    7 weeks in-Stall/gaining weight

Surgeons vary so much! I couldn't survive on 900 calories a day at 8 months out. I eat about 1200-1500 calories a day, and about 80-120 g of carbs, 70-90g protein, and 45-55g fat. Fluid I don't track but my pee is very light in color. I'm still losing weight well. I've discussed with the nutritionist from the surgery center and they are very happy with my progress and what I'm eating.
  2. In the past on diets, I always lost well when I was eating within an hour of waking up and then every 3 hours after. I never ate more than about 100-120 calories for all but one of those times which would be a bigger serving of protein and vegetables and was around 300 calories. Roughly 800-900 calories. I lost a lot (120 pounds) eating like that; however, I regained once I went back to eating normally. I'm still pre-op, but my surgeon has given me the following criteria for once I return to normal foods: Calories: 700-900 Net Carbs: 30 or Less Protein: 70-90 grams Water/Fluid Intake: 64-80 oz. **Daily Goals will remain the same the first 12-18 months or until you reach your goal, then you will adjust it accordingly.
  3. Hi I am 7 weeks in after gastric sleeve- Till the week I started eating solid food at 5 weeks I was losing between 0.5 to 1 pound a day Then it started getting lower till it stalled 10 days ago and I actually gained 2 pounds over the last 10 days - I had taken water pills a couple of times as I noticed swelling around my ankles so I am not sure if the gain back is a result of that My calories intake are between 900 and 1100- Carbs are low- I do more proteins as needed- drink water sometimes 64 ounce sometimes 60 ounces- I workout 3 times/ week now I walk every day I also do intermittent fast 13/11 everyday I am getting very frustrated almost regretting the decision of the surgery as I historically lost more weight on diets the problem was that I always regained the weight I lost 35 pounds since I started and 28 pounds since the day of the surgery Any thoughts? Thank you

    Uber Hungry

If you're only eating 950 calories but you're lifting weights and doing treadmill, it's likely you need to eat more. Or, make sure the food you are eating during the day is high quality and likely to keep you full - protein, fiber, and fat. As long as you're in a calorie deficit, you will lose weight, though the rate varies and there are always stalls, no matter how few calories you eat... and if you eat too few calories, you may slow down your weight loss. The other thing to consider is drinking things like coffee/tea that have caffeine which can reduce hunger. Or milk, which can help you feel full. Raw non-starchy veggies could be a good option when you just want to munch on something.

    Uber Hungry

Hi, I've started weight training (I'm not doing cardio other than normal daily activities). I find that my hunger in the evenings after working out is more than on nights I don't workout but not too much so. I have been drinking a protein shake on my way home from the gym or right when I get home. I then try to eat something light but filling - like veggies or a salad or even a cup or 2 of jello. The real secret is that I keep drinking my crystal light over ice until I go to bed as a way to keep my tummy full but my calories now. I'm also taking rest days about every other day or so - a few times I worked out multiple days in a row and I have found that just wipes me out.
  6. Hi. I had surgery on 21-March. I was on my treadmill 3 days later, walking slowly but am back up to jogging or walking fast depending on daily motivation. I was cleared on Monday to start lifting weights (light <25lbs for the next two weeks and then I can increase) again, which I started, also on Monday. I feel great, but oh boy am I hungry - which I was expecting. I'm eating about 950 calories a day, but I'd be lying if I said my stomach isn't growling at days end and when I wake up. I eat 6 small meals a day, protein is around 80g/day and I drink about 100-110 oz of water daily. I am seriously scared to bump my calories to support the weight training. Has anyone begun weight training early on with their cardio? If so, how did you combat the hunger? My nutritionist said to increase my calories by 200 and I want to but I'm seriously so nervous I'm going to stall. I'm down 30ish pounds and have another 50 to go...

My hell week starts tomorrow (April 26th)

I agree…this experience and others in the past when I’ve done MediFast, day 3 seems easier than the first 2 days. I think that is partly because carbohydrates make one want MORE carbohydrates. Eliminate the carbs, and I find that much if not all of my hunger goes away. Today is day 3 for me. 2 shakes and a small leafy green salad with some protein. A Greek yogurt if I need a snack. I’m way under 1000 calories. And I’m fine. I’ve dropped 1/2 lb…I know I am a slow loser. But my students today were telling me that I look like I am losing weight. 🤷🏻‍♀️ what can I say?

Calories per day - 2 months post op?

I wasn’t given a calorie goal either just portion sizes. Many aren’t given calorie goals & those who do get a variety of calorie goals. I know I wasn’t consuming many (around 400+/-) cause I did random checks out of curiosity. Got my protein in & a little vegetable at night & I was done. No room for anything else so I would never have met those high calorie goals some are given. Sometimes we need little more structure & guidance so I would check with your dietician to see what they recommend. Then treat it as a guide not a hard & fast rule. The protein & fluid goals are the most important.
  9. I made this salad earlier this afternoon, (311 calories), but then decided i didn’t feel like eating it so put it back in the fridge. Then Mr. grilled up some steaks a couple hours later, so of course preferred to eat that instead, so the salad is gonna stay in the fridge for tomorrow! Rib-eye, roasted potatoes and sautéed portobello mushrooms: 402 calories for the plate/saucer. OmG the steak was so good, i gave it the all-Canadian try, but this is as far as I could get. I already know someone is going to eat it, so im gonna adjust the MFP entry for the steak later. THE (uneaten) SALAD: THE (partially eaten) STEAK:

Calories per day - 2 months post op?

By 2 months I was almost able to consistently eat to plan, which was 3 meals per day consisting of 3oz protein + 1oz veggies. I have no clue on calories then or now. Good luck, Tek

Trying to eat more veggies- 3 months post op

I am about 8 weeks out and have been eating salads (chopped small) for a couple weeks now. I have only had one incident where I threw up after eating salad (and that was gross) but otherwise no issues. It's really the only food I am eating as I'm still taking in protein via drinks. Salads (lettuce, onion, cucumber, bell pepper, chickpeas, bulgur wheat, tomato, etc.), quest chips, jello cups, and protein drinks are that which sustain me as of late. Also worth noting: I buy the red or green head lettuce, it is softer than romaine or iceberg lettuce. Also, I dilute the sesame dressing with vinegar to make it stretch and reduce the calories.

Calories per day - 2 months post op?

Yep, i agree (for me). I didn’t get to 1200 calories per day until about 3-4 months into maintenance (which translates to about 10-11 months post op) P.S. to keep things in perspective, I’m barely 5’2”

Calories per day - 2 months post op?

Wow...1200 seems like a lot. Not sure I could eat that many calories without eating unhealthy stuff or grazing all day at this point. Not enough room.

Calories per day - 2 months post op?

Thank you @Tony B - NJ @ShoppGirl @lizonaplane @FutureSylph and @acopas! My calories range from about 650-950. The higher days are where I made some poorer choices for snacks like pretzel thins and regular fat cheese. I think I will aim for about 750. I do get in all my protein and all my water. @FutureSylph we are literally surgery twins...same surgery date and type, same height, just about same starting weight.

Calories per day - 2 months post op?

I'm still in pre-op stage, but the guidelines for return to normal food that they've given me are: REGULAR FOODS | DAILY GOALS Calories: 700-900 Net Carbs: 30 or Less Protein: 70-90 grams Water/Fluid Intake: 64-80 oz.

    So fed up

If it makes you feel any better, I am currently in a 4 week stall. I'm staying in the right calorie range (that has worked for me and my program espouses), am exercising, and basically doing everything right but I have been just hanging out in the same 2 lbs range the whole time, just shy of my 100 lb loss milestone. So. Frustrating. Just hang in there and keep doing what you know is right and has been successful. Maybe change something up to see if shocks your system a bit, but don't go overboard. This is all a complete head game. Your body will do what it wants... when it wants. I've found looking at other success measures (measurements, non-scale victories) can really help me get through these times. I feel your pain and totally empathize.

    So fed up

Oh my God I hope that’s not the case for me! 10 and a half grand I paid for this surgery, I’d be mortified if I found out my surgeon did my sleeve purposely large!! I think if I was seeing the scale move the calorie amount wouldn’t bother me, but because I’ve seen no movement in 2 weeks it’s getting me down but I’ll take ur word for it being normal and just keep plodding along, hopefully it’s a stall that will break soon! If not I will contact my practice

Calories per day - 2 months post op?

(I had surgery the same day as the OP.) I've set my tracker to let me know when I've gone over 750 calories, which I rarely do.

    So fed up

1200 calories is not a lot, but it depends on 1200 calories OF WHAT FOOD. Are you eating protein and veggies, or are you eating cakes, sweets, and chips? You will not feel restriction if you are eating sugary or salty snacks because they dissolve into nothing, but if you eat lean protein, you will likely feel restriction. For example, I went out to sushi last night, but didn't eat the rice, so I essentially just ate raw fish - pure protein. I was stuffed! But then after I got back to my hotel I found a rice krispy treat and was able to eat half of it with no issues... oh well. I also have been hungry since day one! I was put on metformin and topamax (topirimate) by my medical team, and it definitely helps the hunger. So does tea and coffee, and drinking enough in general. Also, two weeks of not losing weight is totally normal. As far as exercise... gentle walking likely won't make you hungry (except if you're "expecting" it to). It is good for your mood and while it is unlikely to help you lose weight (you can't out-exercise a bad diet!), it is excellent for health and it is good for keeping weight off long term. Good luck!

Calories per day - 2 months post op?

I would say around 700-800 calories and about 60+ g of protein.

    So fed up

If I don’t eat atleast over 1000 I’m snappy and hungry, I don’t force more calories in me I eat when hungry and it just happens to end up adding upto 1200 calories sometimes

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

So far so good. 5 months post op and realized that I need to hit a minimum 1200-1400 calories a day to lose. Any less absolutely results in stalled weight. Down 125 lbs so far though!

Calories per day - 2 months post op?

I wasn’t given a calorie amount at that stage either but I wanna say I was at around 6-800 if I recall correctly.
  24. Tony B - NJ

Calories per day - 2 months post op?

At that stage I was between 800 and 900 calories per day. I barely go in my protein and did the best I could to get in veggies.

    So fed up

1200 calories should still be a significant calorie deficit for anyone who would qualify for this surgery. You may not lose as fast as someone eating like 800 but you will still lose. And many practices are encouraging closer to what you are eating because they believe that being at the lower calorie intake for too long damages your metabolism. What does your team say about your loss??
