you have to take a pay cut, in the long run you'll be ahead rather than putting yourself in debt to have the surgery. Another option is take a loan out on your 401K. Interest rate is very low, you're very young, so you still have time to make up for it. But if you do that - find a bariatric doctor in your area that does a package deal where everything is included in one price. I'm a self pay because my company has a total exclusion with our insurance company for bariatric surgery. My doc does a package deal that includes surgery, hosptial, anesthesiologist, dietician and 1 year of fills for $15K. I took part out of my 401K and then also took a loan. I'll have the loan part paid back within 12 months. The 401K is no big deal for me because it wasn't that big anyway. It's my husband's 401K that we'll be counting on during retirement in about 5 years. I agree with what someone said in a prior response. DON'T put yourself in debt to have the surgery. Best of luck to you. I know how frustrating it is.
