  1. *trigger warning if you are scared about gastric bypass this is not a good post to read also it is a long * (admin if I shouldn't have posted this please delete) I debated long and hard about whether or not to talk about my dad and how he died. I never want to scare anyone and tbh his death wasn't so much because of the gastric bypass he had but rather the prejudice and malpractice of his primary care Dr and the hospital he went to for emergency care. My dad came into my life when I was 28yrs old. I didn't know I needed a dad honestly. He started dating my mom and considered me part of the package. He protected her, he protected me...no strings attached totally unconditional regardless if I wanted him to or not he was going to be there for me. Turns out even at 28 I needed a dad. He was 6ft 5", almost 500lbs, tattoos, beard, and a biker. Dad never talked a lot, he preferred actions. If he agreed with something he'd say "No doubt". If he didn't well he'd just shake his head and turn away. He had had 4 heart attacks by the time he had his gastric bypass surgery in 2009, He went down to 190ish lbs. Everything was great. He did everything he was supposed to do. Crushed his meds, no alcohol, watched his food ..he followed all the rules. Fast forward to July 2021. Dad and mom had split a few years back but he was still my dad. Around July 30th, he started having abdominal pain and couldn't go to the bathroom. He did something he hated to do.. he went to the Dr. The Dr filling in for his Dr took one look him..biker with tattoos wearing a leather jacket and on Medicare and immediately ignored him. He told dad if it was so bad go to the emergency room. So dad did. Hospital er looked at dad...biker with tattoos, wearing a leather jacket and on Medicare and assumed..drug seeker! Told him there was nothing wrong with him. They did no test and sent him home. About 2am on July 31, Dad was in horrible pain and call EMS, they weren't part of the hospital he had gone to earlier, in the ambulance they did an ultrasound on the way to their hospital. One of the paramedics picked up his cell phone and called the first number on it...my mom. They told her to meet them at the hospital, it was bad real bad. She and his biological daughter got to the hospital about the same time. Dr told them there was 3 options...1 take him into surgery immediately ..he would most likely died on the operating table 2. try to get him strong enough to have surgery he would most likely never wake up or 3 give him morphine and let him die. They chose option 3 and less than 30mins later he was gone. So what did a simple ultrasound find? Dad's large intestine had twisted so badly that while he ate, food couldn't get past the twist. Imagine making a balloon animal and twisting the balloon then keep blowing up one side.. the inevitable happened. The food side popped filling his body cavity with food and stomach acid. He didn't have to die. Had the Dr listened, they could have found it and done surgery to fix it. The hospital and the Dr, naturally, claimed no responsibility it was obviously the 12yr old gastric bypass that killed him. I wish I could say they were sued til they cried but dad's biological daughter refused. Me, I wanted their heads on a silver platter but I don't look good behind iron bars. My mom isn't very happy that I am having bariatric surgery less than a year after my dad died. She is trying to be supportive but she is scared. I often wonder what advise would he have given me. I got my insurance approval letter in the mail today and said to myself "so this is really going to happen". I swear I heard "No doubt" Sorry this was so long.

    May Surgery Buddies

Oh I so understand about the eating coping strategy as that’s my default too! Thank goodness I found that my hunger went down after both surgeries, but I know that I can’t count on that forever. I need to learn a better way at coping. i had the SADI (Single anastomosis duodeno–ileal bypass) surgery. Sorry for the change in font size, but I had to copy and paste it here because I can’t remember the full name. Lol from what I’ve been reading, the surgery is most like the duodenal switch except not as severe with the malabsorption. I’ll see - I just hope it can help me get rid of my excess weight. ☺️
  3. My bypass + hh repair was early in the morning. Pain level after surgery 0 but NOW 8:39pm I have level pain 6. My Liquid diet start in stage 2. Protein shake, broth, sugar free popsicle, apple juice and water. Probably come home tomorrow. No nausea, no vomit at this moment. But you need walk, walk and walk. OFFICIALLY I’M ON THE OTHER SIDE!!! Yessss!!!!
  4. I had my gastric bypass surgery exactly a week ago. I have been doing okay on shakes and sugar-free Jello for the most part. This past week I haven't had any food cravings or experienced hunger until now. Any tips for how to last the next week? I feel like it will be impossible!!!!! All I can think about is eating cream of wheat or mashed potatoes....

    Post op ketamine infusions

Best decision I ever made. I was resistant to most anti depressants and nothing was working so I tried it. My mood is significantly improved. Post bypass I think they just want to be sure the body is healed enough to handle an infusion. The idea of it now makes me somewhat nervous—idk if rerouted guts has any impact on the infusion or not.

    20 years out

I'm not sure if the calcium deficiency was the cause of my kidney troubles or just happened concurrently with them. But both problems are connected to oxalate nephropathy which is rare. When I got the diagnosis, I did research and learned that oxalate nephropathy can be caused by fat malabsorption which is the main feature of the Duodenal Switch gastric bypass I had 20 years ago.

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hello, I am now 8 weeks out from my gastric bypass surgery. I am 53lbs down and am finally getting some energy back. I did have a lot of set backs following my surgery and spent 2 weeks in the hospital most of which was in ICU. I am able to eat regular foods now but still don’t have much of an appetite. I don’t tolerate meats very well and I crave fresh fruits and vegetables which are sometimes hard to tolerate as well. I find I only like ice water and herbal tea. I can no longer drink coffee and I used to drink coffee all day everyday. I no longer crave sweets either. I’m amazed at how much my tastes have changed. Has anyone else experienced changes like these?
  9. It's been a long time now since I had the gastric bypass. I've lost 187 pounds. I lost most of the weight in the first couple of years. I slowly regained some (70 pounds) beginning about 5 years out because I had trouble with my knees and couldn't exercise. I've lost the regained weight in the past couple of years by just gentle walking several times a week. I'm no longer obsessed with eating and just eat for nourishment. I weigh myself about once a month. I stopped going to my support group because of the distance after the first couple of years. I lived about 4 hours away from where I had the surgery done. There was a 2 years wait list to see a surgeon closer to home. One thing I regret about not going to the support group is that I became complacent about keeping up with my mineral supplements. Now my kidneys are damaged and I need a transplant. The transplant surgeon tells me I need a panniculectomy before I get the kidney transplant. I couldn't afford the plastic surgery and didn't want to jump through all the hoops to get it covered. But now, since I've been told there's a medical reason for doing it, I'm starting to look into it.

How much food do you eat after

I am about 7 weeks out from bypass. I eat about 4oz at a time, but it really depends what i am eating. Something things sit heavy and fill me up faster than others. Of those 4-5 oz, 2-2.5 are a protein. I am now off restrictions and can eat whatever my stomach will tolerate. I have tried tons of stuff, no steak and no lettuce yet as they tend to be harder to tolerate. But I have all kinda of other fresh veggies and lettuce is next because I miss salad. haha So far the only thing I had a problem with was a bite of pit beef meat, but that was a few weeks ago and I haven't tried since. I was so miserable and sick, I don't plan on trying again for a while (or ever). haha I am not a big pit beef person anyway so it isn't a big loss for me. Good luck on your journey!

6 weeks post op gastric bypass

let your clinic know. Those symptoms could be indicative of a stricture. (note I said "could be" - not "definitely"). They may want to do an upper endoscopy and check it out. If there's one there, it's an easy fix - they'll fix it while they're in there. I had two of them - at four weeks out and again at eight weeks out. About 5% of bypass patients get them, and they almost always occur 1-3 months after surgery (very rare before or after that time frame) - so you're in the right window for one, if that's what it is.

    Re-sleeve

Hi Nina, Although I'm from a Turkish background, I didn't have the courage to go overseas to get this surgery done bc if any complication arises the doctors here in Australia are hesitant about treating somebody else's mistake. So I just bit the bullet and decided to have it here in Australia, I've heard a lot of success stories from people who have had it in Turkey. It's good to hear yours whent well too! Hope everything works out for you in the long run, 🙏My surgery is tomorrow I have butterflies in my stomach nerves are flying high lol I'm hoping it goes well as I'm having a hiatal hernia repair and a gastric bypass. All the best to everyone🙏🙏

    Gastric Sleeve to Gastric Bypass

Wow. I literally felt n as though I was writing you story for myself. I decide to do the conversion from sleeve to bypass as I can no longer handle the GERD. it scares me because I was choking bad in my sleep with reflux and could not catch my breath, then I started regurgitating my food really bad. I'm scheduled for the 19th. They are going to repair the hernia and do the bypass. GERDS has made daily life to hard and I can't handle it. Sent from my SM-G996U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Gastric Sleeve to Gastric Bypass

I had the sleeve in 2015. I lost about 90 pounds from my highest weight which was still a ways from goal, but over 7 years managed to gain back about 25 pounds. Early this year my hiatal hernia worsened and because of that and GERD my surgeon told me I really needed revision to bypass. My revision surgery was three months ago. I've done well with recovery with no complications. I've lost about 33 pounds since surgery and am about 19 pounds from goal. I will say that weight loss for me has been slower with the revision, possibly because I didn't have as much to lose. The surgery did take care of my hernia and GERD issues. I have not pushed the envelope with high fat or very sweet foods to see if I have any issues with dumping, but I'm told only about 1/3 of bypass patients do. Because of the change in the way your pouch works (less stomach acid and such) I have experienced a couple issues with dry or very tough foods causing what is called frothing or 'foamies'. It's very uncomfortable but passes in an hour or so. All in all I'm glad I had the surgery. I was having significant issues from the hernia and really didn't have a choice, but it's nice to be down in a weight range I never made it to with the sleeve.

    June 2022 surgery buddies

Hi to you and the other June buddies! I will find out my surgery date on Monday when I meet with my surgeon…I’m hoping for a date between June 8 and June 13. My pre-procedure testing was extensive and has been finished for about 3 weeks. Cigna approved me this week. I’m having gastric bypass and hiatal hernia repair. I’m 5’2”, and right now I’m 213lbs. I started the liquid pre-op diet in earnest last Tuesday (the surgery coordinator said that of their patients like to start it early 🤷🏻‍♀️). I’m glad I started early because I have switched it up twice now and it has made it easy. When I meet with the surgeon on Monday, I’ll find out the ‘protocol’ pre-surgery diet, and go from there. Good luck to everyone AND May surgeries, please keep posting! Your stories are wonderfully encouraging and informative.
  25. Hello, I am 6 weeks post op and have no idea what to eat. I was so nauseous for the last 2 1/2 weeks and now I'm starting from scratch. I am scared to eat anything bc I throw up so easily. I am having a very hard time with fluid intake also. Nothing tastes good, even the flavored water I drank with no problems before surgery. Any advice is appreciated!!
