    Gallstones

At the beginning of October I ended up having my gallbladder removed a week before my sleeve. Similar situation, I had the worst pain on the right side of my chest and felt like someone was stabbing me in the back between my shoulder blades. I had been ignoring it all week bc I knew I had wls coming up and thought it was just gas. I ended up waking my boyfriend up in the middle of the night to drive me to urgent care. I was jaundiced and ended up in the hospital for 5 days and 2 procedures later, (ERCP to clean a duct into my stomach first) I had my gallbladder out then my sleeve one week later to the day on October 12th. I'm feeling so much better though, I kinda wish my gallbladder would have cooperated so I didn't have to have 2 surgeries.
  2. Feeling great is one thing but u need to understand ur stomach is not heeled just think of it like a new born baby they only have fluids bc they're stomached can't handle anything but fluids. If a baby was to have a piece of chewed food they can choke bc it can slide down and choke them if this slides down it can cause severe damage even though u feel great ur tummy isn't healed so please watch doing this. Also it could cause eating disorders if U get used to that satisfying your appetite. You could potentially being doing more harm then anything. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  3. Hi! I just had the surgery on November 1st. Good luck to you this month! This will be tough bc my family always gathers to eat. That's how we Celebrate and mourn. Not easy, but I will follow my diet to the letter. I am also going to 2 post op groups this week. I think I need all the support I can gather. Good luck, friends! When everyone else is drinking

You can't drink? A lot of my friends (were in our 20,s) who have had the sleeve do drink they don't drink as much bc apparently they get drunk fast. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    When everyone else is drinking

Sometimes I'd do water w lime in a low ball glass so it looks like vodka soda. I like the cranberry juice idea too, anything pink is assumed to be a cape cod! Honest I don't think it's that people care if you drink alcohol per say, it's as long as you have any drink you're ok....culturally, we feel like bad hostesses if someone doesn't have food or a drink bc we associate it w comfort. We want people around us comfortable especially when hosting a party. I'm likely skipping most parties this hear anyway, as I was just sleeved 11/4, but this is a great topic.
  7. May I ask what insurance you have? Bc that's awesome. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  8. Shelly has a pot roast recipe. It's great bc it will feed your family dinner, but you can take broth and whizz it up. I put it on top of mashed up potatoes, and it just looked like shepards pie. I don't eat potatoes now, but that saved me in purees. Great flavor.
  9. I started at 248 pre op, I am 11 days post op. I feel like I have hardly ate but I have am down to 237 and I don't know what to do to intake Protein. I have had a mix I guess if soft foods bc I thought yogurt was more te liquid but I have had egg drop Soup, my stomach took it well. My concern is if I can squat. I don't want to loose my bum and I feel the weight I have lost is my bum and my face cheeks any recommendation would be awesome Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Sleevers who wish they had bybass

I originally wanted and was approved for bypass but withdrew Got scared At my weight, bypass was best vut when I returned the surgeon really got to see the severity of my health issues...some weight related some not and felt the sleeve was better bc of my need for steroids at times and psych meds as well as narcotics which all don't process well with bypass so you really have to consider your health history and potential for health issues. The sleeve is showing nearly equal success anyways but if you have s High BMI it's just s little more challenging to lose a lot of weight with it as compared to the bypass
  11. I had seven days of liquid diet and it was hard hard hard but I lost 20 pounds bc if it. I was in the hospital two days but I have multiple health issues so they were being very cautious however after it all occurred, I'm super glad I was in for two days bc they prevented blood clots for me and I could properly rest and not worry about walking and movement to prevent clots.xakso they gave me antibiotics for a day and IV pain meds and fluids so I wasn't forced to drink tons on my own right after surgery where nausea is common. The gas pain was severe and I walked three times to help it but if I had been home trying to get up and down for the potty etc man, tough. I think it's better to stay overnight at least.. I have known some people to do so well they leave the same day but after experiencing it, I wouldn't suggest it Overall though, it's not that bad... this is a great place for support... good fortune
  12. very well said !!! Some people just don't realize you are given a plan for a reason they think bc they can tolerate well let's try it bodybjustbwent through a lot and as a nurse I'm just amazed that people don't sit back and think about everything they're stomach has just gone through. And honestly if my doctors or NUT did not go over the post op plans I would NOT have had my surgery through them my doctors office explained everything a few times and also told me no matter what questions I have to not hesitate in calling them!!! I would not have gone through with a plan that I was so unsure of the stages afterwards let alone wasn't given instructional information on. Did you have any type of nutrition classes? Or booklets given to you I was given packets several of them two books and a folder of papers all which explains step by step and not only was I given them but we went over them one on one page by page for 6 months!!! I'm just baffled by this. I would definitely not touch anything but liquids tho till you get in contact with someone and maybe look for a different surgeon for after care that can explain more if they didn't go over any of that info Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App This is a good point that I didn't even think of. I wonder if OP had a pre op nutrition class. That's also where I got my paperwork on post op plan.

    How do a choose a surgeon ?

four ducklings wow! Most surgeons who are accredited have awesome stats. Complications can always happen of course but obesity can kill you too. So can driving a car...or crossing a street.. . I guess surgery just puts it in our faces because it's new territory for many of us, you sign your life away on forms and everyone tells you horrible stories! I've had general anesthesia anniversary if times and many procedures and a couple if surgeries. It's always a bit scary but I do remind myself if what I started out saying... obesity comorbidities are deadly, and life activities can kill you too so that might help you too I did ask my surgeon how many patients he has lost on the table and it was zero in many years and a small handful from drastic complications like pulmonary embolism often bc people feel symptoms and don't seem medical attention until it's too late! They do a lot to prevent clots, infection, etc these days...

I got past the hungry stage, THANK GOD

I would ask your nut about this bc my plan includes everything from liquids to purees. I can't imagine what would be wrong with sugar free jello . I can't eat it but I can make my own with plain gellitain , stevia and true lime or lemon!! I haven't tried to yet but plan to! Anyways, if you love jello and it's not on the menu, definitely ask!

I got past the hungry stage, THANK GOD

Man I'm glad to read this, I just hit puree stage and I've been hungry all of the time too. Even at this stage, it's fortunately improving but not satisfactory. I eat a scrambled egg in the morning and I'm stuffed before finishing it but in one hour, I. Easy for food. If I eat Soup, I can also eat a yogurt.. or if I eat s tuns pouch. I need something else too like cottage cheese and then I freak out thinking omg, I'm eating to much food. The scale isn't moving bc I'm eating to much. When I walk around for exercise. Omg I'm hungry... I think it's the lack of carbs I'm not used to?? And yet not enough Protein bc not at the stage yet So far, I can eat anything too ...not helping! St night i feel hungry and maybe it's emotionally driven buy i feel my stomach... I often have a yogurt Popsicles are my lifesaver!! Anyways. I was thinking of posting about this but worried about being judged so I feel relieved to have discovered this thread

    I survived!

Awesome thank you so much for the tip!! I am a bit hungry now/nauseous bc I'm only on ice chips. I'm sure that icky hunger feeling will go away this am when I can drink. My shoulder much better than yesterday but still sore. I asked for zofran bc my swallow study scheduled for 0700 I don't want to get sick. I also got toradol around the clock (like iv Motrin), it's helping now w my sore neck but when I had severe shoulder pain only dilaudid helped. I'll prob go home today, my only fear is being able to keep down pain meds if I need them. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    I survived!

Congratulations!! The gas pain was the worst for me and I felt it in my chest and under my ribs!! Walking helped loads and pain meds.!! Once I got to full liquids I got lots of liquid savory Soups like tomato red pepper, carrot ginger, creamy corn and roasted red peppers, butternut squash, etc mostly the imagine brand bc they are low to non fat and taste great. I added fage Greek plain yogurt for more Protein and creaminess. Some ppl cant handle thickness early on but if you can, those are sone of my suggestions. Happy recovering

Hate sugar free stuff. What do I do?

yes, I'm aware that the pancreas still produces insulin in reaction to anything sugar or sugar like. I was merely responding to the posters response that they were using stevia but stopped bc they didn't want anything artificial or fake ... And, for me since I'm also allergic to artificial sweeteners, I'm pleased to have Protein powder flavors sweetened with stevia for variety. So far, tge unflavored Isopure experience is nasty! Also, stevia is so potent, you need very small amounts of it so that is probably a positive thing but that's just a opinion not necessarily a fact lol The problem with this logic is that simply coming from a plant and thus not being artificial doesn't necessarily mean we should be filling up on it. Sugar comes from a plant, too. Splenda is simply a modified sucrose molecule, thus it is technically plant based as well. Cocaine is made from cocoa leaves, heroin is made from poppy seeds and alcohol will form in the bottom of your trash can if it's left out long enough with any plant based material in it. Eating sweet foods, regardless of how abd whybthey are sweet causes cravings for sweet foods. Diet Coke contains no sugar, yet it promotes a response from your pancreas similar to regular Coke. Your brain perceives sweetness and prepares for an onslaught of sugar, even if there is none.

Hate sugar free stuff. What do I do?

although the poster said hating, it seemed like to me, they are allergic to artificial sweeteners or get adverse reactions from them like me.... I was concerned about this as well before my surgery bc the pre op diet, I ended up in urgent care after repeated episodes of diarrhea and vomiting which was linked to the intake of splenda and truvia. The only thing I don't have issue with is stevia bc it's not artificial but its a sweetener so it works out for getting my protein powder!
  21. Oh believe me, I get it! I'm a breast cancer survivor, diagnosed March 2014. I had 14 major surgeries in 18 mo. Bilateral mastectomy is brutal. My last reconstructive surgery was in December. I actually think all of that made my decision for this surgery a bit easier to make. "surgery" and "anesthesia" are nothing to me, and post-op pain, recovering from anesthesia, is now something I'm used to. I know what pain meds work for me and what don't. Your story and mine are similar. I'm also 5'4, and my current weight is 209. Pre-cancer was 175. Have you had your joints checked for arthritis? I injured my foot last spring and discovered my feet are full of chemo-induced arthritis. Since then I've found my back, my hands, even my JAW are full of arthritis!! By the end of the day my body hurts so bad. Last night my feet were the worst. But, it is what it is. I know I can't move enough to get rid of this weight with just exercise. My cancer was estrogen-fed, with a very high risk of recurrence. I need to get rid of all sources of estrogen including fat that produces a small amount of estrogen. So here I am!!! After 7 months of meeting all the insurance requirements, I will see the doctor next week to schedule my surgery date. Hoping for the first week of December!

Hate sugar free stuff. What do I do?

I m allergic to aspartame and I can hardly manage sucralose...I tried truvia which is stevia combined with a sugar alcohol and it had me vomiting with diarrhea! I use stevia but have to experiment with brands bc dome taste to bitter. I absolutely love love love g6 sport vanilla Protein powder made with stevia. It's so yummy. Expensive though I just got Isopure unflavored protein whey isolate and tried it in some tomato red pepper soup..it's supposed to go in hot or cold buy it thickened the soup and I could taste it and it was nasty like glue. That being said, I also had a migraine earlier and they always warp my taste buds soo we will see. Umm, there are other good protein powders made with stevia too and I saw plastic fruit cups with stevia There's also blue agave nectar but not sure how bariatric friendly that is.its low in glycemic index and diabetes friendly though. There are many products that are low in sugar enough to meet the standards of the barriatric diet . you can also use true lemon and true lime packets for making popsicles, Jello with Knox plain gellitain and stevia, and whatever else. You can drink all kinds of teas too So obviously yiur best bet is stevia...it comes in various flavors too. I've been told that the one by nu naturals stevia with a purple label is really good. Morr and more products are using stevia and you can try truvia but again the sugar alcohol might get you if you're anything like me. Outshine popsicles sale no sugar added popsicles with one gram of sugar, and a gram of splenda. Those don't make me sick but I can also handle one premier Protein shake a day or every few days. Just not multiple, then I get stomach pain, cramps, foul taste, diarrhea.... I feel ya!!! In my Instagram, one of the diabetes community things I belong to claims they have a new sweetener alternative that isn't fake called WeLuvYa sweetener or something like that.mmi have not checked this out yet but maybe you will want to. Good fortune
  23. The job question @@LipstickLady poses is a good one. I swear my previous job did not help me to maintain a healthy weight. When i started there i was overweight but not obese. 25 years of crazy hours, travel and the most massive stress I have ever experienced but I kept telling myself that it was worth it because the pay was incredible and I like the work itself when it wasn't a bunch of political BS. Well, just a few months before my surgery I got laid off after all of those years. You would think that would have made the stress worse? NO....it was like a great weight was lifted off my shoulders. I will never put myself in the place of dealing with that much stress ever again. I feel like I missed my children growing up because I was always traveling and out of the state and sometimes the country. Now they are both grown and have children of their own. I missed out...... What is worse I believe that job actually made me physically sick and broke my body, mind and even spirit. As much as I miss that level of income I am thrilled that I got the hell out of there and can manage my stress 1000 times better. For me, those crazy hours and political BS just was not worth it. If I had to do it over again, I likely would have quit when things got crazy. The company didnt appreciate it anyway, they looked at those of us who stayed and said, geez....we pay you too much money so you are now laid off. Glad they did though because I could not see it while I was living in it....now I know. Best of luck to you!
  24. I'm kind of over trying to help any more of the posts along the "I ate something really fatty/sugary/solids" or "Gee, is smoking really bad?" variety. So much anger and pissy responses because I didn't pat them on the head and tell them it was just fine and no, you special little snowflake you, it isn't a bad idea to do whatever the hell you want just cause you are craving it or uncomfortable denying yourself. SMDH. I had surgery to be healthy, which included me admitting that I ignored or tried to downplay the stupid @#! I did, and putting an end to all of it (overeating, binging, poor eating habits in general, lack of good exercise/smoking). This was the most difficult thing I think I've ever done in my life, but I did it and it seems like the dumbest thing I would ever do if I were to go back to any of those habits and destroy everything I've worked so, so hard to accomplish. I guess a portion of folks out there are would rather live with their delusions and pretend their poor habits won't result in regain/sickness/addictions. Just have to realize that some people are violently in denial about how messed up they are and don't want real help - just a magic potion or something that will let them continue their unhealthy habits without consequences. I do admire y'all that still fight to cut through the BS if only to keep the misinformation down for the ones that read here and don't post. I just don't have it in me any more.

    Seriously?

I guess I grew up in the same culture. I was once grounded for 2 weeks for lying Ronny nother's face about a phone call. When I left the room, she *69ed that thing immediately and it was game over. I was held to high standard regarding honesty and integrity, and no one at home ever cut me any slack. A lot of people don't like me because I refuse to butter their behinds. I state my opinions openly and honestly, and if I don't know what I'm talking about I admit it freely. In return, I hold others to a high standard. I don't ask for advice unless I really want it. If my doctor, lawyer, friend or family fed me a bunch of vague platitudes when I asked for their opinions I would be pissed. If I wasn't ready to hear the truth, I would not ask for it.
