  1. First, it takes a hell of a lot of hard work, eating excessive quantities of food over a prolonged period of time to stretch out your tummy again. You certainly won’t stretch it out in 6 weeks. Many surgeons say it’s nigh on impossible to do. So you can breath about that. You’re ok. As to quantity of food, yes your portion sizes are more than I did then & some are more than I do now. (e.g. 3-4oz protein, 1.5 eggs, 1/2 a thin pork sausage). BUT, there are lots of different plans out there with different portion size & calorie goals/ recommendations. And some can eat more. If you are following your plan you are doing fine. AND, you can only eat what you are physically able to eat without causing discomfort. Though it is odd you haven’t felt your restriction yet given you are eating solid foods. I’d check your calories though as 130g of salmon fillet alone is 222, 2 eggs are 156 & 4ozs pork sausages can be 345 calories. Of course it can depend on the size of the eggs, ingredients in the sausages, cut of chicken, etc. Though you can eat more doesn’t mean you should. Have a chat with your dietician about protein goals, portion sizes, caloric goals, etc. For example 4ozs is generally considered the recommended portion of protein an adult should eat at a meal. I wonder if you are exceeding your protein goal as a result?? Having a little more is ok but again check with your dietician. I remember my dietician questioning the size of people’s tummy post surgery. There’s a difference in removing 80% of a tummy that could hold say 3 cups of food versus 80% removed of a tummy that could hold 5 cups. The larger tummy is still going to be able to hold more. Simple maths. Congrats on the weight you have lost so far.
  2. I'm posting this here for traffic in the hope that some of you can advise and/or reassure me. I had my VSG on the 4th April (around 6 weeks ago) I am very worried that I am eating too easily so early out. Especially as I keep reading posts about people who can barely eat a postage-stamp sized piece of ham. An example day this week was: Breakfast - 1 x protein yoghurt pot (100 calories) Snack - 2 hard-boiled eggs (120 calories) Lunch - 100g / 4oz of pork sausages and vegetables (250 calories) Snack - 50g / 1oz of chicken pieces (150 calories) Dinner - 130g / 4.5oz of salmon fillet and creamed spinach (200 calories) TOTAL 820 calories I didn't feel any real restriction; I could easily have carried on, but I made myself stop. I'm pleased with the protein, but is 820 calories too much at this stage? Could I stretch my sleeve with this? Or could my sleeve be too "baggy"? For reference, in just under 6 weeks, I've lost 26lb. I wondered if my height could affect my stomach capacity? I am a 6ft female with an Amazonian frame, so maybe my tummy is bigger or longer than average to begin with? Thank you for any replies!!!
  3. I don’t know who I’m kidding. I put this plate of leftovers together to eat for “lunch” thinking i would put a reasonably sized dent into it cuz I was STARVING. Measured and logged it all onto MFP and for some reason felt like I was looking at Mt. Everest and was all Um, nope…cant do this. And just like that, starvation gone. So its back in the fridge untouched for later. But i took a picture, so here it is anyway. For funsies, am also including what most of it looked like last night when it wasn’t yet leftovers but First-overs. 356 calories for the leftover plate (yep i used an actual dinner plate this time instead of my usual saucer cuz i thought i was that hungry) The leftover plate: Some of its original presentation last night…i didn’t take pics of it all, but the un-shown dishes were equally yummy looking: (those gold skulls are actually bourbon ganache filled chocolates brushed with gold shimmer powder…so cute)

    Gastric Sleeve to Gastric Bypass

Greetings @Im4miracles - Michelle, I got my sleeve surgery in 2016. I lost around 130 lbs During the time from 2020, I had gained some of the weight back. I also had severe GERD (where the GERD was so severe that I was vomiting my food almost everyday). I went back to my Bariatric surgeon in February, 2020 to revise my sleeve surgery to a Gastric Bypass with hernia surgery I have to admit that I had similar concerns about the Gastric Bypass that you do. I was concerned about the dumping syndrome and wondering if I could keep the weight off with revision to the bypass surgery. I got my Gastric Bypass surgery with hernia surgery in March 2020. It was the best decision I ever made for myself because in hindsight I don’t have this severe GERD anymore. Once I was released from the hospital, I didn’t have much pain and didn’t have to take my narcotic pain killer. At my 6 month post op appointment, my bariatric surgeon was extremely pleased with my weight loss progress because I had lost 124% of my original body weight. My current body weight is in the mid 130’s. I was really scared that I would experience dumping syndrome after my bypass surgery - which I did not. In my experience, I haven’t had malabsorption of my daily nutrition in my body. My bariatric vitamins don’t taste horrible (I take my bariatric vitamins daily). Fortunately, my tastebuds haven’t changed because of the bypass surgery. I can eat all foods that I had eaten before I got my bypass surgery. I no longer have to take the Protonix 40 mg because the bypass surgery cured the GERD for me. Lastly, the weight that I had lost from my bypass surgery hasn’t returned because I use my Lose It application (food journal) to budget my calories, I walk everyday for 30 minutes at a minimum, and I use the nutritional plate method (that my medical nutritionist told me about). The plate method is where you divide your plate in to three sections: first section is 50% of the plate is made out of fruits and vegetables (I typically have 25% of fruits and 25% of vegetables in this section), second section is 25% of protein food, and the third section is 25% of carbohydrates foods. Using the nutritional plate method I make sure I’m getting the proper nutrition. Michelle, I hope that what I’ve written has given you food for thought. I have successfully gone from a sleeve surgery to a bypass surgery without any complications and i am extremely happy about my weight loss journey, thus far
  5. I personally buy the premixed ones but many people do also buy the powder. I haven’t heard much about isopure. Walmart has the premiere protein shakes which my team recommended that are pretty good as well as the fairlife ones that I hear a lot of good things about on here. I have tried the chocolate and it was pretty good. My personal favorite is the caffe latte by premiere (it has caffeine though). If you want you could try mixing the powder with milk. It adds a few calories but it also adds protein. If that doesn’t work keep trying. It takes a while for most people but don’t stock up, post op some of our tastes change and taste for sweetness is a common change we have. That’s when I discovered the caffe latte as it is not as sweet as many others that I no longer liked. I am 14 months out and still have one for breakfast everyday even though I don’t have to anymore FWIW.

    bread

Have you seen the Sara Lee delightful bread? It’s 45 calories per slice and it tastes pretty good. 6g net carbs though.

    The perfect size pan

Just tried it making some scrambled eggs, onions, spinach. Its ok. Not as flavorful as olive oil. But 0 calories for the spray vs over 100 in the olive oil.

I just googled and if you want to make it yourself they even have low calorie edibles recipes online.
  9. Im told myself i’d do a 2wk stint of low-carbing starting today to get myself bikini ready for an upcoming vacay at the end of the month. (while i am no longer a card-carrying ultra-low carber these days, i do acknowledge the drastic effect it has on my appearance when i do, which, in my opinion, is for the better as I think my body looks so much less “puffy” when deprived of carbohydrates). Plus I anticipate many an alcoholic drink to be consumed on vacay so it’ll all even out in the end anyway, lol. But I digress. Mr comes home with my absolute favourite brand of Jamaican Beef Patty (perfect amount of spice and sauciness of filling, as well as my preferred pastry makeup: not too, too flaky on the outside and chewy/soft just under the surface…how that for a description!?! Lol) So low-carbing be damned! I split one with Mr. 190 calories for 1/2 the patty. 🤤

Well if you like ranch the Bolthouse farms ranch is made from yogurt so it’s only 45 calories and it’s good.

Yea. I mostly got them because I found a yogurt salad dressing that I like and it’s only 45 calories for 2 TBSP. So I was going to take it with me when I go out to eat. I was just surprised how tiny that cup is. I think I have been having a couple servings. At least it’s just 45 calories though. But now I know why they say not all salads are created equal. I used to use regular ranch and a lot of it. Probably worse than a cheeseburger.

Had anyone found any new tips and tricks to help with WLS journey. I found these little disposable cups on Amazon that are one ounce which is 2 tbsp. The serving side for hummus And most salad dressings. After using it I think I have been underestimating my calories for these things.

Yea, rain rain rain! Interesting about the difference in calories. Maybe because it is not perfectly smooth terrain? Even though it may be minimal, your feet and body are still making constant tiny adjustments that you may not even notice.

yucky day here...I'm in Southern Maryland just below Annapolis so you have yucky weather as well. I will have to time my walk today between rain showers or go to the gym but I find I burn more calories when walking outside instead of on a treadmill.

That's awesome!! Great job! I did the same thing, at my very first nutritionist apt (which was in the very beginning of my process, 5 months before surgery) I was given an allowed calorie range to try to stick too. Nothing drastic. Mine was 2000-2200 a day (6ft tall) so I started that day tracking all my foods and just making slightly better decisions. I lost 24 lbs pre-op! I was pumped. Then lost another 12 lbs on my pre-op diet! Been raining a lot here so haven't been able to ride my bike. I haven't really started "working out" yet. It is boring. I want to start boxersize again. It is fun and gives you a hella workout. I just need to DO IT!
  16. I’m almost 2 years post op and I still kind of feel like my life revolves around my surgery. Not my surgery per se, but everything related to maintaining my weight loss. I spend so much time and energy preparing and eating food. I think so much about what I should eat and constantly have to decide how to “spend” my calories. I constantly analyze whether I’m hungry or full or head hungry. I spend so much time working out. I have to remember to take all my supplements at the right times (since some of them interfere with each other and/or my thyroid medication). It is exhausting! And I often wonder how sustainable this is. On the upside, though, I try to remember that being morbidity obese was also exhausting! I was constantly worrying about people judging my weight, whether I could fit into chairs or spaces, arriving everywhere early to make sure I wouldn’t have to squeeze between people, hiding what and how much I ate because people were judging (actually, I still hate being watched while I eat, still feel judged, even though I’m eating quite healthy), sweating all the time, etc. So either way, my life revolved around my weight, and on the balance, this side of it is better. But yeah, for me, every day still feels like a struggle.

    Sometimes the truth hurts

As I said on the original thread, you were right, and I apologize. I just err on the side of taking people at their word. She said she was eating 1200 calories, and I know there are people who don't lose weight well after surgery - but I didn't realize that the weight loss with ESG is really kinda low anyway. So, she just chose the wrong surgery and her head wasn't in the right place, as she made clear in her later responses. I still don't think tough love is the best strategy for most people, but it sounds like she really needed further work on herself before she went through with ANY surgery. Again, my apologies for attacking you yesterday.
  18. I don't know how to quote or tag your names so this was all I could figure out. I want to thank you all! Everyone gave different and yet similar advice. And I now finally truly feel so much calmer. Yesterday I started tracking my food and my workouts (again) and I saw how the workout basically burned my few calories and put me in the negative. And, without a medical degree, I know that is not good. It just makes no sense. I'm assuming what I should be doing are - calmer workouts that don't burn so much but keep me healthy and moving while I'm on such a low diet. Maybe when I'm months into this journey, I'll be encouraged to go beast mode like I did yesterday but it'll make more sense then since I'll be able to eat more. I've called my surgeon's nutritionist and shared my concerns with her. I have a meeting with her tomorrow to figure out exactly WHAT I should be doing at this point. I definitely need more instruction in terms of which direction to head in and quite frankly you guys are right -- I can raise my concerns but I need to follow their guidance as they're the ones working with me throughout this entire journey. I LOVE that whenever I freak out, this online community ALWAYS helps me out so much and calms me down. I cannot thank everyone enough for taking the time to respond and share their thoughts.
  19. Oh..and dinner just now: 1/4 of a cheese quesadilla and some oven roasted potatoes. 316 calories, ate it all.
  20. “Poolside” pork dumplings. Someone posted “poolside nachos” a while back and i’ve been waiting for weeks to follow suit! (The weather has finally co-operated!) I started off with 2, but ended up eating 4 (plus 2 espresso martinis) by the end of the afternoon. 364 calories.

    So I learned something today

Right after surgery I had a hard time drinking water and even 8 months out I still don't like it as much as I did before surgery, maybe because I can't guzzle it. Here are some things I drink instead: Hot Tea Iced Coffee 5 calorie juice diet soda (my surgery center says it's fine after 4 weeks post surgery) diet sweet tea Starburst brand drink packets (five calories, found at Walmart and Walgreens) Great Value brand drink packets (Walmart)

Please tell me I haven't failed.

You say you don’t weigh your food, perhaps the calories you are logging are not quite accurate. Can you commit to doing it for just a couple of weeks? Maybe you are underestimating your portions and eating more calories than you think. You won’t have to weigh and measure forever. Once you have done it a few times with a meal you should be able to pretty much eyeball it but I know I was surprised when I measured and weighed things for the first time.

Please tell me I haven't failed.

This is going to be long so bear with me. First, let’s do the numbers. Your starting weight post clean out was 251. Your weight now on that same-ish scale is 215, that’s a 36lb loss. With ESG the average weight loss is about 10-20% of total body weight at a year meaning at 251lbs your average for 10-20% would be 25.1-50.2. Your actual weight loss is 36 for 14.34%. With ESG the total percentage of total body weight loss at 5 years from one study of 203 patients is only about 14.5% if follow up with providers is recurring most saw their biggest amount lost at 2 years post ESG. It seems that you’re on track for what that study suggests. I wouldn’t sweat it too much. Secondly, however I do want to offer some suggestions for food. Focusing on high volume, low calorie foods can offer bulk because you’ll have more to chew. For example- A 100g of cucumber is only 15 calories while 100g of cooked pasta is 160. If you miss pasta try tofu shirataki noodles- an entire 8oz package is about 20 calories depending on brand. These can sit a bit heavy though depending on the person. Salads full of leafy greens, fruits and vegetables with minimal dressing can help you feel full. They also provide crunch which I myself enjoy. Season your food!- bland food can be boring and unfulfilling and loads of “diet” food recipes lack flavor. Adding spices can help make things you’re eating more enjoyable and trick your brain into being satisfied quicker. Try roasted chickpeas- 1 can chickpeas drained and rinsed then tossed with garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, and chili powder (if you tolerate spicy) with a tsp of olive oil then baked at 350°F for about 25 minutes makes a great topping for salads while providing protein and fiber, both of which help keep you full. Lastly, make sure you’re following your clinic’s guidelines for liquids before and after meals. Drinking too soon after eating can make you feel hungry sooner and sabotage your hard work. If you can’t bear the thought of giving up liquids with all your meals try soup! Broth based soups are a great way to get in fluids, vegetables, protein, and flavor.

Before despairing (or cutting down to 1000 calories or buying who knows what online), take a deep breath and wait until you meet with your surgery center. Hopefully they will be helpful!

No need to weigh it. Just be mindful of the calories listed and the serving size. If you keep track of that, and you record everything in an app, it will help you be more accountable to yourself.
