  1. Wow. I WISH this was "EASY!!!" What a load. Don't listen to that unless it comes from somebody that has actually HAD the surgery. Having invasive abdominal surgery to lose weight is EASY??? That doesn't even make sense. I have to watch what I eat. And it's not just counting calories for me. My body is being really resistant. Even if I stay under 900 calories per day, I don't lose weight. I have to take two meals away and make them Slim-Fast shakes instead. Does that sound EASY? It sucks. I look forward to when I can get this weight off so that I can eat 3 normal meals per day rather than one regular meal and two shakes. This is not the easiest way I have ever lost weight. The only time losing weight was "easy" for me was when I was on Atkins the very first time in HS because I lost the weight very quickly and only had about 40 lbs to lose. The weight dropped off in a couple of months. That was the end of easy dieting for me. The only difference I have this time losing weight as opposed to other times when I did it the "hard" way (rolling my eyes!!) is that this time, I know it'll be "easier" to KEEP OFF. It is NOT easier to GET off. It'll be easier to KEEP off. Is the point of losing weight not to keep the weight off? Or do they truly expect you to yo-yo for the rest of your life? Your body is going to fight and fight HARD to keep that weight - that's its famine storage. It's not an easy battle EVER. You know what, this PBS special actually explained A LOT to me about what fat is and how it relates to the body. VERY interesting and maybe you can get some in your family to watch it so they can understand your struggle: FAT: What No One Is Telling You - Watching: Chapter 1 | PBS You have to do what makes YOU happy. The possibility of dying from the anesthesia is incredibly low compared to the likelihood of suffering from disease (and possibly dying) related to obesity. You have to take a look at what would make YOU happy. You can't please all of the people all of the time. Take this time in your life to choose something to make YOU happy. For the anesthesia question, no - no complications whatsoever. I had about 2 seconds of nausea when they wanted me to drink some Water after the surgery and that was it.

Does anyone workout on their pre-op diet?

I'm on 800 calories a day for 12 weeks prior to my actual "preop". For me, no, I haven't worked out. I work on my feet all day and I do some light walking ( about 30-45 minutes at 2.7 MPH)
  3. Well I went to the gym did 10 mins on the elliptical and felt like I could have done more but had alreay burned 110 calories so decided to stop. I also did a few weights. I feel hungry but didn't get lite headed. So I'm happy about that.

    Has anyone changed physiologically?

My first question would be---how much have you lost. You say you lost great at first---did you lose approximately the equivalent of what you were losing on these diets pre banding? The less you weigh now, the less you can take it without exerting more. If you are seriously watching the basic calories in and calories out--and still not losing, then it seems to me it is time to have a complete blood work up done, and examine things closer. There are health issues that interfere with weight loss---but I don't know anything about them suddenly appearing post banding---it is not something I have ever heard of. If I don't do some exercise (and I am not a die hard, hours each day kind of person---I am talking a walk, or a trip to Curves) AND get my Water in, I am to a point I simply maintain, I will not lose if I do not do both, on a daily basis. I don't care to cut my caloric intake any further, I feel I am at a good place to be healthy in the nutrients I am able to take in. So, my option is to work a little harder, or a little longer---and that is it in a nutshell---the rest is up to me! I could go for another fill, and likely lose it much quicker, but at what cost??? If I cannot take in proper nutrition, then I have not gained what I was after in the first place---good health!!! It seems like a stupid thing to ask, but have you seriously tracked your intake---on something like Fitday? It is often the little bites of this and that that knocks our calorie count way up during the day. Hope you figure it out, I understand the frustration. I went through it not long back---a sudden and total stop to loss. Nothing I did changed it. So I did just as I suggested, and had some blood work done. Not only did my thyroid come back at a bad level, they discovered it had a mass on it. I ended up with a huge tumor removed, as well as most of my thyroid, and my weight loss will now rev up IF I do as I said above....otherwise, here I sit...... If you know you are not sabotaging yourself in anyway, have a check up! Better safe than sorry! Kat

    Pounds!

My 14 day pre-op diet is required by my doctor, and consists of 4 Protein shakes or bars each day and one Lien Cuisine meal. They must all total no more than 1200 calories. The Protein shakes must have more than 10% protein versus calories (I use Ensure High Protein Milk chocolate - very, very yummy. They have 210 calories and 25 grams of protein. So, the calorie/protein ratio is good with the requirement). I've lost 8.5 pounds so far in my pre-op and I'm in day 10. Have 4 more days till surgery. Good luck!
  6. Thank you both for your response! My sister brought over a drink called Body Armor lite super drink. It has 20'calories and lots of electrolytes and it has coconut water in it. It's all natural with 200% of the b vitamins. It's really good! I sure don't want to go to the hospital! I will drink this along with water and hot tea in between time. I was super dizzy. Every time I would get out of bed my dog would go crazy until I got back in. I think my dog sensed that I wasn't feeling well! I think you are both absolutely right, the dreaded dehydration. Thanks again!!
  7. I just bought Protein powder at GNC called MyoFusion (cost $25 you most likely will get a student discount just ask) each scoop has 25g of protein. You can make it yourself in a blender ball cup (i like to add ice) 147 calories you get 25g of protein so if you double up for 300 calories you get 50g of protein and it tastes good! If you could afford the calories add 8oz of fat free milk and you get another 9g of protein for a total of 34g or 59g of protein in one 8oz serving of protein shake! I tried the chocolate (they gave me a free sample) it was good but I bought the vanilla, they come in strawberry and banana flavored too. Also she told me its made with 3 types of Proteins that release at different times and keeps you fuller longer. They use it to make all their smoothies so it was worth a shot. Also it has 25 servings per container. They have a smoothie bar there and the girl gave me some great ideas. Put in a blender with ice. The vanilla powder you can add fruits for flavor or even sugar free cocoa powder. The Chocolate you can add 1 tsp of Peanut Butter or nutella! She said one customer puts raw oatmeal in the vanilla one and blends with ice. I am about to make a shake now. I am still in the process of getting aproved fot the lapband but I want to start getting use to drinking these and I could stand to start losing some weight.

    How can this be???

Another reason that Peanut Butter might make you feel full is that it's got a lot of fat. Fat slows down gastric emptying (lap band or not). So does Protein, and so does Fiber. Just remember -- eating a TB of peanut butter will add 90 calories and 8 g of fat to your meal. Just be sure to account for it. I suggest trying to get some healthy fat at each meal- whether it be from a nut butter (and of course natural is healthier), avocado , olive oil or fatty fish. Often, we lap-banders forego as much fat as possible when really we need some to be healthy and satisfied.

    Getting Enough Water

Yesterday, I went to an all-day event that featured Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen (they wrote the "you" books and are on Oprah all the time). It was a great day and I got to ask Dr. Roizen a question when he autographed my book. He told me that anything that has no sugar and less than 15 calories is OK as Water. So, that includes coffee, crystal lite, regular water, etc. I also drink something called FUZE. I buy it at costco or Safeway. I get the low carb, slenderize variety and think it's wonderful. I always have something to drink with me. Steph

    Head Hunger or Real Hunger?

Hiyas Leener, I'm about two months out now and it's starting to get a little easier to discern between the head stuff and the real stuff. But it's taken some serious retraining. What I do when I have the initial thought of "I'm hungry" is focus on my stomach. Am I really hungry? Do I feel anything coming from inside my stomach that would indicate true hunger? If I think about my stomach and can say I'm not really hungry, then I try to identify where the signals are coming from. Typically, I find that if I'm bored my mind comes up with eating as somethign to do. I also focus on my mouth.. am I thirsty? A lot of times, we mistake thirst for hunger and drinking Water will take care of the thoughts. Since you are on liquids, I wouldn't be too worried about how often you need to eat. It's only natural that this stuff will be going right through you. Eat when you need to. Just make sure you're drinking good healthy stuff, watch your calories and focus on healing right now. I was supposed to get 600 calories a day on liquids and 800 on mushies. I don't think I ever accomplished either one, and I think I was "eating" about every two hours. I hope this helps ya sis. *hugs*

    time off

I needed a full 4 days before going back to work....and then it was half-days! I suppose I could've pushed myself to go back sooner but I didn't! I also had so much bloated gas I'm not sure I could've worn work clothes before 4 days! LOl! It's also kind hard to return to full days of work when you're only taking in very few calories!!!!
  12. I was told that it was better to eat your protein, than to drink it, but if you need the extra, I use a protein shake that I get at costco, and it has 30 grams of protein, and very little in terms of carbs, or fat or calories. I use a shake in the morning, because I cannot eat anything in the AM, and I will use one sometimes in the afternoon as a snack, just to keep up on the protein, I used to use a protein powder and mix it with milk, cause the taste was horrible for me when I mixed it with water, and the calories was too much. Thus the protein shake from Costco. Good Luck
  13. CRAP!!! It looked right when I filled in the post box. DAMN! Okay, to summarize. One packt of CIB Chocolate Malt is 130 calories alone. Mix it with one cup (8 fl oz) SKIM milk and it becomes 220 calories. Double that and you get 440 calories without fruit or anything added. That is a lot!
  14. I would like to know approximatley how many calories, on an average should I consume a day? I would really appreciate some insight on this please. I don't want to eat too much.

    Failure

I am 3.5 years out and yes my appetite is back. I think that is normal... The whole idea is that the WLS helps us develop new habits, and even all these years later I really CAN'T eat as much as I used to as long as I stick to dense Protein first... everytime. My advice is to go back to basics. Protein first. Don't drink with meals but hydrate really well between meals. Limit carbs - and don't eat junky slider type foods. dont drink your calories (soda, fruit juice, booze etc) and watch out for "healthy sugars" as they can trigger cravings too - examples are fruit and fruit juices. Watch Protein Bars as they are high calorie/high carb. It is a lifelong struggle but I will say I am alot happier fighting it out in the 150s than I was fighting it out in the 300 plus plus range.... Hang in there! Oh I am sorry, I thought you were a sleever like me... it seems you posted in the bypass forums so I assume you had a different surgery. I suspect my advice/comments are similiar though regardless of the WLS type...
  16. I posted this originally in response to a question about ice cream, then decided it really should be here. It's an ice cream substitute that's good for those who can have whole fruits. All it takes is a food processor, but an ice cream maker would be great to give it a better consistency. 2-3 large, very ripe/black bananas Good-quality cocoa to-taste 1 teaspoon vanilla Sweetener to-taste (optional) Leave the bananas until they're very black but not rotten, to ensure that they're as sweet as possible. Peel them, cut them into 3-4 pieces each, place on a cookie sheet and freeze solid. Add the frozen bananas to the food processor 1/2 at a time, blending until they're completely creamed. Add the vanilla and 1-1/2 tablespoons cocoa, blending until thoroughly mixed. Taste, then add more cocoa and/or sweetener as needed. It should have a consistency similar to soft-serve ice cream. If you add it to an ice cream maker and process per the machine's instructions, it should become airier and creamier as it's processed. Either way, it's an excellent dessert that's full of Vitamins and you don't have to tell anyone how good for you it is! Here's the rough nutrition information. It's based on 1/2 cup of mashed banana and a tablespoon of cocoa. Calories: 112 Fat: 1.1 grams Saturated fat: .6 grams Carbs: 28.6 grams Fiber: 4.7 grams Sugar: 13.9 grams Protein: 2.3 grams

    Drinking?!?

My understand is yes you can have an occasional drink. It will hit you harder than before the band and yes it is empty calories. Just no beer or carbonated drinks.

At 800 Cals Are You Losing Weight

341 lbs 700 calories losing daily. Most of my meal is Protein Sent from my iPhone using VST
  20. Hi all, I am one month post op and have gone from 266lbs to 245lbs. Just transitioned to soft food 8 days ago and am at a complete stall. Only consuming 600 calories per day and getting almost all of my water in. Trying not to get frustrated as I have another 110 lbs to lose... Is this normal?
  21. Finally had the follow up, Dr put in for my approval today! I got through a lot of the crap really quick, quit smoking, lost the 16 lbs the dr told me to for insurance, saw the food shrink, saw the nutritionist, sleep clinic.... Long story short I finished all those requirements in less than 6 weeks, and finally had my follow up with the surgeon today. I weighed in where I needed to and the Surgeon said he was going to submit the request to insurance so we could set a surgery date, Hell Yeah!! The office girl that works with the insurance company's told me that with my insurance acceptance letters usually come within three weeks and often before two weeks is up! I'm so frigging happy I could just explode! I really want to get this done before September, and be on my way to looking and being healthy next summer. The only problem I'm gonna have is maintaining the weight loss I have had to get this far, I lost it quickly by eating between 800 to 1000 calories per day, and I'm not sure how much it'll take to maintain this weight. I may take a couple practice shots at this liquid diet while I'm waiting out the rest of the process, does everyone use slim fast or Opti Fast? I tend to like the EAS Protein lite, it only has 100 calories, Same with Muscle milk light, and BJ's sells them both by the case.

    Dying to be thin

I wonder if you can call overeaters anonymous in your area to see if they are a good fit (for the purging)? Thats a free support group. Please know that 900 calories is NOT a lot! I know you have a few people that run around here touting that they only eat 600 a day but that's just not realistic for MOST of us! You need to let go of that guilt. Your weight loss sounds great by the way.. My whole six months has been a stall it seems but it does come off a pound here and a pound there... It's just the way it works for some if us.
  23. The first weeks after surgery are the most important time NOT TO CHEAT! You are healing and can do damage that may not show up right now, but further down the line. Once you get off all the liquid and mushy stages then you can begin to eat regular again. It will come, trust me but PLEASE let your band and your body heal. And I also don't believe that after you are on regular food again, there is no cheating for me. What I mean by that is if I want something, I am going to have it. I limit the cravings and do great portion control, but I'm not going to deny myself anything at this point in time. I need to learn to make the right decisions and having things some people call "bad" is not a decision that I want for the rest of my life. I have lost 50 pounds since surgery in June, and I am doing that by working out and watching my calories, but if I want a candy bar, or a piece of pizza (which is kinda hard to do now that I have good restriction) then I'm not going to deny myself and then end up eating things just to take that craving away, and then end up eating it anyway. I don't consider myself on a DIET, I consider that I am eating healthy and working out and watching my portions and the band once restriction has taken place, exactly helps achieve that.

    Survived My First BBQ

Thanks! When I was looking at her she just ate a little bit of everything. SHe kept busy cooking and clearing things. She even drank beer that was 64 calories! She sat there wearing her bikini top and at the age of 45 she looked really good. I was thinking about what I would wear to a pool party next year! I'll eventually just have to say I am on a diet when they see me eating very little. Thanks again for all the support!!
  25. I am only 2 months out and can honestly say that I am not over the food obsession yet. The mental has been much more difficult than the physical for me. I am not doing any counseling yet but my primary doctor has suggested it, more so for handling stress but I am sure I can bring up this issue as well. My advice would be: if you are craving something, have a couple of bites and move on. Your stomach will not allow you to eat a quantity that will do super damage. You may be over your calories or carbs for one day, but you get right back on it the next day. I have decided that I can have an ounce or two of lemoncello liquor on Friday/Saturday nights, but will not drink any other nights unless it is a special occasion. On the weekends, I am also having a treat if I want one. Yesterday it was a few bites of a brownie with cream cheese frosting. Today it was part of a mocha freeze from costco. I am so sick of chocolate right now, I doubt I will have any more for quite a while. As for the extra time, I really haven't had that much yet cause it takes so dang long to eat 2 ounces! I really wish I could spend 5 or 10 minutes eating and then move on to something more exciting. :smile1: You probably will need to find something fun or productive to do, instead of grazing in the kitchen like we used to. I am so glad to hear your sister is supportive! My sister has been great, altho I didn't tell her until the night before I left for San Diego. She was concerned for my safety and well being, but certainly did not try to talk me out of it. My 24 yr old daughter, on the other hand, still thinks I am crazy. But then, she knows it all :sad0:!! Good luck to you! It is a wonderful tool.
