April 2022 Surgery Buddies
tkkilen replied to Crinkles's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello everyone I am new here. I found this site and found it very helpful during this process. I got gastric bypass on 4/18. I was so scared before the surgery. Now I wish I had this done many years ago. I would say problems I had were constipation ( no bowel movement for 11 days. I always had constipation but this was extreme. I am on linzess and now lactulose solution 10 ml 3x daily. I also had problems consuming enough protein liquid. I got 2 flavors of isopure. Yuck… I hate it! I forced myself to drink at least 1 bottle per day. Now I am on purée food. I am still trying to figure out what to purée and not. I am not much of a cook so this part is very hard for me. So far puréed cod fish, yam, green beans. Cottage cheese, triple zero yogurt, premiers protein shake….( also yuck! ) I miss my Korean food! I have only lost 10 lbs. pre liquid I lost 13 lbs in 5 days. I am confused why I am not losing any weight at this point hopefully someone can give me some feedback. Thank you everyone for your posts and I am glad to be here. -
Post-op tips/necessities
IWant ToDelete MyProfile posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m learning a lot from reading others posts and also learning that sometimes doctors don’t 100% prepare us for our return home I’m thinking it’s because they don’t know first hand what it’s like to recover from WLS? I dunno, whatever the reason it’d be nice to have this post to refer to when I’m post-op (I’m getting roux en y gastric bypass) So, give me all your best tips for recovery and necessities. What did you need and wish you had readily available? Thanks in advance!!! -
Constipation after gastric sleeve surgery
catwoman7 replied to Happy Stylist's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
very common with both sleeve and bypass. And just as a heads up, chronic constipation (even after the first BM) is pretty common, too. the first BM can take up to a week and can be a real doozy, so we were advised to take stool softeners. after that one, a lot of us take a capful of Miralax every day to stay on top of constipation - although others take stool softeners, probiotics, SmoothMove tea, or magnesium tablets. Whatever works... -
I had my mini gastric bypass on April 26th and I’ve had non stop gas pain. GasX seems to work a little bit but not as much as I expected. I was vomiting for 24 hours straight post surgery and I kept taking gravol which of course made me drowsy . So I couldn’t walk as much as I had hoped. Today is the first day where I feel a tad better. I should mention though my heating pad was my saviour. Good luck with your progress.

Iron Deficiency Anemia-- Best tolerated supplements?
The Greater Fool replied to Tink22-sleeve's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I take Slow-FE, which is time released, so not hard on stomach or constipation. I've had Gastric Bypass and concerned about time-released, which on other meds has been a problem, but I apparently absorb enough to deal with my anemia issues. Available everywhere. Good luck, Tek -
Who experienced heartburn or GERD after gastric sleeve?
3catnight replied to 3catnight's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My surgeon encouraged me to choose the sleeve over bypass because the previous hernia surgery is less likely to cause complications with the sleeve. And I'd like to eventually be able to take anti-inflammatory meds again. My mom had bypass 14 years ago and she can't take anything much for her arthritis because anti-inflammatory meds burn her stomach. I don't want to be in the same boat when I'm her age. -
Who experienced heartburn or GERD after gastric sleeve?
lizonaplane replied to 3catnight's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had occassional GERD/heartburn when I overate prior to surgery. I am 7.5 months out and I've only had heartburn once - after eating crackers. I know many people get hiatal hernia repairs with sleeve. But I'd ask your doctor whether they recommend bypass or sleeve. -
Who experienced heartburn or GERD after gastric sleeve?

I am not in a similar situation not but wonder if you have reason to choose sleeve instead of bypass. Many people with history of gerd opt for bypass. -
Who experienced heartburn or GERD after gastric sleeve?
liveaboard15 replied to 3catnight's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I got the sleeve on April 18th. I have had a few days where the reflux was extremely painful. I have yet been unable to lay down to sleep because of it. I am on a medication for 30 days called pantoprazole 40mg. It worries me a lot because i cant afford to get a revision. I never had this issue before surgery. If you have heartburn. Getting the bypass may be best. It basically eliminates GERD for most people. -
May Surgery Buddies
The Traveler replied to The Traveler's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just heard today that my surgery is a go ahead (assuming a negative COVID test on Saturday) for next Tuesday. I am an American living in Belgium, and was surprised at the hoops you have to jump through to get the surgery I had a gastroscopy and gallbladder ultrasounds, meetings with the endocrinologist, heart specialist, bypass surgeon, dietician, and psychologist. In addition, there was a blood test, urine test, and sleep study. To qualify for insurance you need to either have a bmi over 40 or a bmi over 35 with an additional co-mortality of either high blood pressure, diabetes or sleep apnea. Luckily, I failed the sleep exam as the other co-mortalities were not applicable for me. Gastric bypass is close to 6000 euros, but normal health insurance covers 5000 of it. Luckily, I have another insurance that will cover the rest. What is it like in other countries? -

Self pay- insurance doesn’t cover WLS
liveaboard15 replied to Changenprogress's topic in Insurance & Financing
That is what i was thinking too. Probably going to have to choose the sleeve or bypass if they want insurance to cover. -
Self pay- insurance doesn’t cover WLS
catwoman7 replied to Changenprogress's topic in Insurance & Financing
it might not cover the DS. A lot of insurance policies that DO cover WLS will only cover sleeve and bypass (some will cover DS - but not all). -
Nausea and fatigue after eating
catwoman7 replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
if this is happening right after eating, another strong possibility is a stricture. They happen to about 5% of gastric bypass patients, and you're in the right window of time for it (they almost always occur within 1-3 months post-op. They're very rare after that point). I had two of them - one at four weeks out and the other at around eight weeks out. They're an easy "fix". Regardless, let your clinic know what's going on. What you're experiencing is not normal. -
Vasovagal Syncope ( Fainting ) episode
PhantumBelly replied to catfish87's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Could really be a number of things for many of you here. I use an at home monitor and I was having low blood pressure 88/58 etc. .. For those who speculate orthostatic hypertension diagnosis can be confirmed with the tilt table test mentioned by a poster in this thread it could also be,for those with bypass, reactive hypoglycemia (occurs like 3 hours after eating something substantionally Carby) which u could use a cheap glucometer or borrow a friends during an episode to test if your blood sugar is low. For those who want a diagnosis after having low blood sugar it can be confirmed with lab test gtt (glucose tolerance test) extended 4 hours -
Hey! I had my bypass Feb 14 this year. It's been pretty smooth sailing honestly up until the last week. Everytime I eat, about 15 minutes later I get extremely nauseous and even start retching. I threw up the other day actually after eating a protein yogurt but nothing came out. Just some red stuff from a pill I took. I'm not eating sugar or high carb foods. It's all stuff I ate before no problem. Liquids seem to be fine but I've had things like eggs, avocado, protein yogurt, cheese and cooked vegetables and wow do I feel like I need to throw up after. I eat slow and stick to small portions too. And then every now and then after eating I get incredibly fatigued and feel like I need to go to sleep. I've never had issues with insulin/pre diabetes or diabetes and feel like that's unlikely since I've been in weight loss mode and barely eating. It's getting difficult to reach my protein goal because I get so sick all of a sudden after eating. I really don't want to fall behind on things. Wondering if this is a stricture or normal? Am I becoming intolerant to certain foods or is the restriction just going strong? Feels so all of a sudden. Is there something I can do for a couple days to "reset" like only liquids or something? I'm scheduled for a gastric bypass and hiatal hernia repair on May 16th. I'm glad I joined this forum as it's given me so much insight and knowledge of what to expect and how to deal with it, it's such a releife to read other people's experiences. You know you're let alone! I dont believe any research can give you this much information that is 100% accurate then from the people who have actually experienced it. Good luck to all who are waiting for their surgery best wishes🙏🙏🙏

Gastric bypass and hiatal hernia repair 27th april
Merill replied to Merill's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Oh my 😕 4 days is very limited but chin-up and just pray that all goes well and there's no complications. My surgery is on the 16th of May, I too will be getting a hiatal hernia repair and gastric bypass, I've had my hernia for years. Can't wait to get it repaired finally! But I think you should be ok with 4 days of recovery as long as there's no other complications just make sure that you do light core exercises and lots of walking prior to surgery, that will speed up your recovery (as I heard from people who have had it) And good luck with your surgery hope all goes well for you Sparkly🙏👍 -
Revision without a high enough bmi now
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to Nanajoy's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm in the process of revision. My band was removed one year ago. I'm about to have bypass surgery very soon. I can tell you that medicare covers revision and it's based upon medical necessity, and they review each case individually. I had GERD. So before removing my band, my surgeon did a couple of tests. An EGD and also a special fluoroscopy test that looks for dysmotility of the esophagus and also reflux/GERD. You basically eat a marshmallow and then a piece of bagel (if neccessary) on fluoroscopy while they tilt the table that you're secured on to certain degrees. It's almost like swallowing food at an angle. It's really strange. I didn't even get to the bagel before the marshmallow refluxed upwards and outward. The test reports are sent to the insurance company to establish medical necessity for removal. So because Lap Band failed me, I can get revision. So if you're having issues with your band, I would say you will be approved very easily. When you have issues with the band, those issues override BMI. Because you're not asking for revision so much for weight loss, but primarily due to the intolerance or issues the band has created. I wish you well on your journey to revision! -
Yes there is a whole forum for revision surgeries and sleeve to bypass seems to be mentioned on here quite often because of GERD. It’s a pretty common procedure.
