  1. It just so happens I was doing a bit of light reading this week on the ASMBS.org website. I discovered stats on bariatric surgeries including revisions. Check out this link to the ASMBS site: https://asmbs.org/resources/estimate-of-bariatric-surgery-numbers When you take in the numbers holistically. Revision rates are climbing rapidly.
  2. Best of luck! I'm 4 weeks out from revision. It's very different this time around. My recovery was honestly much better for this procedure, not sure why. I feel so much better having that darn port out of me, too!!

    3 days until revision!

I had revision from band to RNY on January 23, 2015. I stayed 2 days in the hospital. I was off heavy pain medicine the next morning. I walked right way and kept walking. I sipped water every 15 minutes. I know I am very lucky and thank god for a relatively easy recovery. I had very little pain, quick recovery and I'm down 26 lbs. already. I have been following my doctors orders to a "T". I wish I had done the RNY the first time, but I was too scared. This has been one of the best decisions I've made! I wish you the best of luck!
  4. Thank you! The time will go by super fast, before you know it you’ll be at 3 months. I feel like I’m a rather slow loser which is usually the case as a revision vs a first time wls patient. But as long as it’s still coming off it then it’s all good. Good luck to you, I’m sure you’ll hit 180-190 in no time [emoji4]
  5. Im in Utah and looking to have the DS as my revision to my original bypass 16 years ago, who and where did you go if you do not mind me asking
  6. Hi All, Well as a very unhappy bander who had a sleeve surgery date (6/20) Passed nutritionist appt.. pysc evailuation, and was waiting to take the sleeve class tomorrow I received frustrating news today. First, I am self pay, I was self pay in 2008 when I had my band put in. Used the same Dr. here in VA who was to do my sleeve. The call I had today was to tell me that Blis, the co. for self pay catastrophic insurance ( part of my surgery fee now may not approve revision to the sleeve because of all the complications that can occur). My stats are below but I have kept off most all of the 85 lbs. (all but 12-15) in the 3 years I have had my band. Despite all the problems this band has given me. So my BMI is lower than someone who will be a new VSG patient. I have no major health issues, no diabeties, no history of clots, no HBP, I really am healthier than when I had the band surgery. The revisions my DR. has done from band to sleeve have all been paid by health insurance. They have not done a self pay revision. His results are good from what I can tell and he is a Blis participating DR. My question is have any of you had this issue? Scrapping up the $ again was no small feat but now to hear they may not approve it means I might have to sign away permission to pay any and all possible complication costs if he will still do the surgery. Or just have my band out and nothing further done, which scares me of further weight gain. Despite my constant gerd, esophageal spasms. and not being able to eat solid foods well, I need this restriction!
  7. PS Apparently Blis covers first time surgery but not revisions. I could understand if I hadn't been successful with the band but I did well with the weight loss. They site the chances of stricture as high with the sleeve, but that would be for any sleeve right not just revisions from banding? Does anyone have figures on complication rates?
  8. Hello to revision from lapband to sleevers. I’m 22 days out and just wondering how everyone is doing. I’m having a lot of heartburn no matter what I eat. I’m still very fatigued if I do something for more the two hours straight, like housework. I actually feel faintish. Sometimes I’m hungry sometimes not. When I eat I have to be very careful because I don’t feel full until it’s to late then I’m sick, I’m trying to measure out food but I’m so hungry at that moment that I feel that one more tablespoon is not going to make a difference..wrongo! Otherwise I’m feeling great, no pain or soreness anymore I never took pain meds so that wasn’t and issue. Sleeping is getting better can lay on my side now without discomfort!! Just like to know how everyone else is doing and stage they are in?
  9. Hi. I had my gastric band removed after 10 years with revision to sleeve just 3 weeks ago. How can I help?
  10. Thanks so much for sharing your experience!!! It is wonderful to hear that the sleeve is working so well for you!!! One if my fears is developing bad reflux. Due to my weight, I would not be a candidate for revision to RnY so that scares me. I would hate to have to suffer for the rest of my life. My father suffers from Barrett's (sp?) syndrome and I see what he goes through despite treatment, and I don't think I could live like that
  11. Hi everyone! I just got approved to get the band out and the sleeve ASAP. I really haven’t spent a lot of time researching what to expect and it just dawned on me to come here! My band was a disaster and never was viable. The port came out after 2 revisions and I had MRSA. 12 yrs later it’s coming out. So excited for that. Did everyone have the revision to sleeve in multiple surgeries? Reading about the intolerance to artificial sweeteners has been interesting ...I’ve been trained since WW in the mid 80’s to have fake sugar. Any major advice for someone who is about to start this journey again? allison

    Hey Everybody!

I researched here, and all over the internet, reading anything I could. I used Obesity Goodbye and dr. Ponce de leon, and paid $7000 for my surgery. (I called during a limited special offer, and saved $500). I bought 2 round trip tickets from IL to Sandiego, and they cost $555. I also chose the midband because of what I'd read on my own about different percentages of problems, i.e. slippage, port revision, erosion, etc. I didn't want to be persuaded to choose one over the other, I wanted to be educated and make my own choice. I did that, and so far I'm quite happy with my results. I don't know what's going on with the posts regarding a patient getting a different band than they asked for. I have no way of verifying the information posted, one way or the other, but have seen the posts that accuse Dr Ponce de Leon's other group, "Bajanor" of putting the cheapest band in a patient, regardless of what she said she wanted. I'd like to hope it's a mistake or fake, but I can believe that it could happen, so I'm just thankful & hopeful that I got what I asked for. I was treated very well, by the whole obesity goodbye group, and the hospital. I had a good time in Tijuana, and have healed remarkably well. ALL my incisions are healed. I was told to expect some seepage from the port site, that it is usually the last wound to heal, but didn't have any seepage at all. It could be because I applied tea tree oil over my whole abdomen 2-3 times a day for 2 weeks after surgery, and it probably helped keep away any infection, and speed healing. You'd have to read up on it, to see if it's something you'd consider. You have to read about all the doc's, look at all the sites, and decide for yourself what fits you. The only way you'll make the best choice is if you educate yourself about all your choices. Read, Read, Read... then decide. Good Luck to you, the only regret I think you'll have about getting banded, is waiting so long to get to it.

Most sleeve Drs out of country?

As a scientist I have read the published papers of those bariatric surgeons who pioneered VSG. About 5 years ago there were only about 15 surgeons who did VSG. Let me pass on some of the history of this operation. Around 2000, some surgeons who were performing the Duodenal Switch Operation began to do VSG as a first-stage for poor-risk patients. They intended to do the rest of the Duodenal Switch Operation about one year later. The thinking was that a two-stage operation would lower mortality and complication rates for the Duodenal Switch procedure. Of the patients operated on in 2000, when the year was up, many of the patients had lost sufficient weight so that the second state was unnecessary. Thus, the first VSGs were performed in 2000. By 2002, a handful of physicians worldwide began to do VSG as a stand-alone procedure. Between 2002 and 2007 surgeons performing this operation gradually revised the VSG procedure to what it is today, publishing their findings as they learned how to improve the operation. In 2007, The First International Consensus Summit for Sleeve Gastrectomy as held in New York City. The first day consisted of live surgery by experts performing VSG for the 250 attendees wishing to learn the procedure. Afterwards, presentations were given by the experts. The presenters (experts) at this conference were: Gagner of New York, NY Dakin of Cornell, NY Parikh of New York Pomp of New York Jossart of San Francisco Crookes of Los Angeles Elariny of Virginia Schauer of the Cleveland Clinic Florida Rosenthal of the Cleveland Clinic Florida Assalia of Israel Langer of Austria Himpens of Belgium Kotidis of Greece Melissas of Greece Basso of Italy Baltasar of Spain Lacy of Spain Mognol of France Krawczykowski of France Weiner of Germany Won Woo Kim of Korea Boza of Chile De Paula of Brazil So, here is your list of those considered "experts" in this field by their peers as of 2007. So, I think the discussion of who has a lot of experience and who does not has already been established by the medical community itself. The list is above. The procedings of the conference were published in Obesity Surgery 18:487-496 2008. See for yourself. Best wishes,
  14. You're welcome! I hope you are able to revise to a sleeve soon because I really don't think anyone should have to live with a band.
  15. Had you dilated your pouch? Congrats on the revision..
  16. The Lap Band can be installed alone or it can be combined with a procedure called Plication. Plication is where your surgeon "folds" your stomach in on it's self and stitches the folds together to form a much smaller main stomach. There is no cutting of stomach tissue and, if the Plication, for whatever reason doesn't work for you, it is reversible by simply removing the sutures. Think of it as a pseudo Gastric Sleeve-ish kinda thing. If you have the option to add Plication when you get your band, you might want to go for it. A lot of people who have had the duo are really happy with it. Personally, I wish I had read up on it, more before I got my band. Had I known then what I know now, I would have added Plication to the pile when I had my surgery. As it is, I am happy with my band and I figure, should God forbid, I lose my band for any reason, maybe I can revise to Plication.

    Yesh Can Yisraelim?

Hi Bandpal, Thank you for replying so quickly!! WOW :-) I'm glad to hear that you are feeling well and losing weight 4 months into the banding process. I also underwent revision surgery at Assuta Hospital in TA a couple of days ago. Dr. Subhi Abu Abeid banded me and treated my hiatal hernia. Am still a bit sore but am not taking anything because it is bearable. I live in Kiryat Bialik, north of Haifa. I also visited and joined the tapuz forum but find this site more informative and feel more comfy in my mother tongue, English. In any case, do keep in touch. Will be glad to trade recipes, share experiences and to support of course. Best, Nava
  18. I'm 5 days post-op from a band to sleeve revision in Mexico. We flew to San Diego, they picked us up at the airport and went straight to the hospital for blood work and EKG. Then they took us to a really nice hotel and had broth and jello for me. The next morning we went back for surgery. I stayed 2 nights. My husband had to stay at the hotel though. After discharge they took me back to his hotel for 1 night...with broth and jello. The next morning they took us back over the border to the airport and we flew home. We got to San Diego on Wednesday June 7. Surgery on June 8 and we flew home on Sunday June 11. I have no complaints. I was exhausted traveling home but not in pain. I had asked fir wheelchair assistance between gates. The hospital had everything down perfectly and I had no issues at all. No pain, vomiting, nausea, etc. I used Dr Gutierrez with Mexico Bariatric Center. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using BariatricPal mobile app
  19. This is interesting, I had a revision from lap band to RNY on December 6, 2017 and I am waking up the same way. I hadn’t thought nothing about it. [emoji102]
  20. Revision and self pay people that have used Dr. Castro can you tell me about the way he does his band to sleeve revisions? Does he remove the band and do the sleeve at the same time? Is the surgery done lapproscopic? What kind and how long of a preOp diet? I'm self pay...anyone self pay that can tell me how fast the process took since we don't have to just through insurance hoops? Also..which pre testing does he require. I am looking into make an appt. with him but I want to ask before I waste my time and money if some of his qualifying isn't quite what I can afford. Thanks to all and good luck in your journey.
  21. I have just started my research on revision surgery in Mexico! My head is spinning I'm looking to revise a failed RnY of 14years. I think I've decided on RnY to DS now to find a surgeon and start things on it's way! Any info on a good surgeon for revision would be so appreciated!!!
  22. On 2/15/22 I underwent revision from VSG to RNY due to hiatal hernia and reflux issues. My surgery weight was around 230 lbs, actually a few less due to three days of liquid diet. In the 5 months since revision surgery I've lost about 40 lbs, but have been at a steady weight for over five weeks. I'm currently around 15 to 20 lbs away from my final goal. I had a post surgery follow up with the surgeons office and they just suggested I try to stay closer to the dietary guidelines. I probably was a little short on protein but in the couple weeks since have worked diligently to increase protein and reduce carbs. Yet the scale hasn't moved. Looking for experiences from others who had revision without a large amount of weight to lose. How did it go for you? Is this just a stall or my new normal? Should I expect to continue to lose, or am I pretty much at my new set point after five months?
  23. Thanks everyone for the insights. I've been stuck at about 190 lbs for over six weeks now. Was hopeful to get down to 175-180, so it's very frustrating to be within sight of a goal but not able to get there. I am thinking I'll give it another month or so to see if this is truly a stall. If things don't move I may vary the program (i.e. adjust macronutrient and calorie levels) to see if I can break through it. With regard to the comment about food capacity, I am noticing that I can eat more at this stage of recovery than I could when I did the sleeve surgery in 2015. Even though my sleeve has been replaced by a pouch, I'm able many times to eat the same amount of food now that I could before the revision. Not always, and sometimes I'm still full after an ounce or two, but it seems like overall capacity returned faster this time than before. Could be part of the challenge.
  24. I too am scared of losing too much weight with a revision. I had the sleeve done in 2014. I'm 5'4" and my lowest was 102. After 3 years I hit my happy spot of 115. I've stayed there for the last 6 years. I'm intentionally gaining now for fear of going too low. I'm at 125 right now and do not yet have a date. I've already had EGD and upper GI series. I just had my manometry done on the 20th and my pH with Bravo is on the 29th. He will submit to insurance after that. I'm really really scared and wish there was another option besides bypass but the 3 doctors I've seen say bypass is my only option. I'm glad to see you're doing well, and hope that I do too, but I sure am scared.

    Sleeve to RNY

I'm going to be getting my revision sometime in July. My surgeon said that with the revision, expect to lose about 40-45% of the weight you would have lost if it was your original surgery. So he said I could expect to lose about 60-65 pounds in a year for my current weight and BMI. I lost 116 pounds in a year with the sleeve, so if I can lose another 65 pounds in a year with my revision, I'll be ecstatic. I'm really good at watching my diet and working out, so I think my "dream goal" is to lose 75 pounds in a year with the revision, but my "realistic goal" is the 60-65 in a year. We'll see. I would be lower than I am now if I hadn't run into so many complications and health issues. But this revision is going to get me back to living my life so I can refocus on my health and weight loss.
