  1. I am 8 years out from my sleeve and have had GERD since. It has progressively gotten worse. They found a fairly large hiatal hernia. Initially my doc was recommending the bypass conversion but he was concerned it would cause more problems for me since I really don’t have that much more to lose. I had a hernia repair surgery on 7/26 and was told I actually had two! They fixed the hernias, stitched the diaphragm where the esophagus passes, and placed a dissolvable mesh wrap. I am on full liquids until my follow up on 8/10. Overall, I think I did better post op with the sleeve as physically it’s been pretty rough. I was told to quit taking my PPIs and haven’t needed them so I’m hopeful that this will work. He said we can keep the bypass as a last resort but my BMI is down to 26.3 so I don’t think it’s truly an option. I also think if I had known what the past 8 years would be like I may have just opted for bypass from the beginning.
  2. Hi @schla73. I'm not an expert, but I haven't heard of a Gasteric Sleeve Bypass. Is that like the Duodenal Switch (DS)? Many have had to lose weight prior to surgery. In my case, it was my insurance company that required me to have 3 visits to the surgeon, each at least 1 month apart, and I had to show them I was taking this seriously by losing weight before each appointment. Then there's the pre-op diets that many have to do which shrinks the liver and makes the surgery easier for the surgeon. I lost 28 pounds in the 3 1/2 months prior to surgery.
  3. I’m so glad this is working for you. I also have Aetna. I have GERD, but the EGD only showed a hietal hernia. I looked at the guidelines and they changed the requirements if get a revision to bypass only for GERD. I’m hoping the hernia repair will be enough to get approval. anyone knows more about this?
  4. hey! how was your surgery, how are you feeling? I’m on the same boat trying to get the surgery. Same thing, GERD after sleeve, EGD showed an hernia and I want to get revision to bypass. My BMI is 31 and my fear is that my insurance won’t cover it 😢
  5. I’m on the same boat. I already started the process to get a revision to bypass with a BMI of 31. I had very bad GERD but the EGD only showed up a hietal hernia, and I guess Aetna guidelines says esophagitis. I’m terrified they would not approve me because of this 😭

    New Member/Revisions

Anyone here got the revision from sleeve to bypass with a lower BMI? Long story short, I got a revision from band to sleeve on 2016, reached my goal weight, and started to have lots of reflux and life and my current BMI is now 31. I started the process to get a revision, and the EDG only showed a 4cm hietal hernia but nothing related to esophagitis. I have to go back to the doctor next week, but I’m fearful my insurance will deny me because they would need more proof of my GERD. I read the guidelines for Aetna, and it says esophagitis 😭
  7. Hey everyone! I’m new here. I am in the process of having all my appointments for the Gastric Sleeve Bypass. I don’t see a lot of people talking about this particular surgery and wondered if anyone else has had it. It’s supposed to have the same outcomes as the RNY with less complications. This has been a long journey for me. I started the process several years ago and when I changed jobs my new insurance didn’t cover the surgery. That was devastating but now I’m with a much better surgical center and couldn’t be happier with the process. My biggest frustration is that the surgeon is requiring I lower my BMI before surgery. This amounts to about 40 pounds. It feels overwhelming. I keep thinking, if basic weight loss hasn’t worked for me before how am I ever going to accomplish this task! I’ve lost 18.2 pounds thus far. I know it’s good weight loss but I keep getting hung up on the final result and how far out of reach it seems. That’s all I can think of to share for now. I look forward to reading the journey of others.

    Liquid diet

I have been using the patch multivitamin too for about 7 years. First with the VSG, and a year now after my RNY revision. I do add the Calcium chews caramel apples or grape flavor from time to time. If I don't use my patches (i.e. ran out and waiting for new order) I like the Barimelts ADEK. Vitamin/mineral blood tests good. This year I switched brands though and went to PatchAid since my old brand changed vitamin/mineral percentage.

3 months post VSG and NOTHING

I feel your frustration! I’ve only lost about 60 lbs in the past year and a half since my VSG. My dietitian isnt very helpful in my trying to get my grams of protein other than adding protein shakes which definitely slows down my weight loss! I’ve resorted to eating (and tracking!) an all protein diet (eggs, fish, chicken, etc..) and adding in small amounts of green veggies. To get to my protein goals I have to add a protein powder like unflavored GenePro to my food and drinks. I only weigh myself a few days a week. Now I’ve developed terrible acid reflux and a hiatal hernia so I’m going to be revised to a RNY. I’m hoping it will fix a multitude of issues!!! Hang in there! Take a look at MyFitnessPal to track your food and macros!
  10. I started to have GERD symptoms about six months after my VSG. They’ve continued to worsen and now bother me in my sleep a lot. Even though I take esomeprazole in the AM and Pepcid in the PM. To be honest, I wish I would have just had the bypass to begin with! I only lost about 40 to 50 lbs with my sleeve, as well. I still have 50 to 60 lbs to lose so hopefully once I can get my hiatal hernia repaired and the bypass done then I’ll be able to work on losing that extra weight! 🤞🏻😁💕

    7 Months Post-Op

Even though you’ll need to have a revision, I am glad they discovered why you were struggling to eat. Are you sure you have to go through the full pre surgery diet process or just the usual nothing to eat or drink from the night before the surgery practise? Your liver has already shrunk, you’ve lost a lot of weight & your general health would be way better now then when you had the first surgery. But … 🤷🏻‍♀️ You may find it isn’t as difficult this time as at least you’ll know what happens & to expect after surgery. All the best.

    September surgery buddies!!

Welcome and I go through times of nerves and excitement. I've wanted to get the bypass for years so I was super excited when my husband switched jobs and it was now mostly covered by insurance. The closer it gets the more I get nervous because its a big change and because its a choice. Honestly, if I don't get the surgery I'll probably just keep getting bigger and more amd more unhealthy. I have years of proof to myself that regular diets of every other kind have only been temporarily successful. I just have to keep reminding myself of that though lol.
  13. I am scheduled for gastric bypass on September 28th. I'm super nervous and have even had days I've gone back and forth asking myself if I really want to go through with it. I'm new here and getting lots of information. I'm sure I'll have questions soon!

    August surgery buddies!

I am also having hernia repair with my bypass. How ridiculous that your insurance says it isn't medically necessary. I only have a medium sized hiatal hernia and I am in a lot of pain most days and have to sleep in a mostly upright position. I've seen medical journals state that the most effective way to keep the hernia from coming back is to have bypass with the hernia repair. My surgery is scheduled for the 19th. I hope you get insurance approval and can get yours done on 8/29. I saw someone post about non scale victories after the surgery and I am hoping that one of mine will be that I can bend over without throwing up!

    August surgery buddies!

Some of you may already know my surgery got pushed from 8/8 to 8/29 due to an insurance authorization issue. My doctor and surgery scheduler are working hard to try to get me approved for the hiatal hernia repair/ bypass. My insurance said it wasn’t medically necessary. So after already doing one week of pre-op liquid diet I get to start over around the 15th! I also have to have an upper GI to document the hernia. Fun fun! Please keep your fingers crossed that I can get through this!🤞🏻😊

    7 Months Post-Op

Congratulations on your weight loss! Sorry you have to have a revision. I guess all surgeries come with risks, it could be worse, try to stay positive. Hope you feel better soon!
  17. At 7 months post-op, I finally hit 100 Lbs lost. I am scheduled for a conversion on September 1st due to the fact that a recent EGD revealed a kink in my stomach (the part that empties into the intestines). This kink has caused me to not be able to eat and has resulted in the rapid weight loss. My surgeon is going to convert my sleeve into a bypass to correct the issue. I'm supposed to have my gallbladder removed as well due to the fact that I now have gallstones also. It really sucks to have to go through this all over again (the pre-op diet, the procedure & the recovery). Everyone keeps telling me that I need to get myself better and back to 100%, which I agree, but what is to say this is going to do it. I didn't expect this result from the first surgery. But I guess it is a risk you take in having WLS.

    August surgery buddies!

August 3rd gastric bypass. Starting at 370lbs. 6’2.
  19. Hey everyone! I am just starting out my process trying to get all my ducks in a row before January when my insurance kicks in and everything begins… is there any significant difference when choosing a hospital setting over a Bariatric specialist setting to get gastric bypass procedure? I would assume maybe billing might be easier going through a hospital but any other pros/cons? Thank you!
  20. I had the sleeve 2010 and then I asked could I have the bypass 2021 a long road but worth it in the end but I did get told I wouldn't lose as much because of the previous surgery they said I'd only lose 3 stone and I'm now here 112 pounds lighter got saggy skin but no one sees it good luck
  21. VSG is actually stage one of the DS. Years ago many surgeons did the DS in two stages (first, the sleeved stomach, then a few months later, the bypassed small intestine). Some patients did really well just with stage 1, so they started offering the sleeved stomach as a standalone surgery. Ta da! The VSG was born! so yes - lots of DS'ers had their DS done in two stages (esp those who had it done several years ago), and there are definitely people who've revised from VSG to DS. It's a more straightforward surgery than going from VSG to RNY, since you're already halfway to the DS when you have a VSG.
  22. Hello all, This is my first post here so if I mess up on etiquette I apologize. I am two years out from a very successful VSG surgery. I went from 265lbs to 175lbs - I’m 24 and 5’2, barely any loose skin, and I’m very happy with the results. However I have PCOS and was estimated to be able to lose more if I didn’t have that to contend with, and I wasn’t able to hit my realistic OR ideal goals. I know I’m much better off than I was by far, but I still wasn’t fully happy, so I put down a deposit for a DS revision surgery. Because of Covid I had to reschedule it to January 2023. But now I’m suddenly worried and having doubts. I can’t seem to find anyone who has revised from VSG to DS, and I’m worried about losing TOO much weight. My surgeon has had me come entirely off vitamins as my labs are perfect without them, and admittedly I don’t miss them, so that’s a downfall but one I’m willing to accept. My surgeon does also perform RNY and reconstruction but my sleeve hasn’t stretched back out, and he has told me that DS is often referred to as the second stage to VSG. Mostly I’m looking for advice and anecdotes from this forum! Is there anyone who did it in two stages instead of one? Pros and cons? Tips? I’m desperate for anyone who has any experience with this.
  23. Mine took quite a few years. After that it was like gurgling acid in my sleep and a burning esophagus day on and day out. When you can't sleep, one tend to eat for energy. That didn't help my weight loss. It was horrible. I had a revision last August, and I feel so much better.

    Nutritionalist consult

My 2 week pre-op diet was 3-4 shakes a day with no more than 200 calories each and minimum 15g of protein, celery and cucumbers, and 1-2 cups of chicken or beef broth a day. Absolutely NO popsicles or sugar free jello. I would constantly be shaving celery with a peeler into “noodles” and then adding it to the broth for a soup of sorts. AND I was super lucky enough to do it twice in an 8 month period. 😂 (needed a hernia repair surgery that was coupled with a VSG to RNY revision to reduce chances of future hernias.)

    September surgery buddies!!

I'm new and scheduled for bypass Sept 19th. Can't belive its finally getting close because I started the process in Jan. Looking forward to a new me but scared too. Its weird because I've been on so many diets but this time is the 1st time I feel real hope for success but I don't want to get my hopes up too high either. So how do I get info under my name that everyone seems to have?
