Try different temperatures - sometimes warm was better than cold, sometimes the opposite. Sometimes with flavor (e.g. crystal light), sometimes plain. Sometimes tea, sometimes coffee, sometimes broth. Keep experimenting. If you are clearly not close to your goal for protein and water (I was told to use 60 grams and 64 ounces as my marks, with my shakes counting toward my ounces) call your team. Dehydration can be a big problem. Try some sugar free popsicles, too.

I was told to look for something that was 100% whey protein isolate (because it's better absorbed than whey protein concentrate and other protein forms). Personally, I like the Unjury brands, but you have to buy them online. You can jazz them up by adding things like PB2 (powdered peanut butter), unsweetened cocoa powder, a tablespoon or so of sugar free pudding mix, or sugar free syrups like they use at coffee shops (you'll see a very few flavors, usually Torani brand at grocery stores, places like Cost Plus World Market generally have a bigger selection of the sugar free flavors, or you can go crazy and order online). When I was trying things out, I ordered a bunch of single-serve packets. BJs Bariatrics does single packets of the Nectar brand. Vitalady.com does single-serve of a bunch of different brands.

Special K Protein Drinks ?
DanielHoughton replied to gettinMeBack's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I used them pre-op during my two weeks liquid diet. After surgery (10/1), they were too sweet to tolerate and the protein isn't enough. -

They are ok, but not enough protein to make a difference. In my opinion. -
Special K Protein Drinks ?

I found those and thought I had hit the jackpot. They taste great! I love sweet things and I could down these for Meal Replacement all day. But then I got to my doctor's office and he pointed out that they have 5 grams of Protein and 27 grams of carbs. Which, of course, is why they taste so great. Try something else to get your protein in, you're not going to get it with one of these. -
Do I count my protein shakes and watery soups as part of my daily liquid, I am supposed to have 60/60 but not sure how to count it.

I'm sick of chocolate.

So I am pre-op on a liquid protein diet. Right now I am drinking Bariatric Advantage the chocolate flavor. I like it a lot, it is just the right thickness for me. I make them with water and a couple ice cubes in a shaker cup. I do not like the other Bariatric Advan. flavors at all. I'm sure there is a thread somewhere about all this but I can't find it. I was going to order some Unjury flavors but I don't know how thick they are. Any help is good help. I don't feel like I can be succesful if all I drink is chocolate bariatric advantage. It's getting boring at 4 shakes a day. HELP ME! Thanks!

Watering Down Protein?
notime replied to SkinnyMinnie2Be's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Mixing the Isopure with the water gives you 40 oz of fluids. It gives you only as much protein as the original 20 oz of Isopure does. -
Im 9 days post op, and just started my protein drink yesterday. .and when i drank it i got really really sick...i thought i was going to throw up..and yesterday i made it with milk so i thought maybe it was the milk, but i just made some again today with water....and same thing happened! Just not as bad because i only took 3 sips because i was scared..Is this normal? I was drinking protein drinks before surgery and i was just fine...maybe i just need to try a different kind. Although i hate to spend money on something i wont be able to drink..ugh

That is a rough diet when you are doing it for long.I did the same diet but only for 3 weeks. I found the protein shakes seemed to stay with me better if I made them with lots of ice and sipped them slowly. Can you have salad as well as the veggies or would a salad be your veggies? Good luck.

Hello Kandi here I'm new the VSG board. I had my surgery on November 23 2010 weighing 335 pre op 350. I live in Grand Rapids MI and Dr. Randall Baker of Grand Health partners performed my surgery. I couldn't ask for a better surgeon or better care at spetrum health Blodgett. I am one week post op and I have went through a series of emotions. I was excited to thinking how easy the recovery is and then back to what in the World have i done to by body. I have been on the liquid diet and I am having a hard time getting the protein down but I am working on it. I also have flu like symptoms needless to say that is where the doubt has came from. GHP provides your supplements for the two weeks but I am so tired of after taste. I have never wanted some cream of wheat or eggs SO BAD!!! I guess I need someone to tell me it gets better.

Methods of Self paying
amychar replied to stacey3272's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I spoke with Dr. Q's facilitator yesterday and they no longer offer financing. He said they never offered in-house financing but utilized an outside company. They no longer utilize that option because the customer's account kept getting sold to other companies and their terms of the loan would also change. -
Special K Protein Shakes?
dstollery replied to Sparklette's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have not and still pre op but the reward for the calories doesn't seem that great. My Protein shakes have around 28g protein with only 100 cal and 2 carbs. Might be a good treat though -
I saw these while I was at the store today.has anyone tried them? 10g Protein 150 calories 1g sugar 5g fat

Gained weight at around the holidays.
Kindle replied to Robn's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Same here. I don't weigh everyday, but I do bounce up and down within the same 5 pounds from week to week. As for the holidays, I was a little above my bounce range after a week of mom's good home cooking, deserts, alcohol and sweets galore. As soon as I got home I detoxed all the sugar out of my system and went back to protein/veggie basics. Took about 2-3 weeks to get back to the bottom of my bounce range. But fluctuation is pretty normal for me. Last week I was actually below my normal range and yesterday I was at the top end. Just go back to basics for a bit, throw in a little extra activity, and you'll get back on track. -
Ugh...darn the naysayers!
old lady pilot replied to NicoleSW's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had proximal RNY in March 2004. There were a lot fewer options as to procedures being done. I have the kind of personality that if I can figure a way around something I will. At the time of surgery I was working in an office that had only single ladies room with 3stalls for 50+ women. These 2 considerations shaped my choice of procedure. A RNY is not something you can reverse without going through surgery again. I did not go for a distal or duodenal switch because of sharing a bathroom in very close quarters.I had sweeter vs a bloater eating habit and I had read that too much sweet stuff could cause you dump and that was like a fate worse than death! About 1 month post- op a friend of mine found about a pound of fresh duck fois gras on sale and we couldn't resist hauling out my fois gras cook book. I was still on medical leave so we planned to have it the following night. I spent the day making a roasted garlic puree to go with it. I am the cook so I reverently pan seared our prize.and we sat down to eat. I was sated after about 4 bites. About a h Alf hour later I started to feel awful. I had extremely sharp pains in my stomach. This was closely followed by very, severe stomach and intestinal cramps and diarrhea. I was dumping and hoped I was going to die to stop the pain. I had not realized that excessively fatty food could also cause very big problems!! So I learned that my new stomach had done just what I wanted. I was going to have to stick to the programme or bad things would happen again. I knew that I had picked the right procedure for me. I am now 10 years out and have lost and kept off 150lbs. I considered both the mental and physical consequences of the available surgery back then. I needed to have real consequences if I did not follow the Rules. I am sorry for the long post but as you know you have to choose what is best for your life and psyche. Having the surgery will change your life and probably also save it as it did for me. Cheers, Jane -
Creamy Stage Day 1
mistysj replied to onedaycloser's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Of course you can have ham. Just purée it. Same with chicken. You probably should have blended the eggs too. Eggs are not creamy (I assume you scrambled them). Smooth peanut butter would have been better. I don't have a problem with a but of mashed potato but add some cheese or protein powder. you can have cottage cheese, I bet. And yogurt. -
Find a substitute. Protein shakes, SF pudding, sf hot chocolate all go down real nice. You can gain weight with a band if you are not willing to make life style changes. It sounds harsh I know, but really?? You did not have surgery because you like your current weight/health level. Suck it up! There are a lot of people here who have been successful. A few have not, but most of these are finding away around the band.

Anyone in San Diego, California?
The Candidate replied to NinaB's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My program was called Options and is through Kaiser Permanente. It took nearly a year, including 24 weeks of classes and having to lose 10% of my weight. Having waited so long it's kind of surreal that I'm finally so close to my surgery date! I actually live in North County, but Kaiser, in my particular area, contracts out to Pacific Bariatric in SD and all bariatric surgery is done at Scripps. I am only required to do one day of liquids. I think that might be because of already having lost the 10%. But it does make things easier. I feel exactly like I did when I first made the decision to have surgery, in equal parts elated, nervous, hopeful, eager, and above all else, happy. As I've never had surgery I'm, of course, a bit apprehension about the unknown from time to time. But I am 100% certain that this is the right step for me. And as I've overloaded on research this past year, I honestly feel I couldn't be more ready! How about you? What led you here and how are you feeling? ???? -
DO IT.... DO IT... DO IT... I had my surgery Nov 22nd so that was just almost 2 weeks ago and I feel GREAT. I went back to work this last monday I was a little tired but nothing I havent done before ( gone to work tired). I started out at 210 lbs and now weigh 194. I will say I am ready to eat some food but have to wait until Dec 13 for mushies, I am sure those mashed potatoes will never taste soo good. I had my 14 year old daugter for support but honestly my recovery was very easy , never had nausua , YOu will get through it great just do what they say Drink and walk alot.. dont chicken out you will regret it if you do. Good luck. Stay positive..

Liver Shrinking? Vent...kinda!?
musicalmomma replied to WyominGirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm pretty sure it's a combination...but mostly a deprivation of carbs that shrinks the liver. I mean...if you fasted for two weeks, your liver, among other things, would shrink. It's just that most foods fall into two catagories or a combination of the two...carbs and Protein. I know it stinks...I hated my pre-op diet...but here I am 9 months later and it's all a distant memory. Hang in there...it's worth it -
I sure hope it is normal, because I get hungry about every 2-3 hours. I eat something small, enough to safisty me, but not a meal every 2-3 hours. Yep, I get that rumble (almost a kind of hurt) hunger pang, and when Matilda (the name I have for my new stomach) gets hungry, boy does she let me know!! I have noticed that my hunger pangs are much more pronounced now that my stomach is smaller. The first hunger pang I had after surgery scared me to death---it hurt and I thought something was wrong with me. I eat a tablespoon or so of peanut butter on a saltines, an ounce or 2 of cheese, half a protein bar, etc. whenever I get the hungries every 2-3 hours. I really hope this is normal, because I have been doing this since my surgery. I have found it helps me to snack on small stuff about 5-6 times a day instead of having 3 meals a day.
