August 2023 Surgery Buddies!
Melody57 replied to kayhay0714's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Most of my questions are on food. For pre-op I’m allowed one meal of 4 oz of protein and 1/2 cup of veggies. So right now I’m not sure if I can use a sugar free salad dressing as part of that or is it ok since it’s barely any calories and no sugar. I can email them so that helps. -

I am getting more nervous. I am on my second day of pre-op liquid diet and Today I realized that I will not be able to eat bad food for a long time. Just weird. Like fried food, bread and ect. Just a big adjustment that I am ready to make!!! I need this for me and my family! Food has always been center of my life and I dont want it to be. -
Hydration is a full time job!
DandelionSun replied to DandelionSun's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It is hard to balance the water/food ratio! As we go from liquids to solids we have to adapt. When the nutritionist told me to get 800 calories a day I was like, “where am I going to put it?” I feel most comfortable around 600 calories and 50oz of water, but she said I have to get the calories up in order to keep my metabolism going! It’s definitely a balancing act and we have to listen to our bodies! -

Is 8oz / 220gm food too much? 5 years post op
CarmenG replied to molliemaggot's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This past Monday, my PA told me I should probably be consuming 1,000 calories a day. Ta loco! (He's crazy). I reminded him I'm only 35 days out of surgery. I said I was consuming about 600 cals a day now, 60g protein, and 41 carbs (because 21 of my carbs and 60 calories come from my chewable vitamins and fiber supplements). He said I should up my cals. I told him, I'd up them to 700, but that was it. I'm not saying the kid doesn't know his stuff, but this isn't my first bariatric surgery. We know our bodies better than our docs, PAs, and nutritionists. Unfortunately, we know our bodies because we learn through trial and error. That's how we figure out when too much it TOO MUCH, or what foods our particular stomachs will reject or be fine with. "Since grams can be used to measure both solid and liquid ingredients, both types of ingredients can also be measured in a cup. However, while liquid ingredients are always the same weight in grams, solid and dry ingredients are not. Remember that grams are a measurement of weight or mass." Solid food is more dense than liquid. You'll need less solid to fill you up. Liquids will go though faster and easier. Listen to your tummy. Grams only measure the weight of something, not how bulky or dense it is. Also, everyone's tolerance, hunger, and nutritional needs will vary from person to person. The medical teams can give us guidelines, but even if they've personally had bariatric surgery themselves, ever body is different. I don't think that 1 cup of food is too much at 5 years out. However, only your stomach can decide that. -
Is 8oz / 220gm food too much? 5 years post op
LindsayT replied to molliemaggot's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This may be a program and/or person specific. My program, for example, says no more than 8 oz of food at a time for life. At almost 3 months, I can take in about 4-6 oz at a time; depending on what it is. -
Hi there, I was sleeved June 19 and I had this!! I had 2 ER visits and was re admitted to hospital. I referred myself to a gastroenterologist in the end. That is what you need. My pain was only at night too! Here is my long story and I hope it helps you. Please know I am feeling better now. You’ve had complications but there is hope. Here is what I posted last night in another thread. Hi everyone! I was sleeved on 19/6 (Australian date format lol). My experience was no smooth sailing and I developed severe complications despite seeing the best surgeon at the best hospital. I’ve felt really scared, alone and isolated so I am delighted to find this forum. my weight was only 92 pre op and I guess I was considered a healthy young woman. 5 days post op I developed a severe burning pain deep inside my stomach. After numerous emergency visits and tests, it was determine I did not have a gastric leak. I had to be re admitted to hospital to manage the most severe pain of my life, for another 5 days and they still didn’t know what was wrong. Long story short, I had to self refer myself to a gastroenterologist who immediately knew what was wrong. I had developed bile reflux from my bowel into my freshly cut stomach which was causing the searing pain, severe inflammatory gastritis of my stomach lining, which then caused pancreatitis and severe spasms of my actual stomach. Because of all of this I could not even get Water down and my throat was burning and mouth dried up from bile damage. He put me on a bunch of new intense meds and nearly 6 weeks post op now I am starting to feel normal. It’s been a really scary rough ride and emotional and I haven’t known if I’ve made the right decision. I can eat about 1/4 cup soft foods now which I am grateful for. Anyway I wanted to share my story in case you ever come across someone with these symptoms and doctors don’t believe them / don’t know what is wrong.

Food Aversions After Surgery
maintenanceman replied to MasonMoonGirl's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I can more or less tolerate anything now, but there are a surprising number of things I don't want anymore. I lived on fast food pre-op. Now, I have zero interest in burgers, fries, and such. I might have the occasional pastry item, but it is very easy for me to go to a bakery and not get anything or see a plate of cookies and not grab one. Unheard of pre-op! On the flip side, I never was really keen on ice cream pre-op. Now, I love it. It's one of the few sweets that goes down easily. -
Not Allowed To Gain Weight

Don't be jealous. My food funeral was super disappointing. The stuff we're saying goodbye to is mostly garbage. Once you're in maintenance, you'll be able to eat most anything you want in moderation... but you likely won't be as interested as you think you might be. -
Is 8oz / 220gm food too much? 5 years post op
molliemaggot posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi everyone, there's so much conflicting information on the amount to be eating per meal. I am 5 years post op and I believe was severely under eating for a long time. Is 220 gm per meal / 8oz too much food to be eating, as in 1 cup? Some people say one cup is 128gm and I am just lost. -
Not Allowed To Gain Weight
New To This23 replied to ChunkCat's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Same for me too, different insurance though. I also had to lose 5% of my starting weight in six months. I really struggled with it. In the past I had been able to lose more than that within 3 months, but this time I had had to see a registered dietician as part of the program. I ate what she told me to eat and I also was required to exercise a minimum of 5 days a week. It took me 5 months to lose the 5%. I went to my final weigh-in at the 6-month mark and I was 1lb OVER the 5% goal. This meant I was not allowed to meet with the surgeon or do the testing the surgeon requires before the surgery. I had to call my insurance and explain to them what happened. They allowed me to have a weigh-in 4 days later. At this weigh-in, I was 8lbs BELOW the goal weight. I have since seen the surgeon, and had all of my testing done. I am not allowed to be over the goal weight at all. It is really hard trying to maintain this while I wait to get a surgery date ( If I am over the goal weight on the surgery day, then the surgery will be canceled) and it has added a lot of unnecessary stress. I constantly weigh myself several times a day, and I am super paranoid about eating. No food funerals for me and I am envious of everyone who gets to do one. If my surgery gets canceled for being 1lb over, which I was told it would be, then I will call my insurance again. -
Depressed before surgery
maintenanceman replied to MasonMoonGirl's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
One of the best things about WLS is that it releases you from the hold food has over you. I know it's hard to imagine now, but food becomes so much less important. It's weird. You find yourself eating less than most everyone around you... and not really wanting more. At times, other people seem positively gluttonous. I'm 16 months post-op. I get hungry, but it's a controlled hunger that's based primarily on what my body needs, not social cues. I just don't have a taste for garbage food anymore, and I don't equate eating with having a good time. It's very liberating. How you feel pre-op isn't a good indicator of how you will feel post-op. Trust the process. Soon you will be on the loser's bench and sharing your stories with others. -
Yeah that sounds like a better idea since I’ve already gone the day and a half on strictly liquids but you’re suggestion sounds like a good way to keep going and not be as hungry for food in general when it comes the strictly liquid prior to my surgery! Thank you 😊
-
Since you’ve started maybe just keep to one or two shakes a day & have a meal of portion & calorie controlled protein & vegetables/salads for the other meal/s. You’ve started to break some of your sugar & carb dependencies & it seems a waste to throw that away. A two week pre surgery diet is pretty common though some are only on a one or two diet. They can take the form of an all liquid (protein shakes) or two protein shakes & one meal of protein & vegetables or a specific diet of solid food (I was on keto). Just depends on your surgeon. Mine gives different patients different diets depending on several factors including starting weight, weight loss/gain history & medical status. All the best what ever you choose to do.

That’s always an interesting question @Nomorecookies. I always tried to eat (drink) a lot of the excess liquids first then eat the solids. Same with soup. (Actually still sort of do this but I think it is a habit now.) But I also look at it as the milk & the liquid stock in a chunky soup actually are a food too, containing protein & nutrients. I also took ages to eat cereal & soup in the first several months (may be a year 🤷🏻♀️) so it was a way of giving the liquids a little time to pass through my digestive system before starting on the solid components. But check with your team to see what they say.

July 2023 buddies

I had surgery the 18th. So far all is good. I’m eating purée food. Look forward to having solids. The only thing is my incisions are itchy 😁😁. Trying not to scratch. 😁😁. -
If your doc said you don't have to be on the liquid diet yet, I'd say why subject yourself to it prematurely? It's hard enough after the surgery when your tummy is calling all the shots, but the mental game of doing it before surgery sounds like torture. My preop diet was way less brutal and allowed for actual food until the night before surgery.

I don’t believe I’m allowed to eat any solid foods. I planned on calling my surgeon to validate that I’m supposed to be on a full liquid diet. And yes! I did 3 shakes yesterday (breakfast, lunch, dinner) with 2 jello cups for a snack in between and a popsicle if I just need to chew something. It’s day 2 and so far I feel less irritated than I did yesterday lol so we are moving along okay! I do however feel a bit nauseous which I’m sure is normal

What about cereal and milk? Is that considered food and liquid together?

Post op hunger
LibrarianErin replied to Gastric2023!'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Shortly after I woke up from anesthesia, I told the nurse I had hunger pains and she said it was actually gas pain. I've felt it on and off since then, throughout my liquid diet and now in the puree stage. Walking around can help. But, yeah, I've heard that whole no longer feeling hungry thing isn't true for everyone. I hope yours is just gas pain and you'll be one of the lucky ones who stops feeling hunger once you're healed! -

That seems about right. The cream.of wheat and mashed potatoes need to be thinned out with liquid to a consistency that it will easily pour off the spoon... basically watered, well, milked, down. Think thick soup or stew broth. You mentioned not doing the baby food meat....I don't blame you. Just make sure you're getting enough protein though supplements and approved foods. I felt like I was eating or drinking every waking moment my first 4-6 weeks.

November Surgery Buddies!!!
gmast99 replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am very happy to hear you are looking forward to your vacation. I am the same as you. I have zero regrets about the surgery. I have settled in around 195. My goal was 185. I am aware that I could try harder to hit the goal weight but I am perfectly happy with 195 and eating and drinking what I want. I do not think the 10 pounds is worth giving up wine and pasta. Granted much smaller amounts of wine and pasta these days but I still feel human when I go out to dinner with my friends and family. At this point, no one even believes me when I said I had surgery. People don’t notice that I eat smaller portions because I am eating the same foods as them. I have way more energy and way more confidence. I am thankful I did not have complications. I have rarely even gotten sick. So for me I am living my best life after a successful surgery. (It should be noted I followed the MDs instructions to the letter for the first year.) -
