  1. 2. I pray that whatever is on the other side of this surgery feels far better than food. I'm struggling today. I promise, it does!! I'm only 5 weeks post-op, but I'm loving my band so far. 3. I'm having thoughts of self-sabotage. Well would happen if I just took a bite...(but I won't!) I still struggle with this daily, but my finance always tells me, "what about that dress you want to fix in November for your friends wedding?" Don't let them get the best of you! 4. This is the first time in the process since I've questioned whether or not I'm doing the right thing. I put of wls from 18 to 26 because I just knew I could do it myself (i've been overweight from childhood). Obvi, when I tipped the scales at 303, I couldn't do it on my own. If you've gotten this far, you know this is the right decision for you! You've got this girl! I cant say enough good things about my band so far, and hopefully you'll feel the same about yours!

    Grazing?

Hi Wonderful Sleevers; I keep reading 'Don't graze!!'. Heck, if I don't graze I don't get my Protein & liquid in. I'm on full foods now and it takes me a good 45 minites to eat, or about an hour to finish a Protein Drink. If I don't eat or drink every few hours, I don't get my quota in. And I really prefer to be eating, not drinking, most of my protein. So can someone please explain what grazing truly means? Thanks!!
  3. Odd science here, depending on your point of view, regardless of what the study showed, there is considerable disagreement on what it means: " NEW YORK (AP) -- Using artificial sweeteners may set the stage for diabetes in some people by hampering the way their bodies handle sugar, suggests a preliminary study done mostly in mice. The authors said they are not recommending any changes in how people use artificial sweeteners based on their study, which included some human experiments. The researchers and outside experts said more study is needed, while industry groups called the research limited and said other evidence shows sweeteners are safe and useful for weight control." read more at http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_MED_ARTIFICIAL_SWEETENERS_?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2014-09-17-13-11-30 further quote: " The results are not pretty: In a series of experiments, researchers found that several of the most widely used types of non-calorie sweeteners in food and drinks — saccharin, sucralose and aspartame — caused mice to experience increased risk of glucose intolerance, a condition that can lead to diabetes. "We are talking about very dramatic increases," said one of the study's co-authors, Eran Segal, a computational biologist at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. The same scientists also monitored what happened to seven human volunteers who did not typically use artificial sweeteners but were given regular doses of saccharin over the course of a week. Four developed significant glucose intolerance, and the others saw no blood sugar benefits from using artificial sweeteners. [The Washington Post]" NOTE: I've followed similar link around and various articles list either SCIENCE or NATURE as being the source of the study. In any case, depending on your link, the emphasis of the report seems to mutate. Good luck. ....oh, and don't use the stuff, IMHO.....

    Writing A Eulogy

Thanks everyone. I do find myself wanting to ask my Uncle more questions about how things were "back in the Day." Mostly it's got me rededicated to completing some things I always wanted to accomplish in my life. My kids (my main project) are grown so the rest is icing (uh oh...not a food metaphor). I do keep thinking that my days are waaaay too much about food. I'd hate it to say on my tombsone: "She Sure Knew How to Eat." :faint:

    Overeating Help!

I would suggest you seek help through therapy to conquer your impulses. Also, regarding your kids, they can like healthier foods, and will only benefit from having harmful things removed from the home. They may not "like" getting healthier eating habits now, but certainly they will appreciate it down the road. Best of luck.

    Overeating Help!

Hi Belaire - My first thought as I read your email is "way to go getting through the surgery and moving on to more solid foods"! That in itself if a huge accomplishment and I think the fact you (we) even had the surgery is HUGE!!! My next thought was "get rid of the food!!!" You are the exact same person you were before you had the surgery - just your tummy isn't. Treat it tenderly. Take care of it. Get rid of anything that causes you problems. You said if it's there you eat it - so clean it out and make your home a sanctuary. I used to pig out at home - well everywhere - but now my home is a safe place. I'm sure not perfect, but I am so, so much better. Remember your tummy is still healing - so you absolutely can not abuse it! Well you can - BUT YOU CAN'T because it could have very serious consequences. DO WHATEVER IT TAKES to care for your tummy!!! And keep reaching out for help. You can do it. If I can you can. I believe in you!!!!

Fill or no Fill-what should I do?

If you have insurance and only have to pay your co-pay, you should still go for a check in with your doctor, even if you don't have a fill. My surgeon has me come every 4 weeks, even without a fill, just to keep record of my weight loss and to monitor what is going on with me. Or, wait a week to be sure you won't need a fill soon. I've stretched a few of my appointments out to 6 weeks for that purpose... Remember that the purpose of the Lap-Band is to allow you to feel more full (less hungry) with less food. If you're losing 1-2 pounds a week consistently and aren't super hungry, then you're not in need of a fill. Many people expect to slime, PB, etc., but that isn't what should be happening....ONE thing to remember--you should be measuring your food. My doctor talks in terms of 1/2 cup to 1 cup of food per meal....not just calories! Congratulations on your weight loss! Sounds like you're doing great!
  9. So I have not really been one this site much over the last few months, but it was the place that got me started on this fantastic journey so a progress report is in order! One year ago today I have VSG. I would do it again in a heartbeat and recommend it for soooo many people out there with this struggle. It has not been the easiest thing ever, and I still have battles with overeating, food addictions, and lack of self control, but I have overall made changes that have literally turned my life into complete awesomeness. Seriously. I started with my consultation weighing 246 pounds, and today I weighed in at 145.5 pounds. Yep, 100 pounds in one year, which was a major goal for me and I was able to do it! I still have 20 pounds to go, but I am steadily still loosing small amounts of weights each month and I will get there. I cannot stress the impact if learning to love exercising enough. I joined a gym and found a way to not only keep me there, but now I am in a position to help others on their path by having become a cardio kickboxing instructor. If you told me a year ago this is where I would be today I would not have believed you or have trusted that VSG would work, or that I would have been able to retrain my brain to this extent. There is no replacement for a healthy body and mind, which has helped to literally make me a healthier soul. I love this community and cannot thank you guys enough for all the support over the last year, and hope you are all doing great with your own journeys and am here for anyone who needs help, advice, or just a listening ear! Now it's reward time, a long awaited treat, off to get my new tattoo!!

    Another fill today

Well I went to doctor today and lost only 3 lbs this past month. I have to start keeping tract again. Why do I fight keeping track of what I eat. I just hate measuring and weighting everything I eat. I want to do what normal people do, I want to eat a salad or soup or sandwich and not worry that I'm eating to much. At the rate I'm losing it will take years and years for me to lose all my weight. I have lost 4 lbs in the last 2 months. I have lost a total of 35.8 lbs since banding march 20. In 6 six months that is not very much. I know at least I didn't gain 35.8 lbs. Anyway the add another .5 cc in my band that brings me to 3.5 cc in my 4cc band. I hope I'm not to full. Of course I'm on liquid the next 48 hours. I have read on the threads that some doctors are not doing that now. I will not eat at least till tomorrow nite then just soft foods. Will see how I do with liquids. I had protien shake for lunch today, went down fine, just took me a hour to drink it. I would love to lose 10 lbs this next month. Maybe I should settle for 5 lbs a month and be happy.
  11. I am just over 6months post op, I have now had a total of 7 1/4cc put in to my band, will I ever get that full feeling? I can eat more than the 4 ozs they say you should eat. I had a fill on Tuesday, I went in to panic mode on Wed, thought maybe it was too full, so he took out, 1/2 cc, Now I am not sure where I am at. I definitely have to chew good or food sticks, but if I chew I can eat a lot. Is it possible I stretched my band? I have been patient and only lost 20#s which I lost in the first 2 months, nothing more, I just go up 2 and down 2 etc. Any suggestions:mellow:
  12. I am 5 and 1/2 months out from surgery and have noticed over the last week that the quantity of food I can consume has expanded. Not greatly and definitely nothing like pre-surgery. What I am able to consume now feels like an acceptable amount of food. I have also found that my hunger has returned and am eatting small meals a few more times a day (like 5 times a day now), before I barely wanted to eat 3 meals a day. However when i am hungry now I am looking for healthier alternatives, nuts, wholemeal crackers, fruit etc. I am still loosing weight and working out twice a day, my body is probably calling out for sustenance. Anyway, was just wondering when you all experienced/noticed a difference?
  13. I was banded over a year ago. I lost weight during the first 6 - 8 weeks following surgery. Then I played around with the same 5 lbs for the next 10 months even though I was receiving regular fills. With each fill, I kept thinking, "this will be the one that gives me that restriction I felt after surgery." But it didn't happen and I started losing faith in the band and in myself. I started to think, I've failed again. Then my surgeon told me he would give me a fill under fluoroscopy. This is how it worked. He filled the band completely under xray closing off the opening from my pouch to my stomach. I drank barium and it stayed in my pouch. He then began to slowly withdraw some of the fill, until the barium began to drain into my stomach, leaving the opening from the band at what he felt was good restriction. It's been 2 1/2 weeks since the fill under fluoroscopy and what a difference!!! I have restriction! THIS is what I expected from the band. I'm finally getting the help I wanted and needed from the band. I haven't weighed since the fill but I'm feeling the difference already in my body. My husband was holding me and said, "You're losing weight!" BUT .. over the past year, I developed some bad habits. I've had to go back and review and get my head on straight to work with the band again. I've gotten stuck several times, a couple of really bad ones with slimming and coughing. It hurts and works as a great reminder and reinforcer to do what is right. I really have to pay attention now and really slow down. I can't just eat whatever anymore and I can't eat nearly as much. I get full very quickly. I am now eating the recommended amount of food ... and very carefully. I'm a happy bandster .... at last!
  14. 32 pounds in 4 weeks - great job! Don't feel compelled to rush into that solid food thing, though!
  15. Just curious how most people viewed their meals. Pre-band I had a tendency to eat on the go. Many nights, now that my kids are grown, I'd fix dinner and we'd eat it in front of the tv. Now, I put out a decorative placemat, set a place setting and light the candles on the table. I bring all my food to the table and sit and 'dine'...whether it's Breakfast, lunch or dinner and even if it's just a Protein shake...and even if it's just me all by my lonesome. Eating has become an 'experience'. I love my Wood Wick candles because they have a flat wood wick that sounds like a crackling fire place when it burns. Very nice ambience.

    FIRST FIIILLLL!!!

Hey Ronnie, I definately can relate to feeling no restriction with my band currently and I get my first fill on Friday so i am anxious. Please keep us updated on how yours went on Thursday since it is the day before mine and I am a little nervous about the whole procedure of getting a fill. This week is my first week eating regular foods so i took a while to eat anything and have lost 20lbs without the restriction and I am praying for restriction as well to help shed more pounds. Well Good Luck and hopefully after this week we both will be happy with the restriction from the first fill! Happy Monday!

    FIRST FIIILLLL!!!

I know how you feel about food guilt. But I have to really put it in perspective because I know that I used to be able to eat 2-3 cups of mac and cheese and now my doctors diet says that I can have 1/2 cup of Pasta. So I eat my protien first and veg 1/2 cup. Then if I still want the mac and cheese I eat my half cup serving. But to be truthful because it takes me so long to eat the first two when I get to the mac and cheese I have so far had like three bites and I am full. Now if I didnt have it on my plate as an option then I would feel really deprived but this way I know it is there if i want it. I go for my first fill this morning. I wish you the best luck on your journey.

    "Comfortable" NOT "Full"?

I have that question too, although I suspect it is different for all of us. But I think as chronic overeaters, which is what brought us here, we don't know what full feels like, because we've never stopped at full, only overstuffed. I'm trying to get in touch with that full feeling, but I find I either stop before I feel what I would consider full, or I get this painful "rock" between my shoulder blades, which I imagine is overfull, band style. I'm still only eating like a custard cup of food at each meal, but I still have never felt what I would consider a reasonable "full." Any help from you experienced bandsters?
  19. So many positives from my surgery. My outlook on life, energy, and overall happiness and relationships are better. I just went for my 6 month checkup and my blood work has come back better than I ever imagined it would! Seriously, it hasn't been this good so many years. I am so thankful. Plus, I was sitting in an assembly last week and realized I could sit and cross my legs, forgot where I was and kept crossing one then the other! Had to tell my friend to look at what I could do after many years! Then we had the office party this weekend (where I had a great time as I sipped Water and had no food, I might add!) and when it came time to play LCR I sat at the table, noticed some were sharing chairs, so I said, "Hey someone can share my chair"! I couldn't have said that a couple of months ago. AND in less than 7 months, I am down 90 lbs! So yes, I am happy.......I am much more healthy day by day.........I have met amazingly supportive people on this site.........and I am thankful!

    Chewing Mushies?

I firmly believe that digestion starts in the mouth so even with mushies, I chewed the food. I sit my utensil down in between each bite, and chewed, chewed, chewed. Of course, I had most of this "learning curve" beat because with the band, I felt like I needed to chew Water. You really just have to mentally slow down. Count your bites if you have to so you can remember. Once you get to meats, you'll really notice a difference in chewing well, and half-assing it. When food goes down that isn't chewed up, it isn't pleasant, and you won't want to repeat it. It's just changing habits, and it does take time, but you can do it ! ! ! Plus, it's a not a forever thing. The only time I chew, chew, chew, chew now is when I want to fit extra food in. I take regular bites, and chew like a normal person.
  21. im about the same time out as you from surgery and feeling the same way. i feel disappointed with my self as well. thinking about it today i realize that our minds have to come in line with our stomach... lifetime habits are hard to give up... but with some perseverance they will go. How often are you having your meals? could you increase your ''solid'' pureed foods to perhaps slightly smaller meals but more often, say, at least four times a day? this is just off the top of my head right now. im hungry after a meal , like you. are you on meats yet?/ could you increase the amount of meat you are having? have some chick peas in with your veges as well?/ these are the same issues im grappling with right now. i have a book on handling post surgery and it does suggest to help alleviate hunger pains that we can have up to four even five smaller serves of solids a day. What do you all think?? is this viable?

    Is this weird?

Brandy - I don't feel food going through my band. My 10cc band was completely filled and then my doctor put in an extra .2 (for pressure he said). I was fine for about 6 weeks ... it was great because I finally felt the restriction that everyone was talking about .... then, I don't know why, but all of a sudden I couldn't keep any food down and had to have an unfill - my doctor took out 1.2 ccs and I gained back 5 pounds in two months. Yesterday he put a little fill back and I'm hoping the same thing doesn't happen again. You're probably already doing this, but for the tightness in your throat, maybe you have to eat a lot less at each sitting, but eat more often to make sure you get enough nutrition. My doctor told me that if you eat too much volume, it sits in your esophagus. Don't know if that's the case with you, but just thought I'd mention it as a possibility. I hope everything works out well for you.

    Bougie Size And Hunger

I'm not the expert on this, but there seems to be a lot of threads on it lately. From the other posts I've read and the pictures and stuff people have posted I have gathered this: - Bougie size is determined by the physician - It does not seem to be determined whether it affects hunger level (at least not the posts I've read), but looking at the pictures the difference in sizes is tiny, they are very close in size - Some people are probably hungry because of head hunger, emotions (boredom, etc), and acid reflux. I haven't had actual hunger since pre-op so I can't comment on it with my own experience, but I can tell you that head hunger keeps trying to break into my thoughts, so if I do end up feeling hungry before a few months out, that's probably what it would be. Eventually the other parts of your stomach can start to produce ghrelin, so it's not a permanent fix to hunger, you will eventually gain some hunger back. - If you are taller your stomach may be longer to begin with and could hold a little more food, but the amount your sleeve ends up holding a few months post-op varies from person to person and can be anywhere from 1/4 cup to about 1 cup (and maybe a little more for some people) - not enough that you will be able to completely go off the deep end without stretching it or eating tons of sliders Hope that helps!

    anybuddy out there?

i agree, not normal for most of us. I was on a very strict post op diet. The point isn't to see what you CAN eat but what you are supposed to be eating right now! You can rip your stitches loose and hurt yourself internally. IF your doc said you could eat real food (solid etc) already, you are one in a very few allowed such a progression.

    Need Some Advise

I have a 14cc band. I had my surgery in November and I have had 3 fills. The last fill put me at 9cc's. Since my last fill I can not eat much more than 1/4 cup of food at a time. Some days I can eat more but other days I barely eat anything. Some days I struggle to drink Water. I PB a lot...not everyday but a lot. I also have horrible heartburn. My question is do you think my band is too tight? I am considering having a little bit taken out. Is 1/4 cup of food normal? I eat good healthy food but just not much. I've lost 54lbs and I'm afraid that if I have it loosened I will stop losing. Any advise is appreciated
