  1. Thanks everyone for your input. I think I am just reading about complications of ulcers etc. and getting a little freaked out. Then I read success stories and I'm ready for it tomorrow.
  2. It certainly is reversible. The Sleeve is not. However Bypass reversals do not happen often due to how complicated they are. They are typically only done if there are major issues with a patient. Sleeve folks can get dumping as well... and Bypass folks don't all get dumping. You are still healing. You need to focus on that right now. For the "weakness" are you following your post-op diet? What does your daily water intake look like? Whats your daily protein intake look like? Have you discussed your issues with your PCP / Surgical Team / Nutritionist? If not... Why not? I'm coming up on 9 months post-op Band to Bypass revision. The first 2 months were tough. I had lots of times when I could have given into the emotions that were running rampant. But, it gets better. You just need to really focus on doing what you are supposed to be doing, consuming what you are supposed to be consuming and working with your doctors. I couldn't be happier with my Bypass now.
  3. I have had a number of complications including cdiff after surgery so I am behind on the food progression. Cottage cheese didn’t work well and the only thing I can stomach the thought of is yogurt. I have tried tuna, canned chicken, and gauc. Pre-surgery I would have gladly eaten it all but post-surgery it all grosses me out. Does this pass? Do I need to force myself to eat stuff so I can get past it. I can also no longer handle anything sweet. And the protein drinks aren’t working very well for me. Any suggestions?

    Hard time

Whenever you feel discouraged by believing your weightloss is not as much as you think it should be, try to put it in perspective. Prior to this, have you ever lost 70lbs in 6 months? That's over 10lbs a month. That is phenomenal. YES some people lose weight faster. But also many lose weight slower. I think many people have unrealistic expectations on how quickly they will lose the weight. Remember, this decision has you 70lbs closer to a normal weight range, 70lbs closer to being healthy, and 70lbs safer from obesity complications. There is no negative feelings or disappointment to be had in that.
  5. Hey, all, After years and years of putting off surgery, I finally underwent a gastric bypass procedure on November 6 of this year. On one hand, I was pleasantly surprised that I really did not suffer any significant pain or complications, etc. However, since I have been feeling well (and perhaps overly confident), over the past few days, there were a few instances when I inadvertently drank my few protein shakes too fast (which were made with a mixed base of water, skim milk, Isopure, and half a banana (which my NUT has approved), to the point where I felt a tinge of discomfort. Moreover, I admit that I was being rather foolish because I did not really measure the amount of liquid that I put into the blender before downing the shake (I imagine close to about 10 -11 oz?). Too much, I know. Although I would not say that I was in pain, I am now incredibly worried that I have already messed up my surgery and stretched out my stoma. I have already promised myself that from now on, I will measure everything that I consume, but I am concerned that the damage has been done, so to speak. Does anyone have any advice (like a pouch reset)? Has anyone experienced something similar? Am I being overly paranoid? :( Thank you all in advance, V.V.

    OCTOBER SLEEVERS CHECK IN HERE

I was sleeved on 10/30/18, had some respiratory complications, aside from that, the surgery was a walk in the park. I’m 4 weeks post-op today and lost 17 lbs since surgery and 27 lbs since pre-op diet. I feel I need to exercise more frequently as I hit a 10-day stall now and don’t know what to do. I am having 700-800 calories a day and 70-80 grans of protein, drink 64 oz of water but my exercise routine is very unpredictable: there are weeks I work out most of the days and others I don’t...losing motivation and that can’t happen...how do you guys keep motivated and a positive mindset?

Thanks. I'll double check with my doctor because I had of postop respiratory complications, but guess I should be fine.

Two Years Out and Major Weight Regain

@Danny Paul It's a sobering reality that any of us can gain weight. I hope anyone who has a large gain can overcome and get a treatment plan that works for them. (Revision, diet or other) Many reasons for regain. Medical issues, medications, diet, complications, hormones, mobility issues......The list goes on. You are right, Surgery alone will not make your weight loss successful. The work does not end after goal.

    Contemplating ESG

There is a facebood group for USA ESG its called: Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Support Group USA, its fairly active if you do not get sufficient responses here. I am in the early stages of my ESG, just started normal foods at one cup volume three times a day. My recovery was pretty good, had intermittent cramps for three days/two nights only. My diet hasn't been perfect, but my results you can see on the left there. Some people on the three ESG facebook groups I belong have regretted their ESG...they say they do feel any restriction and/or have put on weight, others have had great success some losing over 40kilos. While results vary due to the individual, I also think its due to the skill of the doctor/surgeon...best to ask how many ESGs they have undertaken, what the average weight loss is for their patients, how many failures/complications their patients have experienced. What post op support programs they have in place. The skill is needed to judge where the sutures go and how many to sutures to insert so as they give proper restriction and have the best chance for endurability.

    Bougie size

But there are several studies showing optimal size to be 34-35 French. Less than that, could give you tighter control but also increased risk of complication or dehisance, and nobody desires that!
  11. MarinaGirl

    Bougie size

The following study (dated March 2016) showed that there was no difference in %EWL after 1 year for patients with 32-Fr bougie versus 40-Fr bougie. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy for morbid obesity: does bougie size matter Conclusion: LSG is a safe and effective operation for treatment of morbid obesity and obesity-related comorbidities with significant short-term weight loss and an acceptable complication rate. Bougie size does not affect short-term outcomes. We need to extend our study to determine the effect of the bougie size on the long-term outcomes. Note that the optimal size of the bougie remains controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the first year outcome of LSG using two different sizes of bougies.

Scheduled for Lap Band - Success vs Regret?

This is a very good point! Every story is different and people come here having lap band meltdowns without giving the whole picture. Were they banded properly? Did they have good follow up care? Did they follow their doctors instructions? Did they have the older problematic band put it? There are many factors that can cause lap band complications, so please just realize that it's best to take these posts with a grain of salt and realize that their situation is not necessarily "proof" that "you made a mistake" Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. I am looking for some input from people who have fibromyalgia and have had a gastric sleeve surgery. I am having my surgery on 12/20/18. I have pretty bad fibromyalgia and my surgeon told me I may have a rougher time than most people. I am scared to death that I will have complications or be in so much pain. I have had a hysterectomy and a back surgery and did very well with both of those from a pain and recovery standpoint but I was a lot younger then.
  14. I am a Physical Therapist in the ICU and I feel the same way. My surgery is scheduled for 12/17 and I think being in healthcare is a blessing and a curse. I am terrified of complications but I do know several ICU nurses that have had huge success with this surgery. Looks like we are close in time frame and I will be watching to see how you are doing!! Best of luck!!

    November 2018 Sleevers!?!?

Hi fellow 6ther! I’m doing very well! My incisions are all healing perfectly, I’m pain-free (with the exception of occasional sharp pains when bending over), and I’ve had no complications thus far. No nausea, thank goodness! I’m tolerating puréed foods well, can never eat more than 3-4oz at a time, usually not that much. I am still drinking one protein shake a day to help get my protein in. I can drink liquids normally now so have no issue staying hydrated. Like you, I rarely feel hungry and usually eat something just bc I know I am supposed to. Overall, I’m very pleased!

    Too fat for a bypass

I'm 5'5, and my surgery weight was 409, so I fell into the super obese category. I was actually 440 at the start of the program. I had RNY done via laparoscopic surgery and I've had no issues or complications.

    November 2018 Sleevers!?!?

Pain, almost non-existent. Tomkitten , my son and heir to my minute fortune, who stayed with me states they did put it in my IV, they kept ahead of it so well I didn't have to ask for it. He says it was a blessing we didn't have visitors, I kept lifting my gown and. gazing at my tum-tum. Not blown up, if I had been they pumped it off before I left, the OR. No gas to walk off, although they kept me on IVs and EKG monitors and I basically,on "room arrest". maybe to lessen the likelihood of falling?,I had to ask for very little. Never did have what consitutes a meal, no jello, no broth, they kept me well supplied with liquids. And although I did take my cpap, I forgot one piece,of tubing, try as they may respiratory couldn't fing a matching piece so that might be why I stayed on 02 as well. But never uncomfortable, had 7 incisions, all criss-crossed with Sheri-strips except the one in my navel. 2 small, one a little bigger on the right, bypassers big one on right, that's where the staplers and equipment that counts goes in, deeper, if anyone is sorer that's it, last to heal. 1 at the bottom of my sternum , between my boobs. 2 on the left and the 1 in my navel. I had a tubal ligation scar in the bottom,of my navel so Dr Needleman put his in the top. While it was still swollen it looked like they were missing. And if you are a sleever, your big deep incision is on the left, it's where they pull your stomach remnant across and out to throw it away. In theory, bypaaers can be reconnected although they seldom are . Only one,i know of currently is @ronnysgal, she had much complications and it was done to restore her health, she was a very very special case. So yes, it is possible just not probable. Takes super super-skill to rejoin it all, few surgeons will attempt it. Actually I have much more pain now with my 5 ulcers and stomal stricture than I ever did in early recovery, but Dr Noria swears it is repairable. Getting tired of going every 2 weeks for my EGJ endoscopy but each time I hope it will be the last. Dates so far 10/12.10/26.11/09 and next Wednesday 11/28. because Dr Noria took a little Thanksgiving holiday. So if you have prayers or Good Wishes to spare, send them my way!

    Too fat for a bypass

I've made a new friend on this forum. He currently has a BMI of 63. Apparently, there isn't even a term to classify his size. I found somewhere that Super Morbidly Obese is for a BMI of 50 or so. Anyway, this new friend has a great sense of humor so I know he can appreciate his dilemma of being medically nameless. But I digress... After meeting with his nutritionist and surgeon recently (since he was still trying to decide sleeve vs bypass) his size pretty much decided for him. I found out why below: "A BMI of 60 or above is categorized as super morbid obesity. A laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in these patients is technically very difficult due to the size of the abdominal wall, the size of the intra-abdominal fat and the size of the liver. Due to these technical aspects of the procedure, the risk of leak and other complications are increased. I think that a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is a much better procedure in higher risk super morbidly obese patients. It is a technically easier operation than a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and has a much lower complication rate for this patient population. The sleeve gastrectomy can also be the first stage in a two-stage procedure. Once the patient has lost a significant amount of weight, and if he/she is still morbidly obese, it is safer to then convert the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy into a gastric bypass or a duodenal switch. The sleeve gastrectomy started as a procedure for high-risk patients but is now used as a primary procedure for lower BMI patients as well."

    Post op nausea

Hi - I had gastric sleeve surgery approximately 2 weeks ago. I did very well after surgery, no complications, no pain. I have been tolerating clear fluids well; however, the past several days I have been very nauseated to the point that I can't really stand to drink protein shakes or anything else. I can tolerate the shakes and even some yogurt, but the thought of food repulses and nauseates me. I have not experienced vomiting, just nausea. Did anyone else experience this? All I read is how everyone else is doing great...is this just my experience?? Zofran is not helping with the nausea.

    Not full and very hungry

Hi there, I am almost a month after bypass surgery, started more or less eating all food, never been on protein shakes just baby food and yoghurts like skyr with more proteins... sometimes i do feel hungry, sometimes I don’t... I did have complications with internal bleeding a few days after I came back home so now have few stuff low down, I obviously suffered with high blood pressure before my surgery now I am 22kg lighter and my blood pressure is good but pulse is very low for whatever reason... anyway It is all very new and strange... even though I am trying already most of “normal” food it feels strange when noone knows or understands so hopefully I can find someone who had op at similar time or before me?)
  22. Right.... let me join you people, I had my surgery on 23rd of October... lost 22kg since... I don’t know wether I am the only one or what but at the moment thinking more of a how to become stronger and so on instead of loosing more... maybe coz I had some messups... complications to be exact... internal bleeding, few collapses, so for first two weeks survived only on Water and drips, then third week baby food and Protein yoghurt (skyr), now already started more solid foods and some raw fruits and veggies... so no Protein Shakes whatsoever... now more or less try everything... I don’t know wether it is right or wrong but this is how I do... twice had light dumping syndrome - once from baby porridge or something that my doctor thought might work for me as it was for sensitive babies but apparently I am not one of them lol and once from something else that I won’t remember but both were just a bit sweating and heart beat raised... nothing else... so I consider myself quite lucky there... potassium level went significantly down so they say this is why I am so weak??? Is anyone else having this? Due to that internal bleeding earlier on I am not allowed any physical activity yet... can’t wait until I will ... does anyone else feels no energy? Have youbsterted on normal food? Or am I running too fast forward??? So strange when you have noone to chat? Thanks anyway I hope everyone will get where they aiming to

    October 2018 Sleevers

You lost 50 pounds in less than a month?! Kudos to you! Sorry that you had to go through a lot of complications, hope you’re feeling better now. I started on soft food but ate some solid with some sort of sauce on it and it’s been fine. I felt very tired the first few days due to lack of water, but now I am doing everything I’m supposed to with no problem. I did have some trouble with mashed potatoes that got me sweaty and feeling like I had a ball in my tummy almost threw up, other than that fine. I do feel hungry even though the doctor said I wouldn’t 🤷‍♀️ I was sleeved on 10/30 and have lost 17 pounds since.
