Eosinophilic esophagitis
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to rcendres's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
According to this: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31620913/ "The incidence of EE (Eosinophilic Esophagitis) 1 year after SG (sleeve gastrectomy) is greater than GBP (gastric bypass). Moreover, not only GBP seems to improve this condition, but also SG tends to worsen EE. These results are to be associated with GERD disease." So it looks like your doctor may want you to switch to the bypass instead of the sleeve. -
Eosinophilic esophagitis
jenuinelygenuinely replied to rcendres's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
They might ask you if you want to do a Gastric Bypass. After my Gastric Sleeve, I developed severe GERD, and now getting a revision to a Bypass. The sleeve will worsen your reflux and damage your esophagus. -
Hi. Sorry! It's a newer version of the DS where they only bypass one part of the intestine. It's also called the SADI-S or SIPS. Sent from my Pixel 5a using BariatricPal mobile app

Hey There! Any December 2021 Surgery Friends?
LuckyCat replied to armartin98's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey, y'all! I'm down about 75 lbs from my highest weight (around Thanksgiving), and down about 60 lbs from my surgery weight on December 2nd. That puts me at the halfway point toward my realistic goal (i.e., not the "medically ideal" weight of 115, which I haven't seen since, like, 5th grade, lol). The weight is coming off a little slower than I'd prefer, but the non-scale victories are undeniable. My A1C dropped from 8.8 to 6.4, and I expect it to continue improving. I flew to NYC in May and was reasonably comfortable in a coach seat — no seat belt extender necessary! Plus, I walked all over the city for days, and found myself energized, not exhausted. I think best of all, I'm actually enjoying exercise for the first time in my life. It feels like a pleasure, not a punishment. I'm doing everything from the step machine to (tragically slow) jogging, yoga to Beat Saber on the Oculus. Just last October, I was too out of shape to take my kids trick-or-treating, and had to sit down on the curb to keep from hyperventilating. So, the change is dramatic! I do have more hunger than I would have anticipated. I can easily eat 2,000 kcal a day if I don't police it. I can eat only small quantities at a time, of course, but find myself ravenously hungry an hour later. I try to focus on protein and healthy fats, which helps. Also, food in general feels less like an emotional coping mechanism than just fuel to keep me going; it's less thrilling than it used to be, which is refreshing. For me at least, bypass is a good tool, but still involves willpower and intent — which I can live with. So glad to hear from y'all, and to know you're here. -

I can't speak on revisions but when I was deciding on sleeve over bypass everything I read told me bypass was more effective and my doctor confirmed it. As far as warning signs there aren't any, you will start to feel full and a "heaviness" and very uncomfortable. If you eat too much too fast you may regurgitate/ throw up. Your pouch will only take what it can take. In the 7 weeks since my bypass surgery I've thrown up 2x and each time I wasn't paying attention and either took too big of a bite or ate too much too fast. I also went from GERD every other night pre-op to none post-op. I'm off my Diabetes meds and IBS meds. I haven't had a single regret. -
I’ve been on my liquid diet for the past four days and I am sooo hungry! I’m limited to protein shakes and high protein yogurts. I’m so sick of them already! Also, I found out yesterday that my surgery authorization didn’t go through so I’m supposed to find out today if my surgeon will do the hiatal hernia repair; that way I can self pay for the bypass part of the surgery. My surgery scheduler quoted me $2600 for the bypass portion and that’s very doable for me! Now I just have to wait and see if my doctor will go ahead with the hernia repair! 🙏🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

My surgeon doesn't even offer the lap band. Sleeve, Bypass and DS were my only options with him. -

I noticed more pain post bypass. Probably part due to the opiate crisis and the docs not prescribing opiates for pain control where I live. Also part due to the hernia repair that was not anticipated by the surgeon or myself! I might ask the person you consult with if damage to the esophagus is permanent or reversible. I’m praying my damage resolved itself now that acid isn’t flushing up there every time I eat. I will say there’s a lot of comments about revisions losing slower and I’m happily surprised to be down 50lbs since 5/6/22 ✌️ I strongly considered the advice from the surgeon I consulted with. So if they say sleeve will get you the results you want, consider that. Same for bypass if they say that! -
I wouldn't necessarily say warning signs, just feeling full and uncomfortable. I work hard at keeping my portions reasonable so I don't really have to worry about it. I also don't get dumping syndrome which is one thing I was worried about. Apparently only about 30% of bypass patients get it.

Advice Needed: BPD/DS or SADI?
NovaLuna replied to jenniferann's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I chose the Loop DS (virgin surgery not revision) for myself because of what the surgeons themselves were saying about common issues with the original DS (diarrhea). That was the only reason I choose the Loop DS lol. I met my goal weight (even if I'm currently up 6 pounds due to meds I'm taking, but I WAS up 18 pounds and dropped 12 so... I guess I can deal with 6 pounds. I'll lose it eventually. Or try to.). If I had to do it all over again... I would probably do the traditional DS. Simply because you lose a tad bit more weight with the traditional (according to my surgeon. It's supposedly only a tiny bit, but still) and I wonder if I'd picked it if I would have been able to get closer to a 'normal' BMI. I'm still technically 'overweight' but I figure if I ever do skin removal I'll probably lose a good 10-20 pounds of loose skin and even if I'd STILL be 'overweight' at least I'd be in spitting distance of a 'normal' BMI (I have no idea why I'm putting it in quotations...😓 I can't stop myself 😅). Anyway, you go with your gut instincts. The surgery is for you and you're the one who has to live with it so trust in whatever you decide to do. -
Physically I don't feel a difference. I spent one night at the hospital after the revision to RNY and released the next morning. The recovery is about the same, probably less painful with the RNY but that may be because I was prepared for gas pains... Etc. I want to say don't let the re-routing part concern you but I'm not one talk, I put off the revision to RNY quite a few times, but in retrospect, I was so silly. This has been the best decision of my life. Honestly.

I think if one has had the lapband already, better to go bypass since the potential gerd and esophagus irritation problems that the lapband itself can cause. Less future problems. Now if you never had the lapband, then I think a "virgin" sleeve's weight loss is really good, and probably less likely to cause future gerd problems compared to those who had the band first. Just my thinking, I could be wrong. I just know going from lapband to sleeve, it was a struggle as far as restriction. I did lose weight but it was hard and I never got below 160 lb with vsg because to me, the lapband had far more restriction than the sleeve. With the RNY, it is a totally different ballgame and no gerd.

Thank you! You are so correct. Most of the negativity has come from those who are uneducated concerning WLS. Rather than hear it, I only share with those who support me. I appreciate your input. Your story seems similar to the issue I had with my gastric band. With the band when I ate too much or ate too fast, I would feel nauseous. Are there any warning signs with the bypass?

Hello! I am going to be having a laproscopic gastric bypass later this fall and my husband is 100% unsupportive. He says I am stupid if I have the surgery and that I am taking the lazy way out. He believes the exact same results can be reached with diet and exercise alone. I am turning 40 this year and am 5'4 and weigh 330lbs. I have dieted, worked out alone, with groups and with personal trainers until I am blue in the face and will lose 30 to 40 pounds then gain it all back. I am very stout in my build. I have 7 inches of spinal column that fused to my tailbone in development so my overall body is meant to be 5'10-5'11. I will never be skinny. I want to be healthy. Him not being supportive will not stop me from going forward but how do I make him understand this is the right move for me? I will also note that no one in his family is supportive as they are all very close-minded and have the same negative attitude he does. He is not overweight. He is a farmer, is very active and his metabolism is great. We have two young daughters and they are my why. I want my next 40 years to be my healthiest.

Advice Needed: BPD/DS or SADI?
brocker33 replied to jenniferann's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just had a sleeve revision to SADI on July 21. So far so good. I did a lot of research as well and decided that I preferred the simpler less risky option. -
Hello All, I have the opportunity to get either a BPD/DS or a SADI revision to my original/broken 2002 Lap-Band. I've done a lot of research and I like the statistics of the BPD/DS and that it's the most powerful and successful WLS available today. I did some research into SADI and the early numbers are pretty promising, plus it seems like a slightly safer procedure with potentially less complications - but I dislike that the statistics are just not quite there after roughly 6 years. I'm torn. I'm leaning BPD/DS, but I want to really consider both procedures. FYI my stats are 5"4", 325lb, Age 44 F. I live in the UK. I have reached out to the UK surgeons listed on this page for my DS Revision: https://bariatricfacts.org/threads/current-list-of-known-rny-to-ds-surgeons.1403/ So knowing what you know, what would you do in my position - BPD/DS or SADI? I want to hear your opinions, please!! I genuinely see benefits to both surgeries, I have a bias towards the available stats for the BPD/DS though.

It's taken me a little longer than the first time to lose the weight post-revision, but I'm a few years older and also I started out a little lower. It's been about 8 months after my surgery and I'm at about the weight I was about 7 months after the sleeve. I'm approaching the lowest I ever was post-sleeve and hoping to break through and go lower now.

I agree!!! I feel like the sleeve was commercialized. I use to follow the huge Instagram sleeve communtiy and saw all the success people had with the sleeve which steered me getting the sleeve instead of bypass. I cannot deal with GERD anymore! It was so bad one time I had to sleep sitting up and even then acid came out of my nose! Cheers to revision! -

This sounds like what I went through!!! I hear a lot of people say the revision makes you stall on weight loss! Is it true? Did you have to work harder after your revision?? -
Looking for friends, just starting my journey!

Welcome to all the new people! I am new too! I had my Gastric Bypass RNY on June 7, 2022. I am 44 married +22 years to my high school sweetheart with 16 and 12 year old daughters. I live in northwest Florida. This board has answered so many questions, some before I knew I had them😂 . The people are great and super supportive. This is a wonderful resource. -
revisions always seem to be slower than virgin surgeries. That said, you can always lose more weight by cutting calories....I mean if you're willing to do that (I know I could lose more by cutting them, but evidently I'm not willing to do that because here I sit....still 10-ish lbs heavier than what I want to be...)

PreSurgery i lost some, then after the surgery ive lost about 30 lbs. And now nothing. Yes, i look at what i eat, and water intake. The scale hasnt moved in months. Not sure it might be because i was a lapband then went to bypass and my body is not letting go. Let me tell ya its frustrating. prior lapband patient band removal 11/18/21 sw 257 surgery date was 1/18/22 because of covid it was rescheduled to 2/1/22

Yes, sleeve to bypass here as well. I too developed severe GERD with no previous history of it and when in my surgery the doc said he found severe erosion and a hernia. 🤷🏼♀️ I wish I would have just went bypass too. -
I had a sleeve to bypass revision this past August. If it is anything like my experience, I think you will love the bypass. I wish I went straight to the RNY too. I had developed severe gerd and esophagitis with my vsg in the later years. I feel far more normal physically with the bypass than I did with the sleeve because I don't have any side effects. I feel similar to before any WlS but have better appetite control and therefore, good weight loss. I wish I was like the others who never had problems with my sleeve but sigh, here I am.
